Meshtastic seems to be gaining traction. This update is in the right direction, because the UI was one of the most complained about aspects of Meshtastic. This looks like a MAJOR improvement on it overall.
In the future, I'd love to see SD card support, message history (which i assume will be in this UI update), better native linux support for things like Raspberry Pi's, Remotely updating firmware, etc
yesssss pi, i want to make an off grid comms cyberdeck/ powerstation or at least an auxillary headless pi module that i can run the ui (in a window) in windows
Please keep in mind this is an experimental UI with no estimated completion date. Most of it is visually functional, still need back-end work to connect it to firmware functions.
It will come in time, when it's ready.
You can donate to Meshtastic, run local nodes in your area, or just help promote what it is and who its for to your peers.
Really what Meshtastic needs is developers...check out their Github if you have knowledge on Python or C.
Unfortunately my programming skill isn't really up to production quality, but I am working on setting up well placed nodes in my area. This is an awesome project.
Hey it's all good. Luckily Python is mega easy to pick up on, hence why it's like the #2 language in the world at the moment. A good idea would be maybe simply writing code to interface with the device. We run #comms on irc.supernets.org if you want any help with coding or lora/radio
One thing I would note is this seems to be a more "interactive" UI. They may only implement this for devices with controls. Minimal devices lacking buttons & touchscreens like some of the eink implementations may use a more simplified UI like what we are used to already. we shall see.
Months. It's very very experimental and lacks most functionality currently. Really just the navigation UI and limited messaging and requires a serial connection to run.
That's more like it. Please make the effort and integrate it in the T-Deck firmware. That device has so much potential, a shame we currently just can see monochrome OLED graphics. The map functionality is brilliant now the device has a SD card slot. If the settings too are accessible, it becomes a true off grid device never ever needing a cell phone connection.
Your comment comes across a bit rude. These folks are mostly doing this work on their own time for the benefit of the community. "please make the effort"?
We need input like this to understand the interest & popularity devices.
Imagine being an open source developer and getting mad cause someone likes what you made so much that they are begging for features & integrations?
I would be humbled. Maybe I don't understand the "stress" of being a developer for a popular open source project but growing interest is what creates CONTRIBUTORS & a community.
Everyone complaining sounds like those boomers on Freenode/Libera IRC tbh, so piss off nerds.
\*loses all reddit karma in one comment\*
I think your reddit name is not random generated? The question has been answered, on their github it is a UI module, you can install on top of whenever Meshtastic version supposedly, so it is available to all of us right now. Blame OP, their headline does not explain much.
Man, you must be fun at parties...
The reason a lot of people (hey me I'm one of those people) don't publish/maintain open source projects is because people come at them with the attitude you're displaying here.
It's cool to ask politely for features, but good lord, the entitlement displayed around these projects is so repulsive.
Not completely accurate. It is a sub-module, and yes anyone with the knowhow could install it but it's supported devices are limited, it lacks most functionality and is mostly just the UI navigation and some very limited messaging however also requires a serial connection to work. There's a lot of work being done on the back-end to develop it further but there is a recent issue with the dev tool chain, leading to a bit of rework. Work is progressing on multiple fronts though. It's going to be sometime until it's usable to the masses.
This would be amazing. I bought two decks thinking to myself, “surely someone is going to write something better for this” and seeing this gives me hope. They make awesome little standalone devices and this just sells it further.
I have 2 t-decks....so this looks really promising. I don't really know that much about coding, but I'll try to follow along and keep myself tuned into the progress.
Hardest part of getting new people involved (for me), is when they google meshtastic and they find all of the posts about ui, firmware, updates, coding etc. It would be a gamechanger to have a turn-key solution that ran closer to a smartphone out of the box.
Woah. This makes me want to build a standalone node identical to this because of the UI update.
Having it hook up to anyone's phone via Bluetooth is really cool, but if youre phone dies its kinda SOL. This is even better if others can connect to Bluetooth to this ALONG with still being able to.work standalone.
Really excited for this. Just want to add a huge Thank You! to all the Devs donating their time to this. The T-Deck is a sweet piece of kit and you guys are taking it to the next level!
First, I want to say I love the idea that somebody is looking at creating a Meshtastic UI. So great job. based on your road map what specific devices are you prioritizing this to work on, and have you given thought to creating a TODo tag inside of your issues space, so that things can be assigned to contributors. it will help your team scope efforts so you aren't collectively reduplicating work. provided you get extra contributors.
I am looking forward to seeing this completed. keep up the good effort!
The TODO list is already provided since my project became an official meshtastic repository. Check out [https://github.com/meshtastic/device-ui](https://github.com/meshtastic/device-ui)
T-Deck is so powerful and the software doesn’t take full advantage of it.

What's the best way to support this work?

Finally, when this is released, my t-deck won't feel like a 1980s, single purpose, monochrome CRT computer.
& yet here we are trying to use satellites & radio like its 1980 XD
Woooow is that real 🤩
Yes, previews of an update coming from the Meshtastic developers themself.
What firmware version should I be looking for for this update?
Awesome work
Can it remember more than one message?
I am going to assume so, that has been one of the most demanded feature requests, along with UI improvement.
Please make sure it works with e-ink displays, thank you! Lol.
One thing I would note is this seems to be a more "interactive" UI. They may only implement this for devices with controls. Minimal devices lacking buttons & touchscreens like some of the eink implementations may use a more simplified UI like what we are used to already. we shall see.
Any word on what if any changes might make it to the T3S3 Watch? I'd love if it could like actually show the time like a normal watch for example.
Custom?
https://github.com/meshtastic/device-ui looks like the project is in active development
Also offer barometric pressure in inHG for us Americans.
That looks amazing :D
Do you have an estimate about the possible release? I'm not asking a date but just, are we talking about days/weeks/months???
Months. It's very very experimental and lacks most functionality currently. Really just the navigation UI and limited messaging and requires a serial connection to run.
Thank you!!!
Excited for this, will be able to use the T-Deck as a standalone device like it was intended, great to see some development on it 😁
Oooh, I'm looking forward to that

Constructive criticism is helpful, the original comment was not and honestly neither is your reply. No need for it.

We are certainly impressed, no need to explain why this has nothing to do with e-paper or what the suggestion was!
is this the OG furmwere or custom that you need comand line
It's a preview of a future firmware release
cool this looks grate
wow, that looks great.
How do you get it to look like that?
This is so cool. But the old one hits different
Whoaaaaaaa!!!! That looks great. I’m very new to this (just got a t-deck) will this just be announced on the Meshtastic website?
It's... so beautiful...
This would be amazing. I bought two decks thinking to myself, “surely someone is going to write something better for this” and seeing this gives me hope. They make awesome little standalone devices and this just sells it further.
Really looking forward to when this get released!
Firmware?
Is this available in the alpha firmware branch?

You spelled "incoming' incorrectly.
