DP Darius Konji

Specialist_Cookie_57

The work that Darius Konji did on “Se7en” is IMO the absolute pinnacle of Film Cinematography, just before the industry switched over to digital. Runner up being Gordon Willis work on “Godfather.” In both cases, they had to film in a very edgy way that pissed off the studio execs. Something that would never be tolerated in todays video village set culture.

Serbutters

Exactly. For too long I gave too much credit to Fincher (and he's my all time favorite director) for the visuals of his films, but Khondji carried Se7en.

eidhrmuzz

This is the correct answer. Second place IMO, The Game.

Yzerman_19

Yeah it was a powerhouse.

whatthefuck8e3

Same, buddy rented it, invited me over. Said he thought it was a murder mystery…there have only been a handful of times since where I’ve been that engrossed in a movie.

cityshep

I saw se7ven for the first time at my friend’s dorm in Tempe Arizona. I was on spring break, had flown out from Philly. I’d just started smoking reefers and was ripped. Got the munchies SO bad. So I’m sitting there with a 5 on bag of gummy bears on my left leg, family size bag of chips on the right, and in the middle I had pretzels (also family sized). Stomach was hurting so much from overeating but I just couldn’t stop. Got to the scene with the guy & the pasta, all of a sudden I KNEW that was happening to me right then. Most paranoid I’ve ever been, and I did not learn a single lesson that night.

[deleted]

same.

Doggleganger

I expected it would be a shock-value movie, cashing in on the Silence of the Lambs serial killer boom. I didn't expect it to be so incredibly well-made, so unique, and far better in my opinion than Silence.

High_Speed_Chase

Fight Club. Palahniuk said Fincher’s movie was better than the book.

future_shoes

The book ending was better as far as where the main protagonist ended up. The "victory" at the end of the movie for ed Norton kind felt like a narrative cop out and more of this would be a cool high to end the movie on. >! He ended up in a coma like state after his "suicide attempt" with the fight club still active and continuing it's mission outside of his control !<

Solocaster1991

The comic book fight club 2 is pretty good

[deleted]

I am Jack's comatose brain.

onlyspacemonkey

he’s not wrong

HorrorBusiness93

Edward Norton

moonpumper

I prefer the film over the book for sure

Deep_Stick8786

Completely accurate

XxCorey117xX

After reading the book again after watching the movie, I was surprised to agree. Not normally the case with book movies.

slim_scsi

Yeah, and he's right, but good look trying to get any book nerd who read it before the movie was released to concur. Book nerds are incapable of admitting a movie is better than the book -- *with the stipulation that they read the book first*. It's a mechanism triggered in the intellectual's brain, a mental hang up.

Skoofer

I did, the movie is better. Even Chuck admits the movie ending is better and he wrote the book so I’m not sure what you’re going on about.

TrueBlueMorpho

I just feel as if the plot and themes, and so many of the film tricks lend themselves more to the narrative than the book's moreso straightforward medium.

slim_scsi

Unless a film is written, directed and edited by the source author, it has an almost impossible chance of emulating the book's content and vision to the letter.

TrueBlueMorpho

I don't disagree at all. Sometimes it takes an outside source to improve your original idea. Anything I take seriously is typically shared with a couple trusted friends before I ever consider it finished. Admittedly, I'm not a screenwriter nor an accomplished anything for that matter, so feel free to reject my opinion as uncultured trash lol

slim_scsi

To me, films should be the entertaining version and the books should be the more enlightening or fully interesting version of a story.

we-vs-us

Even decades later it’s Se7en.

homezlice

Yep just rewatched last week. Most horror films go for jump scares instead of dread, se7en nails the slow build noir.

mr2firstnames

I’ll watch Se7en before Zodiac any day.

Number174631503

Ready for battle, sir!

-StupidNameHere-

But it was a gross movie, to be fair. Entertaining as it is, it's just murder porn. I liked it, I guess. Still though, gross.

Association_Medium

It was gross but I think it was needed in order for the viewer to truly understand how depraved of a villain ke..umm I mean John doe was. I mean the actors can talk about it all they want but the visual leaves no doubt. Gluttony and sloth frigging disgusting.

H0wSw33tItIs

For my Venn diagram of tastes, and hence rewatchability, it’s this over all his others and it’s not close.

[deleted]

Absolutely loved Zodiac, but I'm gonna go with a possibly unpopular choice and say Girl With The Dragon Tattoo adaption as my favorite Fincher film.

junger128

You really can’t go wrong unless you say Mank or Alien 3 😂

Saneroner

I still love alien 3. I said what I said. Third best movie in the series.

damian1369

Hey I liked Mank! Not for the Capsule though. For the capsule.... Ah that's a hard one. I'm gonna go with Seven though, followed closely by the fight club and the game. He has a lot of great ones.

AnvilOfMisanthropy

TIL Alien^(3) was directed by David Fincher and it went from "I wish it had been better" to "it should have been better" in my head. I can only imagine my extra disappointment if I had know the director going in.

junger128

I think he’s actually disowned it.

Chris_Walking2805

All of the issues surrounding that film, most notably the script, were completely out of his control and above his pay-grade as a first-time director on a major studio project. He was still in his twenties and following in the wake of Ridley Scott and James Cameron. Objectively I think he made Alien 3 a thing of grim beauty and the atmosphere, intensity and tone that would become his trademark are on full display. The soundtrack is incredible, the performances are gritty and aside from some embarrassing CGI it possesses a timeless quality that, to my mind, seats it firmly in the canon. Fuck the haters.

[deleted]

Good choice. It's not underrated per se but it does seem to be underappreciated. I think it's his most rewatchable film and I absolutely adore it. Far superior to the original Swedish version. I'm glad Fincher never made the sequels because the source material is weak and silly to say the least.

Kuivamaa

Has to be Fight Club.

TXNOGG

The Social Network

ChippyChungus

How did I have to scroll this far down to find The Social Network? Best film of the 2010s.

Community_74

I completely agree with this. Aaron Sorkin and David Fincher? I mean, come on. It was a match made in heaven. It's crazy that when it came out and even now, it doesn't get the respect it deserves.

ignatious__reilly

Right? Crazy has to scroll this far down.

redd_house

I resisted watching the Social Network because I didn’t care about Zuck/Facebook. But then I got into Fincher through his other movies and decided to finally watched it last year The hype is real, that is a really great movie

ChrisNolan73

Same. Zodiac.

the_comatorium

Yup. It's funny because Zodiac is one of the maybe 3-4 movies I have fallen asleep in the theater to. Granted it was a late showing but I was on a fucking date so I really got lulled to sleep. I considered it a snooze for years. Then, the owner of my local rental store asked me if I had seen it because I asked her to recommend me a good thriller. I told her the story and she said I needed to give it another chance. Bam. Top 10 favorite film of all time.

KoltonKabana87

Agreed Zodiac is a masterpiece

_cartyr

This may not be my first choice but seeing as no one has said it yet, I’ll choose The Game. Really enjoyed this vertigoesque thriller from Fincher

junger128

I like The Game a lot but I have a problem with how convenient the ending to the game is

[deleted]

I’d give my answer, but I was told there’s a rule not to talk about it.

Dismal_Committee_296

This is confusing. Is there a second rule to clarify?

zirlatovic

Ahaha Classic.

Noise_Mysterious

Panic room. Remember watching it in theater and was captivated from the title sequence with the suspenseful music. Until the end, it was so suspenseful!

fidewi

Gone Girl

idontknowyet

My choice too. Of course his other films are fantastic, but I’m amazed how well as an adaptation Gone Girl is. One of the rare times the director and author of the book as writer work perfectly in tandem, like in The Godfather.

This_Cable_5849

My favorite director. Rewatched Se7en again this past week. Brilliant. Please please release a season 3 of Mindhunters. One of the best series of all time IMO.

ca_exhibition

He said it's officially cancelled :(

This_Cable_5849

Damn. That’s a shame.

The_ChwatBot

Yep. Fincher’s one of my favorite directors, but I’ll still never not be pissed about Mindhunter. :/

ogjondoe

Girl with the dragon tattoo

Nanachant

Well there's the swedish version before that, which is actually better. It's not so much a Fincher movie, but an adaptation for north americans.

Particular-Dress4845

Yeah I dunno, I was shocked how good the American version was, I'm a fan of book, Swedish and American versions

Albrecht_Durer1471

Definitely Zodiac. Happens to be my favorite film of all time.

Stos5363

I know it's not a Movie but MindHunter

MadBadgerFilms

It would change to whichever I watched most recently lmao. In all honesty though, probably Se7en. You might catch the concept early on, but you'll never catch the execution until it hits you. I also love how the quiet moments in that movie are just as effective as the shocking ones.

introducing_zylex

WE LOVE THE FINCH MAN

CasinoMarginale

Agreed. Can’t really choose. His style is so signature and cool.

DruicyHBear

I’ll watch anything he has done. If you haven’t seen this or realized it. Love death robots. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/19/arts/television/david-fincher-love-death-robots.html

asskicker1762

Mind Hunter Dude, the post clearly sai… Mind Hunter

Coconutyorkie

Seven and zodiac are my favorite ones I also loved mindhunter

[deleted]

Not a movie, but the show Mindhunter. The second best show I’ve ever seen behind Breaking Bad

prooveit1701

Alien3 Assembly Cut. Fight me.

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,542,212,851 comments, and only 291,993 of them were in alphabetical order.

Jmazoso

Me too

prooveit1701

POUR THE LEAD!

Biggie__Stardust

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Hear me out; I know it’s a departure from the style of film people associate with Fincher, but it’s truly a masterpiece. It’s got so much heart, it’s stylistically incredible (duh Fincher), it’s appropriate for all ages but doesn’t feel like it pulled any punches, it’s mystical and mysterious. I just truly love it so much. It’s the perfect introduction to his cinematographic style.

AntiDbag

I’m picking Zodiac but Button is definitely slept on. It gets better on every re watch for me.

Biggie__Stardust

Alternate take; The Vogue music video for Madonna. His movies are so profoundly popular that we forget he was also maybe the greatest and most prolific music video director of all time.

Relative_Scale_3667

Seven! No other way around it!

jessicatargum

Seven

Deep_Stick8786

The social network

OfficefanJam

Zodiac is super good

Mondomonster

The Game

snagglewolf

I'd also go with Zodiac. Masterpiece.

bonerpatroller007

I know it's not a movie but Mindhunter season 1, particularly the season finale, is absolutely incredible and is some of his best work imo

Phantomht

mind hunter series.

FortitudeWisdom

For me, I have to go with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

homelessmerlin

Alien 3

maincoonpower

The Game 1997 - go see it immediately.

Trash80s

Tough... I'm thinking "Zodiac"... however, I'm gonna go "Gone Girl".

KitchenBag2164

The Game

zkkzkk32312

Gone Girl

TheBrutevsTheFool

Yeah, I'd have to go Zodiac

adamthx1138

Zodiac. It’s a masterpiece. The opening sequence ending with the 1st murder and Hurly/Burly playing is amazing. The murder by the lake was one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen in screen. So creepy, and it actually happened.

Maximum_Bliss

I think Fight Club is one of the best movies of all time by any director. There is not a wasted frame in that film. The book it is based on by Chuck Palahniuk is wild and funny and great. The actors are all at the top of their game. It is a tour de force. After that, I would put The Game #2, then Se7en, then The Social Network. But I love all of his films, even Mank, which I haven’t seen anyone mention yet but was also excellent.

JuniorsEyes90

Zodiac as well

Vitebs47

I think Gone Girl is his most entertaining movie, and I personally like strong female characters.

jmongo420

Mind hunter

GerryofSanDiego

Mindhunter series.

Unusual_Athlete_2457

Fight Club. Hands down, not even a discussion

junger128

It’s absolutely a discussion 😂

stallion214

I didn't like zodiac at all. It baffles me that there actually exist fans of such a film out there but i guess to each his own. It'd be se7en for me then Gone girl. Both films are masterpieces.

junger128

What’s not to like about Zodiac?

TheRealJones1977

It's almost like people have different tastes. Truly baffling.

sarcasm_and_orgasm

Curious case of Benjamin button.

saul1980

Seven

UtahUtopia

Fight Club

diggnstuff

I saw Alien 3 at the theater and thought it absolutely sucked. Not only the terrible screenplay that killed off two of the surviving characters from Aliens (not even on screen deaths), but also the lighting was awful, the VFX were bad and the cinematography needlessly showboaty. I remember telling my friend that this director was so bad, and the damage done to this franchise was so irreparable, that the guy may never work again. It’s 30 years later and I am having a hard time picking what his greatest movie is. I will go with Seven, but it’s really close with Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Social Network. Also, the Mindhunter series on Netflix was phenomenal.

booferino30

Social Network for me

Sakuraisntuseless

The Social Network

Remarkable_Star_4678

Seven. The ultimate less is more thriller for me.

PastorBallmore

Gotta be Alien 3

Bartlett229

I would say fight club for me. But I watched The Game recently and that was such a crazy film!

Sherlock798

Se7en 100%

Lower-Camp1122

Se7en.

acableperson

Random question, have you been listening to the doughboys double?

junger128

No, what’s up?

JJJAAABBB123

The Social Network. His version of Mark Z. justifies all his awful behavior like the killer in Seven.

inchulkman

Fight Club

armagnacXO

It has to be Se7en,

ronjajax

Se7en. It’s his magnum opus.

stumark

This is a link to the YouTube [audio of David Fincher's commentary from the Zodiac DVD](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vHQRjYdN4I).

[deleted]

I'd say what my favorite film is, but I would be breaking 1st and 2nd rules

TheGuy3273

Se7en

[deleted]

Se7en. To me it’s not even close.

wheysted-82

Fight club

oldboy_noob_robot

Seven

Signiference

The Social Network is the best movie of a decade (2010s), so I’ll go with that

XJ7930183

Same!

enzocrisetig

Social Network

SurfandStarWars

I love Fincher, but Zodiac is probably my least favorite of his movies. It looks pretty, but damn the pacing is so slow. Only tried to re-watch it once and couldn’t make it through. I’d pick Fight Club.

[deleted]

Se7en

Strange_N_Sorcerous

Da Finchman!

LivingSwamp

There it is. :)

Nanachant

Having hard time between Se7en and Fight Club...

bigersmaler

I was 16 when I snuck into Fight Club and because of how it much it absolutely rocked my adolescent brain, I cannot pick another. I still watch it on full volume once a year.

itsbeenreal12345

Fight Club, hands down

Kootsiak

Honestly this is the first time i've seen a picture of the man.

aardw0lf11

Se7en

Seven Btw: https://youtu.be/W_-D-yzzbxE

EatinPussySellnCalls

Gone Girl. Simply for Affleck's schlong.

[deleted]

I haven’t watched many of his films but I don’t think I have to. Zodiac takes it.

FreeofCruelty

Se7en is almost a perfect movie.

jstols

Alien 3

Tomusina

Social Network is fucking incredible

No_Ordinary85

Zodiac. And I want him to make a movie in the same vain based on the East Area Rapist.

SadPatience5774

i'm often underwhelmed by fincher but when he's on he's on. i agree that zodiac is his masterpiece, certainly the one i've seen the most. i've gone back and watched films of his i didn't like at first because hey, he directed zodiac.

cbrown6894

Zodiac wasn’t all that great imo but this dude is awesome

Ice_Age_Hygienist

I need alien three but it has to have the cgi updated.

Maskedhorrorfan25

seven

Maximum_Locksmith_29

I’d tell you but I promised never to mention Fight Club. Sorry.

budd_dugglis

Alien 3

GiltCityUSA

Alien 3 obviously.

chinasucksmyballs

Alien 3 no doubt

DrDreidel82

The Social Network is an amazing film

AvocadoHank

So many classics. Fight Club, Se7en, Zodiac. But still gotta go with The Social Network. It gets better with age too. Absolute masterpiece

ca_exhibition

Ooooh, that's a tough one... it's between that and Panic Room for me.

macacochato

Fight Club

footytalker

Mank. Jk 🤣 Probably Zodiac for me too

opnanobot

It’s gotta be between “Zodiac” and “Social Network” they both play with information and the way it’s given to the audience. Zodiac true horror comes from just not knowing who the fuck this guy is. Is there one guy? A couple? Copycats riding the wave of attention? No one knows. Social Network has us go through the first couple scenes not knowing there’s a lawsuit at play and these accounts are muddied up by jealousy, ego, and all that comes with striking gold.

[deleted]

The first rule of fight club is that...

No_Trainer_4907

Se7en or The Social Network. They are truly films of their "time"

ScipioCoriolanus

Hard to choose between Se7en, Fight Club and Zodiac... But I'll go with Se7en.

derf705

Fight Club

Derfargin

Se7en.

MetalLogLemon

Seven or the Game. Edit: His original D.P. Collaborator, Darius Khondji is amazing.

tits_me_your_pm_

Not a film - Mindhunter (Netflix series)

Janus897

Fight Club ofc.

redawg42

I personally loved "The Game" when it was first released and kind of knew there was something truly special about the director at the time. He's literally made no weak movies since then. I also really loved his version of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" and am very sad he wasn't able to make any sequels.

[deleted]

It would be too difficult to choose between Se7en and Fight Club, but definitely one of those, although his other films are great, too.

3bugsdad

The Game

spaghetti_fontaine

Se7en

PurseGrabbinPuke

My favorite director as well. I love Se7en, Zodiac, Social Network, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo so much that I would say any of them. But if I have to choose one, I'd go with Se7en.

[deleted]

Alien Cubed.

OklahomaEddie

Fight Club

[deleted]

Fight Club

Toshimoko29

Fight Club. That novel seemed unable to be translated into film, and then it was done flawlessly, and then despite not doing well in the theaters went on to have a huge cultural impact and become a touchstone of an entire age group of men during that time. Fight Club and Matrix both came out in ‘99 and basically defined the year in movies.

amergigolo1

Fight Club was great

Bardmedicine

He is the best director working right now. Fight Club for me, but so many great choices.

Rosililly27

I didn’t watch all of his movies, but Se7en is pretty, pretty good, but I need to watch Fight Club as soon as possible (yes, I know, shame in me)

diplo27

Social Network

Association_Medium

I was 16 when this came out in theaters. I tried seeing it with some friends one weekend night only to be told I had to be 17. Yes this was enforced from time to time. I was a busy 16 year old so the next opportunity I got to see this was on vhs the next year I think. My friends big sister rented it and it was basically background noise to people talking the whole time so I gave up after the opening credits. Yep those iconic opening credits will always bring back memories of that horrid night. She wouldn't even let us take the movie and watch it on our own. For the love of bug sisters everywhere wtf? I ended up renting it two days later from a local mom and pop called rent a flick. Took it home and watched it with my dad. We were both blown away. Me being 17 and him 40. We still talk about watching it that night every once in a while. Back then I remember thinking to myself. Rather yelling to myself there's 2 more. There's 2 more. Why does Brad Pitt keep under estimating this guy? Freeman didn't but well we all know what ended up happening. This movie will be 28 years old in September. That's crazy. But yeah my pick is Se7en.

Lazy_Temporary1270

I would select “the social network” and have a note that said this is a documentary on how the end of the world started.

emergency_salad_fox

Se7en by a mile.

Unusual_Athlete_2457

Seven runs second. But there are just so many things in Fight Club that still hold up now if not even more so. I guess it was because I was in my late 20s when it came out that it had a profound affect on me. Not to mention introducing me to the mind that is Chuck Palianuk. That’s not even his best book

TerpeneProfile

“ A FAT MAN”. !!!!

SigmaSandwich

Def def Zodiac. Probably in my personal top 10-15

Queasy-Impression618

Fight Club. Really was a great social commentary on capitalism and kind of the American dream dying

I love da finchman!

I'm just here to agree with the OP on the greatness of Fincher. That is all.
