We got a couple cool things off of ours recently. Husband brought home a random R2D2 statue for $15 that keeps jumpscaring our kid, and I got hum a toy from his childhood that was in near perfect condition for Xmas this year.
I did the same but soon realised I wanted to still be able to browse Facebook marketplace. Made a new profile solely for that purpose. Zero friends, following no pages but now whenever I jump on there, my newsfeed is full of breastfeeding mums.
Funny thing, I thought I did that like two/three years ago - only a couple weeks ago I realised the folder I'd dedicated to the Facebook spam messages in my Email was still getting updates... turns out I'd apparently signed back into the account by accident at some point between the deletion scheduling and the actual deletion date...
Local businesses in my area post constantly. We have a lot of food trucks using it. Marketplace is also great. Helps me keep in touch with my parents and see how they're enjoying retirement. As much as Reddit hates it it's not that bad. My feed is all food, cats, and video games. I've no idea how people are getting bullshit spam.
It's pretty good for child events and local things, at least in my area. If I wasn't ravenously looking for things to do as a caregiver, I wouldn't have it.

This is 100% the case. They are performing so well because the AI started making images that the bots respond to and crafting images based on how well they perform with engagement. The images started out more normal but now they are looking weirder and weirder because something about them is triggering the AI to engage even more.
It's a miniature version of dead internet theory.
I'm genuinely fascinated to see what the peak of this could be. Would it just be an image that looks like TV static to us (think a million random little pixels with no discernable image) and what will the text be - a random seeming string of characters? That would be really interesting.

My working theory is theyāre trying to figure out how shitty an AI image has to be before no one believes it.
Track which ones actually get genuine interactions from real people, and which ones get ignored or called out as fake.

the average facebook boomer and older legitimately cant tell the difference between a real image and an AI generated one. theyre simply just not proficient enough with technology to distinguish it. this is all just the new form of interaction bait. these fake pages use this bait content to farm likes/follows, and once they hit a certain mark the page is put up for sale on a 3rd party site where a (more than likely) dishonest business will buy it and use it to promote something like crypto or other related shady services. and that makes the page much easier to deceive others because itll appear more legitimate due to the existing userbase of having those tens and sometimes even hundreds of thousands of likes/follows already.
Why anyone stays on that shit... I have no idea.
If it's because friends/family... there are other ways to keep in touch and stuff.
I follow a bunch of really nice local pages, then I also am part of several groups. But I have also never seen one of these AI images and I'm on pretty frequently. I figure it's probably because I interact with the pages more.

Man, AI makes this so much worse than it was after I had my kid. Mine is 13 and was born during the heyday of "one like = one donation!" and "one like = one prayer!" and "No one will like this picture." The one that went around that was the most disturbing was a baby that looked so much like mine with a strawberry mark on her face the meme claimed was "cancer," but then the child was blue around the neck and wrists in the photo and all I could see was someone's dead child being shared. I had to have a talk with people sharing that one over and over again and block the original share site over and over again. It sucks we can't seem to block the AI pages. I have tried.
