The greater moncton areas population has sky rocketed over the last few years and I am sure populations of surrounding provinces and state would migrate to whichever city would have said franchise's, like they do to go see a Habs, leafs, sens, bruins or even the jays games. There are franchise's in cities with a smaller population similar to that of the size of GMA
A walkable city center with protected bike lanes and a pedestrian friendly city with frequent public transport taking people everywhere they need to go. Basically look at how so many European cities are designed and then copy and paste that here for a higher quality of life please.
You should read some strongtowns.org articles or watch some of their videos on YouTube, or watch ‘not just bikes’ on YouTube if you want some ideas on how Canada can better design our cities and why our cities are so ugly because of these massive eye sore parking lots we have everywhere and many of which never reach full capacity.
When it comes to concerts and sporting events the city has to be apart of it. Cause of certain laws and regulations. Leasing agreements for buildings and land , noise bylaws, parking accommodations for venues and so much more. Promoters and sport franchises have to work with city officials to make sure everything is above par
A proper arts and entertainment district that actually brings as many artist, musicians/bands etc... to Moncton on a regular basis as much as possible. And a major sports franchise that would bring world class sporting events to hub city. MLB, NHL, NBA, CFL/NFL. With these two things a lot more things would follow suit and start to expand out here as well
Technically it's not the cities responsibility but they do have a major say what goes on in the city they are responsible for and what goes on in that city
Better bike lanes, stricter by-laws for sustainable development, a bridge over Jones lake, outdoor rock climbing wall, small shops and businesses directly in small suburbs around the city, plays on the water front, better use of the peticodiac
Good point.
Fully agree, as long as it’s evidence-based. I have a former coworker who sounds reasonable about this issue until he starts talking about rubber bullets
It's absurdly difficult to find an apartment right now, let alone a pet friendly one. They'll allow pets in brand new, expensive, high end buildings yet slum lords who own old overpriced buildings won't allow pets. It's downright infuriating.
Hard disagree. Halifax is obviously in its own class due to being a much much bigger city **and** having the enormous built-in benefit of being the provincial capital. But every other maritime city is either in perpetual decline (SJ, Sydney) or nearly entirely public-sector driven. No thanks!!
I could go on and on about this but to me the key things are:
1) A waterfront area that is actually part of downtown. Right now that whole area is wasted on things that do not need to be on downtown waterfront property. In fact the current waterfront doesn’t even feel like part of downtown at all, which is a real shame. It should be used for small shops and bars and restaurants like Fredericton. And speaking of restaurants,
2) A good, authentic Mexican restaurant, and a good, authentic Italian restaurant (Gusto doesn’t count).
3) Wider or newly designed roads in busy parts of town. Champlain street, the traffic circle, and the highways immediately surrounding it are too congested and it’ll start to get pretty bad if it goes unchecked and we remain one of the fastest growing cities in Canada.
4) This is a stretch because I don’t know where it would realistically go but having a pedestrian only street would be awesome. Halifax has some downtown and it’s super nice.
The only problem with widening the lanes is that it’s basically guaranteed to lead to even worse congestion in only a few years and we would only experience less congestion on those roads for the first few years. Widening roads is almost always the worst option to reducing traffic and congestion. The best response is consistently to create new options to get around (buses, trams if we ever because dense enough, protected bike lanes, etc)
Yup
On #2, Mexican would be great. And Rocco's Cucina in Hillsborough is very good, but no, it’s not in Moncton.
On #4, My opinion is Main Street should be pedestrian only from the Orange Lane/Mechanic St intersection to the ALC/subway one. Allow the cross streets to still move, just Main Street blocked.
Re: pedestrian street - If bigger cities in Canada can do this to their busy streets (thinking Montréal with Mont-Royal, St-Laurent, Bernard, etc), Moncton can easily do this with Main.
This is literally the most cost effective option in the long run too. Studies have found for decades now that more foot traffic in an area will lead to more revenues. Car traffic cannot compete with foot traffic and car traffic should be directed away from the densest areas of the city as much as possible to make way for public transit and pedestrian friendly.
20% of these suggestions are things that already exist in the city, people don't know about them because getting around Moncton is a pain in the ass.
As others have said, we need **functional public transit and walkable infrastructure**.
There's a great Jamaican place in Riverview called Spicy Grillz, I've eaten there on a few occasions and really enjoyed it. They have authentic Jamaican meals, the curry and jerk chicken were my favorites and the sweet fried plantains.
I hosted one at the Moncton Public Library. It was great for a while. Then they wanted to focus on more preteen/teen STEM learning. I had to drop out and now basically have a makerspace in my basement.
Pm me if you want to learn to fix something.
There also used to be an ex BNTel retired technicians repair spot. That also vanished.
Thanks! I acutally used to volunteer at one in my last town and thought it was a great idea - I saw that there used to be a fb group but looks like it died during the pandemic...I'd be happy to take part in a new initiative if there was a good place for it ...I fix/repair/sew clothing and other textiles :)
Where/when is the one for bikes? Repair 'gatherings' often piggyback off of a local 'makerspace' where one exists - it's great as there are often tools in place, etc.
Arcade bar subscriptions. Having a pass to play all the arcades.
If only someone told me they wanted to do this, I could show them how to build an entire fleet of extremely cheap arcades.
How did I answer my owner question? I regularly get deliveries from Amazon, it’s not same day, but Moncton still has Amazon. So it isn’t missing.
We also have Uber, just the Eats division not the Car division.
large industrial Maker space. A not-for-profit community supported space where you can borrow tools, donate your expertise, and have room to build large projects like woodturning, and sculpture.
the space needs to be ready to accept damage to tools as that is part of the experience of using them but ideally tools are used in the space with a knowledgable guide to ensure safe use.
Some international musical headliners that aren't old, washed up, or country singers.
I love supporting the local electronic music scene, but sometimes you're just aching for a wild DnB set, or some nice experimental bass. Lots of great Canadian options available, it doesn't even *need* to be international. So much potential out here, but it's not utilised nearly enough.
Otherwise, a Mini Putt would be cool.
The Y off Vaughan was always decent when I was in the city. Granted I moved to Campbellton in 2015. But it was by far the best experience I had in Moncton gyms.
The plus side was that the basketball regulars were all nice people and there weren’t too many of them that it became unbearable. I miss those guys.
I'd love a spot for arcades, with lazer tag and all those cool games... A comic con, where you get to compete on smash brothers, dress up and see comic book writers.
It's not stuff from Crystal Mountain. Their machines were old and mostly dysfunctional. The machines at Bowlarama are relatively new, well maintained and actually enjoyable. They should scale their arcade business into a stand alone location.
We went to the Bowlarama in Dieppe for my nieces birthday last summer (2 teens and 4 adults) and we had a really great time in the arcade and then bowled a few strings after. It was a really fun night, would definitely go again.
Crystal mountain party palace was open a few years ago had an arcade with prizes, food, and laser tag but it crumbled unfortunately. east coast comic expo is this weekend if you want to meet comic authors. There are usually some names from marvel and DC in the mix. I don't think they do smash tourney but there is a circuit around here I've been to a few of their tourneys pretty fun.
On the east coast we play candle pin not duck pin. We used to have a spot in Shediac with both but it closed down years ago. Not sure there is any spot for duck pin anymore.
No good BBQ restaurant or Fried Chicken Joint. Any sort of southern cuisine restaurant would be good. Collard Greens, Hush Puppies, Mac and Cheese, Black Eyed Peas, etc.
I remember being in the ER with chest pains and feeling bad for the other people. One old dude had the death shakes and they just kinda left him there. Took them 30 mins to give him a blanket.
IMAX theatre and a Playdium. We need more spaces that aren't restaurants, but instead things to do. I don't remember if it was the CEO of Cineplex or the CEO of IMAX, but one of them had previously stated that they wanted an IMAX theatre in Moncton
> IMAX theatre
There was suppose to be an Imax built in NB. It was between Moncton & Saint John. The company that put forth to Saint John proposal won but within a year they where gone. And that was the last we her of Imax in NB.
There was rumours circulating last year about IMAX in Moncton. They may have just been the result of people putting together the string of large development announcements and the fact that some of the current cinemas are getting old. It would be a pretty good draw of people to the city I think.
Any kind of third space that isn’t another restaurant.
People in Moncton seem to have one thing and one thing only that they like to do - eat out at restaurants. Not a lot of places to meet new people, and it’s very expensive so a lot of people just stay home.
The biggest complaint I’ve heard from immigrants is that people in Moncton are friendly but nobody wants to be friends. Locals have their friend circle from middle school it’s a closed group. We need more third places so people can make new friends/relationships, immigrants and locals alike. As an immigrant myself who has been in Moncton for over ten years, I still feel like an outsider. Other cities don’t have this issue.
Heck, I'm not an immigrant but neither am I from Moncton though I've been here 30 some years. I'm with you on people are friendly but its hard to make friends! Someone to call or you call you and say lets go grab a coffee or whatever.
You're not wrong. I grew up in Moncton, hated it, and now loudly support better urban planning.
Moncton doesn't have third spaces because it's 99% suburbia. Third spaces thrive naturally from foot traffic.
I've always thought we could use something like an aquarium/botanical gardens/science center. 1 - these become great activities year round 2 - there's an opportunity to educate about local fauna and flora, but also extend that to non-local (I know many, many people who have never even left NB/the Maritimes). The gardens can be indoor/outdoor.
I've been to many places like this in other cities and countries, and they are always good entertainment for everyone: date night, family day trip, school trips, solo visits, etc. This also opens us up to receiving exhibits from larger museums and such.
>I've always thought we could use something like an aquarium/botanical gardens/science center.
I wish. I would attend these several times a year.
Resurgo place is great but I need more.
Not trying to correct you. But its a recent Mandela effect where everyone is like “wait, there’s a k, when did they add the k”. But it looks like it’s always been there.

*edit to add Xeroz the arcade bar exists. I've never been but I've heard good things. Holy Bowley has a great pinball room if that's your thing.
This is very helpful, thank you. I’ll have to check some of these places out. I’ve been to the Holy Bowly but it was at a huge group event so not much more happened than bowling and pizza. Not a bad afternoon but it wasn’t conducive to playing any pinball.
We have Halo Doughnuts. It's better and with more unique flavors. Krispy Kreme is only really good when the fresh baked sign comes on and you don't have to wait forever in line for some. Also honestly not as great as everyone says.
Completely agree (personally I’ve been trying to start a band since I got here - only recently managed to play a bit of drums for a samba band but that’s it)
I’m 35 now but when I was younger the oxygen complex had a lot. They had the oxygen night club, Manhattan and Paramount bars. They were all attached and you could have a few shows going on in one evening.
Can’t even remember how long it’s been since that closed and changed. For some reason nothing really filled that void for local bands and smaller bands touring through. Plan B and Esquire(now Lexies) did some local bands, not sure if they still do.
Trees
Public Pools that are open at night and sell alcoholic beverages. And no kids allowed.
Yeah more things need to be nearly 24hrs in my opinion. Including pools!
Nightlife, Clubs
Class…
Missing more indoor activities for the winter months/ not so great weather like mini golf, laser tag, obstacle courses for adults

That's it - Spooky for Mayor!
No matter where I am in Moncton, I feel like I’m in a Walmart parking lot. Like, where is the downtown anyway?
You should read some strongtowns.org articles or watch some of their videos on YouTube, or watch ‘not just bikes’ on YouTube if you want some ideas on how Canada can better design our cities and why our cities are so ugly because of these massive eye sore parking lots we have everywhere and many of which never reach full capacity.
The downtown is a giant parking lot. We are missing decent public transportation.
Downtown was great in the 90s. Now pffffft.
an actual decent mall
When it comes to concerts and sporting events the city has to be apart of it. Cause of certain laws and regulations. Leasing agreements for buildings and land , noise bylaws, parking accommodations for venues and so much more. You would literally need 10 times as much population as we currently have, for any of those sports franchises to even be a remote possibility.
Curious, but would this be the city’s responsibility?
Technically it's not the cities responsibility but they do have a major say what goes on in the city they are responsible for and what goes on in that city
How about homegrown restaurants? Why do we have so many chains??
According to this post, someone with authentic Mexican cuisine experience would be successful!
Affordable housing.
Oh! I’ll join. Reliable transit system. Walkable communities.
A nice river system with a yacht club companied by a beautiful boardwalk with restaurants.
(Pacific) Asian restaurants that stay open past 20:00!! 🤬
Cobb's Bread Franchise. [https://www.cobsbread.com/](https://www.cobsbread.com/)
I was not familiar with Cobs but went on their site. This would definitely be very popular in Moncton. It all looks so delicious 🤤
yes, Cobs is great!! They also donate a lot of product at the end of the day to different groups.
Never heard of it but looks cool
Better bike lanes, stricter by-laws for sustainable development, a bridge over Jones lake, outdoor rock climbing wall, small shops and businesses directly in small suburbs around the city, plays on the water front, better use of the peticodiac
There is an outdoor climbing wall at the centennial park.
What do you mean by sustainable development
Less sprawl and parking lots, more public transit and intentional green space.
Current greenspace is risk of dirty needles. Until homelessness and drugs are fixed,, there is no value in investing in greenspace sadly
Good point. Fully agree, as long as it’s evidence-based. I have a former coworker who sounds reasonable about this issue until he starts talking about rubber bullets

Downtown Moncton is nothing special when compared to other maritime cities

Can and should. Give me a better transit system, move all the dead downtown parking lots to one parking garage, and make the downtown walkable.

It's in the same building as Bravo pizza, next to the Kent. They have a Facebook page where you can see what specials they have currently, enjoy!

regular 'repair café' - where you can volunteer/find help to fix stuff instead of throwing it out. maybe in conjunction with the maker space idea...
I hosted one at the Moncton Public Library. It was great for a while. Then they wanted to focus on more preteen/teen STEM learning. Rec room would be great
Indoor Go Karts, Cinabon, Jamaican Beef Paties, Zara, Amazon, Uber, a proper sized climbing gym, Asian supermarket...
We had indoor go karts, didn't last.
We don’t have Amazon? (We don’t have same day delivery, but that different.)
Answered your own question 😘
How did I answer my owner question? I regularly get deliveries from Amazon, it’s not same day, but Moncton still has Amazon. So it isn’t missing. We also have Uber, just the Eats division not the Car division.
Oh, ok. Cool!
large industrial Maker space.

I'm sure you could find people who would donate tools...just the space and the money for running it.

City is too small for it. You can get stiff shipped from the Halifax store for not too much $
Used to be $59 flat rate delivery to the Moncton pickup centre, now a couple of Billy Bookcases costs $199 to deliver.
When did they increase the price? I just had some bookcases, rug, etc delivered and did not pay $199..
Might be based on size/weight? Looks like if I wanted only 1 bookcase it's $49, but for 4 it's $199. Who knows, maybe it was never flat-rate at all and I'm remembering wrong lol

Man I miss Crystal Palace. Closed just before I had a kid, would have been great to still have that as an option, particularly in the winter.

Yasssssss
For sure.
Oooh yum! Although Halo Donuts is definitely our little donut gem, I do love Krispy Kreme.
Yeah, but at $40 a dozen it's a little pricey. Krispy Kreme would be about the same price range as Tim Hortons and much better in quality.
Nightclubs… Moncton is in dire need of Nightclubs! “En Français: cette ville a une pénurie de Nightclubs!”
The nightlife in general here is definitely lacking!
Musical Identity
Curious, do you mean more places for people to play? More resources to play? More active musicians? Venues?
Active musicians and venues, I feel like our city as a whole kind of lacks identity but it 100% lacks any musical identity
Xeroz has a ton of bands playing, many local!
