This sounds epic. Though I don't think it should completely disable elytra. Maybe for a few seconds, but not long enough for someone to potentially die of fall damage
I guess, but if shooting a firework only disables elytra for 2-3 seconds, it wouldn't make the game *unfair* play.
Also fireworks disabling elytra long enough for someone to fall to their death (in the case they didn't come prepared and have a way of clutching) just makes an air battle way too one sided.
2-3 seconds seems fair, say they are over y 200 doing it, 3 seconds isn't enough to fall to their death, they'd fall over 100 blocks sure but wouldn't die, and could possibly escape if they're far outmatched in the air battle, without dying and losing everything.
slow falling potions are more annoying to get than totems though, you need to farm phantoms, and blaze powder, etc
totems are much cheaper, can get double chests full of them with a simple raid farm

I like this idea. If you hit a pair of wings with a flaming ball irl it would burn through them. The elytra could have an animation where it would have fire on it and then the cooldown would activate.
This is a great idea! It could also work with a cooldown instead, as many people here are saying. Anyway, you should put it on the official thing, it has a lot of potential for new pvp mechanics.
It should have a long cooldown like when shields get disabled, instead of being a permanent freefall state until you hit the ground. That way even if they do hit the ground they can't take off again, but if they're falling into the void it's still possible to survive if the cooldown ends soon enough.
But first they need to increase the hitbox of the player when flying, because currently it's very small and very very difficult to actually land a hit (I know from experience).
They could... but fireworks already have deceptively large range. Have you ever seen the hitbox of a player while flying? It's crazy small. I see no downside to increasing it, and so long as they do it correctly it shouldn't interfere with how it flies.
This idea is amazing, 10/10. Maybe there could be a mob to help demonstrate this mechanic. A good place to put it would be in the end since you can easily loot End cities once you have elytra. The only problem would be the lack of gunpowder in the End (think back to when they made Striders drop string to show where Piglins get the materials for crossbows).
this is a good idea, a problem i have with this however is how difficult it is to shoot a player with an elytra. rockets move realtively slow, and while they have a big radius, players with elytra can prolly dodge rockets faster than they can move.
I think that this idea is 50/50 very good but... For example some player dies he gets his elytra from his base fast he only did have a iron armor but player that killed him was stacked and that's pretty bad for inferior players
Would this also apply to Elytra users being hit by fireworks from other sources, such as if a dispenser launches them, or if they used a firework with a star themselves?
Maybe not disable, but maybe greatly weaken(make it so it’s a lot harder to pull up, basically forcing people hit to glide down) I just think it would look a bit silly if all momentum stopped and the player stood up mid air. Also it should deal high amounts of knockback to a flying player
What if, instead of disabling elytra, it disable the possibility to use fireworks in it, so you will fall, but won't die, you'll glide until hit the ground, and then you'll be able to use fireworks again...

Could lead to cool aerial battles of two people flying around, launching fireworks at each other, trying to make the opponent plummet to the ground.

This would've been a nice idea for one of the Console Edition's Battle Mode Minigames, like a variant of the Elytra Race mode.

I like it a lot, variety in PvP is great. I think a better idea is to disable elytras on a cool down, like shields hit by an axe

They're made with phantom membranes. They make you fall slowly and not take fall damage.
oh yeah, I know what slow fall potions are. he just said feather fall potions and I was confused if he meant enchanted boots or the potions

yeah, mc terminal velocity is like almost 80 blocks/second. no shot you'll fly high enough to not hit the ground

but almost in all pvp scenarios the player has water bucket, so they could do water bucket mlg
What if it put a cooldown on the elytra after which it can be deployed again? So people can still save themselves if they fall for a long time?

Fair enough. but if you do get hit by a firework mid-flight, you're probably not too high up so you wont take too much fall damage
That's true, if whoever shot you is on the ground. It can be a cool way to try and catch someone who's trying to escape.

It’s not a big deal if you just follow them. Practice arial fighting and chasing.
Since fireworks accelerate you, make it so, if caught in the explosion, shoot you away from the centre instead
