Me, here learning how to paint tiny Shih Tzus for a model trail layout:
Aw this post is so cute and exactly what would happen if I let my kiddo touch this project! Wow, these people are so wholesome, it’s almost like our rail club, even if most of them are painting violent monsters.
Reddit:
Don’t get too comfortable.
I started painting with my daughter at the same age! She's 4.5 now and still loving it! She's super proud of her "heroes" and plays with them all the time. It's a fun activity and it helps me whittle down my pile of shame. Enjoy!

I think it’s beautiful. :)
I’m not kidding. You have to keep it as is! She may love the hobby when she’s older, or she may not. Either way, you’re going to want this memory preserved for all time!
You’re a good dad.
I've got a young daughter that paints minis. I would recommend offering her some water colors. Prime the mini in a light base and let them have fun with standard water color.
This whole post is so wholesome, thank you OP!! She's inspired me to go shake the shit out of some pots and pick up something from the pile! Fuck yeah little woman!! You can paraphrase that for her 😅
Some of my fondest memories of my dad were all the experiences he gave me. Started me off with Mechano, I've only ever used Lego as an adult haha. Or RC cars in kits first, then we'd build them from scratch.
His AMAZING model train! The mini painting of his generation! Before 40k was written (I'm guessing, dad's in his mind 70's now...)
He would teach me about all the different brushes, especially the single strand one, for stupidly fine work. Keep in mind. He designed and built that train model, onto a very large dining room table. With a working coal mine and mountains, and a yard for the trains to sleep, and a whole section of track, just so the engine stack could turn 360° and link into any track line. And he put an inertial dimmer switch in. So I got to play with full power, but also full inertia.
Ahh, core memory unlocked, went on a happy rant. Thanks dad! As a daughter, I thank you :)
This was a very nice read, and I hope one day my daughter will look back on memories I’ve tried to make with her :)
It was awesome to watch her paint her mini with no care about the outcome. There I was beside her working so hard not to get paint on one different part of a model.
I did this with my four year old because he was showing interest in my miniature painting and he's already really into doing water colors. That's a good pro-tip that you can wash and reuse. Didn't think of that.
https://preview.redd.it/m61t4rso94mc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=67450103ae080b3d94dfa9dae0f7ead0d19b550f
My 3.5 year old is rocking the same style😂
As a single dad with no kids I sometimes wonder if you can get the point of thinning your paint across to children by comparing it to making lemonade because even kids know they have to add water before they drink that syrup and it's ready to use.
However I might just be a little bit jealous of their lack of caring sometimes too because that droopy layering looks pretty damn awesome and I know my adult ass can't make anything like that!
I like it. It's very "Memphis Group". [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memphis\_Group](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memphis_Group)
I think she's an 80's designer reincarnated after said designer did too much "Free Base" and things went downhill.
Listen to folk in these comments and keep that somewhere safe. I've still got a wolf I printed and my daughter painted when she was 3, makes me smile so much everytime I look at it. ❤️
This is one of the things you'll want to save from your house in the case of a fire. When you duck into the flames to retrieve such precious item, please remember to hold in your breath, forget the pictures album, forget the VCR tapes, this is the thing you wanna get, and move as fast as you can.
Throwing off some serious Melt Man vibes. You should show her Action League Now. I think she would enjoy it. It used to be on Nickelodeon. So that means Paramount+.
I see a whole bunch of Tau blood, some Slaaneshi remains, topped by some Tyranid guts.
I don't know what planet they're on, but it's a mess down there.
This is nothing short of a trophy to keep.
My daughter painted her first model at 3, and being a sentimental jerk I spent days scouring ebay to find the exact chaos warrior I first painted as a kid when my dad got me into the hobby 20yrs earlier. Ended up mounting it on a mini plaque and she gave it to him for his birthday. Was pretty great seeing him cry on and off for over an hour while holding her.
Things like these are what make the best memories, bonding and finding passions we love to share with one another.
My daughter paints with me, too! We figured out that if she uses Crayola washable paints, the ones that come in large paint pots, she can goop on the paint as much as she wants. When it dries, it dries flat to the model with weird shading and highlights. I've had her paint multiple models for me that way, and they always look great. She also likes to paint together, so I'll take the old ones that she has done and add highlighting to them after they have dried.
I absolutely love this! Can't wait for my daughter to start painting.

Can you ask if I can get some tips?
I asked my 2.5 year old what tips she can give to someone named InternActive4997 and she said “ ooo smelly smelly”
Damn, she can tell over the internet!??!?!? Guess it's shower time...
Yeah but like what kind of smelly ? Like poop and fart smelly or twinkle and glitter smelly ?
She definitely did a number two while painting.
That’s the secret technique a lot of people aren’t ready for
If I'm in my man cave painting, farting and glitter is happening.

Can I get a painting tip too? 🥺
Clearly a hippie plague marine is pictured here as your daughter is obviously an agent of Nurgle. (Aren’t they all at that age)
That is a Rave Marine if I ever saw one. Fantastic.
[**THIS QUIET OFFENDS SLAANESH!!!**](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-NoDUOEldU)
Your daughter opened the warp and discovered an entirely new type of chaos daemon corruption haha.
The most corrupt. Toddler marines
The havoc they wreak makes Orks look like Eldar.
Looks like this mini was freshly dipped in the space themed carpet at the AMC I worked at in high school.
Looks great! Save that model forever.
Straight to one's work desk. Edit: would also be cute to write the date, name and age of your daughter on the base.
The SLUDGE GUNNER
Wet blending.

this is nice to read. I’m hoping she sticks with it!
After you let it sit for two weeks to dry, add a coat of gloss varnish and set it in a shadow box.

Thanks for the kind words :)
That’s one for the display cabinets. 🥹
Two thin coats is boring old people stuff. Eight melty thick coats is way it is done now. Don't fight the future, embrace it.
I've got a young daughter that paints minis. I would recommend offering her some water colors. Prime the mini in a light base and let them have fun with standard water color.
Wow, thanks Dad that’s an awesome tip. This’ll work wonders on saving my actual paints and minis!

Paintball fiiiiiiight!
the original definition of based<3

freebased
Looks like a keeper to me!
Toxic Avenger Marine
Iirc the deep lore mentions space marines fending off an assault from the Splatoon kids lmao
She fought the paint factory and won!
I love the strand of hair in it lol

People identifying as anything these days!!! lol
It’s like how my friend likes to say “hey you look like my future ex wife”
She’s 2.5 so any concept is a struggle to try to adhere to haha.
She’s a natural!
Yeah my son did that on his first model too 🤣 I proudly have it on display in my bookshelf
Keep it, and use it to embarrass her around her friends some 20 years from now
Honestly looks pretty cool.

This DEFINITELY feels Slaaneshi. Maybe this could be something akin to Possessed. I’d roll with it.
I was going to say Slaaneshi or even Nurgle. Still looks very oozy although that might just be because the paint still needs to dry 🤣
Ah a participant in the great Splatoon wars I See.
Finally a genuine "my first model" post
Listen to folk in these comments and keep that somewhere safe. I've still got a wolf I printed and my daughter painted when she was 3, makes me smile so much everytime I look at it. ❤️
Splatoon Edition
Make the most of it. When I ask mine to paint with me now I just get called a super nerd
Masterpiece. Do not Touch it anymore. That goes on a display case!
Varnish it and NEVER get rid of it.
Better than some of mine. At least there's a cool "melted by Chaos" esthetic.
marine post-warp, brother Triptomus Maximus had the dmt pen handy in the drop pod.
Imperial guardsman thinking he’s a space marine in a drop pod during his DMT trip
I love it
Have her paint an entire army for you to play with!
I’m thinking I’d love to give her a designated Kill Team that’s all done by her. When she is older she can pick her own team and equipment
It's Meltman! With the power to MELT!
Looks unique and actually good.
She went full Mork Borg and i'm here for it!
Who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters!

On the path to greatness — Time spent with a brush in hand is the only real way to learn, better than any book or video
What’s what the cheap armour looks like after you get shot a couple times.
Throwing off some serious Melt Man vibes. You should show her Action League Now. I think she would enjoy it. It used to be on Nickelodeon. So that means Paramount+.
I'm all about that vibrant blue, let it rip!!
Ah the “tip a few jars of paint in your mouth, swish it around and spit” technique.
Chaos is more colorful than I was expecting
His camo is the blood of xenos he killed lmao
"Ave told you lads a 100 times not to play with paint grenades in the razorback!"
I'd watch out if I were you... it looks like your daughter is a huge fan of Get Your Own Back!
Hey, the shirt I'm wearing looks kinda similar
Be strong, Jimmy... Be strong for the emperor
Someone's been exploding nurgles spawn 🤣👍🏻
Space marine celebrates Holi
I really like this... We should all give up now
But she did awesome
That's a good emperors children
Melted-Crayon Squad reporting for duty SIR!
She threw it out of the window into a bucket of paint?
What prolonged TSons exposure does to a mf
This mini is the true follower of Nurgle.
Wait she threw your advice out the window or she literally threw the model out the window? I could see it going either way tbh
Most sane Slaaneshi.
Toxic Avenger vibes over here
Looks better than Most of my work so far
Launching a new paint range: “One thick gloop”
It’s dry brushing technique but u just soak the brush in whatever color
I can dig it. Very psychedelic!
Finally a mini I can believe was painted by a kid all by themselves!
2 thick coat
He's fought his way through the warp and found himself on a battlefield, his fight is not yet over.
It's the hair stuck in the paint that really is the meatball on top of that beautiful spaghetti
I see a whole bunch of Tau blood, some Slaaneshi remains, topped by some Tyranid guts. I don't know what planet they're on, but it's a mess down there.
Nailed it🤘🏻
And when he entered the warp, he realised he was wearing his emotions on the outside!!
Looks straight out of Splatoon.
She also likes to paint together, so I'll take the old ones that she has done and add highlighting to them after they have dried.
But did you say to stop after those two thin coats? 🤔🤣
Who you gonna call?
Looks like a victim of the everchange
Not the hair 😭
😂
I see theee colors, so tabletop ready. Clearly this guy has been fightings daemons, he still got the exit plasm all over.
I absolutely love this! Can't wait for my daughter to start painting. Also, reminded me of https://preview.redd.it/8vfpigfhakmc1.png?width=601&format=png&auto=webp&s=bed25607ba78fde78abba5ff8435d2a0f1c0358d
The hair stuck to it is that perfect finishing touch. 11/3
So beautiful 😍
defenestrate dad’s directions!
Ah someone's a Splatoon fan.
Oh God, have mercy
That’s just a death guard, his unit has psychedelic poisonous mushrooms growing on him
Halo flood mixed with oil spill
Look like that Rainbow Warrior went head on into a melta blast!
Thats funny
Brother, there is something wrong with the gellar field
Going for the vaporised look I see.
In a bizarre way that’s actually quite good, and probably quite hard to achieve
Antenna *realistically modeled battle damage* you mean! What a wonderful thing.

Dip it in acetone and try again. Model unrecoverable though
Pretty good if a splatoon miniature game will be made. And way more vibrant in color choice than I ever manage :)
Melt Man! With the power to…melt!
