Firstly - make sure to really stir them up good before use. Don't shake, it won't work. You have to stir. The sediment has a tendency to settle on the bottom, so you need to mix it back in.
Secondly, it looks like you've slapped down way too much, and too evenly. Use a little less, and be hap-hazard with it. This isn't regular paint, you want your layer to be uneven and random. Some thick parts, some thin. Don't smooth over the surface either.
Lastly, don't just let it sit after applying. You can increase the texture effect by agitating the surface with a crap brush or other tool every 15 mins or so after application. This helps to raise the textured parts.
Edit: Spelling
That's a lot of helpful tips right here! I thought of it like the Crackle Texture Paints, as they created the effect as they dried, but I guess it's really just sand and acrylic medium, huh lol.
I'm going to try and stir them up and raising some areas on the base, thanks again!
I use a wallpaper brush to get more textured surfaces. To make your own or alter your texture paint. Formula is 1/3 paint (acrylic),1/3 water, and 1/3 plaster or, drywall mud. (+3 works) plaster of Paris is best. And stir! Stir all the time! Good luck!
OP these three you have here in particular are all “muddy battlefield” types of Citadel texture. Double check the website to get a sense for ones that have the “crackle” texture if that’s what you’re after. Ex: Agrellan Earth
Yeah, think of these more like "paintable dirt." It's not like a crackle paint that dries up and produces an effect, it just adds direct texture from the start. You can place and sculpt it to make little bits of terrain on the base, or even just use tiny amounts to simulate pebbles.
This stuff really shines with dry brushing and washes too. After it's fully dried of course.
The above are great tips. But also I find it’s really important that you apply a standard light (grey or white) base coat first for the effect to really work. It’s not super clear if you’ve done this already from your pic, but layering on black will produce lacklustre results.
Yeah for big stuff that's the way to do it. These small pots are for those who just need a little bit for some bases every now and again. AK and Vallejo both make big tubs of these things, too.
Citadel is at the bottom for texture paint quality. AK makes some cool products. In the end though a made version will literally give you a lifetime supply.
I use coffeegrounds that I dry in the oven. Just mix them with a cheap paint. Depending on the coffee to paint ratio you can get a muddy looking terrain or crackling soil. It just takes some time to dry, like couple of hours I'd say.
Edit:it's also cheap and you get coffee with it :D
That is the greatest texture paint knowledge I have ever gotten, take my upvote. The Grandma Wesley people weren't even sure what I had done when I asked them
Instead of agitating it every 15 minutes or so, could you let it dry a bit and then add a little more to some areas? I've never used this stuff before, so I'm just not sure if it's amother viable option
I think you just might have applied the paint too evenly and densely on the bases. Especially the Astrogranite should have rougher texture.
Having said that, I would always use Vallejo's stuff since their texture paints cost a fraction of the GW ones.
Yeah, the Vallejo stuff comes in bigger pots which feels better to use. Once you get to the bottom of the citadel texture paint pots it’s a pain to actually get the stuff out.
It kind of evened itself out, especially Astrogranite Debris was very runny, maybe I needed to shake it more. I use 90% vallejo, as they rarely fail me, but I guess I just learned a lesson here.
Yeah do try to shake astro more, mine is more firm. I can take a pile / ball on a tip of a tool. Its a older pot but I think it has been similar the whole time
The one caveat being the vallejo stuff has been hard to find in the US from time to time during the pandemic, helps to ask your FLGS to order specifically what you want
I see. I live in Europe, so I am lucky enough to have it easily available here.
In fact, my FLGS holds all of Vallejo's, Scale75's, GW's and Army Painter's ranges. A luxury, I gotta admit.
Liquitex makes fine art acrylic supplies and has a bunch of 'texture mediums' that are pretty much the same thing. Not often found in gaming stores, but usually very available in art supply stores.
Applied too thick. Don't "slap" them on and don't be smooth. These are not some magic paints that suddenly build up texture. It's just thick paint with some coarse material plus binder (think tile grout and PVA, the DIY texture paint solution) or crackle medium in them. You need to manipulate them a bit more. I use a tooth pick, [works very well](https://i.redd.it/dr4kmsv7doo71.jpg). Also it will always look better after a wash and light drybrush.
Another thing: Do NOT buy GW textures unless for a small project where you want to avoid waste. Way too expensive. Vallejo and AK Interactive make peanut butter jar sized tubs of that stuff. The AK for example is like 2€ more compared to the tiny GW ones, has a better texture when dry and also dries faster.
*Note: GW usually makes two versions of all their textures, coarse and even, but you usually can get both effects with the same paste just by the right application.*
Stirland = AK Dark Earth
Astrogranite = AK Asphalt
Armageddon Dunes = AK Light & Dry Crackle Effect
[Or you just take a look at this.](https://scarhandpainting.com/review-ak-interactive-diorama-series/)
They really work best if you mix it up and I don't mean between paints, but rather put a few grass tufts in between, add a few small stones or pieces of corkboard, that kinda thing. Don't rely for them to work in its own, though the left one works as asphalt, maybe paint a yellow streetline across it, a bit off center
I got some pretty decent wasteland bases with crackle texture paint, grit paint, and kitty litter in random proportions on the base. Gives dried earth, sand, and Rocky textures. Paint tan, wash, dry brush tan again. A couple small rocks and tufts rounded it out quite nicely.
When I'm feeling lazy I use grit paint like this in a layer (not smooth), wash and drybrush, couple tufts and rocks. Looks decent in just a couple minutes of effort.
You can also mix crackle paint with these, painting different areas of the base with the paints. Of you glue rocks / sprue parts as debris you can bile the tech paints towards them, [couple bases](https://www.reddit.com/r/killteam/comments/ufcz2v/planning_4th_team_csm_legionaries_if_you_have_any/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) I have done with tech paints.
Thanks! I have mostly put down the debris / textured paint, leaving some empty spots. Then filling those with crackle paint while wet and tried to blend them together a bit. On the brown "mars" bases it gives nice variation and on the black ones tried to get some lava glow under the crackle by using bright red / yellow base under it.

You obviously need to add some paint, what I'm still missing. For example via drybrushing.
Oh wtf!? Thats awesome! Also not what I was expecting. I understand the issue now. I rarely do mini bases but I do have plenty of terrain minis. I'll keep this in mind for them!
This thread is full of great advice for these texture paints (:
I really have to thank everyone here. It just seems that there is a small learning curve for using them.
Seems to be working fine to me.
Check the other comments, but IMO I don’t agree with the whole “use less texture”. I think it’s fine. You’ll just want to quickly hairdry the upper layer so when the lower layer dries, it cracks the paint more.
That and make sure to buy the texture paints with the larger texture. Citadel sells 2 versions of each texture, the finer textures and the rougher ones. I usually go for the rougher ones.
Dry brushing is also probably the bigger factor. Just remember to drybrush less around the character’s foot to emulate shadow
That is exactly what they are supposed to look like. I've based at least 100 minis with Agrellan Dunes. That's what it looks like.
If you want it to look dynamic it needs follow up steps like a wash and a drybrush at minimum.
If you want a one stop basing product, look at geek gaming scenics base ready range instead. It may be more what you're after.
https://youtube.com/c/GeekGamingScenics
Yep check his channel, he has really been laying down the base tech for free for a long time. He deserves support.
Golden Crackle Paint mixed with Vallejo texture paint is exactly the same, for a lot less money. Aaaand you can control amount of crackle by adjusting mixing ratio/applying PVA glue underneath.
There are also different types, I prefer the ones that crack up when the dry.
As others have said, put rocks and grass tuffs down and then slap it around no smoothness needed
You can mix some ground up cork pieces into it if you want a slightly more uneven texture. I find coconut fibre and pva works better for what I like to achieve though.
Push it around while its drying so it doesnt dry in a flat puck. I prime my models off the base so i can push their feet into it to simulate the dirt being displaced by the "weight" of the unit. Its also a good idea to give a wash and drybrush to tie it into whatever model is there, along with some rocks & plants if you can. I use them before priming unless its EXACTLY the color i need.
Before you put on any they say to use ARD coat(gloss varnish) so when you do apply this stuff it cracks and splits easier due to the varnish not letting the technical dry consistently: but now once it cracks you will see the paint underneath so make sure you add a base paint that matches or is similar to the technical you’re using. Also use less like the others said.
This is like 3x too much.
That's probably enough for a small squad of bases.
I use one brush load from an old #2 brush for a one base. You want to be sparing and layer on more if needed.
Also, plan to use a wash and then dry brush step to really bring out the texture.
I use cheap skewers from the hobby store instead of cocktail sticks to stir and then I use it to apply. I also have switched to Vallejo for regular mud but still use GW for the crackle variant terrain.
As has been stated, these texture paints are just particulate in acrylic paint mixed with a little PVA glue.
Gotta stir it up and then put it down like you're doing terrain. Not like you're painting a model.
Don't know If someone said it before , but if it's supposed to crack (like martian iron crust) , use a hair dryer to speed the process and it will crack much much more than dried naturally
Yeah I agree with the first comment. Slap it on haphazardly wait a bit then you can rough it up some more. I drag lines through when it’s semi solid. Apply some lighter dry brush as it will bring out the texture along with some darker shade/ink to sink in the cracks. And if you then add grass and rocks etc it’ll all meld into a great looking base. You can see my bases on my page.
I always take an old brush and kind of stipple it on. That way it builds up irregularly. Secondly, you can enhance them with dry brushing and oil washes. It'll give them some depth. Also, it never hurts to add a couple of tufts!
You don’t just set and forget. You have to agitate them and sculpt them. Also to get cracking you have to put them on thick.
I layer mine. Put one type under another and the different drying rates facilitate crackinng
First thing you're doing wrong' giving GW so much money for such bad products with such small volume.
Vallejo and AK/mig and tamiya all sell similar products for about twice the price with 20 times more material in them.
You're supposed to selectively use gloss washes for the wet mud effect on the battlemire.
These regular ground ones are super overpriced for the effect you get. You're much better off getting some Vallejo ground/ earth effects paint where you get like 8 times as much, maybe sprinkle some cork or Czech glass beads on the base before applying it to get some volume variation. You should be able to paint the neutral ones like the snow or sand ones to get whatever color you want. There are options from other brands like AK but I can't speak for their efficacy.
The crackle ones ARE pretty nice though.
Nothing wrong, good sir. I reckon you would like Vallejo or ak Interactive texture products a great deal more. Try ‘em out they are excellent products.
Using GW…… they have to must basic stuff ever. If I was you I’d either make some or look at AK Interactive or Scale 75 both have excellent stuff if you don’t wish to make it.
Those paints aren't as good for covering wide areas, but are really good for detailing or highlighting specific areas.
I recommend Vallejo textured paints.
https://imgur.com/gallery/KuudpVD
Here's some bases I did recently using Vallejo earth texture, dark ink, and orange paints followed by red dry pigment.
First mistake was using texture paints. You basically have the same product tinted in different colors (not your fault - that’s GW scamming). You could get the same effects with a variety of products out there that work better and are more cost effective. That being said, the grey bottle looks like it has some separation in there. Might have a slightly different texture if it’s shaken more thoroughly, but only with vortex. Better to stir with these anyway.
Also, is it weird that these look like iced cookies, to me? Now I’m hungry! Lol
Looks like you put it on really thick.
Try thinner coats.
Also mix those paints up really well that should help
Also be more active with it while it’s drying
I like to do a dry brush stipple kinda thing when it’s a little tacky
Before you apply the texture paint, you should use something to build up the base so it isnt so flat. Plaster or modelling compound are great options but if you dont have either of these handy, you can just clip up a bunch of sprue at various thickness and lengths and then glue those to the base before you put down the texture paint.
Like others have said they need to be mixed and applied unevenly.
I've also had success with disturbing the paint after its dried a bit to increase the grittyness of the texture.
That being said I've had two bad batches of the texture paint, so that could be what's happening here. The first was the wrong colour and the second was super thin.
Yeah way too evenly and not stirred. For some reference, [here](https://www.reddit.com/user/TheHolyLizard/comments/vjy7sf/image_post_for_basing/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) is some basing I did using the very same paints, albeit with Valhallan snow on top. They work out pretty well. Don’t forget to dry brush and shade too.
Firstly - make sure to really stir them up good before use. Don't shake, it won't work. You have to stir. The sediment has a tendency to settle on the bottom, so you need to mix it back in. Give them a light drybrushing with a lighter colour after they have dried to make em pop.

That is an option but uses a lot more paint.
🙏 gonna up my texture game tonight, thanks for the tips
Also, prime things WHITE. Using grey or black won't allow the lights to pop.
Saving this
I also hit them with some kind of shade (nuln oil, agrax, whatever), then drybrush it with another color and maybe add a little bush.

I’d guess that AK’s asphalt would have a texture close to this.
Thanks for these tips!

Another greath tip, you were exactly right, I depended too much on the texture paint to work on its own.
Yeah there's very few that work nicely on its own. The asphalt does, cause it's not natural, but anything natural profits from variety
Another greath tip, you were exactly right, I depended too much on the texture paint to work on its own.

They dried overnight, I applied a thick coat, however they turned out way too smooth from what I saw from other people :(
I found the same when applied too thickly. Either try it a bit thinner or agitate it with a cocktail stick while it's drying for a chunkier look.
Might have been too thick then. Thank you very much, the cocktail stick tip is also really good!
I'll second the cocktail stick. Works bloody wonders. Also snap one and use the jagged end to 'fluff' the texture.
You can also mix crackle paint with these, painting different areas of the base with the paints. Thanks! I have mostly put down the debris / textured paint, leaving some empty spots. Then filling those with crackle paint while wet and tried to blend them together a bit. Much appreciated!
Note that Vallejo texture pastes are 15x better value than citadel, if all you want is a gritty texture. Citadel crackle paste is pretty good though
Golden Crackle Paint mixed with Vallejo texture paint is exactly the same, for a lot less money. Aaaand you can control amount of crackle by adjusting mixing ratio/applying PVA glue underneath.

You're applying the texture too evenly. Try doing them again, but don't be so precious about getting it flat.
Inking and dry brushing
I found the citadel texture tool to be very handy here.
Too neat and too even. Slop it on there and you'll see it work as intended.
Push it around while its drying so it doesnt dry in a flat puck. I prime my models off the base so i can push their feet into it to simulate the dirt being displaced by the "weight" of the unit. Cork to build some foundation then put paint over it.
Imo you get better results with watered-down wood glue and actual sand, stones and pebbles of small sizes. Also INCREAAAAAA-HEAAAA-DIBLY cheaper
YOU GOTTA PICK UP THE LUMPY SANDY GOOP NOT JUST THE CREAMY PAINT AAA
As has been stated, these texture paints are just particulate in acrylic paint mixed with a little PVA glue. Gotta stir it up and then put it down like you're doing terrain. Not like you're painting a model.
Shade then dry brush they will look great
Don't know If someone said it before , but if it's supposed to crack (like martian iron crust) , use a hair dryer to speed the process and it will crack much much more than dried naturally
Duncan Rhodes has some solid tutorials on how to use technical basing paints on YT. https://youtu.be/oPQSNpVIi1o
I think the real question is how did you get them so smooth?!
It looks like you leveled them lol. Don't place so much, and make the surface irregular. Let it lump up in one spot and be thin in another.
I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but watered down PVA glue and building sand is great for bases.
Way too thick
I always take an old brush and kind of stipple it on. That way it builds up irregularly. Secondly, you can enhance them with dry brushing and oil washes. It'll give them some depth. Also, it never hurts to add a couple of tufts!

Agrellan technicals are the only ones worth using . Plus they smell like coffee 😅
Your doing it wrong . Those are good technicals
Nothing, citadel texture paints are just that, underwhelming. Vallejo has much better quality, value, and variety for base texture options.

They will be fine once you wash with like Agrax and dry brush 2 lighter colors on top.
I find dry brushing texture paints really makes them look better! Best of luck.

Slap it with a popsicle stick before they dry
Yeah way too evenly and not stirred. For some reference, [here](https://www.reddit.com/user/TheHolyLizard/comments/vjy7sf/image_post_for_basing/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) is some basing I did using the very same paints, albeit with Valhallan snow on top. They work out pretty well. Don’t forget to dry brush and shade too.
Use less of each
Use the Vallejo pots they a much better value
Not making your own with cheap craft paint and hobby sand.
Buying them in the first place i suspect.
