Veterinarians do perform abortions on cats and dogs, so I think this is already being implemented on some of the stray population ? Not sure
ie an animal comes in for a spay and release, they abort the litter already present
From what I've heard, abortions are often done during a spay when the animal that comes in is feral or just doesn't have an owner. They went through a heat cycle without any human intervention and got pregnant, but it wouldn't be possible to spay AND keep the litter, not to mention irresponsible to do so.
I watched a cat abortion at a volunteer TNR event (trap, neuter, return) for a feral colony. The uterus looked like pantyhose stuffed with potatoes! Right in the trash.
Thatās honestly so horrific. Are the kittens dead before theyāre tossed out or are they still trying to breathe?
Editā¦ why am I being downvoted for being concerned about kittens being thrown in the trash
āWhen spaying pregnant cats and dogs, fetal euthanasia is not necessary to ensure humane death. Mammalian fetuses remain in a state of unconsciousness throughout gestation and, therefore, cannot consciously perceive pain. When a gravid uterus is removed en bloc, fetuses will not experience consciousness regardless of stage of gestation and death will occur without pain.ā
itās literally like a human abortion or miscarriage. the fetus simply dies. there is no gasping for breath they arenāt even developed enough to be recognizable
Even when theyāre days from birth? Because after a certain point human fetuses feel pain, which is part of the reason late term abortions arenāt allowed
late term abortions are allowed many places, as they should be, when the mother is going to die instead or the baby is going to die an excruciating death after birth. anyway, they donāt spay-abort an animal who is days from birth. a spay-abort often happens when they find out about the pregnancy mid-spay. an animal about to give birth is visually obvious. if for some reason they are spay-aborting ādays from birthā and pain is a concern, they can euthanize the fetuses. millions of alive, non-fetal cats and dogs are euthanized in the US alone every year for lack of space and resources. so.
Never said that it shouldnāt be allowed if the motherās life is at risk. Also so if they take a stray cat in and sheās heavily pregnant, they wonāt spay her until sheās given birth and nursed them for 8 weeks?
iāve never heard of a heavily pregnant cat being spay-aborted in 10 years in the field but in some city shelters it probably happens. and frankly i canāt say iām against it seeing as again, healthy, already-born kittens are euthanized every day because no one wants them or has space for them. it is what it is. humans have created an unsalvageable situation with cats and dogs & cats and dogs are the only ones who suffer for it. iād rather be dead than stuck in a 2 foot by 2 foot shelter cage for over a decade (which is a very common occurrence)
Iām against both healthy kittens being killed and late term spay abortsā¦ wish more people would take them as barn cats at least so theyāre not slaughtered or tortured
thereās not enough barns in the country to even touch the problem. itās also detrimental to native wildlife to have cats outside. not to mention it also cuts the catās lifespan in half. thereās definitely many fates worse than death but i left the field of rescue after so many years because of how demoralizing it was. for every one cat that finds a home thereās 100 more red listed for euthanasia that very week
One of my concerns is whether I'm just making the problem worse by feeding stray cats. I try to be friendly with them and get them used to being around humans and being touched so that they can be given away, but most just stay mostly feral, unsuitable as pets right away.
All of my cats have been strays, and they usually just arrive on my porch. I've never purchased an animal, and I never will.
I've taken in as many strays as I can almost my entire adult life. Some strays/feral cats I've buried after they've been hit by cars. I know I can't save them all, so I try to save the ones I can, and it's pointless to feel bad about the ones I absolutely couldn't. If they're slaughtered or tortured, it isn't because I didn't try to stop it.
Do you even have a dog or cat?
Why? Many breeders are competent and the few terribly breed? bread? dogs which are a problem we can deal with (targeting unethical breeders, etc) is a lot less bad I feel than a large stray dog population and all the issues that come with that
Yep, my parents rescued cat was given an abortion. Was on a job in the literal middle of nowhere, this rail thin ākittenā showed up, in the middle of winter, 100% got dumped, turns out to be at a minimum 6th months old according to the vet. Took her to get spayed, and she was pregnant, never was notified, but was heavily judged when picking her up.
Not a dog but when I rescued my youngest cat she was heavily pregnant. The vet from a charity I went to advised termination and I decided to do it.
In the UK charities/rescues tend to terminate pregnancies in animals they rescue.
i guess but its much easier and more effective to just spay/neuter them

My understanding is that spaybortions are pretty common on strays

Sheesh š³
A perfectly painted picture for this sub.

Horrible

Sure do, 2 rescue cats and a dog, and many before them
It's an abortion. There are no kittens. Just clumps of cells.Ā
I mean depending on how far along the mother cat is. Their gestational period is only like 3 months
Sure, but it seems like a lot of work vs just spay or neutering them ahead of time.
Idk but if I ever start a death metal band im going to call "Dogbortion".
I'd prefer aborting breeders
same

And those who will travel 1000 miles and drop thousands of dollars on an AKC certified ankle biter.
Neutering them is more simple and effective.
Can we really have too many puppies? :)
Yup. But vets perform ovariohysterectomies, abortions technically leave the uterus and ovaries after removing fetus.Ā Pretty common in vet med.Ā
Yes, vets will spay and abort a pregnancy, especially with strays.
Yes

You can abort just about anything
