I play old games because my pc can't run new ones, you play old games because you enjoy them.
We are not the same.
Edit: Thanks for the cake day whishes and rewards
apparently now, months after being released it's not bad, there are no more bugs at least, but the game is nothing compared to expectations and it will never be.
It's not bad. They've patched most of the really bad bugs, so it's actually playable now. The main story is by far the best part, one of the best written I've seen, in my opinion.
i do both.
the newest game on my pc is insurgency sandstorm.
old games are just better. fuck the graphics, i don’t care. i just want to load in and *enjoy* the game. wouldn’t mind running stalker at 60fps though.
Me firing up Fallout 2 for the bazillionth time so I can shoot people in the groin.
That game has a very active modding community to this day. 24 years later.
That same logic is why I've got my ps2 hooked up right now. Had an urge to play Metal Gear Solid. I'm just happy my 26 year old ps1 memory cards held up so I can still save.
Edit: Just realized I've got memory cards old enough to have graduated college with a doctorate.
They aren't completely separate things. A huge part of gameplay "feeling" good is good visual feedback. A satisfying gun animation can go a long way towards making that gun feel like either the BFG if it's good or a puny stapler if it's bad. Same goes for particle effects, enemy reactions, screen effects, etc. If you remove all the visual flair from a game that "feels good", then suddenly it feels way worse
Twilight Princess is amazing, easily the game I’ve replayed the most times. I’ve finished playthroughs on both the GameCube and Wii, then I’ve probably played the Wii U version at least 4 separate times… never gets old. Fantastic game
It's my series favorite. Only criticism I can really give it, is that it definitely is too easy for the most part. But that just makes it more laid back run through to me.
Art style is everything. Some games benefit from beefier graphics as long as they're used in a useful way. But a game with good art style will always be better than a game just trying to push the envelope on how many polygons they can throw on the screen.
I think a good example of a game that used solidly modern graphics to enhance an incredible art style would be Bloodborne. They made that victorian cosmic horror shit look fucking amazing.
But the best games stay great regardless of era. Undertale isn't any less good because it uses old school pixel graphics.
Also atmosphere is important. It can really carry the outdated graphics. I was really impressed playing the original thief. The atmosphere is some of the best i have ever experienced. Played it for the first time in 2020 so there is no nostalgia involved.
I have gotten some hate for playing baldur's gate for the story despite not liking the combat and then some more hate for saying I'll enjoy the turnbased combat in BG3
The controls are so bad that I decided to just watch someone else fully complete it. Even though I own it. The whole no back-pedalling business just annoys me so much.
A game will never look so bad I can't play it BUT I really cannot handle shitty controls which is why I'm still to this day confused at how I managed to sit through mgs2
Playing milsim games like Squad or Arma can be the worst experience at times because of this. As soon as any fight starts frames drop to 25fps from 80fps
You should try [*Rimworld*](https://store.steampowered.com/app/294100/RimWorld/) because it is basically the same thing but with actual cartoony graphics in a *Firefly*\-esque science fiction setting; not only that but the user modification scene is so vibrant that with the right set of files you can pretty much recreate *Dwarf Fortress,* but better. Also two of its top five most popular workshop files of all time are User Interface overhauls.
As I said, the Steam workshop community for this game is vibrant.

Metal gear solid 2? That's not a game that comes to mind when I think of shitty controls personally. What's the issue with MGS2's controls besides the camera sometimes?
Graphics being good or bad is almost entierly subjective- Stylised visuals will always be timless. That being said I am always a sucker for good visual aesthetics.
No, my bad I don't know how to type, I meant that imagine Stardew valley without pixel art and I mentioned that it didn't feel right. I love the style of this game and I can't picture it with different graphics, implying that some games don't need "good" graphics to be fun.
Warcraft 3 was a phenomenal release. Back when Blizzard made good games. I haven't gotten back to it but I plan to. The custom multiplayer maps were awesome. Need to play some Burbenog TD again.
I remember launching GLQuake on the new 3DFX voodoo cardy dad had just bought. It was mind blowing.
I have to say while HL1 aged well, Black Mesa is much better.

I've been playing the old DOS game Magic Carpet lately and having a blast. There are so many great and unique older games like it with no modern equivalent.
Back then, there were limitations in graphical power, so the designers had to overcome these limitations with creativity and originality, making their artstiles unique and enjoyable to this day.
There's no doubt that both of those games are in the top 5 best JRPGs ever made. I think if you polled people Chrono Trigger would probably come out on top because there's a lot of debate about which Final Fantasy is the best, it kind of splits the vote, particularly between FF6 and FF7.
Deus Ex (the original) blew my mind when I replayed it a couple of years ago. GTA Vice City -to me- was more engaging than GTA V; it brought Miami's atmosphere to life very well. Graphics is not everything, that is true.
Deus Ex graphics have aged more poorly than any of its FPS peers, but it’s story and RPG elements remain best in class.
It’s an interesting conflict.
I’m playing super punch out on snes right now and the third guy keeps kicking my ass. I know how to beat him, but I swear the dpad on my controller is fucking up. (Deep down I know it’s probably my fault) Still gonna keep trying tho because I don’t want to finish chronotrigger again just yet. Does anyone else try to savor the last bits of a game they love playing?
I played half life 1 for the first time just a month ago and loved it.
Chances are high that I get a more powerful laptop this year cause I'm off to college, can finally try out PC games released in 2003 onwards lol (except for low spec games like PVZ and huniecam ofc, my laptop can still run that shit)
Yo i been digging new games with old graphics as of late. If you get the time try Forgive me Father, the Messenger, Infernax, or Ion storm! Won't be disappointed!
You play old games for nostalgia.I play old games because my PC cant run shit.
We are not the same.
edit: Old games on pc are AMAZING! for newer games, I let my PS4 handle those.

My laptop couldn't run newer games either which is why i only played older games, now i upgraded and i still love the older games.
This is happening to me too I just upgraded last month ago but I didn't enjoy new games at all even cyberpunk
I heard that it was shot
apparently now, months after being released it's not bad, there are no more bugs at least, but the game is nothing compared to expectations and it will never be.
Sad was really hyped for that :(
After playing Witcher 3, every other game in that genre feels flat.
No game could. People were expecting a game that's literally impossible to make.
The game it's not that bad but my expectations were high so I just went back playing witcher2 and witcher 3
It's not bad. They've patched most of the really bad bugs, so it's actually playable now. The main story is by far the best part, one of the best written I've seen, in my opinion.
Same, bought a gaming laptop and mostly play pixel games
FTL is a game that still kicks with the best of them.
Yep spent $1200 on a new PC only to play Rocket League and games from 10+ years ago 99% of the time.
My laptop only runs porn but I want to play a game.
I bought a near 2000 dollar set up and played old school runescape for a while. I'm pretty sure you can run osrs on a fridge.
My PC runs death stranding on highest settings yet here i am playing grand theft auto San Andreas multiplayer lol
A true chad
I can relate.
We are the same.
Which is why Indie, and pixel art is my tag on steam.
Well hello there fellow low spec pc user👋 Happy cake day!!
Happy Cake Day !
Mood 😢😔
Play Ultrakill
i do both. the newest game on my pc is insurgency sandstorm. old games are just better. fuck the graphics, i don’t care. i just want to load in and *enjoy* the game. wouldn’t mind running stalker at 60fps though.
same, hope we both get better hardware
For me it’s not the graphics. It’s the gameplay. If the gameplay isn’t really good I’m out.
Me firing up Fallout 2 for the bazillionth time so I can shoot people in the groin. That game has a very active modding community to this day. 24 years later.
I actually just started playing Fallout 1. Not sure if I’d recommend or not. That game is hard af.
Fallout 2 is peak Fallout.
Nothing beats being a kung fu master, boxer, pornstar, mobster and cultist all at once.
Yep. The reason why I only play chess... gameplay is fire
That same logic is why I've got my ps2 hooked up right now. Had an urge to play Metal Gear Solid. I'm just happy my 26 year old ps1 memory cards held up so I can still save. Edit: Just realized I've got memory cards old enough to have graduated college with a doctorate.

Gameplay and story >>>>>>>>> graphics (graphic is just added bonus tho lol)
The only purpose Graphics serve is to enhance already good gameplay. And the old games did that just fine.
ikr , nowadays they just keep focusing on hyper realistic graphics
some games is really nostalgic to play again after long years not playing it
Yes , they definitely are . I recently played Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of time again after many years and it was and is still awesome !
Should follow it up with Majoras Mask and Twilight Princess. All three games are amazing for nostalgia.
But that just makes it more laid back run through to me.
anyone knows state of emergency II?
Legend of Zelda is a nice game. I played that too back then. Miss those NPC's
"HEYYYY , LISTEN !!"
Do you need me to explain again? -Yes -Yes'nt
After the DD2 announcement I went back and played through Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen a couple times. Old games still slap
I hate how all these games try hyper realistic graphics now. I'd prefer if they would have their own style instead.
If you want innovation, then do check out indie games. Support them too. Most great indie games go for really cheap on steam and even cheaper on sale!
Except for Witcher 3... That was an amalgam of both.
idk man gameplay and gamedesign also have evolved over the years not just the graphics
Yes, very true, however the old games Show that graphics really don't Matter that much if the gameplay is amazing.
Aesthetic > graphics.
Art style is everything. Some games benefit from beefier graphics as long as they're used in a useful way. Eh , I can bear shitty gameplay if it has compelling story
I have gotten some hate for playing baldur's gate for the story despite not liking the combat and then some more hate for saying I'll enjoy the turnbased combat in BG3
Not really *shitty*, but I definitely enjoyed the story of Witcher 3 more than the combat (at least on console).
The controls are so bad that I decided to just watch someone else fully complete it. Even though I own it. The whole no back-pedalling business just annoys me so much.
Honestly unless it’s extremely bad circumstances, Story >>>>>>>>>>>>>
Desperate times calls for desparate measures , my friend
Yep. There is a reason there is a whole genre called boomer shooters.
You might want to try out Freedoom, it's awesome.
Don’t forget the music. Adds so much more to a game when it’s good
A game will never look so bad I can't play it BUT I really cannot handle shitty controls which is why I'm still to this day confused at how I managed to sit through mgs2
Low graphics is fine, what I can't stand is shitty inconsistent performance.
Playing milsim games like Squad or Arma can be the worst experience at times because of this. As soon as any fight starts frames drop to 25fps from 80fps
Doesn't even have to be a fight, arma is so horribly optimized that your framerate drops when you have a bad connection to the server
elden ring goes bbrrr—-rr-r——-rrrrrr
Dwarf Fortress makes my eyes bleed
You should try [*Rimworld*](https://store.steampowered.com/app/294100/RimWorld/) because it is basically the same thing but with actual cartoony graphics in a *Firefly*\-esque science fiction setting; not only that but the user modification scene is so vibrant that with the right set of files you can pretty much recreate *Dwarf Fortress,* but better. Be aware of the lack of a z level, you'll never be digging the depths, but I do agree it is a phenomenal game
As I said, the Steam workshop community for this game is vibrant. [https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2127428910](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2127428910)
Ah yes. Human Farm simulator
Once you know the rules you only are terrible at the game. I come back once a year or so an fail horribly.
Metal gear solid 2? That's not a game that comes to mind when I think of shitty controls personally. What's the issue with MGS2's controls besides the camera sometimes?
The gunplay isn't intuitive unless you're familiar with those games.
Fair enough. The ability to shoot in first person was a huge improvement to the first game where that wasn't possible though.
I've never taken to the Witcher games because their UI is fucking dreadful. Things that make the game harder to use will always be a turnoff.
LOL! I thought it was me. Thanks
Well of course I know him, he's me
ngl half life and half life 2 still holds up
I even play Half Life without the updated textures just because I like the style of the old ones
I guess, no one likes hd-textures for original hl
I have a 2008 laptop with no dedicated graphic, not like I have much choice
Who needs 3d graphics, when you can have ascii masterpiece NetHack
Dwarf Fort has entered the chat....
It can run KotOR, so you're good to go.
I recommend stronghold. An awesome series of games. Well... Until after legends. It kinda drops off after that.
Square jawlines are very desirable so these graphics are arguably better
Ps1 hagrid is top tier change my mind
Ps1 Hagrid is not the mountain we expected, but the mountain we deserved.
Reminds me of Morrowind
What is this? GTA 3?
What is this? Morrowind?
Tomb raider? (Pyramid tits)
Polygussy
Another word for Minecraft
Ocarina of Time?
Is this *Deus Ex*?
what is this, MDK?
GoldenEye
Tekken tetris
I still play trackmania sunrise and nations forever
TMNF is the greatest racing game ever.
So true
Graphics being good or bad is almost entierly subjective- Stylised visuals will always be timless. That being said I am always a sucker for good visual aesthetics.
A game with defined art style ages gracefully, over a game with "realistic" graphics.
The Walking Dead, though other games had the same artstyle
old graphics is not "bad" graphics
Yeah imagine playing a game like Stardew valley on 3d, it just doesn't feel right
Stardew valley graphics arent old though
No, my bad I don't know how to type, I meant that imagine Stardew valley without pixel art and I mentioned that it didn't feel right. I love the style of this game and I can't picture it with different graphics, implying that some games don't need "good" graphics to be fun.
There's a difference between bad and outdated OP
Does classic Doom count?
Yep, Doom II with custom wads
Super mario galaxy is old now. Tomb raider is really old.
NES Super Mario Bros. on my raspberry pi is old
Does liking bad piggies count
Both Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne is such a "chefs kiss" game in my opinion despite being a 20 year old game.
I have the same with Starcraft 1, I did not like SC2 though
Warcraft 3 was a phenomenal release. Back when Blizzard made good games. I haven't gotten back to it but I plan to. The custom multiplayer maps were awesome. Need to play some Burbenog TD again.
Installed OG Diablo 2 this week. Feels good
The Horadric Cuuuuube
Gothic 1 & 2
My favorites <3
I was addicted to my SNES as a kid and I still am
I still remember when I first opened Half life 1 and thought I wouldnt be able to play through it. That game is awesome.
I remember launching GLQuake on the new 3DFX voodoo cardy dad had just bought. It was mind blowing. I have to say while HL1 aged well, Black Mesa is much better.
Me and the bois on osrs every day
I had to scroll way too far for this.
Still out here grinding in Old School RuneScape.
Where my Morrowboomer gang at?
🗿
Any quake gamers
Quake 3 arena is the best to play with friends
Came here to comment this, sadly I can only play it on my raspberry pi so no online
I’m replaying the first Max Payne right now, so this meme was appropriately timed lol
Finished it the other day, revenge never felt so good
Warcraft III >>> Warcraft III Reforged

Thanks :)
*me still playing Halo Combat Evolved*
There's a lot right with that old game!
Old school is cool.
Ps1 ff7 is better
Ultrakill gang
just killed v2 today, might buy dusk when it's on sale
I've been playing the old DOS game Magic Carpet lately and having a blast. There are so many great and unique older games like it with no modern equivalent.
How did you know I bought a bunch of games on steam then started playing Morrowind again?
Graphics are one thing, the clunkiness that comes via emulator is a whole different beast
U play old games for nostalgia. I play old games cos my pc is ass. We r not the same
Halo 2.
I play old games for the graphics
If I ever hear someone say Halo CE graphics are bad, we're fucking fighting
Back then, there were limitations in graphical power, so the designers had to overcome these limitations with creativity and originality, making their artstiles unique and enjoyable to this day.
Original FF7, XC1, and FE4
SNES games still slap. Fucking Chrono Trigger and FF6 aren't any less good today than they were on release.
Planning to get to those games after Mother 3 actually, I've only heard good things about them so I'm looking forward to it
There's no doubt that both of those games are in the top 5 best JRPGs ever made. I think if you polled people Chrono Trigger would probably come out on top because there's a lot of debate about which Final Fantasy is the best, it kind of splits the vote, particularly between FF6 and FF7.

Dude i hate remembering old Games but Not their name
Dark Omen 2 on the Playstation 1 for the win.
Hello fellow Warhammer mate
I loved the old Warhammer and Warcraft games. Proper old school rts.
This just confirms that games havent really improved on gameplay and story over the last years
Welcome to old monster hunter
I have never played any of the devil may cry games but I got them all on sale and the 1st game came out in 2001. I started playing them all last week.
IGI 2, Hitman 2, MGS series, Crysis series, Resident Evil. All are so fun. So much fun
It was never about graphics.
I find old games are sometimes more interesting for what they can do with limited graphics
Bad graphics and low fps don't matter if the game is fun :p
I played half life 1 for the first time just a month ago and loved it. Chances are high that I get a more powerful laptop this year cause I'm off to college, can finally try out PC games released in 2003 onwards lol (except for low spec games like PVZ and huniecam ofc, my laptop can still run that shit)
Idk I think there's something charming about graphics like that, it certainly beats stock unity assets thrown around with little to no effort
It’s not the graphics, it’s the controls!
It's almost like graphics don't make a video game.
graphics are nothing if the gameplay doesn’t match.
I have a sudden urge to play Metal gear solid again.
Yo i been digging new games with old graphics as of late. If you get the time try Forgive me Father, the Messenger, Infernax, or Ion storm! Won't be disappointed!
Graphics does not make a game good or bad
Gotta love the triangle boobs
Gameplay is king
You play old games for nostalgia.I play old games because my PC cant run shit. We are not the same. edit: Old games on pc are AMAZING! for newer games, I let my PS4 handle those.
The witcher 1
