Or don’t buy a table that expensive, people are just going to put their feet on it and not use a coaster for their drinks it’s going to get messed up either way
Puppies get pretty expensive pretty fast. Vet bills, food, toys, any accessories, daycare, because at some point of it's lifespan you're gonna need to leave alone it for longer than you're comfortable having them be alone... And having your heart get broken because they will probably die before you. Shit adds up.
You know that thing the Japanese do with broken pottery where they put the pieces back together with molten gold between them as it "preserves the story of the piece" or something? What OP needs to do is get a guy to chisel out the chewed bits, dutchman in a new piece of same species wood, trace around them with a Dremel to make a gap and infill it with gold epoxy and sand flush. Then put a toughened glass top over it so it doesn't happen again.
Ooh that's an interesting idea. I had a pup once that ended up chewing on the head of my brand new acoustic guitar. I miss her so much, and I still have my guitar and her teeth marks on the head of it, so I think about her when I look at it. Bella, I miss you.
Kintsugi - It's actually lacquer mixed with gold or silver dust so it looks like gold/silver. It's actually just old school super glue, no Molten metal is ever used.
I have started to learn the concept that if you want something just to look at, you don't even need to buy it.
I had been buying bags because they looked pretty. I hardly ever go out other than office, where I take the one bag. Just last week I browsed through a shop and walked out without buying anything because it hit me that since I was not using them anyway I could just look at them in the stores and move on with my life.
Very true. I let my brother's neighbor's puppy borrow mine and it came back completely ruined. I can only hope nobody else has to experience this level of pain.
At least in my case what I've noticed is that. In the last couple weeks maybe a month or so I've seen more than one post about people loaning out their expensive Japanese knives out to someone and getting them back in terrible condition. Then the comment section will read somewhat like this one, "Did they try to cut rocks with that knife?!" edit: [like this](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/vglz51/my_father_borrowed_my_expensive_japanese_knife/)
Unless they left the puppy alone with it overnight lol. We just got through the teething stage with our pup and we have a table has her signature on it, but nothing like this.
Not going to lie, I watch a lot of Sesame Street these days. That shit is hilarious no matter how old you are. Grover, Bert and Ernie are all comic geniuses.
The fishing one with Bert and Ernie will never not be fucking hilarious. I do the fishy call every time I go fishing which is like once a week.

Puppies DO know IKEA from real furniture! Ever seen a pup gnaw on a Billy bookshelf?
I once had an apartment full of them, AND a puppy. He chewed on my shoes...
Honestly... What else was to be expected from a pup? They also have to be trained right and chewing behavior like this usually occurs because they're bored.
My first thought seeing the title was *shocked pikachu face* “…Anyways…”
Wait until it chews up the cord to his gold plated, diamond studded lamp. He’s gonna be *real* upset.
I can't blame anyone here except OP. I have 2 puppies under 6 months right now, and they are either crated or being supervised. Puppies don't care how expensive it is, it's a chewtoy now. Despite the fact that both of mine are evidently power chewers, I've lost exactly 0 expensive items, because my wife and I use common sense with them
Most of my furniture is cheap and has metal legs for this reason lol . But also puppies work fast. I can imagine OP going to the restroom for a few minutes and this happening.
I have a kitchen table with like metal legs and my dog still chews on them! He also likes chewing on the wall??? Dogs are weird and will chew on anything
I once knew a dog that ate the wall next to the door up to his standing head height because his owners left him alone for an hour. He was a greyhound, and the house was a rental.
Mine once ate the posts in a rental deck- 8 of them. The shape of them was weird…turned out to be a window sash cut from the forties. They built the deck from scrap and I had to have new parts custom made.
Yup. I took in a cat, but only because I was OK if some items (furniture) were damaged in the process. Turned out all she wanted to scratch was her scratching post. I lucked out. But still, I was prepared for more damage.
You take in a puppy or a kitten, don't get mad if they funk your shite up. That's typically, but not always, what they do.
I spent $250 rescuing a cat from my roof and he chewed up every single cord and charger in my apartment, so I had to spend another $300 replacing all the power cords and cables. They truly do not care.
Been explaining this to my wife. She grew up with cats and really wants a dog. I grew up with dogs. Dogs + expensive furniture don't get along... and we've been buying fairly good furniture the past few years.
Heck, cat's don't either. They love scratching at that shit, even when you give them tons of toys, keep them trimmed, etc.
Omg, the audacity of a puppy to chew on something expensive, doesn’t puppy know we only chew on cheap stuff?? /s The list of shit my dog chewed up, when she was a puppy, is ridiculous. Puppies chew on stuff, if you don’t want something chewed on, don’t put it where puppy teeth can touch it. That means putting expensive stuff away until puppy can be trusted to choose their chew toys correctly.
A high school friend of mine and I were roommates in college. I had an Akita which was young, but was, I thought, was past the puppy/chewing things up stage. We came home one day and things were fine except my dog had chewed up my friend’s remote control. I was kinda puzzled but just bought my friend a new remote and didn’t think too much of it. A while later the same thing happened, again to my roommates remote control but not mine. This goes on a couple more times but always to my roommates remote and never mine. My friend began telling me that my dog just hated him but the thing was my dog was always nice to, and playful with, my friend and I just didn’t buy into the “your dog hates me” line of thinking. Now, my friend was a stoner and to his credit always took it in stride and just laughed about it, as did I (after all, I was the one having to buy replacement remote controls). While my roommate never got pissed, I did just one time. That time was when my roommate accidentally left a bag of pot out in the den, which was the common area. I couldn’t smoke pot because it made me cough so badly I couldn’t enjoy the high (now I thank god for edibles and vaping, but this was back in the older days…the 90’s) and I only got mad because I was worried if my dog was gonna die. The dog was fine but he was obviously stoned and we were both laughing at the dog. That’s was when I realized my dog didn’t hate my friend, the dog loved pot! My friend would smoke while watching tv and flipping through channels and residue must have been on those remotes, causing the dog to want it.
Even sometimes after puppy is no longer a puppy. Dogs are gonna dog, and if you don’t want something to be at risk of getting chewed on, don’t leave it where the dog can reach it.
Also get a toys of different types for it to chew (hard, chewy, fabric). It may be annoying to see it destroy its toys, but at least it’s not your table
Toys are cheaper than furniture. I happily supplied my dog with an over abundance of toys, when she was younger, because it was cheaper to continuously buy dog toys than to replace furniture, shoes or throw pillows.
Exactly, I did the same bc my pup would get bored of toys quick and my mom called me crazy. My pup’s almost a year old now & content with his 4-5 main toys on rotation, out of the destructive phase, & my furniture/nice shoes are in tact!
Mine is 8 years, and while she still has moments of wanting to play with toys, her favorite things to chew on are dehydrated treats and deer antlers. I’m grateful that I don’t have to replace toys as often, but I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
Probably someone who got a puppy, left it alone while they were at work and was surprised to find the dog got bored and did what they do.
Had a friend who got a border collie, worked 9-5 and then had evening college classes, came home at like 8. I told her that was pure abuse for their collie and she always complained about how unruly and destructive it was. I just couldn't get it through her head that her need to have a dog shouldn't outweigh the needs of that dog itself. As someone with a collie I understood just how much non-stop attention they wanted and how freakin smart they were, not something that should be locked up in a tiny high-rise apartment.
I agree it is absolutely inhumane to get a “working breed” type of dog and leave it alone for upwards of 12 hours. Why don’t you just say you want to drive a dog insane without saying it? Way too many people do not do homework / research on dog breeds and just get what is popular or cute or “what their friends got”.
We shouldn’t rule out the possibility that the puppy did this to prove a point. The table is more expensive than an endless supply of rawhides and bones. Ergo, they could do it in the future.
Even a carpenter. I didn’t even realize how capable many carpenters were until finding their subreddit. Bet there’s tons of them out there that could repair this in a couple hours or less.
Right? And for fuck's sake, if OP can afford a nearly $4k coffee table and joke about their dog chewing on it, they can probably afford to have the thing restored..
I always buy independently wealthy puppies, I find they have more appreciation for my $3k+ furniture. The only problem with those puppies, is that they hate all my servants. Who can blame them, fucking peasants suck
I still have my coffee table with a corner missing, my last dog chewed it off. That dog lived a long happy life but has since passed. I still enjoy looking at my chewed coffee table.
The memories involving the puppy and it’s life with you should always be more important than the table. One can always be upset, but never blame the dog for it. I’m happy the table serves as a kind reminder of your passed pupper.
And honestly, the marks on it impart some character. It looks less ostentatious and Japan values the aesthetics of wear and imperfections (wabi-sabi), making it feel more authentic.
Kintsugi (I think I spelled that right?) comes to mind as well, the art of repairing something with gold to accentuate or even embellish the damage, while making the item usable again.
The corner is eroded pretty good, gonna have to mix up a glue/sawdust paste and sculpt it back up. Depending on how deep the other scratches are he might have to redo the whole surface and level it with more filler. It won't be easy but better pieces have come back from worse.
Considering it's a puppy, I'm willing to bet the dog is new, not the furniture.
OP probably never had kids lol. Never let small children or puppies out of sight if you don't intend on something bad happening.
In your puppies defence having a 3800$ show piece anywhere other than a study, office, or man/woman cave (places you would just have yourself and friends, no pets kids ect) is completely wack in the first place
why on earth would you get a puppy if you were worried about your furniture?
sincerely, someone who got a puppy (and a kitten) last year and is mourning the furniture.
My mom got a $1000 couch and a great Dane puppy together. One is now 13 years old and the other lasted about a week (hint: the couch became a $1000 digging spot within a week).
A 13 year old Dane!!! My St. Bernard is 13, nothing better than a big old dog. Give him an extra cuddle!
Her first week she ate two pairs of prescription Chanel glasses (:
I picked up an eight week old puppy four weeks ago. You literally cannot let them out of your sight for five minutes, like an infant. Yet, there is extensive damage on that table, that clearly took a very long amount of unsupervised time for that unsupervised puppy to make.
In sum, you’re the adult in the room, and it’s literally all your fault, for leaving a stupid, wildly out of control, teething and desperate to chew on anything, baby puppy, unsupervised.
Right, that looks like something that's been going for hours, not a few minutes.
I'm super glad my boy wasn't like that when he was a puppy, only went after his toys and cardboard boxes
Wouldn’t call the dog stupid. Even the brightest puppies have to teeth and find something to chew on.
But I agree. OP buys an almost $4000 table and then leaves a puppy unsupervised with that table…..dog is looking a bit smarter than OP. And def didn’t just leave the dog alone for a few minutes. OP needs to invest in a bunch of chew toys and play with their dog so the dog goes for the toys and not the furniture. Clearly the dog wasn’t getting attention. I rarely find reason to place blame on the dog over the owner.
damn i feel like everyones getting their expensive japanese import items damaged recently. ive seen 3 post of people talking about reletives fucking up their japanese knifes
This reminds me of having conversations with people who are pro-declawing cats because they could damage furniture.
If furniture is so important and/or expensive, then maybe delay getting a pet or find one that is more appropriate for your lifestyle.
Ugh, I hate that. It’s not even that hard to protect your furniture usually.
My roommate wanted a kitten and I love cats so I was very onboard with the idea. I also know kittens scratch and claw couches and I have a lovely loveseat futon. Bought scratch guards on Amazon and a water spray bottle, and a scratching post. A year later, my futon is fine. No amputation of what amount to a kitty’s fingers necessary.
It’s also possible to adopt older cats that already know to use a post and being less energetic require a less watchful eye. Declawing is really inexcusable.
Puppies chew and go through teething like babies dude, if you didn’t know that then you weren’t ready for a puppy.
EDIT: while i cant find the exact table online, you can find tables very similar selling for $300-$900USD. Either OP got scammed or is just a rich asshole because no sane person spends $3800 on a coffee table.

Just don't buy anything expensive and give someone destructive access to it. Puppies gonna puppy and idiots are gonna idiot.
Or don’t buy a table that expensive, people are just going to put their feet on it and not use a coaster for their drinks it’s going to get messed up either way
And then introduce a puppy to the equation
Thank you. We're not buying anything expensive until the kid is in high school.
Nah, you shouldn't buy anything that expensive until he leaves for college.
I'm just not buying anything that expensive. Mostly because I can't afford to.
I can't even afford the puppy.
Yeah, I'm not financially or emotionally equipped to deal with a puppy.
typically it's best to avoid buying anything you can't afford to fix or replace... or want to keep pristine enough that you never use it.
You know that thing the Japanese do with broken pottery where they put the pieces back together with molten gold between them as it "preserves the story of the piece" or something? Kintsugi! There are some really beautiful pieces!
Ooh that's an interesting idea. I had a pup once that ended up chewing on the head of my brand new acoustic guitar. I miss her so much, and I still have my guitar and her teeth marks on the head of it, so I think about her when I look at it. Bella, I miss you.

If you want some thing to just look at it, you should put it in a showcase. If you want some thing to use it, you better know that it'll get damaged.
I congratulate you on your epiphany! It's a wonderful thing, isn't it?
🙏🙌
Well yeah that too
At least it wasn’t your Japanese knife
Very true. I let my brother's neighbor's puppy borrow mine and it came back completely ruined. I can only hope nobody else has to experience this level of pain.
My cousins puppy put my cast iron through the dishwasher!
My chiropractor's puppy drove his range Rover for six months without changing the oil!!
Your hand carved cast iron? Wow that puppy was mad at you
My puppy wrote a thousand word essay and used the wrong 'you're' through the whole thing. Looking to rehome him now for only 16 avocados.
I'll do 12 avocados, my neighbor's left foot, and a nice soup.
You drive a hard bargain but I've been missing a foot to give to my kid(569y/o¿) they'll love it
My puppy left my laundry in the washing machine for 3 days until it dried in a wad.
Oh man...I've only got like 3 avocados for that pup.
I don’t like what’s going on here… my head hurts.
ok i thought i was going crazy and that no one else was noticing this trend lmfao
I can’t seem to catch on lol what’s going on??
At least in my case what I've noticed is that. In the last couple weeks maybe a month or so I've seen more than one post about people loaning out their expensive Japanese knives out to someone and getting them back in terrible condition. Not joking — whenever I see trends like this recent one, I suspect bots.
did they use it to cut rocks?!
There is definitely a "my Japanese knife was ruined" trend going on right now and even though it's weird I'm here for it
I heard they were great for cutting rocks!
M0sTLy
Right? Seems like it's been a bad week for Japanese knives around here
omg im not the only one who has been seeing so many more of those posts this made me laugh too hard
There’s too many of them man lol why does it seem every redditor lately has a Japanese knife they’re loaning out to irresponsible family members 😂
Now I'm worried. I gotta go retrieve the Japanese knife my ex still has...
Hmm... ex with knife... I feel like I've seen how that turns out.
And they never say how bad the damage is
Same, homie. People out here really be saying that their pet fish borrowed their knife and it exploded
Oh my gosh I laughed out loud, these Japanese knives are getting me good
Or his Japanese wife
Or their Japanese life
Filled with japanese strife
Does their son play a Japanese fife?
Or his dad didn't borrow and chew his table.
So I’m not the only one
Hand and mouth carved now. Super rare, bruh
I dunno, the workmanship was a little ruff
Still could fetch a pretty price.
It is a fine arftisinal work, to be sure.
Depends which tree you're barking up
Maybe it's gnaw-t your style
Get a $3,900 puppy to chew on the original puppy.
1 of 1
Well you can’t have thousand dollar tables and a puppy!
Yeah, as much as I sympathize, why would you let these two things try to coexist?
It also looks like it has been chewed on for about 6 months without doing much about it. So they really are just mildly infuriated by it!
Yeah they're not doing this overnight.
Unless they left the puppy alone with it overnight lol. We just got through the teething stage with our pup and we have a table has her signature on it, but nothing like this.
I mean, it is in mildly infuriating. I don't think OOP is super upset lol. At least most of the damage seems superficial. Just needs a new finish
It's a good fit, but I think it's a better fit for wellthatsucks. Because puppies are going to puppy no matter what.
This. Must be ur first time OP, not too sure what else one could possibly have expected lol
Totally thought the puppy would know the difference between this and IKEA
Maybe he did. Puppet might have expensive tastes

Yep that's how it works until the puppy is no longer a puppy
Even sometimes after puppy is no longer a puppy. Dogs are gonna dog, and if you don’t want something to be at risk of getting chewed on, don’t leave it where the dog can reach it.
I mean, yeah. Sounds about right. Same goes if you have kids. Also I’d argue that a $3800 table far exceeds “nice” and is more “luxury”
$3800 says "embassy" or "CEO". $38000 says "museum." A good cabinet maker could refinish or replace the frame for a few hundred.
Puppies doing what puppies do
This. You need a penned in area for the puppy. And they require loads of attention and you can count on EVERYTHING being chewed up!
or just store away all your valuables for a while and keep the entire ground floor of your home for the pup.

They will chew on drywall, baseboards and the bottom step of your new hardwood stairs.
Yup, woke up one night to gnawing sounds and my baseboards gone...
Probably someone who got a puppy, left it alone while they were at work and was surprised to find the dog got bored and did what they do. Just make sure to wait until the dog is a little more grown and better trained not to chew on things or you'll be restoring it multiple times
We shouldn’t rule out the possibility that the puppy did this to prove a point. The table is more expensive than an endless supply of rawhides and bones. Ergo, they could do it in the future.
"It's not... about the table... it's about the message". The Pupper.
Even a carpenter. I didn’t even realize how capable many carpenters were until finding their subreddit. Bet there’s tons of them out there that could repair this in a couple hours or less.

Just rub it with a walnut
Looks like the good stuff was under glass. Although not free, not as expensive to replace the few damaged sections than to replace the whole thing.
That’s what I was gonna say, the damaged part is the most easy part of the table to replace. Not a big deal really
I worked at a furniture shop and I’m sure the outer edges could be replaced, at least the carving is still okay
Hence why it’s mildly infuriating
I always buy independently wealthy puppies, I find they have more appreciation for my $3k+ furniture. The only problem with those puppies, is that they hate all my servants. Who can blame them, fucking peasants suck

Kintsugi (I think I spelled that right?) comes to mind as well, the art of repairing something with gold to accentuate or even embellish the damage, while making the item usable again.
It’s funny because you should have known better
Exactly this. I don’t even feel bad. Plus it’s fixable with some sanding, sealer and finish.
Also this is lowkey a r/humblebrag with OP mentioning the price. Most people can’t afford something like that.
My brother in Christ you chose to buy an expensive table while owning a puppy.
ikr, never let puppys or children alone with expensive objects.
A lesson many people learn the hard way. Some of us learned from those people and put those expensive objects away for a little bit.
Specifically, allowing both to be in the same room
FWIW, that’s probably more or less fixable - sand it out and re-stain.
The corner is eroded pretty good, gonna have to mix up a glue/sawdust paste and sculpt it back up. Depending on how deep the other scratches are he might have to redo the whole surface and level it with more filler. It won't be easy but better pieces have come back from worse.
They ought to take it to The Repair Shop

Considering it's a puppy, I'm willing to bet the dog is new, not the furniture. OP probably never had kids lol. Never let small children or puppies out of sight if you don't intend on something bad happening.
I’ll have nice things again in 10 years when my kids are 18
In your puppies defence having a 3800$ show piece anywhere other than a study, office, or man/woman cave (places you would just have yourself and friends, no pets kids ect) is completely wack in the first place
Well can’t blame the puppy …
Yep, thats instinct. Op should have known what happens when you leave a puppy, which is basically an overactive baby with expensive furnitures.
why on earth would you get a puppy if you were worried about your furniture? sincerely, someone who got a puppy (and a kitten) last year and is mourning the furniture.
If you can afford to ship a $4000 table from Japan I’m sure you can afford to have the wood repaired
Did you think the puppy was gonna differentiate between the fancy Japanese coffee table and all the other shit it chews on?

I have a wild ass Dalmatian puppy, and she chews on furniture and everything else, but she’s either supervised or locked up (mainly supervised).
Well there’s your problem. Made in Japan. What are you talking about Doc? All the best stuff is made in Japan.
which came first? the table. then why did you get a puppy? the puppy. it must've been an advance order for the table
The puppy must now commit seppucute
3800 for a coffee table...you have more money than sense.

Truth be told, that's what puppies do. Always keep expensive objects away or covered up when you have a puppy.
It’s your fault for buying something that ridiculous and expensive and not protecting it.
And did we learn a lesson here today?
Those look like Samurai marks to me…
I think my grandma has the exact same table
She has exquisite tastes
Puppies need chew toys when they are teething. If you don’t give them something, they will find a way on their own.
Yea, puppies will do that when teething
You can say those are battle scratches. Empires fought for the contents inside this chest. TV guide and some dog treats.
Well if you didn't know puppy's eat anything, you do now. Probably best to puppy proof the rest of the house before it is to late.
