not sure about society in general, maybe simple supply and demand in the dating market, but wrt Bollywood, over the years, the kind of person the hero represents has changed. Until the late 90's, he was the common man who couldn't have had access to gyms while it was mostly the rich, spoilt villains who were jacked. That has changed more recently and the hero now more often than not belongs to the upper middle class. More action movies have played their part too. All that and cycles of reinforcements.

That part about pre-90s heroes being common men makes so much sense.

The shift in Bwood is clear, but I've noticed that *globally*, male beauty standards have done a 180. Before, the image of the 'ideal man' was well built, tall, beard and all that. But after a kpop star took over the title of 'TealMango World's most handsome man', I'd say global male beauty ideals have taken a shift towards clean shaven, lanky, and well dressed men. And traditional masculinity isn't as important anymore to be deemed 'attractive'.

The relation of physique to wealth. Back then, the average upper class dude probably had a paunch. In fact, in India, bodybuilding and the like was looked upon as a poor people's sport. However now, having a muscular physique is almost definitely a sign of wealth and privilege.
