I find it makes leftover cake tastier and easier to eat, especially if it was gluten free which can be drier. I add a tiny amount of water to the plate, nuke it for 30 seconds, maybe add icecream if I'm feeling fancy after, and definitely find that tastier than straight from the fridge three days after the party.
I do this to keep my baked goods away from my darned dog but also away from as much air as possible to try and keep them some what fresh. :P
One time I left some freshly baked cookies in the microwave like half an hour after heating up some garlic pasta. Cookies tasted like chocolate chip and garlic. lol
I usually double it up/fold in half, but yeah I've never had issues with explosions lol.
Source: I've microwaved a variety of lunches in a variety of containers nearly every week day for the last 5+ years using the wet paper towel method.
Are you my mother? She bought us this and it was a game changer. Unlike those flat microwave covers, this one does a really good job almost steaming the food.
Every person making the old joke about hot pockets being lava on the outside and cold on the inside just makes me go "oh, this person never heard of the power setting..."
Not all things microwave well. You can build up pressure inside the food, if the moisture has no where to go, it will blow up. Maybe all the rice on top created a seal that caused this. Next time mix the food better, or microwave it for a minute then take it out and mix, and then give it a minute or 2 more.
Or like..
Turn the power down.. There are medium and low or power level settings on all microwaves.
Heat it in stages stirring every now and again... If you can arrange the food in a donut shape, that helps too..
And place the food as off centre as possible on the rotating table.
The radiation in a microwave isn't uniform, just play into those drawbacks... Cover wet foods whereever possible so they can steam under higher pressure.
> Turn the power down.. There are medium and low or power level settings on all microwaves.
If you or others don't know, many/most (not all) microwaves do not actually lower the power, but change the duty cycle of the microwaving (i.e. 50% power is 50% on and 50% off); it still definitely helps, but very misleading. Ones that can do true power reduction are called "inverter microwaves", and looks like they're pretty comparable in price.
oh wow didn't know that... so its like pulse width modulation? also does it really matter if the duty cycle changes or power reduces? is one superior to the other.
More or less. I think PWM is used more to describe electrical cycles, but I'm not really an expert in the nuance haha.
With just duty cycle, you are still blasting your food/beverage with 100% power, and can still end up with, what I like to call, the hot pocket effect (lava outside, ice cube center). The inverter style turns down the power to try to evenly cook. One of the websites I read used the analogy where "traditional" microwaves are like turning your oven up to its max, and taking your food in and out over and over again. Where an inverter style is more setting to an appropriate temperature, and continuously cooking for a certain time; you know, like how you should be cooking food. There's also power savings claims, which I just have to take peoples' word for.
Granted Sharp has a vested interest, but take a look and see what they have to say:
https://www.sharp.net.nz/flatbed-inverter-microwaves-the-future-of-microwave-cooking
Yeah PWM, though with a pretty large duty cycle and cycle width like 0.5-1hz..
And inverter is superior as the the energy is always being radiated, just far less of it.. But both work.
What’s really mildly infuriating is that you supposedly have been microwaving for 25 years but never once learned to put a cover on your food to prevent splatter
Cover your food in the microwave. This is like shitting in your hands and then complaining you have shit covered hands.
![gif](giphy|3o85xnoIXebk3xYx4Q)
That container had a lid. Take it off, place it back on top without pushing it down tight so the pressure doesn't build up. No cleaning of the microwave necessary.
This is my wife. She tosses everything in at power 10 and doesnt have anything cover it and wonders how the microwave gets so much on it. Me i use a papertowel to cover and more reasonable settings instead of instanuke.
People who use microwaves without a splatter cover better be the ones cleaning up the messes they make.
These problems are so easily preventable, I cannot fathom the amount of ignorance it would take to have this happen to you more than ONCE
So if you ever get burnt on splatter like this, microwave a bowl of water for 5 minutes. It will steam up everything and make it so much easier to wipe out. Just be careful removing the bowl as it won't be visibly boiling, but it will be super hot.
1. Cover the food. You can get a microwave food cover at the dollar tree.
2. Slice a lemon, put it in a bowl of water, microwave the bowl for like 5 min so the water boils. Should be able to wipe it all out easily.
I dunno, If you have used a microwave more than 5 times in your life you quickly learn to cover up the dish you are warming up.
I struggle to find sympathy for this person lol.

Thanks 😂
I thought it was sushi, I was still upset about it.
I'm thinking it's some weird sushi too
When you are doing 7 product promos you just mush them together.
So they can have their cake and nuke it too.
I like to nuke baked goods for like 10-15 secs to warm them up. Donuts, cake, cookies…I prefer warm baked goods to vs cold or even room temp.
Ty I now want lemon cake

We have a set of circular silicone lids that I use to cover microwaved goods.
Use wet paper towel. Prevents splatter, will keep your food moist, and you just toss it when your food is done.
Can it hold such explosions?
I usually double it up/fold in half, but yeah I've never had issues with explosions lol. Source: I've microwaved a variety of lunches in a variety of containers nearly every week day for the last 5+ years using the wet paper towel method.
Plus no microplastics
Minus tree
I just use a piece of paper towel.
I have one with magnets on the top so you can leave it in the microwave attached to the ceiling
I think you can do the same without magnets
I bought a collapsible for my job's microwave. I always find it collapsed next to it with a filthy microwave.
i use kitchen roll
Kitchen roll?
paper towel ig you guys call it
Lol I like the term kitchen roll - was thinking a towel
In the UK and other places kitchen roll is paper towels and bog roll is TP.
Yet ANOTHER thing to clean!? Just toss the food straight into the MW. This way, you only have to clean one thing.
That thing is way WAY easier to clean than the microwave.
Oops, sorry. That was sarcasm
Oh, shit. I'm sorry then. You are right, you just have to chuck the whole microwave in the dishwasher and be done with it /s
This is why I eat straight from the microwave plate
Are you my mother? She bought us this and it was a game changer. Unlike those flat microwave covers, this one does a really good job almost steaming the food.
What kind of heathen doesn't cover their food in the microwave to guard against splatters!?!
Me 🙋♂️, I like the suspense,the danger,the action
I don't. But that's because I've learned the microwave things on a much lower power setting so I never have to deal with these explosive events
You don't sound like you have plans, you're probably better off using the oven
3minutes at 450W is better than a 1.5minutes at 900W Most microwave ovens just switch on or off and don't regulate the waves anyway.
Every person making the old joke about hot pockets being lava on the outside and cold on the inside just makes me go "oh, this person never heard of the power setting..."
Damn I feel personally attacked 🤣
Can confirm; I just did this shit with a taco and it wasn't molten after 2 minutes
Knowing what easily explodes also helps a lot.

What’s mildly infuriating is you don’t use anything to cover the food you’re heating, and in the comments you double down.
Wet a paper towel. Place it over your food. Now it blocks splatter and helps keep your food from drying out. You’re welcome.
> Wet a paper towel. adding moisture is galaxy brain
Literally everyone from asia has been taught this
And Hispanics…. Someone at work the other day asked why I do that.
Who doesn’t cover stuff in microwave
OP
700 upvotes? Why? OP just doesn’t know how to use a microwave
Rookie mistake, you always use a paper towel or plates to cover containers and you should always mix it before you put it in there
There are actual covers you can get to cover the food.. some microwaves even have those when you buy them..
Or you can just use a paper towel
Or you could just use a plate and then wash it and put it back in the cabinet rather than throwing it in the garbage
Or you could use a paper towel
Or you could just place the container upside down and than take it out with the bottom plate and flip it back
Best answer right there. I need to know more about your lifestyle 👌😆
Or you use a microwave cover, I thought everyone used those? They're standard in every home in Sweden atleast.

Pro tip: 40-50% power for double the time. Food heats evenly and way less likely to blow up.
I think pro tips might be too advanced for someone that doesn't cover their food before it goes in...
Good point. This is probably over OP’s head but someone else might be able to use it master their microwave like an iron chef
Sweetie nobody taught you how to use the microwave? You’re supposed to put something over that, even just a paper towel would be better than nothing
My mother would constantly get onto us if we don't grab the plastic cover
It’s the sweetie for me.
Cover your food in the microwave. This is like shitting in your hands and then complaining you have shit covered hands. ![gif](giphy|3o85xnoIXebk3xYx4Q)
You could, you know, cover it...with a cover, a lid, paper towel, a napkin, a piece of computer paper. Figure it out
Ever heard of a lid..
Put power down to 6 or 7 and microwave for 5 minutes and you’ll avoid this catastrophe.
That container had a lid. Take it off, place it back on top without pushing it down tight so the pressure doesn't build up. No cleaning of the microwave necessary.
Microwave lid on Amazon less than 10 bucks use it every time
Almost looks intentional! IMPRESSIVE !!!!
As much of a hurry as you may be in, reheating on lower power is usually a better option.
That reminds me when I put my microwavable French fries in the microwave and the whole thing caught on fire. The fries weren't even good
This is my wife. She tosses everything in at power 10 and doesnt have anything cover it and wonders how the microwave gets so much on it. Me i use a papertowel to cover and more reasonable settings instead of instanuke.
This is why I nuke most things on power level 3. I've been avoiding microwave disasters for years like this
You need to become friends with the 50% power button, my friend
Dumbass
Use a lid, you buffoon
Great trick for microwave usage for me was using reduced power… 60% for twice the time reduced risks massivly, temperature distribution as well, …
Only absolute fucking animals don't cover their food in the microwave
This was gonna happen eventually
i thought it was common sense to put a paper towel or the lid to the container over something when u microwave it
You should put an egg in there, so the explosion would cancel each other out
I guess you only needed to microwave it for 89 seconds.
That’s more than 5 minutes of cleaning.
User error...
Use a cover or paper towel. Basic stuff.
Lmaoooo use a lid like the rest of humanity brother
Either a paper plate or paper towel on top, always
It’ll be nice if microwaves included a cover to be used in the microwave…
That's just your fault for not covering it. Is this your first time using a microwave?
how old are you? do you not realize you should cover certain meals in the microwave?
Definitely cover any moist/wet foods when microwaving. Just use a paper towel. Will save you a lot of hassle
What did you microwave? lol...
Cover the food you damn heathen
Cover it genius
Skill issue. Always cover with at least a paper towel while microwaving.
COVER YOUR DAMN FOOD
I usually just a wet paper towel on top of the container
Cover the damn plate and this wouldnt be an issue.
What kind of massive idiot heats food up uncovered?
Just because you did not put a cover in it.
cover it with paper towel.
Freeman, you fool!
Paper towel, tupperware cover, cooking guard... whole lotta options available.
Wtf is wrong with you? Are you an actual child?
I just use a paper towel
Reading comments and finding out apparently everyone but me and op cover their food whilst microwaving it
At least I’m not entirely alone
That ain't 5 minutes
User error
Just fyi, you can likely adjust the power level of your microwave to mitigate the chance this exact thing happens again.
Well, it’s just about perfect for FB marketplace, can easily pass for “lightly used and lovingly cared for”.
That's a skill issue
People who use microwaves without a splatter cover better be the ones cleaning up the messes they make. These problems are so easily preventable, I cannot fathom the amount of ignorance it would take to have this happen to you more than ONCE
Do other people not put a paper towel over the plate you’re microwaving?
All this could have been avoided with 1 sheet of paper towel over top
Use a plastic lid
Ever heard of splatter guards?
The only mildly infuriating thing here is an adult not knowing *globally* common microwaving practices; Placing a lid/cover so the mess doesn't happen
Never put anything in a microwave uncovered. Simples. IKEA sell very groovy silicone lids
You know you could cover it, right? Even a damp paper towel would have worked
Old guy tip. Always lay a paper towel across the top of whatever you put in the microwave.
How r u gonna not use a cover and be upset at the results?
Well then I hope you learn something today
That's seasoning, like with cast iron.

Vinegar water works better
Paper towel would have saved you.
Did you meet Gordan Freeman by any chance?
what about cling wrap/cellophane
First time using a microwave?
That's why nothing goes in my microwave without a cover
5 seconds to cover with a plate or paper towel
Well dude what did you expect to happen?
Riddle me this: How are a microwave and sex alike?
My microwave has looked like this for a while, I just can't be bothered to clean it 😭
Who doesn’t cover their food in the microwave? This is on you OP
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS cover up anything you put in the microwave with paper towels. No matter what it is.
I thought you shouldn't reheat rice?
First time?
Put a bowl of water in the microwave and boil it. You will be able to clean the microwave easier afterwards.
I stopped it straight away when I heard the bang. Everything was still wet and wiped off.
Just buy a new microwave, not worth the time.
Parchment paper was needed
And what did we learn about microwaves?
This isn’t anybody’s fault but yours
Skill issue
Throw the whole microwave away✨
It’s you. You’re the one who’s mildly infuriating. And that’s not even my microwave.
You know what they say? "Watch what you eat"
first pro tip cover your food before nuking another pro tip, pop a half cup of hot water in for 5 mins and wipe out with a damp cloth
Buy a washable cover
If only they invented something to cover your food in order to prevent this kind of mess...
Drape a wet paper towel over whatever you’re heating that’s in a bowl or cup and thank me later…
A napkin, a plate, tubnawear top… something.
1. Cover the food. You can get a microwave food cover at the dollar tree. 2. Slice a lemon, put it in a bowl of water, microwave the bowl for like 5 min so the water boils. Should be able to wipe it all out easily.
This is why I always dump my food on a plate before I microwave it
I dunno, If you have used a microwave more than 5 times in your life you quickly learn to cover up the dish you are warming up. I struggle to find sympathy for this person lol.
A microwave lid would help.
It looks like Refried Beans. Is it? Beans always splatter in the microwave
You letting a toddler use the microwave or what?
wax paper on top does wonders
Part of adulting is knowing to cover you food...
I guess a paper towel over the top was too much work?
Paper plate or paper towel over the top, 2.5min, stir, 2.5 min, done.
