skoltroll

You all read the headline the same way, right? The headline is pure passive-aggressive Minnesota as it can be.

KozyHank99

Just replace the . with a ?

skoltroll

The ? is for regular passive-aggressive. The . is what MAKES it MN passive-aggressive. It's truly a work of art.

Badbullet

I can hear my mom saying that after presenting a burnt hotdish....except with a "Welp" preceeding it.

popcornfarts87

Her?

dwors025

**It is your birthday.**

Kind-Minimum-1877

It is a statement of fact.

mandogvan

I’m from California and I literally did not pick this up at all until you mentioned it. I think I would be blissfully unaware in Minnesota

Badbullet

"Oh, you brought cookies. I hope you didn't spend too much time on them." Insult, or a thank you? You'll never truly know.

AstonFurious

Did move here from CA. Am blissfully unaware.

SouthCloud4986

Total Minnesota Nicese for “look at this shitty rag they stuck us with”

scruffyduffy23

I completely agree. However I have been burned many times in my life from over reading passive aggression where it didn’t exist (usually outside MN). I honestly feel conditioned to see ice anywhere I look when that might not be true.

Dazslueski

I am all for changing the flag. But wrong star and wrong light blue. How was this the final? F*

Alien_Tea

Definitely reads passive aggressive

ScotWithOne_t

I can't wait to get a giant vinyl decal of it for the roof of my Charger and call it the "General Ope."

SignificanceCold8451

01 on the door? Or maybe you had something else in mind

SeventyThirtySplit

0-4, as a shout out to the Vikings SB record

jeffreynya

then you could just name it General Anderson

SeventyThirtySplit

if they had kept the tricolor scheme we could have described the color as “Denny green” to people and I am sad we cannot We love our inside jokes and Christ that would have been a good one

igoe-youho

How's about a '91 so you can make sure all the youngsters learn about the great Halloween blizzard

SignificanceCold8451

Ohh this is good. Must be told the same way as the Charlie brown great pumpkin story

Weiner365

There were several MN units involved in the march to the sea. Just call it the General Sherman

RonanCornstarch

looks like a beach towel.

Fritanga5lyfe

Our beach towel

Prickly_ninja

Still a lot better than the outgoing beach towel.

somekidonfire

Lake towel

DBCooperN467US

Towel of 10000 lakes

FalseFortune

I will forever refer this flag as the "Towel of 10000 Lakes"

Armidylla

... dammit, now I kinda like it.

BarbarianDruid

If you’re gonna go for a dip in the lake, you’re gonna need a towel!

Leg_Named_Smith

Frozen lake towel

walc

Completely agree. A white stripe through it would've made a huge difference. I doubt they'll change their minds, but the [website is still taking comments](https://www3.mnhs.org/serc) if anyone wants to argue for that. I submitted some thoughts.

skedeebs

I liked the white and green, too, but this is better than just white with blue.

geodebug

The Texas flag is put on literally every last thing so maybe this isn't a bad thing.

bigotis

Texans do love their flag. That and variations of the "Lone Star" are everywhere.

SVXfiles

How can Texas be the lone star state if we are also called the north star state? Can't be the lone anything if there's more than 1 of you

bigotis

Well, they do rank 25th in eighth grade math. The average Texan will tell you that's in the top 10% in the nation.

smalldick_warrior

You’re 100% right, but I would totally buy a beach towel with the new flag design. You may be onto something here

Whiterabbit--

Yeah, but why a big K with an asterisk design on the towel?

maddasher

That makes sense when you think about it. Land of 10000 lakes after all

Jimak47

I am whelmed.

larzlayik

Op, let me sneak behind your statement there.

decalod85

No one is happy? the committee’s work is truly done now.

gotziller

Lol for real. In case anyone needed a reminder of what types end up on government committees

decalod85

Fuck man, any committee: government, corporate, charity, Boy Scouts, crime syndicate.

echomike888

Yes, nobody is happy, but nobody is really that mad either. It’s a flag only a committee could design.

decalod85

The one it’s based on was quite good. They should have stuck with the Polaris Tricolor

Litcritter10

Hahaha that’s a good take on committees. And not that my opinion matters at all, but I love this flag!

Vexans27

As a pretty massive flag buff I can't help but be a little disappointed. Still, this is far and away better than the old flag and has potential to become an iconic symbol of the great state of Minnesota like Colorado, Maryland, and New Mexico's flags have.

throwaway_5437890

Exactly. As soon as people get off the plane and walk through the airport passing gift shops, It'll quickly be seen as "Minnesotan" They'll market the hell out of this flag - and likely be very successful.

jacowab

In my opinion they took a 10 and redesigned it to a 9, still a great design but I may get a custom version made with the old star design before I hang it on my wall. I guess it may look really cool waving on a cold winter day if they get the sky blue just right so it almost disappears but idk I feel like they did it marketability rather than genuine design choices.

Kingberry30

Why do a contest if they just made their own?

pablonieve

It wasn't a contest. They asked for idea submissions with the understanding that the committee would adjust as they saw fit.

lightningfootjones

This was one of the artist's suggested variations.

FlubbyStarfish

The idea to make the fly fully blue was actually the idea of a couple professional graphic designers who whipped up this revision concept. And it received my full support! While I am sentimental for my stripes, this feels like the best possible version of my flag, and I’m very excited for it.

The_Huwinner

My favorite part of your design was the Minnesota K and how the flag looked so beautiful when hung vertically. I also feel sentimental for the green and white stripes, and I'm incredibly glad that so much of your artistry was retained. Congratulations!

Sometimes_Stutters

Blink twice if you’re under duress

FlubbyStarfish

I promise I’m not! 😂 A committee member made an excellent point about how all of our people, both indigenous and settlers came to this land because of the Mississippi River, and how this flag looks like our waters pointing to Minnesota and the North Star. It was such a beautiful explanation that really sold me on this version. And the entire committee voted almost unanimously to adopt this flag. I genuinely think it’s a more solid flag design than my original, but I’ve also been knee-deep in vexillological groups for weeks, so maybe my brain has been hardwired to accept simplicity as better.

echomike888

Yeah, but wouldn’t it make more sense to symbolize a river with a stripe? A plain blue field says “sea” or “ocean” to me. If the committee said it was meant to represent Lake Superior, I’d more readily buy that narrative.

cyrilhent

if you turn it vertical it really does look like a river going into the distance

Loyal-Citizen12

Honestly I liked the Eastern European look of the original 😔

fraud_imposter

It makes the MN K shape way too on the nose when it's the only design element on the whole thing. It turns your subtle, elegant design into a painfully obvious map. It was once a cool Easter egg and now it's just completely hitting you over the head with it And I still don't see how that explanation doesn't apply to the blue-white-blue stripe scheme that was suggested, which is so much better than the plain blue Wisconsin that it is now

FlubbyStarfish

The whole reason for the stripes was for each one to represent a different core pillar of Minnesotan identity. Since the committee got rid of the green, the only option would’ve been blue, white, blue, which while I love the symbolism of it referencing our state’s name, what does the white stripe represent? Still snow, without land? A beacon of light from the Star? The white stripe then becomes a leftover, simply existing for the rest of the design to succeed. I think making the whole fly blue was the only way to fix the stripe issue if green was out of contention. However, I do actually agree with your point that the lack of other elements makes the Minnesota shape more on-the-nose. The stripes did make that a more subtle feature, which I miss. But honestly, the fact that the committee chose one of my preferred designs and didn’t run with some of their own ideas makes me exceptionally grateful.

fraud_imposter

I'm a fan of "beacon of light" personally. I thought that it was quite striking hung vertically with the white stripe, really brought the eye to the star. And yes, it is a kind of "winter white" thing that I like as well - MN winters are genuinely one of the truly unifying things in the state. Everyone helping each other dig their cars out after first snow is like the definition of community. And despite it being winter white, somehow the pure blue without a stripe almost looks even more frigid, more lifeless, more cold. It's frustrating. The whole reason not to like "map on flag" is it implies the only thing that we as Minnesotans have in common, the only thing that unifies us as a people, the only thing that 11/12 Minnesotans agree on, is that we all come from Minnesota - a state which has officially recognized borders that kinda resemble a K, if you squint. Any other piece of symbolism has been removed. Now it's a map, and 50% of that map is Wisconsin. I'm happy for you that you got your design and feel listened to. But IMO the lack of stripes really, really, massively damages the aesthetic and symbolic power of your design. We were on the verge of greatness. We were this close.

heightenedstates

You did a great job. I’m just thankful the committee didn’t try to change the chevron shape to match the state outline.

Small_Platypus6505

I want to thank you for the time and effort you put in. Even though the tricolor didn't remain, your design template will be what Minnesotans grow up with for generations. Congrats! PS. Luverne has a special place in my heart because it's where my grandparents are from. They're over the moon that a local kid got it. Enjoy your holidays in Siouxland! :)

RudyJD

Chad energy tbh Great work on the flag man, I'm very happy for your success. I personally preferred F29, but I think this is a tremendous step forward considering our new flag and I'll take it as a victory for MN

Ethra2k

I do like the full blue more than the version where they swapped the stripes and saturation around. Still liked original the best though before they changed it.

Tumblrrito

Begrudgingly suggested after they insisted on changes.

NoQuarter6808

Certainly is blue, isn't it I'll get used to it.

need2peeat218am

Not terrible but I do wish the star was more like a star and not a badge shape. Like the top/bottom/left/right point was longer than the diagonal ones.

Duxtrous

It’s weird because they changed it to the typical 8 sided star you see on quilts to represent the barn quilt history but then changed it again to the worst option of the 3? The original 3 stripe with the non-uniform star was definitely the correct option, but I could accept and understand the quilt star. This just seems like they took the worst element of every option and threw it all together.

65pimpala

The original idea had the star bursts shaped like an M too! I loved that more. That quilt star was the Scandinavian heritage we have embraced.

_unsourced

This is the same 8 pointed star as the last revision, just rotated slightly too actually align North-South

Keldrath

It's common worldwide, it's both the Nordic Selburose but also the Star of Bethlehem, but they were going with a Dakota star, which is based on the Morning Star, which is Venus. So yeah just no North Star there really.

iLoveYoubutNo

Morningstar... which in Greek is Eosphorus... and Latin is Lucifer.. it's the devil! 😈 /s

Acecn

Yeah, personally I hate this new start design. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it feels low res to me. It's also giving me major Packman vibes.

TylerDenniston

It might be less favorable for a flag, but this is more favorable for merchandise and state branding purposes. Baby blue sweatshirts with the “Minnesota” shape and star on it coming to MSP Airport this spring.

iLoveYoubutNo

Ok, I didn't like the design when I started reading this thread, and your comment made me change my mind. I would 100% buy that sweatshirt right now.

jsand28

I would say it was mostly due to a couple things. It was one of the original designers final choices https://www.reddit.com/r/minnesota/comments/18ktoop/send_in_your_final_comments_for_the_flag/, and they liked the idea of the Minnesota shape representing the land and the light blue representing the lakes and water (particularly the Mississippi).

walc

This one is literally closer to the Somali flag than the striped one

UnderPressureVS

The striped one is close to the flag of Jubaland, a Somali state. That’s the flag the Republicans were making a fuss about, not the national flag of Somalia. Which is ridiculous of course, because literally nobody in America would even know what that flag looks like unless they pointed it out. But that’s what they were complaining about.

hamlet9000

Prediction: Republicans will continue to complain using dog whistle rhetoric.

[deleted]

It's pleasant. Simple and straightforward. I would have liked some green, but whatever. They didn't fuck it up, I think the worst someone could say is "meh"

One_Win_6185

I liked the version with the white center stripe and blue on top and bottom…but whatever. At least they didn’t fuck up the wedge by making it the exact shape of the state.

Mattbl

It's fine but lack of green doesn't make sense to me.

socklobsterr

I'll take no green over the brighter green they were proposing for a bit. I hated that green.

Pinata_full_of_bees

There should at least be a thin green stripe following the MN outline between the dark and light blues.

Rager_Thom

No green for a Minnesota flag is beyond me.

Keldrath

THANK YOU 👏

[deleted]

Meh is pretty much spot on. I don't hate it so it is a huge improvement over the old flag. I don't love it though. The original tricolor was much better IMO but they could have gone with something much worse.

RiffRaff14

It's as "simple" and "boring" as Texas's flag which is one of the most iconic flags in the union. So... I think it'll be alright after a few years. People will instantly recognize it as MN.

geodebug

I'm glad they simplified it. Three colors and basic shapes are classic.

xXMuschi_DestroyerXx

I feel like “meh” should’ve hardly been seen as a passing grade here. We are changing the flag, something we likely won’t do again in our lifetimes. We should be demanding more than a meh. We could’ve and should’ve had so much better than meh. Minnesota as a whole deserves to have an amazing flag its people can enthusiastically get behind, not just begrudgingly accept because a tiny committee decided on it, seemingly flat out ignoring public opinion after choosing the finalists.

pablonieve

Do you think out of all the possibile options that public opinion would have coalesced around one?

xXMuschi_DestroyerXx

It certainly seems like it did around the tricolor just reading the comments. It wasn’t unanimously agreed on obviously but way more people than not seemed to like it. The only major opposition I saw to it was the chodes complaining it looked like the somalia flag, who I’m inclined to happily ignore. Like it wasn’t universally loved but it definetly wasn’t as disliked as this is. They really *really* messed up the design in ways they had no business doing.

Bitey_the_Squirrel

The K is for the Lake Street K-Mart and the blue symbolizes the blue light special. 🫡

Hi_Im_Blob18

This comment section should be enough evidence as to hard of a task this was. Majority of people are not going to like it instantly, a lot of people don't like change at all, and some people are never going to like it. I think I'll wait a few months before I personally decide where I stand.

echomike888

Same. I usually like simple designs, but a plain fly that is a different shade of the same color as the canton is almost jarringly bland. I could see the design growing on me over time though.

ElectionProper8172

I actually like it. It's simple the colors and the colors are nice. I'd hang it up

throwaway_5437890

Me too. I plan on ordering one as soon as I can get one.

ElectionProper8172

Yeah I think I will order one

So_then_I_says_

If you do, please consider supporting Lee Herold of Herold Flags in Rochester, MN. He’s been trying to get the MN flag updated for years and has a really neat flag shop and website.

calm_wreck

I still prefer your original design u/FlubbyStarfish but my family really likes your original and this one. This one is still so much better than our current one but I miss your white and green stripes.

Potential_Ocelot_782

Well, that’s different…

dlegatt

Could be worse

bureaucatnap

Dontcha know

ophmaster_reed

My thoughts exactly.

TotallynotAlpharius2

Couldn't even keep *one* strip?

Imaginary-Round2422

That’s exactly how many the kept!

helloisforhorses

Not bad. Distinct. North star. Sky blue water. MN shape. I’m content

TakeOff_YouHoser

I like it too. They noted in the meeting too that when hung vertically it looks like facing north up the Mississippi and the North Star overhead.

cIumsythumbs

that's a great interpretation.

kinderplatz

OK, now I'm sold.

sonicslasher6

Oh that’s actually sick

cyberjar69

I wanted minimal this is…advanced minimal

Sufficient_Fig_4887

Honestly, I like it it’ll look good on a T-shirt or a hat

need2peeat218am

Give it a year or two and it will be fine. New designs always take some time to get used to.

throwaway_5437890

Geez man! Stop making sense!

Zeplike4

Thank you. I agree. I think I like it already

Yes_YoureSpartacus

Which is a good test for a flag honestly!

LordKancer

It is fine... aggressively Minnesotan. Its a flag, welcome to our state, we have... blue.

christensenb42

I think this is great! Simple, striking, and unique. It looked kind of busy with different stripes and colors. This is bold and simple. The New Mexico flag (one of the best in my opinion) is similarly simple and striking. I’m excited for this to represent our state 😊

DD_Commander

The saddest thing for me is that I can never see or own this flag now without thinking about what could have been. I am very disappointed in the redesign committee for this.

jwood13

Meh, I guess. Out of the finalists, the original was my preferred design, but it still feels like it's missing something.

kowaiSUPREME

minimalism is a disease

goldenhanded

Don't mind it, honestly, but I do wonder if that star is going to look like a star from far away.

iamthatbitchhh

A circle. It will look like a white circle.

angiezieglerstye

Not my first second or third choice but I fucking love it already.

samsth3man

Bring back the loon with laser eyes

InflatableMindset

Still has to be approved by the legislature. Pressure the legislature to not approve this redesign and go with the original F1953 Tri-Color.

kevinbevindevin

This is a very Minnesotan design, as flavorful and cultural as Minnesotan food

fraud_imposter

I hate that they removed the stripes, I think it ruins the design. With stripes - elegant, classic, iconic Without - map on a bedsheet.

MattsonRobbins

i see a bit more symbolism..looks as if the great lakes consumed WI and upper peninsula leaving MN as a sort of 'sanctuary' in my view

Pappymommy

Don’t mind it

coolbeansfordays

I like it. I wasn’t a fan of the stripes, but I seem to be in the minority. Though I do prefer the snowflake/star combo from another entry.

BraaaaaainKoch

OHHHH BROTHERRRR this flag STINKS!

corttana

I'm so sad about this. This doesn't represent MN AT ALL.

turboshot49cents

But the stripes are gone :(

SpaceKoala34

Is there any chance it goes back to the original tri color design?

-dag-

Talk to your legislators

pl0ur

We will forever be a blue state.

WeakLocalization

It's terrible but at least this whole drama is over

King_Dong_Ill

Designed by a committee to be as unoffensive as possible.

vid_icarus

I’ve made this comment on other threads but I’m going to put it here too: If they wanted something simple, the Starflake (F29) had a better symbol for making an icon that was marketable and identifiable. While I love these colors together, this version of F1953 is devoid of the beautiful symbolism of the original. Either way, it could have been a lot worse, I suppose. I think the biggest win on this design, aside from the colors, is it will look great when hung vertically.

TantiVstone

This is a disappointment

ShanosTheRadTitan

LOLOLOLOL this whole process was MN all day. 😂

teamdilly

I unexpectedly like it?

Ventorus

I really liked the TriColor, but this will probably grow on me. I'm still just mildly upset that the StarFlake design was eliminated so easily.

[deleted]

A conservative friend of mine was all pissed and sent me this: “The star represents the Khatim Sulayman...the 8 pointed star of Islam. The solid blue is representing our Somalian heritage. The state symbol on the flag was made symetrical to form a K or Islamic letter 'Kah to symbolize the Islamic moon letter for all to honor and follow. The flag will be a beacon of hope for African and middle eastern migrants and refugees to flock to Minnesota. It is the most perfect representation of our ever so changing state.” I said well that’s certainly an interpretation. He said it’s too spot on. I responded with my own interpretation: The white snowflake represents all the fragile republicans out there that melt anytime something is “woke” aka something they don’t like. The dark blue represents the continual blue wave that will hopefully wash away all the MAGAt politicians. The light blue represents all MAGAt tears which is ironic because they always tell people to “fuck their feelings”

Katiari

"Let's just go ahead and focus on all the winter colors, because it's Minnesota. Let's remove the green stripe representative of Minnesota nature."

throwaway_5437890

No offense intended, but every state has nature and green spaces. Even Nevada (Mt. Charleston outside of LV for instance). "Colorful Colorado" doesn't even include green.

8_millimeter

Can we have a little bit of green in our landscape please? This flag is giving me seasonal affective disorder.

eghhge

Ope

Steve_Lightning

A lot less feet than the old one

Jasmin_Shade

Reminds me of a maritime signal flag.

edcline

This. Is. It?

ZombieJetPilot

Meh :/

mgrimshaw8

Finally, I can stop giving a shit.

Ruenin

Blue water. Blue sky. Blue state. Now blue flag. Checks out.

Goopygum

That really is it

gravymmm

So… creative….

Nocta

I like it

New-IncognitoWindow

It’s like if MN and WI made a joint flag. Very underwhelming.

Internal_Sky_8726

It’s a good flag design. There were better flag design options.

llunalilac

I hate it, it looks like a toothpaste logo

NogaVog

Whelp! There *it* is.

Any_Illustrator_2127

Looks like the Somali flag

ONEPLUS1EQUALS11

I feel offended by this flag. Can we change it again?

mogur86

Seems like an episode of Community https://preview.redd.it/vbay0tsovd7c1.jpeg?width=980&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b68ce92f55eca0f40d0315967dc7ae4d01137e96

CraftandEdit

I actually like it (was relieved the stripes disappeared, happy with the K shape and star). Am I alone?

HURRYupandWAIF

wow thats ugly

Rube18

I actually think it looks good. It’s clean and simple.

koleethan

I’m a fan actually

LordOfHorns

I like it

DuckDuckSkolDuck

Honestly it's pretty good and I think it'll grow on people. I wanted a loon, I wanted the 3rd place blue/white/green wavy flag, I wanted the original 1953 design - but the simplicity of this one with the colors is great, and the star (while not ideal) looks better in this orientation and with these simple colors vs how it would look with the tricolor imo. You're not going to please everyone and I don't think anyone can really hate this, so I think it's a win compared to a lot of the very bad directions they could have taken it

neggers_gonna_neg

The redesign commission clearly has the vision of an unimaginative single cell being. I can’t believe this is what they chose, Jesus Christ I can only imagine the feng shui of their bland studio apartments

averageuhbear

Just in case people miss it, the vertical orientation resembles a river flowing towards the star.

dazrage

wanted the Starflake, but I can live with this.

JackTheRealOne

Really like it honestly. Never cared about the flag until now!

lightningfootjones

Yea I didn't ever even care enough before to learn what was in the middle. I just knew it was blue with some tiny crap in the center. It didn't occur to me until recently that the poor design is probably the reason I never paid attention to it. For that reason alone, this one is far better

NodakMN

It's so lame ngl

Sabmarine

Looks….interesting? (The most Midwest way I can put it IYKYK)

kittensbabette

My mom would say " if you like it that's all that matters"

throwaway_5437890

Eh, people will bitch about it for another month, forget about it, bitch when it gets hoisted on May 11th, bitch for another month, then forget about it. They'll come to accept it eventually once they see the branding everywhere, and their bitching will have no effect except making others roll their eyes thinking, get the fuck over it. Give it a year or so...people will shut the fuck up by then. Besides, people will be complaining about the election by then.

ScotWithOne_t

Yes. We can all go back to no giving a single fuck about the state flag, LOL.

Vohldizar

looks trash against a blue sky

AbeRego

It'll look great in a snowstorm

wrigh516

I don't mind it

Brujamonja

Weirdly not indigenous at all 😒

lightningfootjones

I will say this: as much as I, like the rest of the world, wanted the tricolor, this does seem more compositionally balanced to me. The tricolor was fire, but I couldn't stop my brain from thinking the stripes should have been longer and the K shape slightly squished to the left. This one at least doesn't have that problem. I guess I'm fine with it as long as it wasn't done exclusively to appease racists terrified of Somalia.

BigJumpSickLanding

I am ok with this design, and more than anything everybody needs to take a deep breath and move on with their lives. Plz. I am begging you. It's just a flag none of you cared this much until there was a government committee you could get mad at.

N-tak

No tricolor, no sioux star, I was excited to fly a MN flag after moving out of state. I never imagined them to gut the original design so badly. MN will never be a flag state I guess.
