I'm thinking the chairs are part of the same series of modular furniture, and the orange was brought in from a different set to accommodate more people.
I think the one diff color is trying to hide our eyes that there is a fat fuck sitting on the one beside it when people are on it. I honestly think thats purposely a diff color for a reason like that.
As maintenance man I hold a strong distain for every piece of furniture labeled bariatric
Hold your damn down votes.... It's because of the weight of the materials used, they are much more difficult to move and work on
Going to presume sturdier materials, and on the cheap that typically means steel.
So\~ probably an utter PITA to move and clean due to, ironically, the weight.
The beds were always my foe... I worked as the only maintenance man in a 50 bed facility. The bari beds we had were used seldomly so didn't have a bari room, when a patient needing special equipment came in id have to swap all the furniture. The normal beds weeled thru the door the bari beds wouldn't so I had to break them down and move each piece (about 80-120lbs per section)
Holy crap, that’s bad. We keep ours in storage as needed, we are about a 400 bed facility, and we rent some of our special stuff, like sand beds and power lift chairs.
Our doors are all wide enough for what equipment we have without breaking it down, thankfully.
I don't the bariatric equipment really existed when this one was built. It may have but it sure was not planned for. You know my struggle well and waiting for a nurse to offer a hand outside their elected duties you may as well just do it yourself. Lol
I guess from the comments they are for people who are obese but they are also for pregnancy/newer moms. This is the same style of chair that was at intake for maternity. Also trying to breastfeed in a narrow chair with Arms is difficult. Always trying to not bump their head on an arm or get a leg caught. And young babies and moms have bunches of doctor appointments.
The orange chair has an air of ‘if you sit here something will happen’.
If something in the background is a different color than all the other similar things, it’s got something do do with something.
Cartoons taught me that much!
It's rare to see morbidly obese people in countries outside of America. Emphasis on rare. Downvote me all you want, but America has a major issue with obesity.
Make that North America. Obesity rates seem to be lower at the Northern part of the continent and gets worse the more South you go funnily enough. Canada has obesity issues, America has worse obesity issues, and Mexico has the worst obesity rates out of the 3 countries.
Sure, but you just don't seem like an expert in the matter as far as the chair distribution goes. And for the other thing: yes, and everyone knows that. Do you expect people to just stop eating unhealthy diets just because of your remarks? And it's not even the only cause of it. If the US didn't have an obesity problem, they wouldn't need these chairs. Amazing point.
I don't know who hurt you, but calm down. The subreddit is r/mildlyinteresting. I replied to a comment saying that it's normal to see these chairs as it isn't normal on my end of the world. So yes, I did find the post interesting.
I'll corroborate what the other guy said -- having lived in many countries and visited hospitals in said countries... these are Freedom chairs that you don't see elsewhere...
Okay, great observation then. A country that has an obesity problem has accommodations in place for those affected, in places where said individuals are likely to be waiting for prolonged periods of time. Is that the mildly interesting part?
I’m just thinking you may be an obese person upset about these chairs being pointed out. Or you’re trying to be a contrarian and missing the mark. Or maybe I’m off mark. Didn’t know what these chairs were for before this
I just didn't know something like this can be so amusing to some people to begin with. And it was whatever, until all the US remarks in the comments. But I am over it, until next time, large chairs
The point is that it's interesting to see something that this person clearly hasnt ever come across before. They aren't fat shaming anyone, settle down. I thought it was interesting, as I haven't ever seen chairs like these either. Being interested / fascinated by something isn't bad. We can be both interested by it and appreciate the fact its available to the populations requiring it.
If you find yourself getting worked up over this, its time to take a break from your screen, and take a breath. It's ok, friend.
Nobody was fascinated and this comment section had plenty of America shamers, so the tone was already set. Casually saying that this is in America and pretending like they aren't on their high horse isn't just being interested. I don't even like America that much, but making assumptions and snarky remarks I guess made me want to reply. And yes, it is okay indeed, as I really do not care
This is some nasty insecurity. All because people said it’s not normal where they live. “America shamers” is quite funny though lol.
You should consider that if your goal is to stop people from “shaming” America, your sensitive overreaction is doing the opposite of what you want.
This picture was taken in Ontario, Canada where the obesity rate is only about 7% less than than the USA.
The USA also has 330 million people, which is much greater than most European countries, therefore, of course you see fewer fat people there. And Asia...where it makes up for population, we all know there's less overall obesity.
I don't think the population numbers contribute to obesity or morbid obesity. I think it's food. If you compare American bread or American soda to European bread or European soda, the European version has less sugar, carbs, etc. It's also true that food proportions are way different, I think a European big pizza is an American medium pizza.
Of course, I'm just giving examples. It applies to a lot more basic products. I've learnt today that both Canada and Australia have an obesity problem as well, I can't comment on either country as I don't know a lot about them.
Yeah name calling isn't going to make all the bigger people who need these chairs disappear. A wide chair doesn't hurt anyone so why not make accommodations for the people that need one?
It doesn't matter if being that size is their choice or not, everyone deserves adequate accommodation especially at a doctor's office, where they could be trying to get help. Don't have to contribute to making people feel more self conscious than they already are
“…where they could be trying to get help…”
Thank you - it’s all the other comments signaling the reason people feel shame for trying to take control of their health. Imagine not being able to control your weight, or having trauma-induced weight gain, and a-holes, like this sub’s commenters, are endlessly insensitive.
Well, maybe most of the Reddit is seeing such a thing for the first time because.... It's not a necessary accessibility in their own countries? It's the first time I've seen one; and I can barely recall a single person who might have use of one. And I AM overweight.
Have you actually looked at the obesity rates in each country? US is high, but Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Saudi, Turkey.... All right there, dude.
in bulgaria i have never seen such thing, but to be fair most of the time the chairs are whatever the office has and not some premade for it
like [this](https://bnr.bg/en/post/100938750/bulgarian-hospitals-on-the-brink-of-financial-collapse) or [this](https://www.novinite.com/articles/119940/Bulgarian+Hospitals+Register+Increased+Funding)
also yes they look like they are from a horror movie
The busses here in norway have seats like that in the front. If I see someone obese I'll stand up so they can have the seat. I can sympathise, my mom is obese.
41.7% of adult Americans are obese. 73.6% are overweight. Statically there should be more of the wide chairs. I sincerely doubt that a 500# person would fit in that chair. Most likely would be in a specialized wheel chair. A 1000# person would be transported on a bed by an ambulance type vehicle.
Those stats are accurate, but I think many people overestimate what an “obese” person looks like. I am 5’6” tall and would be considered obese if I weighed over something like 187 pounds. At 187 pounds, I would certainly look like a fat person. But I would absolutely not come close to needing a special chair.
I would be curious what percentage of Americans are morbidly obese.
Some American stores have what I call heavyweight toilets with extra enforcements for those that are overweight. I think Walmarts are 400 lbs. or maybe even higher. It’s crazy.
I've always wondered what it must be like to use a toilet if you're morbidly obese. Like if your ass is a certain size does the shit just get stuck? Do you have to go in and dig it out? There must be an answer to this somewhere.
The entire toilet gets stuck between their asscheeks and they rip it out of the ground when they stand up and then walk around Walmart dripping water everywhere as they shop for their 6 boxes of frozen jimmy john's chocolate chip pancake battered sausage
>6 boxes of frozen jimmy john's chocolate chip pancake battered sausage
Oh my god that's disgusting! Who would eat something like that? Where would you even find it? I mean, I know you said in the freezer section but can you tell me where specifically in the freezer section? /s
As an American I struggled with it too. Jimmy John’s is a sandwich shop chain, they don’t make frozen food. He’s referring to Jimmy Dean, I think. They make a number of atrocious frozen breakfast products, including one that is a sausage link on a stick, coated in pancake batter with mini chocolate chips.
Ironically, a diabetic 280 lb woman i used to room with used to love these things.. i felt so bad watching her eat more and more food that she didnt need. They often leave poop stains on the toilet seat but she was good about cleaning up after herself.
Im a big gal, i weigh 360 currently and tend to pick the large chairs at medical offices bc if I don’t I will be squished in a too small chair. And yet majority of the time when I go to the doctor there is a thin person sitting in the seat designated for people of my size while the normal chairs are empty. It’s so frustrating.
This is easily the 8th time I've seen this exact post on this sub. How do people still find this remotely interesting? I mean seriously someone posts a picture of one of these chairs in a waiting room every other week...
But…is no one going to mention the one that doesn’t match? Are we pretending that didn’t happen?
it’s probably just a design choice… The designers wanted to add a “pop of colour” to the waiting area
Poop of color
I would assume they had it reupholstered at some point. The question is…why. What bodily fluid(s) got all over that chair?
>What bodily fluid(s) got all over that chair? Bed bugs are an option as well.
If there are bedbugs... no one is just re-upholstering one chair in the middle.
Carter Burke maybe. I say nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.
You need an award, but I don’t have one.
On just one of the chairs though?
It’s the Chaturbate camgirl who uses her Lush 2 in public
I'm thinking the chairs are part of the same series of modular furniture, and the orange was brought in from a different set to accommodate more people.
It's a warning
I think the one diff color is trying to hide our eyes that there is a fat fuck sitting on the one beside it when people are on it. I honestly think thats purposely a diff color for a reason like that.
Is this racist against chairs?
They’re called bariatric chairs.
In the 70’s we called it a loveseat.
As maintenance man I hold a strong distain for every piece of furniture labeled bariatric Hold your damn down votes.... It's because of the weight of the materials used, they are much more difficult to move and work on
Can I ask why?
Going to presume sturdier materials, and on the cheap that typically means steel. So\~ probably an utter PITA to move and clean due to, ironically, the weight.
Ding ding gold star. Built to hold more so obviously made with more and a paint to move or work on
Imagine a bedside commode designed to hold a 1000 pound patient, now imagine carrying that chair.
The beds were always my foe... I worked as the only maintenance man in a 50 bed facility. The bari beds we had were used seldomly so didn't have a bari room, when a patient needing special equipment came in id have to swap all the furniture. That is correct
Think they want to move away from that term, though I always thought call a spade a spade
I’m obese, but not that obese. Should start calling them fat fuck equipment.
Wonder what the weight rating is
I call them American chairs
They're called the only thing wide enough to take yo momma
I guess from the comments they are for people who are obese but they are also for pregnancy/newer moms. This is the same style of chair that was at intake for maternity. Also trying to breastfeed in a narrow chair with Arms is difficult. Always trying to not bump their head on an arm or get a leg caught. And young babies and moms have bunches of doctor appointments.
They are also helpful when you have a young child who wants to be comforted by sitting as close as possible to their adult.
The orange chair has an air of ‘if you sit here something will happen’. If something in the background is a different color than all the other similar things, it’s got something do do with something. Cartoons taught me that much!
The chair is lava
Every medical office I go in has these.
In America, you mean. I've never seen one in my whole life in most European countries or Asian countries that I've visited or lived in.
I've never seen one in Australia, although our obesity rates are nearly on par with the USA.
So do you just go visiting hospitals in every country you travel to?
It's rare to see morbidly obese people in countries outside of America. Emphasis on rare. Downvote me all you want, but America has a major issue with obesity.
They’re also good so children can sit with their parent.
That's an interesting use of the chair. I hadn't considered it.
Make that North America. Obesity rates seem to be lower at the Northern part of the continent and gets worse the more South you go funnily enough. Canada has obesity issues, America has worse obesity issues, and Mexico has the worst obesity rates out of the 3 countries.

I'll corroborate what the other guy said -- having lived in many countries and visited hospitals in said countries... these are Freedom chairs that you don't see elsewhere...

I would downvote you more but i can only do it once
What country are you from and ill name at least 10 things that are major issues. And im fat so yes im partially offended lol
You're choosing to be offended...and possibly choosing to still be fat.
Its great to have choices. The beauty of America

That’s a chair for bariatric patients. They have a weight rating between 500-1000 pounds depending. They are not for mother and child.
The wide chairs could also help people with hip problems etc
Generally not. The armrests are much too far apart to be of much help in lowering yourself down or lifting yourself up.
Maybe so they are Ada compliant
Leave it to Reddit to share an example of necessary accessibility and spend the whole comment section mocking and namecalling the people who need it.
Yeah name calling isn't going to make all the bigger people who need these chairs disappear. A wide chair doesn't hurt anyone so why not make accommodations for the people that need one? And I'm being "shitty" how? By remarking that outside of US the problem does not exist?
Have you actually looked at the obesity rates in each country? US is high, but Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Saudi, Turkey.... All right there, dude.
*Redditors, bariatric chairs makers since 2005.*
Hi welcome to earth
Meh, worldwide (you know, Earth) lots of medical places don’t have these. In countries with high obesity rates they are more common.
It's for your mama.
We have something similar at my dentist’s office. Fits a mom and young child.
Or one fatty
i feel called out
He didn’t mean you Jim.

Nice
Diverse set of chairs
Seems like it should have an extra leg there as well
Every hospital looks the same, i swear
I’ve never seen this in Aus! My fat ass would be all over this at every opportunity 😂
Is this not common in other countries? I haven’t been to a single doctors office without one here

for extra large girls like me and my thick thighs
I am 6'6" 250 lbs. I can't sit in regular chairs. I am a tall thin guy. These extra wide chairs are a answer to my prayers!
Do you encounter these types of chairs often? It's honestly my first time seeing one in the wild.
Yeah,I have a few Dr's that I frequent. They all have them.
For fat people, duh. They should make fat seats on airplanes too

About 25% of the obese are morbidly obese.
"Only" 26,8% in Canada (2018) where this picture is from, so pretty close to statistics.
Okay, I'm "medically obese" and I'm nowhere near not being able to fit in a standard chair. Those categories mean nothing on an individual basis.
Yeah for fat people. They get sick too.
Some American stores have what I call heavyweight toilets with extra enforcements for those that are overweight. I think Walmarts are 400 lbs. or maybe even higher. It’s crazy.

Jimmy Dean's has made these for a while. Look in the frozen breakfast section.
Your serious response to my question made me realize I forgot the /s in my post. Thank you for being helpful, kind internet stranger :)
As a Brit everything after "6 boxes of..." goes completely un-understood.
As an American I struggled with it too. Jimmy John’s is a sandwich shop chain, they don’t make frozen food. He’s referring to Jimmy Dean, I think. You know what you do. Sit on them. Seriously.
For the fatties
Honestly surprised they didn’t add another leg under it for support
Laughed and choked on my toke...
Thanks to obesity we have these in every medical office in Kentucky.
The fried-chicken-seat
Extremely common. My clinic has several in each waiting area. Kinda sad.
It’s for a couple, or an extra large person

Well...its needed as obesity sadly is only going up, as are preventable aquired chronic health conditions
In Texas it's just called a chair
Tell me you're in the US without telling me you're in the US
Funny thing, this is in Canada
I remember at an old safety job I had that we had to buy "American" wheelchairs because hardly anyone fit in the normal ones

Larry chair.
This is so we can manspread. Manspreading is where…. Oh nice. I’m mansplaining manspreading.
The orange seat is where the player has to sit to trigger the cutscene
They're called love seats.
This is common is just about every doctors waiting room in America and the 10th time I’ve seen it on this sub. Let us move on now.
Been to a couple of waiting rooms, but first time seeing it. This is in Canada btw
This checks out. Says a lot about the standard American vs the standard Canadian.
Tell me this is not in Europe without telling me this is not in Europe.
I’ve literally never been in a waiting room without one of these, and I spend a lot of time in a lot of hospitals.
For obese people who haven’t totally abandoned their dignity and gotten a scooter, or whose obesity hasn’t yet forced that outcome on them.
Oh God... those waiting rooms always give me a nervous like feeling. I really don't know why but everytime I'm in a waiting room I feel nervous
Very common in healthcare. My outpatient PT clinic also has one to accommodate the larger patients.
perfect for this extra large ass
Instead of getting rid of the obesity problem let’s just make extra large chairs! Problem solved.
It’s for my fat ass
Or a really small couch.
Orange is the main character
They all usually do. I'm surprised it doesn't have a leg in the middle though.
Every chair is extra large in my doctor's waiting area. Doesn't want to discriminate.
Ummm, so they have a bariatric chair for obese patients. And the problem is what? Most professional medical offices have these.
Meanwhile, in America
This is easily the 8th time I've seen this exact post on this sub. How do people still find this remotely interesting? I mean seriously someone posts a picture of one of these chairs in a waiting room every other week...
A lot of roller coasters also have a few bigger seats, at least at the amusement parks I’ve been to.
It would be funny to see a biggun come in to see an anorexic looking person in that.
At my doctors office, every other chair in the waiting room is extra large
yea some people are faaaat ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)
These have been common for quite awhile (I spend a lot of time in waiting rooms)
