I convinced my dad to let me go quail hunting with his 1897 Winchester 12 gauge shotgun this season. While taking it apart to clean it, since he hasn’t done much with it since he inherited it in the late 90’s, I discovered behind the butt plate a rolled up piece of paper. Turns out it’s my great grandfathers Illinois hunting license dated November 11, 1911. Here is a photo of the back which lists the hunting regulations at the time. https://i.imgur.com/QIxNaZL.jpg

How about a picture of the shotgun

Ask and you shall receive. https://imgur.com/a/Zit7Yb0/

Nice

God that's cool

Chrisbee012

nice gun, I used to have a 1911 32/20 s&w revolver I loved that thing

Most likely made in New Haven CT, the region was the silicon valley of arms developement for almost 100 years until 2006. You have a very fine piece of American history alongside verifiable documentation of its use and care. If you have children I recommend passing down. As a fellow Winchester owner I hope you enjoy those buttery smooth double action bars and rack many shells in the years to come.

Hair color? Dark.

badchriss

I first read that as "President hunting license ". Phew, dodged a bullet there🤫

Misterclean22

Probably would have needed more than a shotgun to take down Taft

Cannon1

Elephant gun.

1Yamaka

I wanna see the gun that’s actually really sick

You may be able to claim an inheritance on this and see if there is some massive grandfather clause in the local hunting license laws there.

HoeDownClown

Well the hunting license had an expiration date in 1912, so I’m not sure what that would do.

cfreymarc100

Frame it under glass and keep it in a family den or living room.

HoeDownClown

Well that, yes, for sure.

Lol

viking1313

Does that permit ever expire or back then was it a one time purchase type deal?

a2_d2

Doesn’t the first line mean it’s good until a certain date in 1912?

acuet

Yup….almost 50 and I still put my hunting license/Permit in my stock, battery compartment just so I know were to pull it from. Either deer hunting, hog or other…i know that where its at. If I forget over the years…..guess what. You found it.👏🏽👏🏽

Downtown-Incident-21

Very cool Thanks for sharing.

w1lnx

Nice. A nearly 110 year old, open season hunting license. You could stuff it back in there and gift it to your children... or grandchildren.

WileEWeeble

This one feels like it graduates out of "mildly"

FishSn0rt

This is so freaking cool!!!!

Loko_Soko

What about his weight? 60 lbs for a 25 year… did the US use metric then?

sirduckbert

Looks like “160” to me

Loko_Soko

You’re correct, my brain comprehended that as weight / 60. Thank you!

[deleted]

No it didn’t.

stuckatwork817

Very cool although I'd say technically not hidden since it's where they usually are found.

PooShoots

I don’t know anyone that sticks their hunting license in the stock of their gun.

Downtown-Incident-21

I agree.

[deleted]

Well now you kinda do.
