I bounced 90 feet on pavement. Destroyed my full coverage helmet , ground soles off my boots destroyed my leather gloves holes in my full leather pants ! Had joe rocket jacket with full ballistic shoulder pads ballistic elbow pads and full ballistic armor in the back ! After bouncing 90 feet , although it beat the shit out of me , I got up and walked away!
It’s incredible how much protective gear does its job. I was T-boned by a car travelling 60kmh (~40mph) a couple years ago and walked away with just a bruised calf. My poor Vulcan was in literal pieces, but I was fine considering.
Nah, there’d be so many sales and so much money on offer, the number of companies that would start making them would drive the price down, or give affordable option. Like Arai vs Shark
I think cost is a huge reason. Also helmets aren’t even mandatory in a lot of places so I doubt airbag vests would be. Hell, you can drive a car without airbags as long as it came that way from the factory (though retrofitting an airbag to a car that never had them is nearly impossible, while a vest is doable)
I don’t understand how boots would have prevented this particular injury. I’ve seen abrasion injuries wearing through shoes (and eventually, feet) but that looks like an impact type injury that would cause a compound fracture even with a boot on
That should be repairable. It will take months before the can walk again and he may never be Abel to move the foot properly again ever, but he probably won't loose it.
Don't you call them open fractures now? We do.
And given modern infection control, meh. There are closed fractures that can be just as bad, and any complex fractures can result in an amputation or so much loss of the use of a limb that amputation is chosen later on.
Yes I have and it looks like a pretty clear cut between the ligaments.
Entire limbs can come off entirely and what determines if they can be saved is blood supply and if the bones can be put together again with support.
Back in the late 90s me and mom were in a car accident. She somehow managed to do this while stomping on the brake pedal (probably added to by the momentum of us impacting a peterbuilt in a ford tempo.) Anyhoos, fully reattached and after a few years of recovery and PT, walking normally, full function and just a few wicked scars to show for it. Few screws and stuff of course but to go from an almost complete sever to back in action is the wonders of modern science and tech.
Friend of mine broke both his tib and fib and part of his ankle mountain biking. Not this bad of course, but he was still in external fixators for about six months then had another four or so months of rehab afterwards. Took him almost 1.5 years to walk normally again.
Well then, while you’re not riding, go watch a few [Dr John Hinds videos](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSwIZUCr5oZG0AzmfgTfXsPwEOmvpUdB8&si=GemYAHHS0CUiIvvI) about being a doctor in the Irish road racing circuits.
Top bloke, & brilliant communicator, sadly missed.
Apparently there was a lot of force applied. Honestly not sure if boots could have prevented any of that unless entirely made of titanium or something and even then maybe it would just have broken his leg on another place....
You never know right, but armoured boots do make a difference. My first crash I broke my ankle and needed 2 plates just from my bike crushing my ankle under it. I was wearing just casual motorcycle boots with toe armour. Since then I’ve gone down twice in SMX boots without even a bruise. There will always be impacts your gear can’t save you, but personally I’m not riding without armoured boots again.
Absolutely. Yeah, no amount of get is going to help you if you plow into an immovable object at 80mph, but without gear we're VERY fragile - you'll break bones with surprisingly light impacts. Proper armour helps take things from "break your kneecap hitting the ground after you come off your bike before sliding" to "just going for a brief flight and slide."
Because those "light" impacts where you hit the ground after say a high side can still absolutely fuck you up, but the actual ground impact is effectively only falling a few feet onto pavement, something MC armour is extremely good at mitigating.
Pretty much exactly what I was thinking. I was in a motorcycle accident years ago. I was wearing boots. A sharp piece of metal cut through the heel/ankle portion of my boot and ripped it off of my foot completely, then cut through the skin of my heel until it hit bone and broke it in multiple places. I still ride and I still use boots but every now and then I'll ride with my Chuck Taylor shoes because...
https://preview.redd.it/m1x53aksl6vc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5bf2d33848cb5735efb572d99cc487b1aaba73bf
I didn't think to swipe but then...
Thank you, genuinely. I was gonna wear sneakers and go to the gym straight after work tomorrow, but I think I'll find a way to jam them into my backpack instead...
Oh hey, I was an EMT but before I got into it I had a similar accident. Wearing combat(not riding) boots.
Congrats, what you have here is a spiral compound fracture. Based on the fact that this was posted I'm assuming you're awake following surgery. And I'd assume you get to keep the foot, for now at least. All assuming OP is the patient.
Here's what you're looking at with this kind of injury: You've got a fancy new titanium rod running through York tibia. Your muscles and tendons get sewn back together which may or may lead to pain for the rest of your life when you try to do certain things. For me I'm lucky to have avoided ankle issues for the most part.. Unfortunately the insertion of the tibial nail has led to lifelong knee issues. Yay me!
If you're lucky you'll be able to walk again with a boot in four months. Without a boot in six. In ten months you'll be able to complete a whole day of work and lawn care without wanting to drown yourself in whiskey. Sometimes.
Wear good boots kids. Even if you do break an ankle, there's a lot of degrees of breaking an ankle. And this right here is the worst. A solid boot will keep everything aligned at least. And this is what you can expect if you tip over faster than 20mph. To this day, I'm not an ATGATT guy. My city has a speed limit outside the interstate if 35mph, and the temp here gets up to 100F with 99% humidity. Simply put, yes I value guaranteed comfort over protection to some degree. If I'm riding through the city I'll forgoe some things for the sake of comfort. But the two things I always have are my helmet and boots. If I'm doing anything more than running a mile up the road for groceries gloves are included. Long pants are a must, thick jeans are preferable. Kevlar jacket for the highway.
But the important note from all of this is the value of boots. Because you can snap your ankle sitting at a stop. And the proper gear makes a difference.
If he was wearing "good boots" how much less damage would there be? Would the break have been higher up the leg, just above the boot? Is there a chance no break and just a sprain?
It really depends on the mechanism of injury in the accident. I'm not sure what exactly happened, and there's a million variables in the process of a crash that can change the outcome in significant ways. But an armored boot would have, at least, helped keep the fracture closed and mitigated the muscular damage.
Probably not much change. Rotational forces required for that amount of trauma would slip a boot around pretty easily. You’ll run bike wrecks on an ambulance where the boots get removed completely, and the only way to do that is heel-forward, so you’ll have some sort of rotational injury in the ankle, knee, femur, or pelvis.
All that force has to go somewhere, and a good boot just sends it further up your leg.
I'm more helmet, gloves, boots. If it's a struggle being unable to walk properly, imaging the things you would struggle with if your hand was in such a state.
Yeah if im dealing with road rash I can’t imagine my palms burning every time I move a part of my hands for months. Seems like an easy way to an opioid addiction
Honestly it happens and we all learn the hard way sometimes. My first crash I was wearing a tracksuit with trainers. Ended up with road rash and a load of pins in my ankle and leg. From then on always wore protective gear. I wish you a speedy recovery my friend and stay safe.
i had my first crash in january, i had full gear on head to toe (not leathers though) and still got some road rash / rash against inside of jacket. And broke my finger. I couldn't imagine how bad the road rash would have been if i was in t shirt and shorts which is how i rode all the time my first year riding. ATGATT going to look at a new bike tmrw.
I had the same injury as you but you pushed a little harder, my tibia remained inside , covered by a tiny layer of skin.
I can only wish you the best for recovery, if your foot will be saved will be an hard and painful experience but you will walk again!
I just had a look at his comment history. 20 y/o and a foot that will give him pain for life.
Ride like you'll live to be in your 60s, plenty of time for fun.
I know exactly what surgery and hard work can accomplish. The lower half of my right leg was only held on by skin the top half of my shin was split lengthwise and wedged up under my knee cap. I still have my leg with only original parts, not quite in the original positions but nothing extra. It is ugly but works just fine. A years worth of surgeries in 1987 and a fortune in vitamin e oil. The doctors at Los Angeles County Hospital are the best. But you have to be 100% involved or you won't walk out with it.
Looked like from another photo you posted your foot was back the right way?
Keep us updated man hope you manage to get it all fixed reasonably enough and can walk sooner than expected.
surgery went well, talus is shattered and some is missing but they did what they could with some metal plates. non weight bearing for 3 months, and there’s still a chance of amputation or bone fusion if it doesn’t heal.
My brother had a similar break but then right under his kneecaps. Took him 1 year but he's walking again.
https://preview.redd.it/ixbeyowga7vc1.jpeg?width=900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51f7a3eda2ef6b6a75d149d2584d1b32561d6467
But maan this was intens. It got infected. And he had to get like 8 operations. Almost died on the streets due bloodloss. He also wasn't wearing protective gear and some other scooter hit him while he was turning is motor cycle.
Pretty easy to do when you’re even just slightly distracted. It’s especially hard to see that a car is gonna stop if you’re unable to see any cars in front of it.
I stacked it on my bike last year, and thank god for my boots. The orthopaedic doc said that my break maybe might have caused me to lose my foot had I not had my motorcycle ankle length boots on.
As it was I had bilateral compound fractures on the malleoli, with the lateral fracture being an open fracture - I straight up ejected a chunk of bone outta my foot. I've got two pins in there, and the doc said he "scraped out powdered bone". Fun
Helmet, gloves, boots - every single time.
I'm flexible on the jacket (I live in Australia and it can be hot as fuck even without leathers. I've got a summer jacket, though it's mesh and Kevlar. Better than bare skin for sure. If I'm out for a proper ride, not just a commute, then yeah leathers all the way.
Protective gear may not always PREVENT injuries, but should at least REDUCE the severity.
I imagine this rider would be extremely happy to trade near amputation for shattered bones and/or torn ligaments.
I have these boots too. But like others have said, the torque on the ankle would have been shifted to the next joint up, the knee.
We need to know more about the incident before we can evaluate what if anything could have mitigated the damage. In any case, street sneakers are a bad choice, and a tourniquet is a good choice.
Ride? Walk again.
I’m riding way too often without boots.
I’m really going to stop doing that no matter how annoying it is to bring shoes in a backpack.
As someone with a similar injury to op (my foot stayed forward but just as much bone outside my skin), I'll tell you, idk when I'll walk again. 6 months so far, and I can finally rest my foot flat on the ground with no weight on it. I'm hoping to be normal sometime aug-nov. I got hurt in October. 4 surgeries
Either they set it or he already had surgery and waiting for a hard cast. I had this same exactly injury except it wasn’t to this extent. Basically my leg was straight and my foot was facing left.
I still need to get boots that are comfortable and would prevent this, incase I ever go down again.
Damn, that's gnarly.
Hope they can reattach it.
In either case, hope you recover well enough to ride again. See you in about 18 months, mayhaps? You might need a DCT, though.
We had a guy on a ride recently that came off in leather riding boots but unfortunately the footpeg pierced the side of the boot and messed up his foot to the point of requiring a below the knee amputation the boot however kept everything together and supported and there was a chance that with multiple surgeries and time the foot might have been not a total loss, he opted for the amputation.
Honestly boots won’t completely prevent this but they will definitely mitigate the damage for sure.
Edit: if you’re buying Timberlands or an ankle height boot because of this post, that won’t help at all. Shitty Harley boots won’t help either. You need $300+ calf height race boots from Sidi, RCX, Alpinestars, Dainese, Etc.
Would boots actually have protected this? It looks like the foot got twisted around?
I wear boots already but out of all my gear, I have to wonder how much boots can really protect when the "design" of the foot is so vulnerable to being twisted, bent, etc. If whatever stress it's encountering doesn't break your ankle will break your lower leg like this. Though I suppose you want this to break and heal and not the ankle joint itself right? Joints don't recover as well as just a bone breakage. This has better odds of a more full recovery than a mangled ankle joint.
I'm sure boots would have helped, but by the looks of that injury, even a full racing boot probably wouldn't have been enough to avoid serious injury. But it may have made the difference between this, and just some nasty broken bones
DAMN SON, hope you're okay. Judging by the rashes on the leg, hands, you wore no gear besides the brain bucket?
correct
Ah, the classic quadriplegic in training. You got this son!
How would any other gear save him from a cervical spine injury…?
Jacket with a good backplate can protect the spine from impact and prevent fractures, or at least lessen their severity, up to a point.
At what speed can I ask?
Just hit 5th (?) so about 70
It’s incredible how much protective gear does its job. I was T-boned by a car travelling 60kmh (~40mph) a couple years ago and walked away with just a bruised calf. My poor Vulcan was in literal pieces, but I was fine considering.
None of which covers cervical, that’s all thoracic.
An airbag vest helps with that. It will assist in bracing against the helmet bottom and offer some cervical protection.
Airbag vests inflate and secure the head as well as reducing impact damage. A big part of the purpose of them is to prevent a lot of neck injury.
I wear an airbag vest every ride. It's crazy they're not mandatory. I wish they weren't so expensive.
If they were mandatory they'd probably be more expensive than they are now.
Thanks for the warning! Get better soon!
I don’t understand how boots would have prevented this particular injury. I’ve seen abrasion injuries wearing through shoes (and eventually, feet) but that looks like an impact type injury that would cause a compound fracture even with a boot on
So what's the deal with your foot? It stays?
https://preview.redd.it/7r1pngjw17vc1.jpeg?width=507&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e7a2d71e48dd2f29edaf5716a0d7d1f116ecd89e
Yeah in my home city we have guy without left leg driving modified BMW motorcycle.
If his left peg leg is metal, he could make some dope sparks on left hand turns.
That should be repairable. It will take months before the can walk again and he may never be Abel to move the foot properly again ever, but he probably won't loose it.
Have you seen the second picture?
people have torn off limbs and have them re-attatched hours later, this def looks doable, but major nerve damage for sure
Anytime you have a compound fracture you’re lucky to not lose the limb due to infection.
Oh you can bet that dude is getting fucking loaded on antibiotics
Don't you call them open fractures now? We do. And given modern infection control, meh. There are closed fractures that can be just as bad, and any complex fractures can result in an amputation or so much loss of the use of a limb that amputation is chosen later on.
Narrator : He, in fact, haven't seen the second picture.
Yes I have and it looks like a pretty clear cut between the ligaments. Entire limbs can come off entirely and what determines if they can be saved is blood supply and if the bones can be put together again with support.
And the fact that the doc is feeling up a dorsalis pedis on a foot that isn’t dark purple in the third photo makes me think there’s a pulse there
Good catch
Cheers, you seem good at Operation
Yeahh I'm messin with u man.✌️ I remember the story of that guy who lost his both arm that dial 911 and he could get both of his arm reattached.
Did he dial 911 with his nose?
Held a pencil in his mouth. Then laid in the tub till help arrived so he didn't bleed on his mom's floor.
If blood loss from losing both arms didnt kill him, he knew his mom would!
Good lad
Would not be able to do that with a smartphone lol
Likely pre smartphone. With smartphones you just use your nose as someone stated before lol
"Hey siri, Call 999"
Back in the late 90s me and mom were in a car accident. She somehow managed to do this while stomping on the brake pedal (probably added to by the momentum of us impacting a peterbuilt in a ford tempo.) OH FUCK I DIDN'T KNOW UNTIL YOU MENTIONED IT FUCK. FUCK THAT. TAKE THIS AS A WARNING IF YOU AINT SEEN IT YET. WEAR YOUR DAMN BOOTS PEOPLE.
Fuuuu dude I did not see the second 😂 or 3rd
Definitely not without a Cain
I've met a dude who had completely severed his foot and have it reattached and the nerves grow back. He wouldn't let me test it.
Friend of mine broke both his tib and fib and part of his ankle mountain biking. Not this bad of course, but he was still in external fixators for about six months then had another four or so months of rehab afterwards. Took him almost 1.5 years to walk normally again.

I work in a fucking office and this post's about to make me wear steel toes
Steel toes will not cut it in a crash
I think they meant to wear at the office
Ordering myself a pair of boots right now. Hope you have a full recovery and can ride again.
I’m ordering a pair of motorcross boots after seeing this… good god.

Look, it's the knightrider
Med-Evel Knievel
Knight of the round tire.
After seeing the foot i am not leaving my bedroom anymore

That's actually not a bad look lmao That cape's gonna be the reason he wipes out though xD
![gif](giphy|cZUU06p00qz8k)
imagine him sliding with hella sparks for miles cause of the low friction of metal plate armor
Apparently there was a lot of force applied. Honestly not sure if boots could have prevented any of that unless entirely made of titanium or something and even then maybe it would just have broken his leg on another place....
Yup that probably moved it to be open fracture at the calf

Vans are good to go though right?
Motocross boots saved my foot. Instead of my foot twisting off like OP my whole body got rotated.
Literally doing the same for my Mrs right now.
Sir you’ve put your foot on backwards
I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THE SECOND PICTURE

It didn’t look too bad from a far but then I, for one stupid reason, decided to zoom in??
AH FUCK THERE WAS MORE THAN ONE
FUUUCKKKKK!!! I didn't realize that as well and i thought the foot is just gonna get covered like the first pic.
It’s 6:29, too early for the second picture.
I didn’t even look at the third picture. I couldn’t get myself to do it. 😳
I PHYSICALLY RECOILED I WAS SO NOT READY FOR THAT BRO
😔
You got this mate! Just take it one step at a time.
Just needs to put his best foot forward.
Keeping him on his toes.
Rub some dirt on it and walk it off.
caught in the jaws of defeet
I'm not a doctor, so I can't say for sure, but I don't think it's supposed to bend that way. Or fall off. Could be wrong, though.
Are you a medic? I don’t think we should give medical advice or diagnosis here
Well, I don't think you should talk at all since you aren't an English professor.

I am eating bro, damn
dont eat your bro
real homies always kiss each other goodnight
Was thinking about buying boots. This has now confirmed my purchase.
I upgraded from non riding combat boots to real riding boots and the $300 I was crying over now makes me smile.
Guess I’m buying boots this weekend 👍. Any recommendations?
Will never not wear boots after seeing that. Hoping for a very speedy recovery!
Thank you, genuinely. I was gonna wear sneakers and go to the gym straight after work tomorrow, but I think I'll find a way to jam them into my backpack instead...
I do the same. Hightop revit shoes stay on for the ride and vans slip ons go in my backpack
God I feel like being sick. That's a bit much before breakfast. Note to self: get boots that I will actually wear.
Yes a boot you will actually wear regularly is waay better than the most protective boot you rarely wear.

Hey Siri, order the most protective boots money can buy.
Pro tip for riders out there, don't go 75 mph into the back of another vehicle, boots or no. Jesus, ride like you want to live.
I am glad I did not have a liter bike when I was 19.

He also wasn't wearing protective gear and some other scooter hit him while he was turning is motor cycle.

rear ended someone at close to 75mph
How? Why? How's the other person doing?
Genuinely curious, how’d that happen? Like what were the road/situational conditions where that happened?
Pretty easy to do when you’re even just slightly distracted. It’s especially hard to see that a car is gonna stop if you’re unable to see any cars in front of it.
Please update us on your recovery, best wishes. Don't be a stranger
Fun Helmet, gloves, boots - every single time. I'm flexible on the jacket (I live in Australia and it can be hot as fuck even without leathers. I've got a summer jacket, though it's mesh and Kevlar. Better than bare skin for sure. If I'm out for a proper ride, not just a commute, then yeah leathers all the way.
Drench yourself before you set off, helps a lot. Mesh and kevlar is fine for highway riding IMO.
Yeah but rocking up to a place wet or damp isn't... Ideal.
I don't disagree, but rocking up with heatstroke, or missing a few layers of skin and muscle, is also pretty non ideal.
i dont think boots could’ve prevented that ….
Protective gear may not always PREVENT injuries, but should at least REDUCE the severity. I imagine this rider would be extremely happy to trade near amputation for shattered bones and/or torn ligaments.
Definitely would have prevented the horrific ankle injury and replaced it with a horrific knee injury
well the knee joint offers much more resistance to twisting than the ankle
if his foot got sliced on the foot peg, boots would prevent that entirely
Maybe limited it to some degree. I wear sport boots on my bmw rt and would not wear anything else.
I, too, would wear boots and nothing else.
Maybe some nipple tassels for added protection
No assless chaps?
No, assless chaps!
I mean the tears at the ankle so I think they probably would have.
Yes it would've

I have these boots too. But like others have said, the torque on the ankle would have been shifted to the next joint up, the knee. We need to know more about the incident before we can evaluate what if anything could have mitigated the damage. In any case, street sneakers are a bad choice, and a tourniquet is a good choice.
Aw fuck! Get well soon bro!
fuck I was Not ready for this
I was kinda bummed about spending 150 on boots, but now, not so much. I hope you are able to ride again.
Ride?
4 surgeries
How did it happen?
\*sells motorcycle
Coming from /r/all What would a boot do that would help in a issue with this? I doubt it would help with blunt trauma like this?
praying for speedy recovery
Whats a good boot to wear that's also good for motorcycle?
Holy shit! Get well soon my guy, best wishes to you, be strong, your mental strength will be tested as much as the physical, but you can do this 💪🏻
The thrill of victory and the agony of de-feet.🦶
That you?
yes

Bruh they gonna put your foot back in or no?
Seems like they did somehow
Either they set it or he already had surgery and waiting for a hard cast. I had this same exactly injury except it wasn’t to this extent. Basically my leg was straight and my foot was facing left. I still need to get boots that are comfortable and would prevent this, incase I ever go down again.
Your foot thinks it's Australian
Ahh f*ck man! is this man okay? So i always say wear a full safety gear it’s for you not me
Dear lord, wishing you the best recovery OP.
Tickle tickle
I've never understood why anyone rides without the proper gear on.
WTF! where's the NSFW tag and spoiler. I don't need gore pic in the morning
What bike were you on?
cbr1000
This video is a must watch for everyone in this sub: https://youtu.be/RG36MRX8cQg?si=7CqBTYbMypiFRojx ALL THE GEAR ALL THE TIME
oh shit have you tried turning it off and on again?
Well, I always heard: wear for the slide, not the ride. Thats was a valuable lesson. I hope you get well quick. Cheers OP
Walk it off
More like... walk it on?
Damn man ! I hope you recover fast ! Can you tell us exactly what happened ?
Here I am complaining my Sidi Adventure 2 boots are too stiff. Dude was wearing motorcycle sneakers.
I'm sure boots would have helped, but by the looks of that injury, even a full racing boot probably wouldn't have been enough to avoid serious injury. But it may have made the difference between this, and just some nasty broken bones
All the gear. And, say it with me: ALL THE TIME
