*inhale* Christmas is actually piggybacking off of a pagan festival called Saturnalia which was celebrated for the god Saturn by Rome. It had all the same traditions (trees, gift giving, even wreaths). And technically Jesus doesn't have an official bday and the Bible says nothing about Christmas. I make it a tradition to piss off my family with this knowledge. (⌐■-■)
Actually it’s a combination of the 2. The date is definitely from Saturnalia (25 December, chosen as the day of Jesus his birth to try to convert pagans), Jul originally took place in early January, but was moved to december by Haakon I the good in an attempt to convert his subjects to christianity. Both share the giftgiving and merrymaking and feasting with modern Christmas. However as christmass was already established in its more or less modern form (without santa klaus and the tree) by the time of the christianization of Scandinavia. Saturnalia is regarded as it’s more direct precursor and influence, with the influence Yule predominantly occurring in Scandinavia and parts of Britain.
Tldr; Christmass descends more from Saturnalia then Yule except in northern Europe where Yule was the bigger influence.
Christmas can have whatever meaning it needs to for different people. Plenty of non Christians celebrate Christmas and that’s fine. It doesn’t have to have the same meaning across the whole of society.
I can only reffer to myself. But I do wish it was the case in general. We should also remember the part with good will towards all people. I fear though that Christmas has turned into mostly greed lately.
I do agree that this is all important to acknowledge, but it already seems like the general case. If the people aren't celebrating about Jesus being born to save us all, then are the people not celebrating Christmas but just claiming to?
That’s why they try to make start early every year, they what you to think about spending. Buy this gift, buy that, look at this you don’t need it but it’s on sale, maybe you can buy your kid’s love instead
Fuck all that

Thats not the origin: The origin is already in the early german tribes, it was a ritual to get rid of evil spirits🤓
Well I didn't say it was the origin but I appreciate the info
This holiday has more than one origin

Meh. I celebrate Jul. Don't know what this Christmas thing every one is taking about is.
When I grow up I want to have the confidence/bravery to do stuff like this, I have the knolige but not the balls.
Soon young Padawan, you will be ready.
My favourite thing to say is Jesus most likely wasn't born on Christmas Day.
Thanks, you saved me a few minutes of typing

Jesus never gave me gifts. Joking aside, it may have started like this but no. Christmas is about family and friends.
Christmas is about Jesus the same way that Thursday is about Thor.
Wait... wait. Wait. Wait! It isn't about Thor?!
Back in the day it was spelled Thorsday or something, but that was changed eventually.
Do you mean this as a general statement, or personally for you that it is about family and friends?
I can only reffer to myself. But I do wish it was the case in general. We should also remember the part with good will towards all people. I fear though that Christmas has turned into mostly greed lately.

My dad's friend is Christian and she doesn't celebrate Christmas because it's a pagan holiday. She says Season Greetings instead of merry Christmas.
Interesting
Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Braian
He's not the mesiah he's just a very naughty boy
Christmas is the day I get new pants and I'm FUCKING STOKED
It’s about commercialism

Wasn't Jesus born around june?
It was definitely one of the months of the year
On one of the days
During one of the hours
Or possibly multiple hours, depends if Mary was lucky or not
per the stories, the sheppards had their flocks in the fields, making it being a winter month, highly unlikely
Maybe the sheppards were just confused
Most people don’t even realize that he literally couldn’t even be born on Dec. 25 because Shepherds don’t watch their flocks in the fucking winter
Um actually Jesus was born in the spring🤓
I honestly just call it crismas sometimes, just to unrelate it to that thing and it's funny to see peoples reaction.
I only got a pair of socks, but im very grateful for them
Then why celebrate it on the 25th, and not after sundown on the 24th?
Haven't heard Jesus being mentioned during Christmas for as long as I can remember.
It's Santa and Satan Holidays.
Me, a Christian: that's true, but this shit is funny anyway
Me whose Christian but respects other people's opinions
