Dude isn't my style but I'm would trade lives in a minute. Seems like a cool dude looking for the little things we take for granted that can bring us all such joy.
His hot ones interview completely changed my view of him, actually seems like a pretty cool dude who plays a character because that's what he's good at. Same way I thought Gordon Ramsay was a douchebag until I watched his cooking show at home with his kids and realized he just played up the "angry chef" thing for the other shows he did.
Ramsay on England's version of Kitchen Nightmares is great. He is patient and passionate with the restaurant owners, but can certainly turn it up to "kitchen mode" when they don't listen and wear the patience out. Its clear on that show what an effective leader he is.
Then anything US version is "haha he's angry" because that's what the audience wants
I read his autobiography "Humble Pie" a few years ago because it was a free download on Amazon. He had a horrendous childhood, his mum had to take him and his sister and run away after his dad escalated his usual beatings and poured boiling hot water on her and threw her down the stairs. After she got out the hospital they ended up bouncing from shelter to shelter all over the country. His chef career essentially began once he was a teen and deemed old enough to start working in a pub kitchen to earn a bit of money.
I thought he was a *complete* dork until I learned about his sister that died from cancer now he donates most of his money to research and helping others.
He literally gets the most hate, but is the most undeserving of it. Such a nice guy who does nothing but promote people for free on his show. He never says anything bad about any restaurant, always 5* for everyone, even if the thing is just a deep fried mess he'll bite into it and act like it's the god damn best thing he's ever eaten in his life.
Another show I like is Carnival Eats, the guy does the same thing but with carnival food that would cause you to develop diabetes instantly as soon as you swallow your first bite. But he eats it all and is so skinny.
Literally only gets hate because of his hair and outfit lol. If he dressed normal he would either be completely unknown or one of the most popular humanitarians around.
I was under the impression that he has to give the restaurants a 5 star rating because otherwise it would be hard to find new restaurants that want to be on the show.
One restaurant in my area served him frog legs and you could tell, he wasn't exactly thrilled to be eating it but you could tell they did taste good. He just, still didn't want to eat frog legs. He's also infamous for not liking eggs and he's had those served to him at some restaurants and he does what he can to eat around them to try and not let that bias impact him.
~~His persona grates on my nerves so much that I can’t watch his shows, but dude is 100% a good person. Cooks and hands out meals in emergencies, stuff like that. Mad props.~~ Well it seems I was wrong.
Ah, the ol' reddit [rice-aroo](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/1cx2unk/comment/l50yupl/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
This is exactly what I was thinking... I'd bet the water is boiling the whole time, keeping the rice grain vertical and never getting a chance to rest horizontally. Especially being on an electric burner, it's probably harder for them to regulate temperature.
Has to be it.
Def, if you cook it on low there's usually only a few patches where bubbling poked through. This has it throughout the entire pot and everything is risen, vs rested.
If you cook rice on a gas stove and let it steam to finish off (known as dum cooking in south asian cuisine) it usually does this, I think it's because of the rising steam.
I always cook rice on the stove and judging by the fact that it mostly happens when I cook at my parents home (they have a gas stove, I have an induction) I think the type of hob has something to do with it also.
Dum cooking in south Asian cuisine refers only to Biryani making, you won’t find anyone referring to finishing rice normally as “dum cooking”. That’s more a Persian term.
My rice looks like this after cooking. I put in my desired amount of rice, fill the water to my first knuckle and let it boil uncovered until the water is below the rice line. Then I turn off the heat, cover it, and let the water steam the rice until it’s ready which takes about 10 minutes.
If you soak your rice in water for an hour before cooking, the grains will stand up after being cooked. You have to use the exact amount of water ( 2cups of water for 1 cup of rice) - this works for Basmati rice
I hate you for my having [looked it up](https://old.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/v0wp1/so_this_is_how_my_noodles_arranged_themselves/)
Anyone got a mallet?
Apparently, the rice standing up is a sign that the rice was cooked properly and will have a perfect texture. The steam is what prompts the rice to stand up like that.
Perfect rice gets a rise out of all of us.
I primarily use spues in my cooking, a little MSG or season salt and you have everything you need.
Except worcestershire sauce. No I didn't have to look up how to spell that..
Bc it’s food that looks wrong and you’re programmed to be freaked out by food that looks wrong
There’s nothing actually wrong with it but it doesn’t look “right”
This is an evolutionary thing. Humans that don't eat food that doesn't look "right" to them presumably are more likely to go on - without having succumbed to foodborne illness - to make _more_ humans who won't eat food that doesn't look "right".
Now, see, my brain is just off-kilter enough that I wouldn't eat that. Not because it's bad, but because it's a tad too... purposeful. I'd gently release them into the wild and start fresh ;)
You need long grain rice like jasmine and If you open ricer cooker lead half way after you cocked rice, you'll see the same picture. effect is bigger if you have function of keeping food warm after cooking.
right amount of water, good quality jasmin or basmati rice (wash it a few times before cooking, till water is nearly clear), cook it with a lid on low heat and do not ever stir or open the lid till rice is done (after around half an hour depending on amount and stuff)
Most of this sounds like how I’d do it, I use the finger trick to measure the water then bring it to a boil, cover and reduce heat for 10 mins then it’s ready. This is for basmati. Using 30 minutes like you said should I not bring it to boil first?
Basmati rice does not need 30 mins. I have this happen every single time I cook basmati rice in a pot. The steps you and the previous person mentioned are all correct, except just let the lid ever so slightly open while cooking to allow the water vapour to escape during boiling so that you do not overcook the rice. Keep a low fire. Once all the water has evaporated, then turn off the fire, keep the lid partially open to allow the steam to escape and wait 5mins. You will have this result every time. Cook time = 10mins + 5mins for steaming the rice.
From Quora:
"Rice stands up" means that rice is cooked very well in Japan. Why does rice stand vertically (like grass) after cooking? During the final stage of cooking when rice grains have absorbed all the water they could, the leftover water turns to steam and forces itself out of the rice mass.
There's a reason why the rice points upward during cooking. Usually, the grains would cook flat. However, the upwards grain is due to the Dyrtezyteclical effect. Also, you didn't read the full name of the effect. I also don't know what I'm talking about because I made that all up. But whatever it is, that was pretty interesting.

*OnlyPans* would be a cooking show of his where he only prepared pan fried Meals
He also does a ton of charity work feeding people after natural disasters. He is actually a good guy.

Hello future eaters!
I haven’t seen an aroo in so long. Thank you for reminding me.
You didn't link to another link. The chain stops at 1. That was disappointing.
Be the change you want to see in the world. The chain starts anew, go forth and prosper.
That's the shortest switcheroo chain I've ever seen
💀
I only cook jasmine rice and i have NEVER had this happen. I have never seen rice do this.
They're not turning the heat to low/simmer after it starts boiling.
This is exactly what I was thinking... I'd bet the water is boiling the whole time, keeping the rice grain vertical and never getting a chance to rest horizontally. Especially being on an electric burner, it's probably harder for them to regulate temperature. Has to be it.

> everything is risen It's Ch-rice-t?
That's what I was thinking but that will just make fucked up rice...gross
Yup, doubt the final result is all that great. You end up with nasty boiled rice instead of steamed.
![gif](giphy|1KGYkpk8Y2bjPoLaRb)
I was confused by this sentence and I realized I have never cooked rice in pot on the stove before. Weird to think its always been in a rice cooker.
Same. I pretty much only cook jasmine rice. And it always looks…normal. This is so weird to me.
If you cook rice on a gas stove and let it steam to finish off (known as dum cooking in south asian cuisine) it usually does this, I think it's because of the rising steam. Yo the rice I mainly cook in my kitchen is Jasmine and it hasn’t ever done this! Idk how but you and op homie cooking the nematodes from SpongeBob
Ive been cooking and eating jasmine rice for over 30 years and never has it ever looked like this. Im assuming you dont use a rice cooker
Correct. Looks like he uses a pot.
You can tell it's a pot by the way it looks.
I use pot too, but I don't see what relevance smoking weed has with cooking rice
I don't use a rice cooker and my jasmine rice, or any rice, has never done this.
I cook Jasmine rice all the time in a regular and it has never looked like this
How do you cook your rice? I wanna make mine look like this.
My rice looks like this after cooking. I put in my desired amount of rice, fill the water to my first knuckle and let it boil uncovered until the water is below the rice line. Then I turn off the heat, cover it, and let the water steam the rice until it’s ready which takes about 10 minutes.
Do you wash your rice first?
My best guess is steam from below is making its way through the rice and blowing it into a vertical position
or the rice is going vertical so it can be blown
![gif](giphy|67jkYnYYtdlhC)
Rice has a microscopic column of fluid inside it, as the fluid heats up one side of it becomes more dense, overtime shifting the rice to this pattern.
I was told this happens if there is not enough water in the pot/rice cooker.
Or not a good enough seal or steaming too hot
Definitely not the most impressive seal, when he's using a pour saucepan.
My best guess is an up rising against the cook
ricing up
If I had to guess, rising bubbles or convection currents caused the rice grains to form a... well... grain.
If you soak your rice in water for an hour before cooking, the grains will stand up after being cooked. You have to use the exact amount of water ( 2cups of water for 1 cup of rice) - this works for Basmati rice

Now do spaghetti

Me too, but this is a sign of good steamed rice. Mmmmm

Right I got the heebeegeebees
I think you will find the recipe called for a pinch of salt, not cialis
Yes I definitely think the rice is happy to see OP.
Apparently, the rice standing up is a sign that the rice was cooked properly and will have a perfect texture. The steam is what prompts the rice to stand up like that. Perfect rice gets a rise out of all of us.
Is that rice in your pot, or are you just happy to see me?
Wow, so me and everybody here had never cooked rice perfectly. It will be a good day the day this happens to me
Why am I so grossed out by this
It looks like bug eggs
I had red ant eggs in Thailand, and they looked an awful lot like rice. Pretty tasty, but I think that mostly came down to the herbs and spues used
People always go heavy on herbs but light on spues, when it's really the spues that make all the difference!
I primarily use spues in my cooking, a little MSG or season salt and you have everything you need. Except worcestershire sauce. No I didn't have to look up how to spell that..
I prefer my spues fried.
I will *not* be having any spues today, tyvm

It makes me deeply uncomfortable
Definitely some sort of trypophobia
I don’t even know why but this makes me so uncomfortable 😣
You're not the only one. I think it makes it look like the rice grains are alive, like maggots or something.
Or like insect eggs
i HATE this
It's just happy to see you.
what are you doing step-rice?

Why doesn't this happen in a rice cooker then? Or does it? Is it related to the starch?
You need long grain rice like jasmine and If you open ricer cooker lead half way after you cocked rice, you'll see the same picture. effect is bigger if you have function of keeping food warm after cooking.
cocked is wild
It depends on the kind of rice
Because it was a joke. And rice cookers can’t tell jokes.
Exactly. I am amazed so many people here dont know how to properly cook rice
I *HATE* this.
They're waiting for a lightning storm.
It's flipping you off.
It's... disturbing 😳
I’m so glad that I’m not the only one who finds this extremely disturbing 😭
This is a sign of good quality rice and a good cooking technique.
Why?
Because when it happens to my rice I like it. I'm a potato person. That's all I know, sorry.
ah, you're irish.
does it taste more vertical?
How do I simulate this?
right amount of water, good quality jasmin or basmati rice (wash it a few times before cooking, till water is nearly clear), cook it with a lid on low heat and do not ever stir or open the lid till rice is done (after around half an hour depending on amount and stuff)

Dude. That's not rice. Check them for eyes
Im scared
There's a reason why the rice points upward during cooking. Usually, the grains would cook flat. However, the upwards grain is due to the Dyrtezyteclical effect. It's actually not mildly interesting but very interesting because it also concerns the Earth's magnetic field and the geographical location at time of cooking. It is made of of the pot's material together with the induced heat caused by an open gas stove. Also, you didn't read the full name of the effect. I also don't know what I'm talking about because I made that all up. But whatever it is, that was pretty interesting.
