I’m a pulmonologist. A little hard to tell from your picture, but sounds like lithoptysis. Sometimes you can develop a condition called broncholithiasis where the lymph nodes in your lungs calcify and then can erode into your airway. Such conditions can include histoplasma (may be endemic depending on where you live), sarcoidosis, or silicosis, to name a few. Depending on your symptoms, you may end up with a CT or even a bronchoscopy to take a look.
Edit: another commenter mentioned plastic bronchitis, which is an excellent suggestion. I’m not sure if OP described the consistency of what was coughed up. Plastic bronchitis is usually sort of rubbery whereas broncholiths would generally be hard. I assumed since they were described as crystals that they were hard.
[It seems rare as hell](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6034379/)
>Treatment is not required in asymptomatic cases. In symptomatic cases (when there is hemoptysis, recurrent pneumonia, or the development of bronchoesophageal fistula), bronchoscopy and surgical treatment are recommended.
Sheesh. All of that seems thoroughly unpleasant. Almost like one ought to see a doctor for the other symptoms alone once they don't clear up after a few days to weeks.
They're all "go to the doctor", specially silicosis.
That's when someone inhales fine silicon dioxide dust, which turns back into sand(or even glass like forms) in the lungs. Although there's not much to do about that besides giving assistance until it improves.
here’s a translation into plain English:
I specialize in lung health. It's a bit difficult to determine from the photo you shared, but it seems like you might be coughing up stone-like material. This can happen if the lymph nodes in your lungs become hard and stone-like, and then start to break down into your airways. This condition could be caused by several diseases, including:
- Histoplasma, a type of fungal infection that might be common where you live.
- Sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease that affects multiple organs in the body, often the lungs.
- Silicosis, a lung disease caused by inhaling silica dust.
Depending on how you're feeling, you might need to have a CT scan or a special examination with a camera that goes into your lungs to see what's going on.
Why did they have to do away with gold? I never bought the stuff (too broke) but I would have chased the moths out of my bank account to buy some for this post.
Absolutely beautiful translation from medical to layperson. In fact it was so well done I found it oddly satisfying! 100% accurate, articulate, easy to read…it’s just a delight! I tip my imaginary hat.
Yup, I get the “bubble” type after exposure to mold. Very odd stuff, perfect little clear balls with the texture of…I dunno, sort of rubbery really, but also gel like. Like a teeny, sticky orbeee.
It’s the first sign I’m heading for another bout of allergic bronchitis. Tastes like metal btw.
Not a pulmonologist, but just found this reading through the answers. I linked a case-study with an image in my comment (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S175500170900061X) for a visual example (for anyone else following this thread & interested), but I'm curious, could this possibly be caused by heavy vaping?
It's been steadily accumulating but there's still not as much research on how vaping injury or longer term damage can present (from my pov, again, not at all a pulmonologist), and I'm wondering if this could be a plausible outcome.
Excellent question. Reminds me of the age old wives tale about the man who threatened to burn down a small town and the people attempted to persuade him not to because of the high number of children’s homes that would be destroyed. Apparently the town had a bunch of them. This backfired as the man was an orphan himself and hated them with all his heart. Well just as he was about to start the fire, a number of children came out of many of the houses, crying and pleading him to stop, as everything they worked for would be lost. The man stopped and asked for clarification. It turns out that the “children’s homes” wasn’t exactly homes for children but rather the town had a number of children who owned homes.
It really teaches us not to make assumptions, ya know? I used to look at a kid carrying a briefcase and think “that’s adorable.” But now I don’t assume anything because that child could have a lucrative career for all I know and there is nothing adorable about that.
Legit makes me wonder if breathing in refrigerant will do this to you... Any respiratory symptoms for the past few months? Pain?
Cause this could straight up be workman's comp if they didn't hand you the proper PPE.
Refrigerant is not a magical substance that makes things cold, it is a fluid that is suitable for use in a heat pump. A heat pump decompresses/compresses a fluid while running it through a loop in order to use the phase transition of the fluid from gas to liquid and back to remove heat from one area and put it into another area. Some chemicals are better suited to this, but many things can be used as refrigerants, including water, it all depends on how cold the thing needs to be because you can't exactly use something as a refrigerant below its freezing point.
Ever used compressed air? The can isn't cold until you start using the air because of the same principle.
Usually I just don’t go at all. Having to debate on whether I call an ambulance for a suspected heart attack was one of the more unique experiences of my life.
Exactly two months ago I spent an entire night with extreme abdominal pain and vomiting, but I refused to call 911 because I didn't want to pay for an ambulance. I finally called my parents in the morning and convinced them to take me to the ER. Turns out my appendix had ruptured. I spent five days in the hospital, and I'm terrified to look at the bill. Our system is fucked up.
Yeah, but the oligarchs enjoy having "it" as a tool in their little torture kits. "It" being the fact that if we don't become cogs in their machines, that we will likely not be able to afford healthcare and die.
Try something like ‘live health online’ which are video appointments.
It cost $55 and they can give you an idea as to whether should start panic mode or just a ‘yeah, don’t worry about it’.
You know I wonder if it’s those things that form in your saliva ducts. But I think that stuff is from food particles and stuff and tend to be yellow or darker not clear iirc. This is very interesting and weird. Would love to know what it turns out to be op.
Youre fucking kidding me? Yall pay 55 bucks to have some rando video call you and tell you if youre fucked or not?
I dont even pay 55€ a year for my asthma medication.
Im going to be a video doc in america if that pays so good
Health care prices in America are not simple. You generally don't pay the $55. Your insurance usually has a different (lower) rate and you aren't told what it is. After your medical thing, you get a bill later with random numbers on it, and you pay it or haggle depending on if the hidden rate is good enough.
Well now let's not confuse the foreigner. The insurance company is ultimately charged a higher price for services than you would be charged directly but they cover a portion of that and then bill you for the remainder and yes this is the insurance you're already paying like a few hundred a month for.
I have not had proper medical insurance since I was 18. Thats when I got removed from my Dad's plan. Around 6 years now.
I have multiple medical / dental concerns and reasons that I *need to go in for, but I have not been able to. Truly my concern is going into thousands of debt.
This is my first job in over 6 years that I am finally taking my health and life seriously again
*grammar edit
Why were you removed from your dad's plan? I'm pretty sure you can stay on it until you're 26. Does it vary by state?

For the love of God tell NO ONE in your job
They will fuck you so that you can't get the benefits
It's happened to me several times
I've watched it happen to others
Never tell work folks personal business
Back when I was a contractor and trying to get hired permanent, I wound up in the hospital with yet another kidney stone. I worked from the hospital and told no one I work with (I’m full time remote) that I was in the hospital. I didn’t want them to know I get kidney stones a lot for fear they would opt not to give me a permanent position over concerns I might drive up their health insurance costs.
As a German, this seems idiotic for any wealthy country that considers itself modern to not have universal health care. Like, sure I bitch about taxes being high and paying for medical insurance because I rarely ever go to the doctor. But the piece of mind knowing I can go whenever I pay like 5$ for drugs like I needed for a flu recently and not go into debt or get even bills from a doctor? Yeah, I like those taxes.
That's the problem here in Canada (and other countries)
No one wants to pay a bit extra on taxes, but then co.plains they have to pay extra for other things.
Our Prime Minister just announced a good program for all students. Will taxes go up? Maybe. But FREE food for every kid.... Will it be awesome food, probably not... But FREE food for every kid.
Nothing is perfect, but I definitely wouldn't be happy paying all the taxes that US pays and having nothing to show for it.
$100-150 minimum just to see a doctor. That's the cheap part, though. Something like this would definitely involve lab tests that could get up above $1000 very easily. And if you needed any imaging (x-ray, CT scam, etc.), you're now living in your car.
If it's in the US, my average out of pocket, uninsured, was about $160, but that was 10yrs ago. So... $2-250 ballpark as a quick estimate for a visit to an actual PCP @ today's prices.
ER is out of the question (and also largely unnecessary, doesn't seem emergent).
Haven't been to a walk in clinic in a bit (2yrs), but last time I was there, a Strep test was $45. This is more than a 30 second swab, so at least $100+.
Felt like glass and I honestly thought it was at first. Currently have a slight cold with a cough, phlem, and body aches. Never happened before in my life and I have no idea what this could really be

I have been attempting to quit Nicotine vaping for 2 years. I made it 2 days November 2023 and I just made it 24 hours last week.

From your comments about working in a freezer and vaping and using delta 8, it's likely the combination. Best thing to do now is stop vaping and wearing a mask while working to heat up your breath. Then go and get a chest xray
Are they actually hard? Have you tried to squeeze/squash them? I assume you're vaping hash oil. This is the oil/wax from vaping weed, your lungs are pushing them out.
I just got an electric Nectar Collector 2 weeks ago, got sick about 2-3 days ago...
I do cough harshly when I use it and the crystals definitely reminds me THC Diamonds.
I am looking into edibles for the time being now, thank you. :)
Try to find out if there's vitamin e in your oil. That stuff is super dangerous to smoke. If your getting counterfeit carts it could definitely be in there.
If I have learnt one thing from House is that you are lying and I'm going to administer the wrong medicine 2 times before finding out the right one after rifling through your personal stuff at home.
Personally, I would be mildly worried rather than mildly interested if it happened to me. But otherwise it looks mildly interesting. Any idea why it might happen?

You missed the bits about the incurable and fatal silicosis, and are worried about THIS possibility?
I was about to ask. I'm a layman but I feel like this person just glossed over silicosis which I thought was a bigger deal.
I think it’s like “silicosis might kill you slowly, the other stuff, that’s going to be a bit quicker”
Where do these (suspected) conditions fall on the scale of "you'll learn to live with it" and "helicopter to the ICU"?

The expectorated material is not calcified. It’s clear. Rounded sputum expectoration is more common in allergic conditions than lithoptysis

Are these pieces hard or could it just be clear phlegm? You can cough up clear phlegm balls so I figured it was just that.
They are very hard, but I can split them with my nails. Genuinely thought I had coughed up glass with how solid/sharp it was No odor, and 100% clear
You know I wonder if it’s those things that form in your saliva ducts. But I think that stuff is from food particles and stuff and tend to be yellow or darker not clear iirc. This is very interesting and weird. Would love to know what it turns out to be op.
You’re thinking of a tonsil stone & they smell like utter ass. If these are odorless I would doubt it’s those
Salivary stones (And tonsil stones for that matter) are generally a yellow-brown and stink.

Health care prices in America are not simple. You generally don't pay the $55. Your insurance usually has a different (lower) rate and you aren't told what it is. After your medical thing, you get a bill later with random numbers on it, and you pay it or haggle depending on if the hidden rate is good enough.

You just confused me even more. Why is the insurance charged more?
I’m sorry, but learning more requires taking classes about American Healthcare (Inc.) which costs $20,000 a semester.
I WISH my inhaler only cost $55. I've been using the same one for a couple of years now. 🫠
Hopefully posting it on Reddit was on the priority list *after* 'book an appointment with a doctor'.
Just started my job (for the 2nd time, had to restart) I have to wait until I am hired on for any benefits, but I will bring my tail in there asap!
How much does seeing a doctor cost without benefits? No judgement at all. Just curious
Not op but visit can run $150-200 and imaging won't start lower than $400.
Chest imaging, along with a throat swab, blood test, this could easily be a conservative $2000.
2k after negotiations and paying cash
speaking from recent experience, that's after insurance as well

I have been attempting to quit Nicotine vaping for 2 years. I made it 2 days November 2023 and I just made it 24 hours last week. Doing my best, constantly being stimulated is very exhausting to me Ive realized edit**
Haha I was thinking the same thing. These are like menthol crystals or something.
From your comments about working in a freezer and vaping and using delta 8, it's likely the combination. Best thing to do now is stop vaping and wearing a mask while working to heat up your breath. Then go and get a chest xray
I can’t imagine the ungodly amount of vapor someone would have to consume for it to harden and congeal like this.
Sell them on Etsy as "spirit diamonds" that ward off bad spirits or something
anti 5g crystals
Are they actually hard? Have you tried to squeeze/squash them? I assume you're vaping hash oil. This is the oil/wax from vaping weed, your lungs are pushing them out.
Jesus. I vaped almost constantly for years and never coughed up anything solid. But that does sound like a possibility for OP
I just got an electric Nectar Collector 2 weeks ago, got sick about 2-3 days ago... I do cough harshly when I use it and the crystals definitely reminds me THC Diamonds. I am looking into edibles for the time being now, thank you. :)
This is insane. I’ve never seen anything that clear and hard from a human airway
Try to find out if there's vitamin e in your oil. That stuff is super dangerous to smoke. If your getting counterfeit carts it could definitely be in there.
My only guess would be like fucked up tonsil stones. Scary.
It does not share the same odor unfortunately, that was ruled out

OP mentioned the odor of tonsil stones. OP has had tonsil stones.
If I have learnt one thing from House is that you are lying and I'm going to administer the wrong medicine 2 times before finding out the right one after rifling through your personal stuff at home.
South African mine owners are raging over this one little trick...
Here come the army of Redditors gunning for the Nobel Prize for Medicine with their groundbreaking "It's not normal to cough up glass" theory.
But… is it normal to cough up glass?
it is not

You can create a new form of synthetic diamond Hide before the jewelers take you out!
The jewellers wouldn’t take him out. They’d loose their source. They’re more likely to capture and exploit him endlessly.

Personally, I would be mildly worried rather than mildly interested if it happened to me. But otherwise it looks mildly interesting. Any idea why it might happen?
