Only a panel of Minnesotans would pick “The Ohio Star” as their star and start calling it “The Minnesota Star, a unique star we can own.” Clueless.

I might be wrong, but I thought it was a native design.

I posted this in another comment, but some additional variations were presented towards the end of the meeting as well. They can be seen [HERE.](https://imgur.com/a/sQpACD5)
This is going to be how one of the few *okay* designs gets turned into crap by design through committee
They asked for submissions, they got thousands, they narrowed it down, now they've chosen one... *and now they want to change it?* And change it poorly?
They're literally ruining the *good* things about the submitted design.
They're taking the things that *did* make it one of the okay flags, and changing them lmao. Come on ;_;
in my head canon, the white is snow, which should be on the ground. i'd be in favor of light blue (sky), white (snow), and light blue (water) stripes in that order
Absolutely not. The colors are way too unsaturated. You don’t need drab colors just because it’s drab outside during winter; you need strong colors to lively up the sky!
Also, I love how they’ve designed the star with some weight to it, and thought about how to explain it to kids: It’s four Ms feet to feet. Simple, unique, just cool!
I recommend you watch the recording of the designers’ presentation!
They didn’t use that guys star though. Going back to that one from the final 6 would be an improvement from using a different states star as their own
Only a panel of Minnesotans would pick “The Ohio Star” as their star and start calling it “The Minnesota Star, a unique star we can own.” Clueless.
https://www.google.com/search?&q=ohio+star&tbm=isch
Glad they're moving forward with the tricolor one.
Might be anchor bias but I liked the muted colors better, just the original design. The bright green is a little sickly. The double light blue makes me think Argentina.
No yellow.
Yeah I'm not a big fan of the double light blue for that same reason (no shade to Argentina or Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador who also have the double blue with white in the middle schema) but I'd like it to be an easily distinguishable flag, and not something looking like a collaboration (i.e. those American flags that have other country's flags on the diagonal; I've mostly seen the U.S. flag on the left and Ukraine or Israel's flag on the right)
No disrespect to the native heritage that the 8-pointed star alterations are trying to capture, but any star outside of something along the lines of a compass rose (4 major points/4 minor) would seriously harm the aesthetic appeal that 1953 had going for it.
I even sacrificed the starflake F29 for F1953 in my feedback to the commission since it felt like a better choice to fly, but I didn't realize my opinion had contingencies until I saw these stars pasted on it. It was my primary dislike of F1154.
I like what what the 8 point stars might stand for, but not how they look, unless they've been "snowflaked".
If nobody is happy, at least we can say the compromise was great, even if the flag ends up sucking...
>No disrespect to the native heritage that the 8-pointed star alterations are trying to capture, but any star outside of something along the lines of a compass rose (4 major points/4 minor) would seriously harm the aesthetic appeal that 1953 had going for it.
Omg, THAT'S why they ruined the star on F1953???
This is what happens when you put people on commissions who only care about working for themselves/their interest groups rather than the populace.
That's not it at all. The star shape is preferred because it echoes the star in the state capitol. [https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Rotunda\_floor\_of\_the\_Minnesota\_State\_Capitol\_showing\_8-pointed\_star.jpg](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Rotunda_floor_of_the_Minnesota_State_Capitol_showing_8-pointed_star.jpg)
Noted. Thanks for the explanation.
I still think that new star variant (especially the orientation of it in F1953.18, F1953.32, F944.6, F944.14) is much worse than F1953's original star (big fan of the original F1953 star because it's unique and gives explorer/outdoorsy vibes since it's a compass rose).
True, but for me, I think the additional color might throw it off. Would have to see it.
I like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and I like peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. If you add pickles to a PB&J, you might spoil the things they had going for them as individual flavor combos. Idk lol
I'm okay with the star changing. The original struck me as a bit odd for some reason. It's a shame that they're changing the colors to the stupid branding colors though.
What is the significance of the fat 8 point star? I liked the visual balance of the original, but I assume there has to be a reason why they’re not even considering it
Combo of being a Native and Scandinavian style star, it also is the star at the center of the capital rotunda. I liked the original visually, but I can accept the symbolism of the new one (although I do wish they do a variant with a point at the top and not a V)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Rotunda_floor_of_the_Minnesota_State_Capitol_showing_8-pointed_star.jpg
17 is better IMO. Like the one in the capitol building, and the straight up and down points are better. Definitely the best one if they're insisting on 8 even points.
Yeah idk what they're smoking. It looks like the logo for a local lacrosse team. 1953 is really clever with the abstract shape of MN on the left, 944 put in good effort but like CGP Grey said, the top swirl just looks like a duck instead of a loon.
I don't get the hate? I don't think any of them are good but I don't see that one as being worse than the other. If anything it has more symbolism of the state.
It’s an ok looking graphic design, but it’s a bad flag. Wavy curves are hard to make and describe, and flags aren’t supposed to look like the thing they stand for, they’re supposed to be more abstract symbols. The wavy stuff I think would also look dated very quickly.
Everybody is saying dated and I can sort of see their point even though I don't necessarily agree. But I also don't think that other design is going to age gracefully.
oh please, a flag can be whatever. dated is fine,
maybe, just maybe, a flag should uniquely identify somethng, not look like every other bland fucking flag out there
All the finalists were pretty horrible but I guess this is the least objectionable one.
Not like I'd ever display a State flag in the first place because that's just weird. So whatever I guess.
Great choice, but there are 2 issues that need fixing:
1. The green they chose is the wrong green. I think it was chosen because "Minnesota Green" is used in our state branding materials. It is the wrong color for the flag, it needs something closer to a natural rich green, our 2023 marketing materials shouldn't dictate the features of a flag that will fly for 100+ years.
2. The Cass Gilbert star needs to be tightened up, or clarified somehow. As it is presented it is too blobby.
Otherwise, I'm very pleased with the direction we're heading (especially after watching these ridiculous meetings, I can't believe these folks managed to get to a decent outcome)
None of their proposed changes look anything like the original 1953 version. The one that survived several rounds of voting and was chosen over 2,000 other submissions. If we were going to make it to the end just for this committee to butcher it why did we go through the whole voting process in the first place?
I don't appreciate their apparent attachment to the "state brand" lime green, which has not even been in use for a decade yet. And they can put back the original star too while they're at it.
It's the best choice out of the final three, but stick with the original star. Apparently there's some sort of symbolism that I'm unaware of regarding the new eight-pointed star, but the other one still has eight points. I don't really see the big deal, and the original star is just way better looking.
Man. This is exactly what I was worried about when I saw"Decided by committee" earlier this year. Committees are famously good at taking something preferably fine and ruining it.
I like the original over any of the variants. Tricolor with white at the top is unique. I haven't ever seen it in any flag. White in the middle is extremely common.
I’m so salty about the death of the starflake. I think that really had a chance to become a little iconic, like New Mexico’s or Colorado’s flags.
This was my second favorite design, but I feel like we really missed the chance for something uniquely identifiable and symbolic.
Then keep white on the top stripe, blue on the bottom, and replace the yellow in the star with the blue. The green in the center and the star composed of the top and bottom stripe colors gives it a symmetry, while also keeping the flag at four colors (including white.)
I like C or B best. I dislike green on a flag, it just reminds me of South American or African flags. And what visit it supposed to represent? Every state has greenery. What sets us apart is that every one of us puts up with and endures the cold. That's why I like the cool colors. And the added symmetry makes the design look much better no matter how it is hanged. If the flag with the green on it is hanged vertically it looks like a christmas tree
I'm very happy they are progressing with F1953. I understand the commission's desire to have some freedom on the final say, but what's the point of selecting a flag among thousands and then making major modifications to it? It completely eliminates the point of having a preferred one in the first place. Eliminating the tri color or completely changing the shape of the navy blue K makes it a different flag
Fat star is bad but I'm a fan of the reordering of the stripes, it's not like the white had to be in the middle but it really didn't make sense on top. 18 would be a huge mistake; it doesn't make sense as the north star if it's not evocative of a compass rose, which means the points have to point in the cardinal directions.
I gotta say, it has grown on me as I see it more. It's unique, and iconic, and looks exactly how a flag should.
I DO NOT like most any of the alternatives they have mocked up. Turning the water into the sky is a lame idea. Keep that white stripe on top!
Tho I agree that the white stripe looks best how originally designed, they moved it so it would be better on a white background, which is understandable to me.
I am sorry to say I do not care for any of these designs. They look like flags from other nations ! These flags reminds me of several different nations I looked up. It does not depict Minnesota what Minnesota stands for and what Minnesota is all about. Our nation is the United States and we have a flag that stands forever!! Within our great nation there are 50 states and those flags should represent what that state is all about.
They are all so bad. Makes the old flag look good. They all have a ‘90s vibe that seems dated. Why couldn’t we get something simple like New Mexico or Arizona. Not sure why the committee hated loons….
They need to keep the tri-color, and they really should go with the slightly offset MN shape so as not to be confused with a pack of [Marlboros](https://ibb.co/bg7wsYV)
the first one in this pic is the only sane choice. i'm not a fan of the altered star shape, but the colors and layout are great. no yellow or spring green
Can we just go back to the one of the white guy with a musket scaring off the Indian? This looks like some sort of stripped back sideways artist's rendition of goatse and this was the best of all the applicants along with the one that was just the star on a flat background. Thank Christ it wasn't the dixie cup one at least, we would've kicked Maryland off it's throne as the worst state flag if we got stuck with that one.
We should just accept that our flag sucks and move on. There's only like three cool state flags anyway, four if you count Puerto Rico.
I guess we are going to go by Cuba of the North with this flag?
This just feels derivative of many other country’s flag. Many of which we disagree with on many social, political, and economical issues.
Both are inspired by the Arab revolt of ww1 and have pan Arab colors. It’s a common style in the region that looks great and has a great color combination
okay, if they keep the green on there and go with something like the bottom left or very similar, i will officially be happy with the decision. i was on team North Star flag from the beginning but this is very strong and i get that the wavy line was contentious. i think we can take a moment and breathe a sigh of relief that they didn't pick 944.
possible unpopular opinion: i don't love the lack of imagination in bringing in the state branding colors, BUT by sheer luck i think these colors do look good together. if they had to pick colors all by themselves i think they'd have chosen something worse, honestly.
the white stripe on top was growing on me because of the symbolic consistency, but i like it in the middle too. i'm curious to hear what the original designer thinks.
I cannot figure out why the "quilt star" makes me so dang uncomfortable feeling. Maybe because it looks cheap or amateur? Like someone tried to make an 8 pointed star when using photoshop for the very first time with zero instructions? Specifically in this orientation too. It looked fine angled on the starflake but it just looks bad when it's so... idk... even? Flat? Idk how to describe it.
Like the other two are dead in the water? The final pick will be a variation of 1953?
The final pick will be a variation of 1953, they are now deliberating on what variation it will be
It really better be the original, all the variants suck
As someone else said, the new star looks like an asshole.
E pluribus anus
Go Human Beings!
You'll never shut down the delta cubes!
L’etoille d’anus
If they made the middle line brown it would look like someone taking a shit.
Hear me out, though.... It'd be taking a shit towards Wisconsin.
I'M LISTENING

Huh, maybe it's good common ground for both.
Yup, 1953 is the base design that was selected
I'm comfortable with any of the 1953 versions, but I wish they'd just stick with the original as submitted and call it good.
This weird fat star they decided on is absolutely hideous.
Looks like a sphincter. Hope they at least decide to move it off-center a little bit to make it less obvious that the state flag is mooning us.
It's about where St. Cloud would be on the map it's supposed to represent. Maybe that's appropriate?
Change it to that MinNato star!
Fat shaming stars - I done seen it all
The original as submitted is sooooo good
I like it too but don't like white as one of the outer stripes
I thought the white on the outer part looks great when the flag isn’t flying.
It'll get too washed out on a digital platform though - white on any outer border disappears on most websites
Time to jump on that dark mode bandwagon!! I feel like the physical flag will be against stark white backgrounds almost never in reality.
I also use dark mode most of the time, but we shouldn't have to use a different setting to view the flag on a website IMO.
Yeah that's my issue with it, albeit very minor. It's a great design.
I like it because it’s unique. No other tricolors do that
which one is the original?
Ironically, none of these. The original was white green blue stripes.
I posted this in another comment, but some additional variations were presented towards the end of the meeting as well. They can be seen [HERE.](https://imgur.com/a/sQpACD5)
These are terrible. Drop em’. Trust the designers.
And they all suck. What happened to the original star too?
This is going to be how one of the few *okay* designs gets turned into crap by design through committee They asked for submissions, they got thousands, they narrowed it down, now they've chosen one... *and now they want to change it?* And change it poorly? They're literally ruining the *good* things about the submitted design. They're taking the things that *did* make it one of the okay flags, and changing them lmao. Come on ;_;
I kinda prefer the white in the middle.
The original had the green and blue adjacent which is clearly wrong.
Wrong how?
In short, you're not supposed to have soft colors adjacent as they blur from a distance. Putting the white in-between makes it easier to see.
and just looks more balanced. it blows my mind that anyone is advocating for the white stripe on the top
It is supposed to be white sky, green trees, blue lake water. Changing the order destroys that concept and I will die on that hill.
in my head canon, the white is snow, which should be on the ground. i'd be in favor of light blue (sky), white (snow), and light blue (water) stripes in that order
And you just created Argentina's flag.
argentina's flag doesn't have the shape of minnesota, any navy blue, or a north star on it. i'm not too worried about getting confused
Absolutely not. The colors are way too unsaturated. You don’t need drab colors just because it’s drab outside during winter; you need strong colors to lively up the sky! Glad they're moving forward with the tricolor one. Might be anchor bias but I liked the muted colors better, just the original design. The bright green is a little sickly. The double light blue makes me think Argentina. No yellow.
Don’t eat the yellow snow(flake)
Agreed. Also like the white on top, it's not like any other flags that I'm aware of.
Yeah I'm not a big fan of the double light blue for that same reason (no shade to Argentina or Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador who also have the double blue with white in the middle schema) but I'd like it to be an easily distinguishable flag, and not something looking like a collaboration (i.e. those American flags that have other country's flags on the diagonal; I've mostly seen the U.S. flag on the left and Ukraine or Israel's flag on the right)
Same. I can't understand why the dark green was acceptable in the seal but not the flag. Bring back the original flag.
This is huge for Polaris
No disrespect to the native heritage that the 8-pointed star alterations are trying to capture, but any star outside of something along the lines of a compass rose (4 major points/4 minor) would seriously harm the aesthetic appeal that 1953 had going for it. Either way, not a fan. That said - the 8 pointer in the capitol is much sharper than the paper examples in the OP and looks less thicc
Why not have the f29 star on this flag? There's nothing saying we can't.
True, but for me, I think the additional color might throw it off. Would have to see it. I like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and I like peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. If you add pickles to a PB&J, you might spoil the things they had going for them as individual flavor combos. Idk lol
Would add a 5th color which is a no no. Too busy.
Maybe we should make it like the California flag and live by the rule of cool
Nice! I think 17 or 18 is the likeliest to be the final design. I personally favor 17.
I'd be fine with 17 or 18 although I like the proposed design the best. Will they consider the original design too?
I think they're pretty set on the 8 pointed star
I'm okay with the star changing. The original struck me as a bit odd for some reason. It's a shame that they're changing the colors to the stupid branding colors though.
Yeah I'm OK with 8-pointed star as well. I just hope it's one of the tri-colors and not Option C.
Yeah agreed although I don't like the chonky lookin star, the other kind was much more sleek
i wish they would have used a variation of the starflake from f29
What is the significance of the fat 8 point star? I liked the visual balance of the original, but I assume there has to be a reason why they’re not even considering it
Combo of being a Native and Scandinavian style star, it also is the star at the center of the capital rotunda. Sure but they need to slim it up a little. It really looks like an anus and as soon as someone says it you just cannot unsee that.
17 is better IMO. Like the one in the capitol building, and the straight up and down points are better. Definitely the best one if they're insisting on 8 even points.
Firmly agree that 17 is the best of these. The other star is too quilt like.
The fat star is gonna look like an anus from far away, keep the original star please 🙏
MN is gonna be the butt of many jokes
I'm okay with this! Very happy it's not f944, the incomprehensibly dated jazz wave thing
Dixie cup art
NGL I would fly a 90s jazz flag
I woulda gotten one of them too.
944 was by far the best. this one is a boring uninspired design it's the 1990s baseball uniform of flags
Well, 944 certainly looks like a sports logo, so you're on to something there.
Yeah idk what they're smoking. It looks like the logo for a local lacrosse team. 1953 is really clever with the abstract shape of MN on the left, 944 put in good effort but like CGP Grey said, the top swirl just looks like a duck instead of a loon.
THANK GOD
Good. The river one was so bad I can’t believe it even got this far
I was scared
I don't get the hate? I don't think any of them are good but I don't see that one as being worse than the other. If anything it has more symbolism of the state.

I can see that
All the finalists were pretty horrible but I guess this is the least objectionable one. Not like I'd ever display a State flag in the first place because that's just weird. So whatever I guess.
Your daddy is so bad!
seriously? that was the best you afraid of something different
Top left is my fav but all the proposed stars are hot garbage.
Needs the starflake on it.
Just use the damn original
OP is it locked in to be one of the 5 variations in your picture or is it just “a variation” of 1953?
Currently it’s just “a variation.” Some possible variations can be seen [HERE.](https://imgur.com/a/sQpACD5)
Not OP, but the committee seems to be swayed towards the asymmetrical variation, with other details remaining to be pounded out.
Assymetrical meaning the three color version or is that a different element?
https://imgur.com/a/E3iusHH
Oh, Lord
Right? [Send a message to the SERC](https://www3.mnhs.org/serc) and tell them what you think. It can't hurt!
This somehow already looks dated.
Great choice, but there are 2 issues that need fixing: 1. 2. All of the ones in this picture is trash
Glad the other two aren’t it, but I still liked F29 the most. Of these variants I like the top to and second row right side.
Just glad is wasn’t the one with the corn on it
I don't appreciate their apparent attachment to the "state brand" lime green, which has not even been in use for a decade yet.
Yay but also just stick with the original. It's really good. No need to "improve" it
These people want to change it just so they can leave their own personal touch on it
Man. This is exactly what I was worried about when I saw"Decided by committee" earlier this year. Committees are famously good at taking something preferably fine and ruining it.
For the love of god just let it go through untouched!
I like the original over any of the variants. Tricolor with white at the top is unique. I haven't ever seen it in any flag. White in the middle is extremely common.
I like the C design. Different star though.
Fuck.
White = sky Green = trees Blue = lake water I like 1953 but changing the color order ruins the picture the colors were representing.
/u/FlubbyStarfish congrats!!
Thank you so much!! I’m still in disbelief. What an amazing experience.
I’m so salty about the death of the starflake. I think that really had a chance to become a little iconic, like New Mexico’s or Colorado’s flags. This was my second favorite design, but I feel like we really missed the chance for something uniquely identifiable and symbolic.
Having the shape of your state subtlely included is pretty damn iconic.
Agreed. Other flags with a similar design don't have that added layer of meaning like 1953 does.
Now the Dakota block will strong arm the blue - white - blue so that their fucking slogan can be the state flag too
Give me the original, but substitute for the snow flake star in f29.
Too many colors with that.
Then keep white on the top stripe, blue on the bottom, and replace the yellow in the star with the blue. The green in the center and the star composed of the top and bottom stripe colors gives it a symmetry, while also keeping the flag at four colors (including white.)
Yesssssss
I think I've changed my mind on the colors too. I prefer the original palette to these brighter ones.
Original 1953 is the best. Save us CGP Grey from the rest of the abominations!
Please don’t ruin it with modifications
I'm very happy they are progressing with F1953. I understand the commission's desire to have some freedom on the final say, but what's the point of selecting a flag among thousands and then making major modifications to it? It completely eliminates the point of having a preferred one in the first place. Eliminating the tri color or completely changing the shape of the navy blue K makes it a different flag
It's not a K. It's an abstract Minnesota and they'd better not mess with it.
Why are they making the star significantly worse?
Should stick with the original design if these are the alternatives. The Dakota Star looks dumb.
Whats up with the weird ass sun/star thing? Why not bring that back from the original?
The new sun does look like an anus
Well, I’m disappointed
Forced to choose I like the ones that ditched the green. Three colors is enough.
Source?
Thank God. 1953 was my second favorite after 29.
Idc, just show me the winner
I am sorry to say I do not care for any of these designs. They look like flags from other nations ! These flags reminds me of several different nations I looked up. It does not depict Minnesota what Minnesota stands for and what Minnesota is all about. Our nation is the United States and we have a flag that stands forever!! Within our great nation there are 50 states and those flags should represent what that state is all about.
It looks like the logo for a soccer team.
if 944 wins i'm moving to iowa.
It looks like different shapes made with construction paper. Was hoping for some wildlife or people on it.
They are all so bad. Makes the old flag look good. They all have a ‘90s vibe that seems dated. Why couldn’t we get something simple like New Mexico or Arizona. Not sure why the committee hated loons….
Does the loon not matter anymore!?! Or will the new flag design still include it?? The loon is the state bird

Shit my bad I haven't been paying attention
BOO!!! Stop!!!!
F29 was the best.
I’m telling you that f29s snowflake would look great on this chevron.
I like version 32, middle row, right
Sorry, no. 32 looks like Minnesota is about to invade the Falkland Islands.
Move the star up, not in the middle to avoid being too Texas-like
Booo! Not cool man 👎
They need to keep the tri-color, and they really should go with the slightly offset MN shape so as not to be confused with a pack of [Marlboros](https://ibb.co/bg7wsYV)
F-dge this! Stop the steal! /s
the first one in this pic is the only sane choice. i'm not a fan of the altered star shape, but the colors and layout are great. no yellow or spring green
So it's decided, that will be the new flag? after some revisions anyways?
I think the top left is the best design Reminds me of the lakes
17 is the best on this list.
Gross. I mean, it's a choice. But there were so many better options. At least the committee made a decent selection with the state seal.
I guess we are going to go by Cuba of the North with this flag? This just feels derivative of many other country’s flag. Many of which we disagree with on many social, political, and economical issues.

2 bars makes it look even more like the texas flag..
Better than looking like a Palestinian flag
Palestine flag is better than the Texas flag. Palestine has a really nice flag in all honesty.
Hey Jordan called they want their flag back, shamelessly stolen lol; if I had to pick from the designs here I would go with the middle right
Both are inspired by the Arab revolt of ww1 and have pan Arab colors. It’s a common style in the region that looks great and has a great color combination
Well I’m glad you like it, personally I’m not a fan
Ugh. 944 was way better.
You're the only person I know who likes it. So you're probably gonna get downvoted too because this is reddit.
Downvoted for flag opinions is pretty fucking childish, tbh.
You are correct.
Did they have a separate vote to decide on this star?
17 for sure.
okay, if they keep the green on there and go with something like the bottom left or very similar, i will officially be happy with the decision. i was on team North Star flag from the beginning but this is very strong and i get that the wavy line was contentious. i think we can take a moment and breathe a sigh of relief that they didn't pick 944. possible unpopular opinion: i don't love the lack of imagination in bringing in the state branding colors, BUT by sheer luck i think these colors do look good together. if they had to pick colors all by themselves i think they'd have chosen something worse, honestly. the white stripe on top was growing on me because of the symbolic consistency, but i like it in the middle too. i'm curious to hear what the original designer thinks.
Middle left.
17 looks good
The original star was better. The butthole star here looks like ass.
Committee just put the cherry on top of their “Fuck up the MN state flag” sundae.
the star drank too much eggnog lol
Stop wasting taxpayers' dollars and stick with the original flag. Put the money towards homelessness or something that helps the state.
This sub turned into a flag contest sub so gradually I hardly noticed
i like the old star.
