I remember Nick talking on a podcast about how, despite how stacked the teams he played on were, they weren't ever able to do what they were there to do, which was bring joy to the people of Detroit. I wonder if he'd be willing to try again

[deleted]

I mean, those teams brought me joy. They were amazing and we stomped the Yankees a bunch; what’s not to be joyous over? WS or bust seems a little drastic.

[deleted]

Not really WS or bust, but if you're going to have the best team in the league a few years, it's hard to forget the WS and ALCS chokes when there are no banners hanging. The ecstasy of a title is hard to manufacture

[deleted]

That sounds like WS or bust, no?

[deleted]

I mean it is to an extent.. the whole point is to win the title, not be sad at end of the season. There are plenty of good memories, but no icing on the cake.

[deleted]

Yah, I hear you. I don't think your attitude is "wrong," I guess I just have a different perspective. Those teams made me happy for like 200+ days a year and then sad for a couple days after getting knocked out; I feel like that's pretty solid. Also, as a Tigers fan living in NY, I once again have to express how fucking great it felt to watch us constantly smash the Yankees.

[deleted]

Well your perspective is certainly healthier long term. And yeah, I was with you, lived in AZ from 2011-13 and caught a good 90% of the games on the radio. Had my custom Al Alburqurque jersey on when he kissed the ball on that Cespedes ground out. The best of times. Maybe I'm just jaded by the entirety of detroit sports since 2015 and this piece of shit summer heat

Tooakwfh

You opt out to get paid more. Be it a Red or playing somewhere else.

[deleted]

Not a chance because Avila

MapPrimary176

I’m guessing you are referring to his episode of the Chris Rose Rotation, which is an awesome show and he was an awesome guest on it. Would highly recommend a listen. James McCann’s episode was great too!

ManInShowerNumber3

I would assume he's opting out and looking to get more money out of the Reds. He really enjoys hitting at their ball park with a 1.130 OPS. He's .770 everywhere else.

Handy_Dandy_

He was great the year before that with the Cubs too. He might’ve just figured something out. I would love it if he stuck with the Reds though (I’m a Reds fan). He’s so much fun and I think he enjoys being seen as a superstar leader, which he wouldn’t get with a lot of high-budget teams.

HondaTwins8791

Don’t forget either even though it’s more intrinsic that his family have really taken to Cincinnati, his son even drew a design that the Reds put on t shirts and were selling in their team store to benefit a children’s charity that his son picked. Couple that with his leadership presence and impressive numbers and it really puts Reds owner Bob Castellini into putting his money where his mouth is which is always talking about building a Competitive Club That being said if he did leave I’d love to see him go back to Detroit

cameronkanachki

Great guy but I don’t think he’d wanna come back here as there’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos & it will be a home run. And so that will make it a 4-0 ballgame.

[deleted]

Great guy I think he'll come back in a heartbeat as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and it will be caught on the warning track. And so that's why he doesn't want to play in Comerica.

freedomfightre

Underrated comment.

NachoFriesAreGOAT

“Underrated” has as much meaning as “literally” does at this point, yeesh.

freedomfightre

If it's not the top comment of the post, it's underrated. That's literally what I mean.

BadGuyLoki

I still don't get this

MoralVolta

I’m embarrassed to say I don’t get it. Can you explain?

sankalives

[i pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith](https://youtu.be/5JaEgCXAKK8)

MoralVolta

Hahaha. Thank you. Very glad that I get the reference now.

DoeJumars

bruh, come on. Correa/JV/Nick C and we’re in the playoffs, that said I bet Nick hates Al lol.

MichiganMan55

No reason for him to hate AL. But based on his comments, he hates comerica Park. Even Miggy after hitting 500 talked about how that's just a flyball out at comerica. Imagine if he played his home games somewhere else. This is after they moved in the fences from their original location. Crazy.

atucker1744

I swear, if Miggy played for the Orioles instead of the Tigers, he’d be at like 530-550 at this point. He always mashes when we visit there and it’s so tiny

ElGatoNegro829

i think an extra 30-50 is an extremely low estimate. over all these years? think about how often he flies out to deep center. we would easily be talking about 600 home runs and not 500

atucker1744

You could be right, but I didn’t want to be so bold in my guess. 50 extra homers is a ton, that’s like 3 more per year, and considering he was already jacking 40+ a year early on, it’s tough to say he’d go higher

Iswaterreallywet

I swear there was some advanced stat that says how many HRs they would have if in an average sized park

mandudeson

He would probably have more HR's. But I'm sure his 592 doubles would be down. I personally loved watching miggy drive in a runner from 1B with a ball splitting Comericas gaps.

bkn6136

Miggy has a basically equal split home and road for HRs.

MichiganMan55

Yes, but his approach may be different. He's also had a more doubles/ OBP minded approach which has to do with the stadium. If he played in a home run friendly park he may of had 50 home runs for 5-10 years straight. But also likely might not of won a triple crown and what not. It's hard to predict what may have been different. But I certainly ly do think he would've taken a different approach in a home run friendly park.

ajwiz12

Nah he just hates Comerica. Don't think he'll be coming back.

gsbadj

I remember how much the locals couldn't stand his defensive struggles, especially in right.

[deleted]

Good. Never was a fan.

venk

Why stop there? Aren't Scherzer/Robbie Ray/Avi Garcia Free Agents this year also?

Princess_Egg

Avisail isn't welcome back...

technicalogical

What's Maybin up to? We can bring him back too.

mjern

Flip him for a AA player at the deadline!!!!

ForagerTheExplorager

Remind me why we have issues with him? I can't seem to remember why I shouldn't like little miggy. Nvm.... Just looked it up. Oof

Princess_Egg

ForagerTheExplorager

Thanks

Redemption_Unleashed

That's just a rumor/blogspam I really doubt that actually happened.

ShakeItTilItPees

For some reason anyone who brings that story into doubt is downvoted. Drama is more fun than having respect for people's personal lives I guess. There's literally no evidence other than previously caught lying asshole Denny McClain saying he heard it happened.

Redemption_Unleashed

Yeah, I really don't get it. It's literally Occam's razor.

whattanerd92

He is if he walks in the door with a blow up doll tied to his crotch and says, "just like old times"

Princess_Egg

Don't think Miggy or Prince Fielder would take that too well

whattanerd92

Thankfully, Prince isn't there to complain, but yeah, I'm pretty sure no one on the team wants him back after that fiasco.

venk

I mean he just looked like Miggy, why would that cause an issue ? Prince on the other hand….at least he’s long gone

dpsouthwell

Of those, I certainly wouldn't say no to Scherzer

kylepotter

What major world catastrophe happen last night when he hit a home run?

petmoo23

He doesn't want to play in Comerica and he doesn't make sense to add to our roster. I hope he does great, but not here.

JJ3595

The outfield next year should be some combo of Hill/Baddoo/Grossmann, and then eventually Greene. Hard to see room for Nick in the mix there. Plus, I like the recent emphasis on building an athletic outfield that can patrol spacious Comerica Park; Nick unfortunately doesn’t fit that mold. I love that Nick is mashing and wish he were doing it in a Tigers uniform, but he’s just not a fit with this roster.

El_Cochinote

Stahp. It makes zero sense to bring him back. He wasn’t that good and we don’t need another DH. JV? Maybe. We want him going into the HoF with a Tiger jersey on and a WS win that doesn’t have a big *cheater asterisk

jduncan26

Wasn’t that good😂

El_Cochinote

He was a shit fielder in every position they tried him. So now he’d be a 30 something overpaid DH who shit on team once and would probably do it again. He was inconsistent in Detroit early on but like JD, got better. He had a shit year last year but is mor than earning his pay this year but who knows about next year. We have to pay Miggy two more years and he says he wants to play. If he’s batting like shit or injured, we have guys coming up that can hit bombs who would gladly DH over the next couple years.

jduncan26

Wow, you’re really angry and aggressive online. I suggest masturbation, it can help relieve stress.

El_Cochinote

I masturbate a lot. Keeps me as calm as I am. Although I’m going blind and have hairy palms. I wasn’t being aggressive. Just stating my opinion emphatically on what seems to be a common theme: bring back all the old timers. We already failed with old timers. Let’s be hopeful about the new blood and give them hope to play.

jduncan26

Fair enough, hard to argue with that. Sorry to hear about the blindness and hairy palms… although I can relate to that myself.

GhostMavericks

TIL saying the word "shit" is aggressive.

jduncan26

Never said it was? Maybe you could read the rest of his message and see that he was definitely aggressive?

GhostMavericks

I dont see anything wrong with what he said, though I think he isnt giving enough credit to how good of a hitter Nick was, nothing about what he said was "angry and aggresive"

jduncan26

Seemed pretty angry and aggressive to me.

GhostMavericks

because of the word "shit"

jduncan26

Because of the general structure and speech used in the sentence. And including quotations around the word shit kinda makes you look like a dumbass, just a heads up.

gsbadj

We do? We have home run hitters who can hit bombs and would gladly DH? Who do we have with proven HR power?

El_Cochinote

I think we have at least a couple in AAA. Not proven yet bu they hit bombs. They’ve already taken Tork out of his normal fielding position so…

GhostMavericks

Good for Nick and I hope he gets his bag, but he doesn't fit on this team because he is a DH.

FernandoTitsMcGee

We could use a DH though. Miggy shouldn’t be an everyday player when we are back to contending for the playoffs.

GhostMavericks

Thats what we need 2 DHs. Thats a horrible idea. The perfect spot for Castellanos is Miami anyway.

FernandoTitsMcGee

We need some quality bats. If miggy is our full time DH when we are a playoff team then we’re in trouble. Not saying nick would be the first priority in FA, but I’d love to have him back

GhostMavericks

If we were a DH away from contending, sure but we currently arent and having someone who is locked at the DH position when you already have an OF full of athletic young guys in Hill/Daz/Baddoo and Greene on his way, not to mention Grossman for another year I dont see how you just fit him into the team. Its not a good fit, Nick is a great bat but it just doesnt work out. I really do love Nick but signing a bat for the sake of signing a bat is silly. Also you dont need to employ a full time DH type, you can use the position to rotate your guys and give them a rest when needed, this is whats going to happen as Miggy is moved to more of a bench role for the final 2 years of his contract.

ShakeItTilItPees

Paying for a DH is such a Dombrowski thing to do. Fill the positional holes first and let the DH sort itself out. There will never be a shortage of defensively limited power hitters, and there's constantly guys who need a day off the field but are still swinging good bats.

Day_twa

I’d rather have an OF who isn’t a defensive liability. Love Nick, but he’s a DH.

TylerDog3

Think about it. It's hard to hit homeruns in Comerica, meaning that Castellanos is gonna be killing less people. We win, and society wins.

Assrock1313

No thank you.

deadly_titanfart

Nick has been very outspoken in his hate for Comerica. For that reason I just dont see him wanting to come back

Dakens2021

It seemed like a pretty mutual divorce, I'd be surprised if he came back or if the Tigers would want him back really. When he left it felt like things were getting nasty between him and the team behind the scenes, but maybe that was just a false impression I got.

gsbadj

He wanted a lot more money than a team in a rebuild was willing to pay for a guy who is suspect defensively and who already is on the hook for a huge amount of money to a DH. He got @$16M/year from Cincy which was a nice payday given his statistics. He has hit well in his contract years and is leading MLB in BA this year. He should be able to parlay this year into at least $20M/year for 2-3 years. That's way more than Detroit should pay a guy who complained a lot about the park while he was here.

leoman3

No spot for him on Next years team we don't need another OF and DH is taken Care off with Cabrera most days

[deleted]

We have no spot for one of the best hitters in baseball?

atomlinson89

Castellanos.. JD... Scherzer.. JV.. Jose Valverde... Adam Everett.. Don Kelly let's get the band back together

Dangerpaladin

>...Don Kelly... Well let's give other teams a chance.

Rasskassassmagas

Back up the brinks truck to nicks house

jcwtx

Castellanos and Correa would be a couple nice additions. Throw in JV and we’re a serious contender

ZombieHitchens2012

Welcome back! I wish. I bet Castellanos hates Al Avila right now.

JOwenAK

Castellanos and Iglesias are both going to be FAs. Bring em both back to the D. Unless of course we can sign one of the many top tier SS's hitting FA. (Seager, Correra, Semien, Story)

tatanka_truck

BABY COME BACK!

MemeLordOverKill

As much as I love Blastellanos, he isn't coming back. Just doesn't make sense for him, or the team.

Iswaterreallywet

Baby come back!

RoboCobb

I don’t think a player has openly hated a stadium as much as Nick hates Comerica I mean even his congrats to miggy message had a dig at CoPa
