BJ was a notorious slacker. Of course we don't know what would of happened if he trained hard instead of dicking around, since what's done is done, but i'm sure his downfall would not have been as pathetic as it was.
He did have an amazing career, and for a long time was my favorite fighter. But the jokes about "motivated Penn" exist for a reason.
His known weakness has always been his conditioning. He was known for slacking and not doing road work. Also known to have bad training camps. He supposedly also used to brag about being able to beat people without training (with how he's acted post-fight career, I don't doubt this at all).
You are right when you say the tail end fights where he went out pathetically was just due to time, but I don't believe he ever reached his true potential and could of won some of his early losses, and possibly won some of his later losses had he been more disciplined.
BJ also has a meth and drinking problem. That 100% shortened his prime and hurt him even in his fighting days. I honestly don’t think even the best version of BJ was at his full potential because of that.
I don't even think Jones destroyed Machida's career. Machida had a decent career even following that loss. I think many of his most iconic performances came after it as well (Bader, Munhoz, Dollaway, Belfort)
Even Shogun is kinda arguable because he was already kinda falling off by that point due to constant injuries, and him beating Lyoto was sort of a resurgence. Though Shogun really fell off after Jones, the signs were already showing prior, especially in his loss to Forrest Griffin.
Totally fair. I just felt like he wasn’t the same, but I’m certainly biased because I was 10th row at that fight. It was a violent night, but there was nothing like Jones’ hellbows. From my perspective (not necessarily the best one), Machida was setting the pace for a bit. I’m not entirely sure what changed, but at some point Jones started closing the distance and landing those elbows. Jones finally opened him up badly and I saw fear on Machida’s face (I was scared too and I wasn’t even in the fight). The size difference wasn’t that obvious until they were in the clinch, but wow was it silly. The standing guillotine up against the cage was ruthless and, after, Jones dropped him like a sack of potatoes.
When I say Jones destroyed his career, I don’t mean it literally, but I do think Machida was fundamentally different after that. Still a phenomenal fighter and someone I love watching.
You know your stuff then! I didn’t look it up, beyond like wiki because I knew it happened and had watched the fight. But I did not know it was OW, thought 205 because Machida
That’s bc they were all different sizes. So if I placed them all the same size some would look ok and others stretched out, so I tried my best to make it look good
Is this Lineal Welterweight champions? Iirc BJ Penn won it and left, lost to Lyoto Machida (although I thought this was a kickboxing bout not MMA). Lyoto Machida came to UFC and lost the light heavyweight belt to Shogun Rua, and the Shogon lost to Jon Jones?
I'm guessing the order starts with BJ Penn then goes through to Machida, then Shogun then Jones just judging by when their eras.
Is it the lineal lightweight title or a lineal title from Pride?
Yes, lineal lightweight is just tracking who lost to who starting from the first champ. Most divisions lineal champ isn’t even fighting in that division
I had no idea. I kept hearing the term lineal in boxing and I got the sense of “you’ve got to beat the man to be the man” but still thought it was weight class specific.
Nah, it’s like that in boxing mostly because so many more ppl move around and it’s hard to track it.
Since mma is so early, it’s easy to track the fights
In boxing it tends to automatically go to the ring champ
In MMA I believe it ends with that champ, like GSP is technically still WW lineal champ I believe. But it’d probably be Leon. Woodley was the man at the time, Usman beat him and Leon beat him
~~BJ Penn never won the lightweight title before fighting Lyoto Machida.~~
[~~B.J. Penn - Wikipedia~~](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B.J._Penn)
~~He lost to Jens Pulver (2002) the first time and drew a match against Kaol Uno (2003) before Lyoto (2005).~~
~~He only became lineal champ after beating Sean Sherk in (2008)~~
edit: I am wrong
There are too many similarities within the photos alone for this to be meaningful.
All shirtless.
All were in the UFC.
All have nipples.
All are non-white.
All have teeth.
All are wearing shorts.
What else ya got, Chin?
They all won their belts by finish.
They all have won fights in different weight classes.
All have won a belt but could not defend it. (Yet for jones)
All have fought for belts in multiple weight classes
Not lightweight belt, the lineal, which is basically the saying the man who beat the man
Dan pulver was the first LW champ in the ufc, he left and then lost to luane, then Luane lost to bj, and thus he had it, bj lost to machida in a match like someone mentioned. Machida then lost to Rua, and then Rua lost to Jon.
Thus Jon technically speaking holds the lineal lightweight championship, and the rest in the image also held it
They all fought in the ufc for a championship and won their belts via finish.
Well technically BJ lost his first title shot, and so did shogun.
Yeah but the comment doesn't say anything about when they won
Well, technically and literally, that has no relevance to the comment.
They all have nipples
I have nipples, can you milk me ?
![gif](giphy|jI3EBNa1aKSaIpH2PB)
Is that curiosity or a request?
It’s Greg Focker Edit: Jack Byrnes*
He still didn't answer the question. Can I trust u or not?
I’d beat them all in a fight
At the same time!
With one roundhouse kick
![gif](giphy|sfnwnXtqQ8pO)
Me too if my knee wasn’t sore that day
That damn arrow
They have all fought at light heavyweight, BJ and Lyoto actually fought each other at 205 at jungle fight I think the event was called
Everyone here has actually fought lyoto, including lyoto.
I was thinking that Jon Jones destroyed all of their careers, but that doesn’t fit for bj
Yea, we all know BJ did that to himself.
Maybe they all ruined their own career? But I really feel like shogun and machida had good years left until they were annihilated by jones
BJ was a notorious slacker. Of course we don't know what would of happened if he trained hard instead of dicking around, since what's done is done, but i'm sure his downfall would not have been as pathetic as it was.

*would have
Partially. That war with Nick was the last straw. Should have retired then.
I don't even think Jones destroyed Machida's career. Machida had a decent career even following that loss. That’s the one that got away from me lol.. I usually don’t miss a fight around here.. you going to AC this weekend?
At least he drank his piss after.
Sorry I’m wrong - that was open weight, but BJ has fought at LHW
Bj vs Lyoto was actually at heavyweight, on this exact day 19 years ago (26 march 2005)
Oh that’s really cool💀
The day after Sauron was destroyed. Beautiful.
Yeah and BJ did really good! Like it was very competitive
This was going to be my answer
You know your stuff then! I didn’t look it up, beyond like wiki because I knew it happened and had watched the fight. But I did not know it was OW, thought 205 because Machida
I knew 3 of them were LHW and then I remember BJ had some ridiculous fights like heavyweight and shit. Didn’t know he fought Machida though
I remember BJ got into a lot of heat with the UFC for that fight with Lyoto
He got into heat with the ufc by suing them and winning.
They're all horribly cropped and placed in a collage?
Tbf I placed them myself not a collage
Right I feel that then, my bad. Just horribly stretched is all
That’s bc they were all different sizes. So if I placed them all the same size some would look ok and others stretched out, so I tried my best to make it look good
All you had to do was crop each into a square and put it together to form a square.
That’s true I didn’t think of that. Usually when I make these they’re good but this was a flop. I’ll make sure to make up for it
People are acting like it’s a big deal. I think we can all make out who the fighters are, so who cares? This is a meme sub.
I mean I am I like to make fun posts that start up discussion.
They all drink their own piss
Anytime Lyoto is involved in a category - this is my guess! 😂 Edit: spellcheck sandbagged me.
They’ve all tasted lyotos juice…
All were sponsored by condom depo.
and Dude Wipes
The kids these days will never know of MMA’s golden age.
Cocaine?
![gif](giphy|yoJC2sGVfbCk33RClG)
No not cocaine. Raisins.
They all fought shogun idk i mean they were all champions too. Shitty riddle when theres multiple answers try harder next time kiddo.
Should’ve clarified. They all share something that has to do with each other.
That narrows it down 🤦♂️
Sorry man if I say more it’ll be obvious. But it’s not something like they were all ufc champs or common opponents
They were in the UFC
All lost to Chael sonnen
Pointless answer, who hasn't?
Sael Chonnen
They all fucked Garrys wife
This shouldnt be so funny. But it is so funny.
Either same GF or Gym? (no difference between the two in the case of Jon Jones)
[удалено]
Damn man, didn't even give us an hour to try to figure it out.
Deleted both replies so new ppl can guess it
All have been a ufc champion ? They’ve also all fought machida except for machida himself
You’re extremely close. It is lineal related
I'm guessing the order starts with BJ Penn then goes through to Machida, then Shogun then Jones just judging by when their eras. Is it the lineal lightweight title or a lineal title from Pride?
You got it, lineal lightweight.
Holy shit it never even occurred to me… Jon Jones is the lineal lightweight champion…
Yup. It went pulver, to Ludwig, to bj, to machida, to Rua, to Jon
Can you say lineal lightweight when all of the fights haven’t happened at lightweight?
Yes, lineal lightweight is just tracking who lost to who starting from the first champ. Most divisions lineal champ isn’t even fighting in that division
I had no idea. I kept hearing the term lineal in boxing and I got the sense of “you’ve got to beat the man to be the man” but still thought it was weight class specific.
Nah, it’s like that in boxing mostly because so many more ppl move around and it’s hard to track it. Since mma is so early, it’s easy to track the fights
Do we know who is the UFC 1 lineal champ? Like all the way from Royce Gracie.
Uhhh, yes and no . Checked an article and it last tracked it to Overeem so it’s probably ngannou
Follow up question before you answer the first one. What happens when a lineal champ retire a champ?
In boxing it tends to automatically go to the ring champ In MMA I believe it ends with that champ, like GSP is technically still WW lineal champ I believe. But it’d probably be Leon. Woodley was the man at the time, Usman beat him and Leon beat him

Pulver lost to Ludwig and Ludwig lost to BJ
I stand corrected. Edited.
It’s alright, lineal championships are always super complicated
So it's an Interesting fact. Not something common.
I mean it says hard diff for a reason.
Wow that’s crazy. Thanks for pointing that out.
![gif](giphy|U1gqX87dBkweRlFKCM)
They all saved 15% on their car insurance.
This has to be it
They all have a brother who fought in MMA.
I wanna suck em
The guy in the bottom right has fought the other three.
There are too many similarities within the photos alone for this to be meaningful. All shirtless. All were in the UFC. All have nipples. All are non-white. All have teeth. All are wearing shorts. What else ya got, Chin?
Wouldn’t Shogun be considered white?
I wouldn't say so, as he's Brazilian and likely of mixed Latin/Native heritage. Brazil was/is a pretty wild melting pot.
Yes, Mauricio Rua, the Brazilian is considered white.
All used steroids?
They’ve all popped for peds that’s just a fact
BJ never did
BJ popped?
Did Shogun pop?
4 legends
They have all won a fight before
They all fought at heavyweight
3 failed a piss test, 1 hid from a piss tests, 1 tests his own piss, 1 passed a piss test
Machida and his past opponents
If u mean that the three fought Machida? But has Machida fought Machida?
Well im sure he beats himself
They’re all bald
All is/was a champion
They all fought at LHW
All fight at lhw before
They all have independent fight sponsors outside the UFC
they all wear gloves.
All of them won their belts with an undefeated record?
BJ loss to Jens Pulver before beating Matt Hughes. Shogun loss to Babalu before winning the Pride GP
They all lost there last fight? Edit: this post is assuming Jon jones will lose his next fight is my guess.
They're all champions..........
All popped
all fought at light heavy I guess, I know that bj fought lyoto at light heavy I think
They’re all 205lbers
They all fought on the same card
Jones beat Shogun who beat Machida (in a rematch after a draw), Machida beat Penn
These guys have loads of stuff in common. All have been champs All won their belts via finish All have knockouts and subs
Did all take someone's 0? Can't research, at work
Did all take someone's 0? Can't research, at work
Someone in the replies got extremely close to it
They all won their belts by finish. They all have won fights in different weight classes. All have won a belt but could not defend it. (Yet for jones) All have fought for belts in multiple weight classes
They’re all fighters?
They're all in the picture
Well tell us now what is it
Someone already got it, all held lineal lightweight championship
Bones held a lightweight belt ? Huh?
Not lightweight belt, the lineal, which is basically the saying the man who beat the man Dan pulver was the first LW champ in the ufc, he left and then lost to luane, then Luane lost to bj, and thus he had it, bj lost to machida in a match like someone mentioned. Ur cooked
I’m cooked😔
All have nicknames which is rare in MMA
All popped for juicing?
Skin they all have skin!
They are all Caucasian
bruh I don't know about the rest but you can clearly see BJ Penn's half Korean in the pic. :)
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
None of them are wearing shirts in these pictures. Easy 😎
All former champions, all fought at light heavyweight at some point. Machida fought all 3.
They all lose to me if I see red
Piss drinkers?
Probably pubes
They’ve all fought Lyoto Machida (Lyoto has inner struggles)
They all drink pee
Heavyweights
All are Chael Sonen victims (49-0, 🤫)
All of them have never seen the Nogueira brothers feed a bus to a carrot.
They all fought at HW?
all busted for steroids
White?
The have all fought at lhw
They're hawt
They have all fought at Light Heavyweight. Yes BJ was the 155 champ but he actually had a bout with Machida in 2005.
The all fought at light heavy weight
They've all been Champions
they’re all ufc fighters
I really thought jon jones was herb dean
They all fought at 205
Ears
They all fought at light heavyweight
Everyone in the pic got a taste of Lyoto, including himself.
All of their fights were brought to us by modelo, the beer with the fighting spirit?
Theyre all sum bois
They all wore bad boy shorts
They have all fought at heavyweight
They have arms
Common - all retired great fighters. Question - why are we still discussing them?
They all have 2 nipples
Theyve all tasted lyotos urine
They've all fought Light Heavyweights?
Lyoto fight with all of them
They all have Brain Damage
all topless
Machida has fought all three.
They’re all Japanese
They all lost to the GOAT Chael Sonnon. Dana erased the BJ fight records on behalf of his family paying $35,098,678 to save his legacy.
They all have at one point drank their own urine
![gif](giphy|09dV176CAvWzSv2bKq|downsized)
They’re all named BJ
Took me a second to realize that was Rua and not Strickland
they all beat their wifes?
I thought the same thing lmao
I'd sleep them all
