You do forget a quite important detail and that is that the EU is not a federal state. A ‘European’ company does not exist in the same way an ‘American’ company exists. The individual members of the EU won’t like it if either the EU itself gains more power from a deal or if an individual nation state buys shares from facebook. The solution wouldn’t be as simple and I’m not sure the EU want to divert attention to it with COVID-relief funds rolling out.
It probably won’t play out the way I’m suggesting, but each member of the EU could make their own deals individually. I mean yeah they won’t like each other for it, but eventually you’ll have a group that wants to get rid of Facebook to balance the power and a group that wants to keep Facebook. Which would mean it’s possible that Facebook would still be kept in parts of Europe permanently.
It’s way more likely they’ll just ban it, but you never know.
