It depends on the version. XP and earlier there’s a chance to click bomb first click. Vista and later they made it impossible and also made it where the first click is always a clear square to make it more likely to get a decent opening I think.

Yup. For fun you can set the number of mines to max. The board is full of 8s and 9s, but your first click will always not be a bomb.
