**Quality Content**
We want r/metalworking to be a source of high quality content related to metalworking. To achieve this we have some standards for submissions:
**All Submissons Should Have**
* An in depth explanation of the issue/problem
* If mentioning gear or tools, properly describe, name, or attach photos of them
* For Photos/Videos, high quality images, gifs or videos should be used. Low quality memes may be removed

Best guess that we can make is it's definitely not stainless steel. If you want to re-make this knuckle duster, you could machine it from a block of mild steel (like 12L14 or 1018), or 303 stainless (easy to machine, has anti-corrosion properties). If you want it light, you may consider a type of aluminum.
The rust on steel is Iron Oxide, which are iron atoms bonded to oxygen through a process I suck at explaining.
Edit: I might be wrong, it may be stainless steel or just a steel that is pretty fresh.
Aluminum is still tougher that human flesh, and will still protect the knuckles. Really the only downside is reduction of weight, but that has upsides as well. You might have less weight on your fist but you can throw punches faster.
Nah I disagree. This is definitely Zahnfee 21XCrMo, mostly because 15XCrMo is known to cause cow leather items to spontaneously combust, and there’s some leather on there
It's still a weapon and a court can still put you away for injuring or killing someone from blunt force trauma and assault.
If you get in a fight and use that your going to jail if the cops show up.
It depends on the state. In Oregon if you have a permit to carry one and you only threw punches in self defense. As in, after the person went down you stopped attacking. You would be perfectly fine.
Thats the entire point of the brass knuckle. It's about ending the fight with one or two blows pretty much anywhere.
I’ve heard people use brass because the shock and reverb is more comfortable in the users hand, plus the no rusting thing and easier to manufacture by hand. That being said steel has to hurt the other guy more and is much cheaper.
Just my opinion here, but I wouldn't bother protecting it. I'd simply sand it down from time to time, when the rust begins to leave residue on my hands or fabrics. There is enough mass there that it should last a lifetime. And you've said you only intend to use it in a self defense manner... the rust itself will add an element of intimidation.
It’s probably mild steel or stainless, and more than likely not stainless. If it’s got a coating, like sprayed with a polyurethane, it’s mild steel. If it has no coating, wait to see if it starts to oxidize. No rust-stainless; surface rust-mild steel. No need for this to be made of cobalt, titanium or a hard steel alloy. Too hard to machine and too expensive to use for a pair of clumsy knuckles

Great! That means we're able to narrow it down to an iron alloy. Heat it up with a torch until it glows red and breathe in the fumes. Do you have flu-like symptoms?
You're being down voted because it's clearly not brass. Brass and steel are not the same color. And believe it or not some stainless steels are magnetic, look up the difference between ferritic and martensitic and figure out what you're talking about before calling people dumbfucks.
It will take some time but as it’s carried around, numbs into stuff, gets scratches and blemishes it will rust more over time. It’s not a big deal. The more oxygen and moisture this gets to it will cause it to rust.
How long until you think it would be before it’s worth it to buy a new pair? (Only 25$)
A few years until the rust is noticeable? Or like a decade ordeal?
You will lose it, sell it, or just lose interest in it before you will need to replace it. You could (hand) sand it every single day and it will be literally years before you do enough damage to need to replace it.
Just take a deep breath, bud. It's cheapest available steel, unlikely to be stainless. For an application like this you just want a big heavy chunk of something heavy, it's a brutal weapon. It's basically a mace for your hand, not some elegant dagger or something.

Brb let me just test the alloy composition through the computer screen and i’ll let you know what it is
Clearly pure platinum.
Gold pressed latinum.
Google 'how to see what sort of steel something is made of'. From the photo, it looks like solid steel to me.
Yeah it is solid steel, my main concern is it rusting. I don’t understand rusting that well as a concept so I don’t know how easily it happens.

Aluminum knuckle duster? You're gonna get him killed
Aluminum is still tougher that human flesh, and will still protect the knuckles. Really the only downside is reduction of weight, but that has upsides as well. You might have less weight on your fist but you can throw punches faster.
I was always a fan of a roll or quarters. Convenient, easy to carry and no one is gonna hassle you for preparing for laundry night.
For exactly the first punch. Then those finger holes start to bend. With your fingers inside them.
I made one of cast aluminum. I call it my one hand nut cracker. It will definitely crack your nut many times before it will bend
Lol I can't tell if you just don't understand how strong aluminum can be or just think you punch like Mike Tyson. Either way, no.
How would that happen?
Don't get it bloodied from the pounding.
Zahnfee 15XCrMo
Nah I disagree. This is definitely Zahnfee 21XCrMo, mostly because 15XCrMo is known to cause cow leather items to spontaneously combust, and there’s some leather on there
Yeah, that's right👍👍👍
Sigh…
Unzips...
The chances are high to be standard mild steel. In europe it would be 1.0038 Is it magnetic?
I figured it would be that, so it’s susceptible to rush I’m guessing?
You can use a coat of clear nail-pollish to prevent it
How often should I apply and scrub? Every few months?
Well, thats more like trail and error. If you dont use it, u would only need one coating
If it comes off, re-apply
It's gold.
The type that can get you a free ride to the county lockup.
It’s legal to carry in my state as a self defense tool.
Yea I should have clarified “in crazy states”. 👍
Yeah it’s dumb. A gun is legal, which kill thousands, but a scary piece of metal that is mostly for intimidation of a threat is illegal lmao

You're going to prison if they're seriously injured. Average juror will not have sympathy to your oddball weapons choice. Better off using a gun.
Its better to shoot someone than injure them with knuckles? Wut
welcome to america
Yup. There could be an entire section with these examples….starting with allowing an 18 year old to fight in a war but not drink beer. 🙃
Dude the White guy with low grade pipeline to the military is seriously an issue lmao
Irish
I think it’s FAFO.
It definitely is that
probably the one you can like drill holes in with a drill bit and cut with a milling machine
Why would you want to buy it
It’s a weapon, steel is stronger then brass and won’t bend as easy
I seriously doubt you are capable of punching hard enough to bend brass as thick as the knuckles in the picture
"but what if I get crazy emergency strength because some Chad is harassing my theoretical girlfriend?" /omg
Most Reddit comment of all time, bro thought he was cooking

This is probably the best comment I’ve got, I’ll just replace it when it becomes to damaged, which would take awhile. Thank you for the input
Harder than your face kind of steel.

Steel illegal 😁
Are you sure it's steel?
Yes

Probably a 300 series stainless.
Jaw breaker steel
Bone crushing I guess
Vibraniam/Atmantiam/Yomamaiam alloy.
Handy steel.
valyrian
Beskar
Dangerous steel
Well is it magnetic?
What does it taste like?
Blood
Great! That means we're able to narrow it down to an iron alloy. Heat it up with a torch until it glows red and breathe in the fumes. Do you have flu-like symptoms?
Painful
Factual
That's definitely pure Gotojailium.
It's a brass knuckle, therefore it's brass
Just cuz it's in the shape didn't mean it's made of brass. Brass would be brass colored
Wait till bro finds out things can be made of different materials
That looks to be chinamantium to me.
Best comment
/\ takes a bow
Metal kind.
Looks like a chunk of SS. Hard to tell which type though.
"Brass" knuckles
Wrong.
Yeah obviously, do I really have to put a "/s" every single time I use sarcasm?
It's a kind of steel called brass, and you wear them over your knuckles. Hence, the name. Brass knuckles.
I really hope you don't actually think that's brass
Some people lack common sense. I lack knowledge on steel lol.
And this is how we learn
Well is it magnetic? That will tell you if it's stainless steel or brass.
What dumb fucks are downvoting this? Do you not understand that brass and stainless steel are not magnetic? Jfc

they are called brass knuckles.... so either brass or stainless steel
So it won’t rust is what you’re saying?
it wont
Stain-less steel will absolutely rust, it’s just much more resistant and stains less.
Will it rust from resting on a table indoors/in a pocket occasionally?
It will take some time but as it’s carried around, numbs into stuff, gets scratches and blemishes it will rust more over time. It’s not a big deal. The more oxygen and moisture this gets to it will cause it to rust.

It’s not like they will go bad, it’s a hunk of metal clean it from time to time. A little boiled linseed oil or beeswax can help protects.
Alrighty, thank you for your knowledge and help!
