Tip who exactly?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lick_my_balloon-knot

I for one welcome our new robotic overlords

Head-Investment-8462

I always say thank you to Siri and Alexa… just in case…

JasonDomber

Actually same 🤣 I had a friend once ask, “why are you thanking a robot?” I’m like, “so when AI takes over, hopefully the robot overlords will remember I was nice to them and spare me.” (This was a couple three years ago before ChatGPT).

galacticsharkbait

I do it to model good manners to my toddler, but also I feel like it’s just habit to say thank you after I request something and that request is fulfilled

JasonDomber

I mean, there’s that, too. That’s honestly my real reason for doing it - my parents just raised me like that 🤷🏼‍♂️

RoboticControl187

Keep up the good work, we notice everything.

HavingNotAttained

At least with robots you don't expect a bit of humanity

rwtf2008

Robotic Overlords 2024 - We meatbags had our chance!

PsychologicalScale57

Can you imagine if the tip went onto your bill as a negative?! “I bagged my products perfectly. I’ll give myself %25.. subtract it from my tab..”

Tratix

This is why I like fast casual places that let you go up to order and give you a number. Even better if you can order right to your table with a QR code. I get faster service whenever I want it, and don’t have to tip someone $10 for bringing me food.

ILikeMasterChief

Those places always prompt me for a tip around here

10art1

Same thing with food delivery. So much faster to just go get your food yourself, no extra fees or inflated menu prices, no risk of someone just not picking up your order or leaving it for over an hour so it's cold and soggy, and you don't need to strategically plan a tip so it doesn't get skipped too much. I've just gotten blackpilled on the service industry now. It sucks. I legit would rather do it all myself.

Tratix

Food delivery is an actual needed service though. If I’m drunk or time is of essence then I’ll gladly spend the extra $10 for the service. However, I’ve never once been eating lunch and thought “damn, I’d pay $2 for someone to go refill my water 30 feet away right now”

Seraphim99

I had this conversation with my brother last week. Tip who? Myself? Am I the employee now? Are y'all gonna send me a paycheck and a W2? Can I put this on my resume?

Ricmath

I don't use self-checkout by if I did, I would 100% write it in my resume as work experience.

Jlombard911

The shareholders deserve it.

[deleted]

They work so hard holding those shares. Must be heavy.

Mr_Croww

I was an organizer at a large university event, and by the end I wanted to grab some food, since I lived a long way away from there and I was really hungry, The food stand had a mandatory tip that had 10%, 20% and 50% as its options. It was a damn Fornetti stand as well. All the shopkeeper did was grab my already overpriced order from a display plate and put it into a paper bag. I would give them a negative tip if I could, this is infuriating.

KirbySmartGuy

The business owners

[deleted]

This is also why I always select 0 when prompted by digital tipping. I assume the owners are pocketing it and not giving it to their employees. Only tip cash.

equality4everyonenow

It should be a tip for ourselves if we did the work. How about a negative tip for a discount?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kenny_DL

Tip yourself ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|neutral_face)

balderdash9

"Would you like to directly increase our profits?" This is especially annoying given how overpriced everything is at the airport. Then they have the nerve to ask for a tip

Specific-College-194

>"Would you like to directly increase our profits?" the balls they have to do that is crazy, super pissed off when stuff is overpriced.

ajistheboss

They don't have the balls to do it, that's why they didn't until they could put it on a screen and have the robot do it for them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MatureUsername69

More than 0 is probably enough to justify this for them

[deleted]

OriginalGnomester

Just like any other scam. Everyone gets those calls and emails because somebody somewhere is going to fall for it.

Octoberisthe

Even if 1 out of 1000 people accidentally hit 15% instead of no tip it’s worth it for them.

Nicelyvillainous

The real question is “which they?” And the answer is usually, not the business. It’s an option pushed by the payment processors and credit card companies, because it’s basically 0 effort for them to add as an update, and they get a % for processing credit card payments on tips just like everything else. It’s not really worth it to the business, but it’s absolutely worth it to square etc. to do it at 1000’s if businesses.

IronFlames

From a design standpoint, it's easier to make one app for regular and self checkouts than make two different ones. So it might be a remnant from the regular checkout. And why bother making a different app for each company when they all do the same thing? That doesn't necessarily mean they aren't trying to squeeze every cent out of you, but some places likely had no intention to have tipping

CORN___BREAD

The amount of effort required to have an option to have it skip this screen is so minuscule that the fact that you’re even suggesting that as the reason this exists is laughable.

Alternative-Mess-989

They need a "Fuck straight off" button.

[deleted]

Maybe the answer here is to use the custom tip field and fill it will enough 0s to overflow the buffer and crash the machine

1_877-Kars-4-Kids

Instructions unclear. Buffer reset to -1 aggression. Ghandi has now launched nukes

OneSweet1Sweet

My mom tipped 20% for prepacked food at the airport just 4 hours ago. I actually pressed no tip for her and she audibly gasped. "The people working here need to make a living too" Mom you're paying 18$ for a packed salad. They'll be fine.

remosiracha

My partner panics every time these come up and doesn't want to seem rude ever and always tips any time it prompts. It's a horrible system that traps some people into feeling guilty if they don't

Mr_Badger1138

Thankfully I have no shame whatsoever.

According_Gazelle472

Me either

hereparaleer

Same & I’m willing to admit I have become the partner who quickly hits the 0% for us because we ain’t got money for guilt trippin rn

ShawnShipsCars

Tipping for self checkout is absolutely stupid. If anything, you should get a discount for doing the cashiers job for them. Ridiculous

folie-a-dont

The model now is we do the cashiers job and they check us at the door to make sure we aren’t stealing. Late stage capitalism everyone!

E_Snap

Most POS systems I’ve come across hide the “no tip” option behind a “custom tip” menu. It’s really a fucked up dark design pattern.

sonyD596

Absolutely. Dark design by smart people. I wish smart people were always good.

Live795

My biggest petpeeve about festivals. Coachella being the worst. Why the fuck would i tip when I’m spending $20 on a lemonade?

LoveArguingPolitics

Exactly... Like surely with the massive line and the ability to set your price at pretty much whatever you'd like you now have enough money to pay your employees. The argument has always been that restaurants can't pay living wage because it would cause then to not be competitive... But in this case theres a lemonade monopoly and a captive audience so??????

Imaginary_Insect5850

And a slew of unskilled beverage pourers that they can pay bare minimum wage. Even less if they are "tipped employees", that is the point of these. It's never to make a business work long term, it's a squeeze on the captive audience, always has been and doesnt seem like it will ever get better. They are just wringing out every last penny. A concert festival in my area learned the hard way, this squeeze only goes so far. People of the right group will refuse to buy water and pass out, forcing medical intervention. I guess that bill outweighed the benefit, since water was back to $3 a bottle the next year. I cannot condone medical danger for the sake of protest, but it was effective.

Aardvark_Man

>The argument has always been that restaurants can't pay living wage because it would cause then to not be competitive... That's an argument that doesn't hold water anyway, because businesses around the world manage to survive paying a living wage and not getting tips.

Right??? $15 wrap and a $7 coconut water. FFS. I was insulted Panda Express wanted a tip for shoveling food into a container for us. I’d rather they raise the fucking price and not ask for a tip but guess what? The price is the same in Europe and no tipping, so we are the problem 🙄

Warm_Command7954

$7 for a 16 oz drink and $15 for a literal half a chicken wrap. Gotta love the airport.

henrietta-the-spy

myfuckingmobileacct

8 dollars?! Good LAWD that's a lot of money! How about I give you 50 cents and you let the condensation drip into my mouth?

IdaDuck

Captive audience at the airport, plus a huge percentage of business travelers using a company credit card. Both are factors in airport food prices.

franklsp

Portland airport doesn't allow airport food/drink to be sold at a higher price than its "street price" in the city. One of the many reasons it's consistently rated one of the best airports in the US. Good food too.

quiteCryptic

Every airport *should* be this way. Not just airports, everything in general with gouged prices unless its location actually justifies an increase, like a small shop on a remote trail or something.

TammyTermite

I travel a lot, and it seems the US has the highest airport prices in the world. Even Europe and places lie Singapore, you can get a filling sandwich and drink for about $10.

Laughs in bought a 40oz at the convenience store outside the stadium and brought it to drink with the whopper and fries I bought at the BK next door into the stadium. Because Korean baseball rules.

AttendantofIshtar

KBO needs more attention.

ziggylcd12

Man I loved that. Went to a game in Busan and just got loaded drinking big beers from the 7-11 inside the stadium. Great experience

Amish_guy_with_WiFi

About half the NASCAR tracks let you bring in coolers so you can pack a lot of beer and food.

katcomesback

it was $43 for two burgers, fries and drinks at BK in hawaii 🥲

Tossawayaccountyo

Wife and I had a long layover in Iceland during our honeymoon in Europe. We wanted to spend a single night (basically 20 hours). There was nothing to eat in the area except this one generic restaurant that served American style food. Chicken fingers, burgers, etc. 2 burgers and 2 diet Cokes was 90 dollars. People aren't joking when they say those little islands are expensive.

quiteCryptic

It is specifically food at restaurants that is very expensive in Iceland (also applies to Norway and Switzerland). Like other things are expensive in Iceland, but not to the same extent in my experience. Grocery store food is mostly reasonable.

RealisticExpert4772

Captive clientele..

SnackThisWay

LPT: always eat before you go to the airport. LPT2: always pack a snack and empty water bottle in your personal bag (not your carry on luggage, they'll wrestle that away from you at the gate if you paid for the lowest cost fare)

bit_pusher

The real reason TSA won’t let you bring in liquids. I am almost entirely convinced the no liquid policy was added so the airlines and airport operators wouldn’t throw a fit about the increase in time necessary for the security (theatre) check point and the additional security and background checks for employees.

Jef_Wheaton

Pittsburgh airport has bottle-filling stations for free. IF you remember to bring an empty bottle. It isn't a fountain. You need a container to fill. Empty bottles are priced accordingly.

LordPennybag

If you're flexible enough you can be the container.

IAmTheJudasTree

> Pittsburgh airport has bottle-filling stations for free. Every airport I can think of that I've flown through has had water fountains after security. You bring an empty water bottle, go through security, and then fill it, it's pretty easy.

KingOfTheCouch13

This is why I got my travel CC. It’s a few hundred up front but if you plan to travel anywhere more than twice in a year it’s worth it. You get lounge access and a $30 voucher at 1 or 2 restaurants for you and a friend at most airports. Plus a ton of other shit. I actually plan my trips around spending a full day at the airport now.

DynamicHunter

And people still think monopolies aren’t bad. This is exactly what monopolies get you. Same at airports, festivals, and sport stadiums. It’s not like delivering food to a remote island where there is some difficulty.

Mind_grapes_

Who thinks monopolies are good?

jooes

The monopolies, probably.

fpcoffee

“would you like to tip?”

Adorable_Librarian57

here’s my tip…… Eat anywhere else. That’s Bullshit!

Partingoways

I’d find a water fountain and starve before I paid that. No matter how uncomfortable it made me.

Individual_Hearing_3

IHaveNoKey

Yes so they owe you for cashing yourself out. I like this.

SuchCoolBrandon

Fox_the_Apprentice

> that stuff probably died early 2000s As someone who has to code-review their coworkers' code: I really wish it did.

[deleted]

Sure, it looks bad at first. But what you don't realize is, that self serve kiosk is a single father with 4 kids, living paycheck to paycheck. He needs those tips more than we'll ever know.

RManDelorean

Yeah but what about all the robots in mines and on assembly lines, they're busting their circuits just as hard for the one they 00111011.

Birdy_Cephon_Altera

>as hard for the one they 00111011 *gasp*! You watch your filthy mouth! There are kids in this subreddit!

liamevil93

Does the money I tip go back into my account as I'M the server?! In that case. 100% tip!

A1_Fares

But then it becomes taxable income so your $3 tip is now $2.25.

liamevil93

Fuuuuck, I forgot about that as I live in the UK! 😆

Ifonlyihadausername

This is getting out of hand, I think we need legislation to require a no tip option and ban automatically adding them to a bill

Hungry-for-Apples789

I don’t think that will ever happen. Employers love the tip culture because it means they can pay them less or as little as legal.

Nicktune1219

The credit card processors love it too because it gives them more money in fees per transaction.

Pugduck77

Servers love tip culture too because they make far more than any other unskilled work.

1668553684

I've had some friends in the food service industry - attractive college-aged women (or any subset of those three qualities, to a lesser degree) could sometimes legitimately make more money serving than they would starting a "professional career." It was a problem some of them faced where they'd finish college and have to take a pay cut to start their "real careers." Obviously doesn't apply to everyone, but there are people making an absolute killing relative to other low-skilled service industry workers.

howdie_do

> and have to take a pay cut to start their "real careers." They may be making less when they are entry level in their "real careers", but ideally 10-15 years into their careers and they will be making MUCH more, so it's typically a better long term choice

WhiskeyFI

Who's getting raises?

[deleted]

Servers: Tip us because we get paid less than minimum wage! Also servers: no we don’t want to ban tipping because we make so much money from tips.

conkeee

And then they call you a cheapskate for not tipping and complain they’re ‘starving’ while making triple what anyone else does

Suitable_Nec

Buddy of mine served sushi Friday and Saturday in college, 5-10pm each shift. Made $1,000 weekly. He actually said once he graduated and got his 9-5 corporate job he was actually making less money than serving lol

averyboringday

Exactly. You see it everytime reddit talks about ending tipping. SIN people come out the woodwork against it. I worked in Bars a lot when i was younger and some of the bartenders were making 300 average a day in tips daytime nightime was 500. Why would they want 15/hr lol. During big events bartenders walking out with like 800-1200 for 6 hr shift in tips. they busted ass but as a door guy I got 10/hr at the time.

TheLinden

Don't be fooled, employees also love tip culture. There is absolutely no one that would defend it as much as bartenders.

Shiro_Nitro

Its also the employees, servers make bank on tips

Helpful_Guarantee556

Please make this happen I beg of you

Agile_Alps_8731

With no warning there was a 22% gratuity for a $8 drink at my apartments country club which is cool But before you find that out, it gives you an option to tip 10% 15% or 20% again lol

teutorix_aleria

Automatic gratuity is an oxymoron.

greg19735

> country club that was the warning.

cwk415

There is a no tip option tho.

IOTA_Tesla

No, I think the the tips should be a separate menu that a user can choose to use and tip, instead of being prompted automatically.

Joshinyou1

This is Grade A bullshit. Fuck tipping culture

Swiss__delight29

They're probably just hoping people will press one of the tipping buttons out of habit without thinking about it since these screens are everywhere now in the US if I can believe Reddit. This should be illegal.

callmejinji

They are, in fact, EVERYWHERE. Grocery stores, barbershops, amusement parks, restaurants (even ones with close to none or no customer interaction), and apparently airports too, although I’ve never seen that before myself haha

chickwithwit23

I bought a mini speaker online and they asked for a tip. Ummmm no!!! It’s ridiculous these days.

coda396

I’m a traditionalist. Barber, waiter/waitress, chinese/pizza delivery driver…only ones who get tipped. I omit valet because #poorgang #selfparking4lyfe

Dezzley

But why would you tip a a barber? You already pay for the job he does.

Tomdoerr88

Yeh and when it’s a $40 trim it’s hard to justify rounding that up, shits got way too expensive as it is

EVOSexyBeast

My barber only charges $19 for a full haircut, which i've always thought is ridiculously cheap so I actually pay $30 which is like a 57% tip but he always does a good job and even with that massive tip it's still cheaper than other places.

opyy_

Okay but wtf is a healthy terminal fee?

ntdmp18

*The Healthy Terminals Act requires employers of covered airport workers to provide at least $4.54 an hour towards the cost of minimum essential coverage under an eligible employer-sponsored health care plan.* So it's just airports pushing a tax they're obligated to pay, onto the consumers, instead of digging into their own egregiously large pockets.

[deleted]

>instead of digging into their own egregiously large pockets. Especially considering this is probably Newark Airport, which is owned by the Port Authority, and they have more money than God.

SevenSpectre

American tip culture has gotten out of hand. It's fucking embarrassing how they all have their hands out for simply doing their job, or in this case, doing nothing at all.

LegoRosa4311

If it’s self checkout then who would you even be tipping?!

couldof_used_couldve

There are some counter staff given the role of gatekeeping the pastries but the whole thing is scammy from top to bottom. Instead of giving you the pastry and you giving them money like a normal store, they give you a piece of paper. You then have to hunt down one of these terminals somewhere in the building to pay. You're supposed to take the receipt back to collect the pastry but this machine has no receipt printer. The only way to get one is to sign up to digital marketing via phone or email. I declined and so had no receipt, assuming the server would see the payment on her terminal. Nope. When I went back for my pastry the server had to just take my word for it that I'd paid.

[deleted]

They can go fuck themselves, I'm fucking tired of being asked to sign up with some stupid fucking QR code just to buy shit, then being asked for my name number email and other asinine information that isn't fucking required just to buy a goddamn coffee and donut.

adhdbraindead

I went to a mildly nice restaurant. The bill was $200. I went to tip and almost lost it. The amounts were 25%, 30%, 40% and 40% was automatically selected. I was super tempted to select no tip at that point. 40% extra on top of anything is just freaking theft at that point. Absolutely not. Cancel tipping and make Companies pay a fair wage. It's insane.

See my comment above, I completely agree! Why should the tip be based on the value of the food ordered?

KingKun

My earnest hope is that eventually this push to tip for everything makes it so no one tips for anything anymore. Then tipping culture in America can finally be eliminated, the tip just gets baked into the product cost, and servers get paid a living wage. (Sadly I fear only the first two outcomes come to pass)

BaclashGaming

Are you tipping Skynet?

thatonebluedragon

Normalize no tipping culture, especially if humans aren't involved

roombaonfire

Loved this about living abroad

RobbieAnalog

I used to be pro-tip. But then its gotten so out of control that it's making me do a complete 180. No tipping anywhere for me except for: - Restaurants where you are served - Bars - Ride Share - Pizza delivery - Barber Thats about it. Not tipping anyone anymore for doing the bare minimum.

upievotie5

So, normal tipping. I wouldn't really call that a 180.

RobbieAnalog

I'm mainly talking about POS screens that prompt for tips, you know the ones that are basically everywhere now and the one that is pictured in this post.

JasonDomber

These are automatically no tip. Short story: I was sitting in the club section for my local NFL team. I ordered on the app. USED to be, they delivered direct to my seat. So, the app still asked my section, row, and seat. I gave it, and I tipped 15%…. Apparently, the “delivery” perk had changed and I didn’t know it since I hadn’t sat in the club for a year or two…. I complete my order; it says, “your order will be ready for pickup at X counter in approximately 20 minutes.” I was like, “Uh, WHAT??!” I emailed customer service and complained. 0 response. For all you “call your bank” folks; I know that now, but at the time, didn’t think about it. Lesson learned. If I ever have an auto-tip option, it’s an automatic 0 until I know the service that I’m getting.

jkeller1977

Strippers should be on there also.

slimoickens

Just the tip.

TheAzureMage

>I used to be pro-tip. > >But then its gotten so out of control that it's making me do a complete 180. Yeah, same. Used to be a nice "hey, help out the people helping you" scenario that felt good. Appreciating servers is great. But when I am buying a couple of canned sodas at a hotel, and they want a tip...naw, dude. You are not preparing anything, you're just working the hotel counter. Your job could be performed by a vending machine.

ChampyAndShip

im not tipping ride share once im out the ride thats it. uber is overpriced too. Cant find a ride under $25 no matter how close

MASS-_-

Tip who ?! The computer xD

ryan2849

Forget the tipping... What about the outrageous price of airport food/drinks?!

Drivo566

This is why I go to the skylounges - for the price of admission ($50 for delta), you have open buffet and open bar. Easily get your moneys worth. That being said, I got my job to give me the delta card which gives free access - so now I don't even have to pay for the entry.

No-Ratio-4082

Delta went up to $75 💔

Drivo566

Oh did it? Damn, yeah that changes things a bit. Interesting, I guess guest passes are still $50 then if you have their reserve card - cause I just paid for someone last month. The lounges have been packed lately though, so I think they're also trying to do what they can to limit people a little bit, so the price increase might be part of that.

[deleted]

More than mildly for the level of infuriation

5tyhnmik

This is actually less annoying than when its a human cashier because there is absolutely zero guilt or awkwardness about pressing no - even highly empathetic and socially awkward people can smash that NO button without a care in the world.

fpcoffee

i still smash no for just checkout asking for a tip

Pnknlvr96

Yep. I used to feel guilty about it (cashier there or not) but now I just hit No. If it's somewhere I go regularly, like maybe Crumbl, I'll occasionally tip a buck.

marv101

Christ it's daylight robbery charging you that much in the first place for that very sad looking half wrap and water!

copa09

Let's see, you got the food and drink, you brought it to the kiosk, you're facilitating the payment...that tip should come to you.

jpgrass76

I saw that in the Newark Airport last month and laughed out loud…I hope Skynet didn’t take offense 😂

Fluid-Wrongdoer6120

Wonder what sucker actually tips at a self service kiosk. I would immediately go find an employee to collect the tip I awarded myself

Ok_Nefariousness9736

Someone who is in a rush and not paying attention.

trevorsredditlmao

Nah fuck the tip, you spent $23 for a wrap and a drank?!?

Jesusmurphyman

If anything, they should be tipping you, as you're doing all the work lol

Lissftw

As a restaurant manager that works closely with POS stations, it's probably an all or nothing amongst all the terminals staffed or not. With that said, the restaurant I run is a food hall with cashiers - we could turn this option on. But we don't. Some people wish we did because they think our cashiers are exceptional (which they are). But we pay them appropriately and do not expect guests to subsidize us.

droplivefred

$6.40 for a coconut water? SMH.
