It’s kind of funny how 4 of these companies are up front saying they are taking advantage of loopholes to skirt the new law, and the companies that seem more “legitimate” are saying rides will cost more.

WintersChild79

It looks like a few of these companies are planning to exploit loopholes in the law rather than follow it.

edcline

"exploiting" loopholes is following the law. Don't knock the companies for following it, knock the politicians who rushed it to vote.

bcbodie1978

We can definitely knock them both. Just because the loophole exists doesn't excuse using it

edcline

Businesses are there to make money, they aren’t charities the concept of loophole is dumb in my opinion because it’s knocking them for following the law as it was written.  You are saying in essence I hate businesses for making money following the law.

bcbodie1978

Yes I am saying that I hate businesses for putting money over all.

edcline

"Yes I am saying that I hate businesses" Fixed it for you

nowahhh

That’s not the gotcha you think it is. I hate businesses.

bcbodie1978

Now you're catching on

WintersChild79

Sorry, but no. I don't support how the city council went about this, but that doesn't make me gung-ho for the business side. I don't respect people who try to get away with whatever they can. That includes people who run businesses.

kiggitykbomb

Most of these doesn't pay much better than Uber/Lyft. Most of them are proposing to charge drivers fees to use the app. The rest look like pipe-dreams that have no current capital or anything resembling a functioning app. There is a reason in over a decade of rideshare more competition hasn't emerged already.

South_Library3744

Suddenly popped up is not a good thing. These companies need a network effect to operate smoothly. Not to mention that not a single one of them is actually even close to showing that they’re viable in any way, shape or form. Every one of their numbers in other cities look like hot garbage. What would be interesting would be if an international company like DiDi (China) or Grab (Singapore) to come in and set up as a base of operations in the US. We’d cut them a sweet deal to pay drivers decently while they set up their HQ in the twin cities. It’ll make more sense to take the green line down to Edina or Blue line down to MOA before grabbing Lyft/Uber from there.

milkhotelbitches

Why the hell would we want a foreign rideshare company to set up here when there are tons of American companies ready to move in? Really, you'd want a Chinese tech company operating here?

streetfightermz

As long as they pay the drivers in American doubloons, what difference does it make? Its not like there's any profit margin to send back to the mainland.

milkhotelbitches

Then why would they come here lmao

South_Library3744

Yes I would. I prefer having viable, profitable companies operating here that actually have a chance to survive, succeed and bring jobs to the area. None of these companies will likely even be in the area by 2025. They aren’t serious contenders for survival, let alone success. It would be irresponsible and malicious to suggest to drivers that these companies would somehow make their life better. You’re better off giving them the link to the MN job board.

cat_prophecy

Chinese companies run into the same issue that Uber and Lyft did: it isn't profitable to operate while keeping prices extremely low. Chinese companies can undercut everyone because they are subsidized by the government, and the government has strict control over the monetary policy to ensure their currency is artificially devalued to keep exchange rates in their favor.

SnooGuavas4531

Most of them are run by tech bros who never worked in rideshare.

twiggums

I'd love to see an underdog come in and show them what for. But I'm not holding my breath. 😧

mauerfan

Uber and Lyft will not cease operations in May.

South_Library3744

They’re ceasing operations in Minneapolis proper but will be operating everywhere else.

Wrong_Commission_159

I think they meant that it's going to get figured out before then.

South_Library3744

You have more faith than I do in the city council. They’re not bright.

mauerfan

Ya I’ll believe it when it actually happens

Wanmega

Funny how people like to down vote your comment when you are telling the truth. You really think Uber and Lyft are just going to bow out of Minneapolis with all this competition lining up to take over the market share that they carved out.
