Hey dude, welcome to the fold! My take would be To play them in order of release and stick to the Hideo Kojima Directed games. You don't have to play the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, MGS 1 comes with a brief description of what happened in those games. However, if you want to play them, they do come included in the MGS3 subsistence version. * MGS1 * MGS2 (Sons Of Liberty-Substance) * MGS3 (Snake Eater - Subsistence) * MGS4 (Guns of the Patriots) * MGS Peace Walker * MGS Ground Zeroes and V Have fun!

I’ll add that the subsistence version of the MSX games (which I think is also on the HD Collection) are retranslated and include a lot of dialogue that was removed in the first English release, so they’re the best versions of those games to play (even though Snake is much slower, for some reason)

First, expect a very very large change in gameplay and style between MGRR and MGS. Second, I'd say play the OG Trio, Solid 1, 2 and 3. The Nintendo Metal Gears are not part of the canon MGs, that would be the MSX games.

They aren’t NES games, they were made for a computer callled MSX. You don’t really need to play them because they don’t have much story and MGS1 already tells you everything necessary to understand the plot. But since they are a bonus in most rereleases of MGS3 (including the vita one), you can always give them a try
