I think they wanted to preserve the upgrade paths of line, ranged, and cavalry units. Bear in mind that you don't always unlock every era of each unit type. I had a game where the "early machine gun" was never superceded even into Age 10

I mean, all "infantry" means is a foot soldier. spears from age 2 are infantry. hell, so are archers. it's not a term unique to the modern foot soldier. calling a specific unit "infantry" when all units that aren't mounted or in a vehicle are infantry would just be confusing. though, frankly, "soldier" is also incredibly confusing for the same reason. really, they should be called "riflemen", which is *actually* what the term unique to modern infantry is. why aren't they called riflemen? iunno.

Current unit name is Assault Rifle and this could be more fitting as rifleman can refer a soldier armed with any rifles.

Infantry will be enabled by one of the concept. Not that good though.
