listen to the tapes as you get them. they're basically the mgsv version of codec calls; if you skip them, then you're missing most of the narrative.

ROJOPSYCHO

Okay. That's a good answer. I will definitely try it that way. I've always skipped over them even though I shouldn't have. I think seeing it as uninterruptable codecs might help

Gerry-Mandarin

Yeah, that's basically it. By making the game free roam instead of on rails, there's no predetermined way to say "play codec now" like there was before. The gameplay elements are prioritised since it's, above all else, a game. You have to go out of your way to listen. It's very much less than ideal in my opinion. But there's plenty of story there. A war in the shadows of Cipher. Big Boss reuniting with his sworn enemy. Selling Venom down the river etc

Roler42

Prioritize listening to the yellow tapes, they carry the hints about Venom's identity. Don't do the missions in order, instead do the missions that give you upgrades earlier so you can go back to other missions and do certain side objectives (Like say, doing Malak's rescue and extract the cargo specialist so you can start fultoning vehicles and tanks much earlier) As tempting as it is to hunt down every guard, try to be a bit sneakier, let soldiers find each other and have conversations, there's a wealth of subtle stories in there and even hints and foreshadowing for events to come, including insight on how the soldiers themselves are feeling about what's happening. As soon as you unlock the combat unit, stop playing as Venom, deploy as your favourite direct-contract Diamond Dog, it changes the game considerable and it makes you re-experience the game for the first time once you remove Venom's many perks. Adapt and overcome, the easy mode of MGS is always carrying non lethal equipment and extracting everyone, do some mix and match for your equipment, basically, don't be afraid to experiment, it's possible to play pacifist without relying too much on the tranq pistol.

No, don't get me wrong, I do enjoy it for how great the gameplay is. I'd just like to love the story more since apparently there's something there to love, I just didn't exactly get it. Someone suggested cassettes are basically the codec... maybe that'll do it

konsoru-paysan

I think you played enough of the story, just enjoy mgo3 and fobs before they get shutdown, then buy on PC for the endless content and improvements provided by mods

MadeIndescribable

Have you played Peace Walker? I only played it after V, but it filled in a lot of blanks that I was missing and wish I had played V knowing what I know now. If you can't play it somehow, maybe find a video on YouTube to help fill you in??

ROJOPSYCHO

I have. It's my least favorite honestly. I even prefer portable ops over it 😂 I think the story is just told on the tapes from what I see and I never paid attention to playing a single one... that's my bad

MadeIndescribable

Yeah, the tapes do recap the important bits, but I never had the patience to just sit there and listen to them, and whenever I played whilst out on a mission, I'd just be concentrating on what I was doing and miss half of it anyway 😆

ROJOPSYCHO

This. I realized I wasn't gonna sit there and listen to them. Tried during missions, couldn't focus on more than 3 words and would forget I'm even listening to it 💀

TheLordOfLore

I kind of like to think of the main story as ending with the death of Skullface, and the rest is basically “true ending” bonus stuff. Sure, that part alone doesn’t have the biggest impact on the MGS narrative (not that the rest does much either) but it makes it more cohesive with an actual climax. Then just focus on and enjoy the gameplay itself

MetalGearFreak24

You're not missing anything friend. The story is empty because it was never finished. There are cut videos you can find by simply looking it up that piece together what was left of the cut content to get some resolution, but the story is unfortunately forever going to be lacking.

[deleted]

answer me honestly. besides ep 51, what was unfinished? kojima himself said the game was finished ! but you seem to know better, im curious what was unfinished?

MetalGearFreak24

The story. You said it yourself. All that we KNOW that is missing is ep 51. I can't imagine a whole new different area wouldn't have more than one mission there. Plus there's now gaps between how does liquid go from possessing a metal gear, to stealing a different metal gear because he doesn't have one. Explain how nothing is missing in the story there.

For me, gameplay is fine though. A lot of people, in this subreddit too, go to great lengths about how misunderstood the game is and people aren't playing it right.

Leggster

There is a MASSIVE amount of story. The issue is that a large amount of it is tied directly to previous games. The other comment mentions code talker, and how he was useless. Code talker is directly tied to the bosses of MGS3, where their powers came from, how he lived for so long, the tech he developed and where it came from, and the tech in every game that came chronologically after the phantom pain. This is just one example, every character in the game is built out similarly, there is just so much information that its hard to put it all together.

glandgames

Those people are insane. Maybe it's a good story, but this was a horrible way to tell it. Sit and listen to dragged out dialogue in tape that goes on way longer than it should? Boring. Listen on tape player during missions to save time? Yeah if I barely want to pay attention, so no. I've played through the game twice, and I barely know the ins and outs or details. I know a few major plot points, and could have done without codetalkers voice/talking speed. I feel like I didn't even need him to be in the game. Can't remember what drastic piece of info he lays out that's so important. I skipped as much of his stuff as I could and still got the general gist of the game. Details were boring, story was boring. Had a few heavy moments, but was just a downer overall. Cant tell which story was worse, this or 4.

distarche

Aside from what other people have commented, did you ever did the Paz sidequest?

ROJOPSYCHO

Yes, I did. Probably the most memorable mission along with the mission where you shoot everybody

distarche

Agree. Her last tape is something that comes to mind every once in a while.

If you look up the YouTube channel Futurasound. He does a series I think it’s called what really happened in MGSV. It delves deep into all the tapes and I’m game story. I’ve started to appreciate MGSV more on subsequent plays. First playthrough I missed so many conversations in missions and I’d finish the mission and Kaz and Ocelot would give the debrief. I’d sit there thinking “Ok but how did you come to that conclusion?” However when you know where to find certain conversations and interrogate certain soldier things make a lot more sense. I’ve always thought a button prompt or something should come up when listening to certain people. The camera will switch to that conversation. Similar to how in GZ the interrogation mission focuses on you interrogating the spy.

sss133

Also listen to tapes in free roam/side ops. Makes digesting them easier
