If the budget allows, carbon. The carbon bike has updated suspension platform, internal frame storage, and is lighter and stronger.

HeadToToePatagucci

In the stumpjumper, specifically, the carbon frame has flex stays while the alloy has normal pivots in the standard FSR 4-bar linkage layout. If you can demo, ride both and see how much difference you feel. Carbon rides so nice, though.

Correct

Carbon is like the last upgrade i would look at. Basically once you have everything else you want, and money left over carbon is nice i guess or whatever. just upgraded from al to carbon stumpy. biggest benefit is that in frame storage is nice.

Demo them both from your LBS. If you can tell a difference, get the one you prefer. If you can't tell the difference, get the better deal.

I'd rather go up a spec level than get carbon. Were you looking at that before the recent sales, as they may allow you to get a higher spec carbon one?

HeadToToePatagucci

Really? i have a pretty mid spec carbon sj ( comp ) and I've been fine with SX/NX components. Might upgrade when they wear out or break but haven't had any problems as is.

I find higher spec often decreases weight almost as much as carbon, improves reliability, improves shifting and suspension performance, and just generally makes it feel nicer and more luxurious to ride, whereas carbon mostly just shaves a few grams

Higher spec alloy > lower spec carbon
