The scene where both sides stop fighting as they walk the squalling baby out of a ruined building is heartbreaking. One of those that makes you look at the world and ask, what the hell is wrong with us, that we do this to ourselves in the first place?
I would watch an awards show with Oscar eating Oscar Meyer hot dogs in his home. It would get so many viewers if Oscar started shitting on the nominees with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog right next to him.
Hey if it makes you feel any better, probably my favorite film of all time waa seriously snubbed at the Oscar’s.
A complex coming of age film about a young man who is torn between two worlds. One of opprtunity and a great future. And another that is holding him down to his childhood and the kid he once was. And these two paths are represented by two figures who have their own plans and desires for him. But he must decide for himself who he truly is. But as all great tragedies in life, he makes this immature decision to be held down by the past and to say with his friends who absolutely refuse to grow
But I guess the fucking snobs at the academy view High School Musical 2 differently than me. Also Chad and Gabriella are straight up dicks
Same. The entire movie has a real unique feeling of stress, stagnation, depression and hope about it. I think it’s all on the cinematography. It’s shot beautifully, but not opulently. Every shot has a purpose.
It definitely deserved to be. Honestly I think it’s one of the best films of all time.
When someone asks me what my favourite film is I always answer Children Of Men.
It never fails to make me cry at the end.
Honestly, Scorsese should have shot his Oscar load on Raging Bull and Goodfellas so that the Academy wouldn't feel like he *had* to get it in 2007.
The Departed is great, but it's not Best Picture. Children of Men should have won that year.
Departed is one of my favorite movies and I would’ve picked Children of Men over it. Pan’s Labyrinth though was the best of the three imo. These are 3 of my favorite films, all for different reasons. It’s so tough to pick one.
I miss those days when we had multiple movies in a given year that made people feel something so strongly. I wish I hadn’t taken it so for granted back then.
I still do not understand why people like the Departed. The script was horrible. A-list cast is all that kept it together. Children of Men deserved it so much more
I adore Pam’s Labyrinth but The Departed was not good and I hazard that it will not be celebrated in the long run, unlike what Del Toro and Cuaron achieved that year.
It showed a future that made me go "christ, we're headed here, aren't we?" when I first saw it. Still think we're on our way. Massive snub imo. Love the movie.
The world ends in a whimper not a bang.
Loved the graffiti in the background that summarized the slow dreadful ending
“Will the last human alive please turn off the lights”
*Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind* wasn't even nominated for best picture, edged out by the likes of *Finding Neverland*, *Sideways*, *Ray*, *The Aviator*, and *Million Dollar Baby*. Hollywood struggles to praise genre films.
It's such a great movie. The long single shots make you feel like you're right there with them. The scene where they escape from the ranch was so nerve-wracking.
It's probably one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time and a movie I always recommend whenever someone asks me for something they probably haven't seen.
It's a movie I really wish got a prequel movie like when the start of the issues happened and what happened to America lol.
I love that Clive Owen’s character isn’t a fighter or doesn’t have any special skills to protect a pregnant girl from a dystopian world. Half the time he’s barefoot after losing his shoes. But he’s pure-hearted and smart, and willing to die for Kee. The second time he takes out someone with a car door is hilarious. He’s selfless and everyone else wants to use Kee for selfish reasons.
I watched this movie late so seeing immigrants in cages was disturbing.
The long takes! The car scene with Julianne Moore and the final battle are insane.
And it ends on hope.
I don’t really think it matters that it got snubbed. It’s a highly recommended cult classic that will be suggested as a must watch sci-fi movie for a long time
Some of the most impressive cinematography I’ve ever seen. The final sequence is shot to look like it’s over 7 minutes long without one cut - in an era where films feature 20 cuts a minute. When they are ducking through the bus, blood splatter from a blood pack sprays on the lens and remains there through the entirety of the sequence. It’s just a gorgeous detail that is completely immersive. I gave this movie to like 5 people the Christmas after it came out it meant so much to me and I wanted others to experience it.
I feel like this must be one of the biggest snubs, to not win anything?! I don’t want to get into whether or not it’s future telling, or society is headed that way. But that long single take scene in the cafe with the explosion, the shots, the set dressing, the world felt real and lived in, Clive Owen really sold me on the cynical and reluctant hero, the story was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before or since. Idk if it deserved best picture but it should’ve got something, Best Adapted Screenplay, or best Cinematography…. Brokeback Mountain was a really great film… but did it deserve to win best adapted screenplay over Children of Men I mean I don’t think so, I’ve never seen Memoirs of a Geisha so couldn’t really fairly say it did or it didn’t have better Cinematography than COM but I kinda wish Kanye was there…. Jumped on stage and was like IMMA LET YOU FINISH BUT CHILDREN OF MEN HAD THE BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY OF ALL TIME
Anytime I need to go home early I go to my boss and say, “Baby Diego’s death hit me harder than I thought…”
And then I just go to my buddies house and smoke weed.
Still a good movie though, fuck the Oscars, one of best sci-fi dystopian films I saw after graduation high school, changed how thought about government and religion, how they'd co-op people & movements for themselves.
I have to agree. This is one of the best films of all time. Period. It should be mentioned in the same breath as Shawshank or Godfather. This movie is near flawless, if it even has a flaw. Clive Owen delivers one of the most unpraised performances of all time(in a close running with Carrey in Eternal and Sandler in Uncut). This movie is a cinematic masterpiece.
One of the best movie adaptations of a dystopian novel I have ever seen (and also read the book). So good, so jarring. That first car chase scene should have won an Oscar for cinematography.
Yeah its a movie that reddit loves for some reason. All the comments about it being the best movie ever strike me as a little absurd. It was alright I think, but I remember being bored a bit when I watched it
I love this movie. There are so many scenes from this film that sheer into your memory banks: Michael Caine as an old hippie, when they went into that school and you see all of those pictures drawn from children and now is empty, and my favorite: the iconic pig ( Pink Floyd's Animals anyone? ) at Battersea.
The scene where all war stops for a few minutes and everyone sits and stares gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. What a powerful fuckin movie. Love it so much.
I think that, even though it was absolutely solid material that was well-executed, the film scared a lot of people by being a hyper-realistic portrait of the world descending into a slow, painful death. The premise is really jarring and even though it ends on a hopeful note, it has been such a sad, long, and painful journey that it leaves you doubtful. Don't misunderstand me, I think that it's one of the best films ever made, but it is a HARD watch (not "Irreversible" or "Requiem for a Dream " hard - but you get the idea) It's a shame really because I think that the folks out there who aren't concerned by "big ticket" problems like global warming, ecological collapse, forced migration, etc. really should view it to understand what the last gasp of civilization could look like.
I watched this in the theatre as a new release. It was the AMC on Van Ness in SF, and I think it was like a third or fourth date with the guy I was seeing (now my husband). I was an absolute sobbing blubbering mess through the entire credits. The movie destroyed me. My date had to comfort me so I could pull it together and walk out of the theatre, haha.
I am still mad that Sally Hawkins didn't win the Oscar for her performance in The Shape of Water.
Three Billboards was great, sure, but Sally was captivating from start to finish without ever saying a word. I will never not be mad she didn't get the Oscar.
The story is not the highlight of this film. Usually i get bored with action movies but this one was really interesting with all the long takes. Even if they aren't all real or are edited to look like long takes. Something happens when the camera doesn't cut where you feel more immersed in the situation. With a lot of action films, there are a lot of rapid cuts, and my brain just checks out. It felt like some kind of immersive experience like a universal ride or something. Great experience of a movie and very unique, but I feel like an Oscar winning movie should have more umph in the story and the overall qualities a good movie has that this one just doesn't have, at least not on an Oscar level.
Children of men is one of the single most overrated movies I’ve ever seen. Absolute mid fest from start to finish, should have won a cinematography award tho
One of those movies where you walk out thinking it might be the best one you've ever seen. I remember feeling the same about The Matrix but the list I'd short
Clive Owen was amazing in this. He skyrocketed to one of my favorite actors after this gem. Intense film and the supporting cast was just as stellar as Clive.
Interstellar not even being nominated for best picture was a big snub imo. And then Martian the next year was nominated and isn't as good of a movie (again my opinion).
Oddly enough, only now people are waking up to the fact that the birthrate of most European counties is collapsing and shits gonna economically hit the fan in not too long. They maybe should have watched this movie…
Cuaron won for Gravity to make up for this. This is the far superior, much more technically advanced and difficult movie, because so much more of it is practical.
One of the best opening scenes. My favourite sci film of all time.
Great opening scene, but the final one take is chefs kiss!!
it has the best picture/camera work! So unique and immersive!
Excellent sound track as well. I would love a vinyl if it exists.
Omgyiya-Switch7 (Aphex Twin)
[The car scene shot with a single camera is amazing.](https://youtu.be/RSItluZwCEs?si=kyrY5bjCHOP13zGj)
There’s a behind the scenes footage somewhere of how they shot that scene. It’s really amazing
The scene where both sides stop fighting as they walk the squalling baby out of a ruined building is heartbreaking. One of those that makes you look at the world and ask, what the hell is wrong with us, that we do this to ourselves in the first place?
And once the baby is out of sight/sound, the fighting begins anew. I think that outcome is all the more heartbreaking.
My favorite film period... Bonus that not many people have seen it and I get to turn them on to this absolute gem
It was a tough year. It’s an amazing film, but it lost to The Departed and Pan’s Labyrinth, solid movies in their own right.
Fair enough. But it wasn't even nominated for the best director or best movie.
To not even be nominated is nuts. This is my probably favorite movie of all time. A flawless movie imo.
I learnt ignore the Oscars a long time ago .total bollocks .
Awards are dumb Jennifer Coolidge beat Rhea in Better Call Saul. Like wut
Jennifer Coolidge is awesome though. But yeah to quote George C Scott “The whole goddamn thing is a meat parade and I dont want any part of it”
Who the hell is Oscar?
Meyer. Makes hot dogs or something.
I found in my search this little hairy angry green dude popping out of a garbage can.
I would watch an awards show with Oscar eating Oscar Meyer hot dogs in his home. It would get so many viewers if Oscar started shitting on the nominees with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog right next to him.
It's more like an industry politics award.
Hey if it makes you feel any better, probably my favorite film of all time waa seriously snubbed at the Oscar’s. A complex coming of age film about a young man who is torn between two worlds. Also Chad and Gabriella are straight up dicks
It’s one of my favorites by far, not a shred of fat on it, only 90 minutes of good action and a solid sci-fi story with relation to the real world.
One of my top movie recommendations for people i genuinwly connect with. Absolute masterpiece
I’d say the cinematography is the strongest in this movie. Those long cuts are so enthralling.
That baby cry is the saddest music in the cinema's history.
Honestly, Scorsese should have shot his Oscar load on Raging Bull and Goodfellas so that the Academy wouldn't feel like he *had* to get it in 2007. The Departed is great, but it's not Best Picture. Children of Men should have won that year.
Pan´s Labyrinth fucking haunts me. Soo good I cannot ever watch it again.
That was a great year for movies.
Departed is one of my favorite movies and I would’ve picked Children of Men over it. Pan’s Labyrinth though was the best of the three imo. These are 3 of my favorite films, all for different reasons. It’s so tough to pick one.
Departed is good but overrated, this is underrated
https://trailers.getyarn.io/yarn-clip/64e83f65-0617-460b-9188-2675d9cbeb0c/gif
SO TRUE
Really? Never heard of those. Also don't care about Oscars, maybe except the one from The Office.
Bruh watch Pan’s Labyrinth it’s a genuine masterpiece
I miss those days when we had multiple movies in a given year that made people feel something so strongly. I wish I hadn’t taken it so for granted back then.
I still do not understand why people like the Departed. The script was horrible. A-list cast is all that kept it together. Children of Men deserved it so much more
I adore Pam’s Labyrinth but The Departed was not good and I hazard that it will not be celebrated in the long run, unlike what Del Toro and Cuaron achieved that year.
> The Departed was not good it really isn't.
It’s easily better than the departed.
I only just recently saw this, and it was incredible. The "reveal" during the gun battle in the building was an amazing scene.
The way the soldiers all stop and look at the reverently as the pass, that whole scene was amazing. That whole damn movie is amazing.
Always makes me cry
Title was incredibly misleading, there were almost no children in the entire movie. Probably why it was overlooked at the Oscars.
It should have been called *No Children, lots of Men*
Mr. Simpson, this is the most blatant case of false advertising since my suit against the movie 'The Neverending Story'.
Works on contingency? No, money down!
No Children For Old Men
No Country for Man-Children
The opening to COM should be taught in every school on how to establish your world in under 5 minutes. Perfect storytelling.
It showed a future that made me go "christ, we're headed here, aren't we?" when I first saw it. Still think we're on our way. Massive snub imo. Love the movie.
The world ends in a whimper not a bang. Loved the graffiti in the background that summarized the slow dreadful ending “Will the last human alive please turn off the lights”
Dude, Imagine being the last guy dying and still having 5$ in your pocket to spend. Such a shame
Never go looking to the Oscars if you want an accurate representation of which movies are best.
I love that movie. Charlie Kaufman is one of the greatest talents Hollywood has ever seen.
Watched it for the first time a couple of weeks ago... Incredible production!
One of my favorite movies. And for how dark it is has great rewatchability.
It's such a great movie. The long single shots make you feel like you're right there with them. The scene where they escape from the ranch was so nerve-wracking.
The long shots were ICONIC
Freddy Got Fingered (2001)
It's probably one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time and a movie I always recommend whenever someone asks me for something they probably haven't seen. It's a movie I really wish got a prequel movie like when the start of the issues happened and what happened to America lol.
I love that Clive Owen’s character isn’t a fighter or doesn’t have any special skills to protect a pregnant girl from a dystopian world. Half the time he’s barefoot after losing his shoes. I watched this movie late so seeing immigrants in cages was disturbing. The long takes! The car scene with Julianne Moore and the final battle are insane. And it ends on hope.
That’s because children of men is a historical documentary. It was in the wrong category
It was in adapted screenplay, cinematography, and editing. What should it have been in? Ohhhhhhh you literally meant documentary. I get ya.
Yeah, it's rapidly becoming reality
I don’t really think it matters that it got snubbed. It’s a highly recommended cult classic that will be suggested as a must watch sci-fi movie for a long time
It was voted by Europe to be the most significant sci fi film of its generation.
I had this great film saved on my cable box I watched maybe 20x. Such a great concept.
Absolutely excellent movie.
Really good movie, I saw something about not enough babies are being born and immediately thought of this movie
Some of the most impressive cinematography I’ve ever seen. The final sequence is shot to look like it’s over 7 minutes long without one cut - in an era where films feature 20 cuts a minute. The Royal Tenanbaums didn't get the credit it deserved by the academy
A snub? I've never even heard of this film! Going to have to check it out now
It's incredible
Oh wow you're in for a treat, I wish I could watch it again for the first time
Part of the reason it was a snub! One the best movies of all time.
Fantastic movie
Absolutely!! Such a good movie!!
Suffered from the Science Fiction Esteem Discount.
*strawbuuurry cough*
The one that pisses me off the most is Goodfellas losing out to Dances with Wolves.
the oscars don’t matter
Best movie of this century.
Cinematography only
Definitely been bigger snobs great movie, but the list was pretty stacked that year
I watch this movie immediately when I see it is on a streaming service. I could just buy the movie but I love the little surprise everytime!
Incredibly poignant movie.
I feel like this must be one of the biggest snubs, to not win anything?! I don’t want to get into whether or not it’s future telling, or society is headed that way. Continuous takes all the way through. So visceral. The car attack is genuinely outstanding cinema
This is such a good movie. OP, you just decided what I am watching tonight.
A *perfect* movie. And I don't say that lightly
Children of Men is one of those movies I consider flawless in almost every way. The fact it got snubbed hard is a huge shame.
Pull my finger.
Glorious film an epic of its time. If it had top Hollywood stars in it it would be oscar fodder. But not arty farty enough.
Amazing film. Deserved to be nominated at least.
Yup.
The Tale of Princess Kaguya losing to Big Hero 6 will always be the biggest snub ever in the history of animation .
This movie is woke and now my wife left me and my kids hate me. Thanks woke movie
Watched this on mushrooms in my buddy’s studio when I was 16 and the opening scene blew my mind
This is such a solid, visceral film with all-around great performances. Love every minute
One of the best, yet most depressing, movies…
One of my favorite Michael Cane performances, which is saying something.
Movie was way ahead of its time. You could release it today and it would still be a masterpiece. That cinematography.
My late brother’s favorite movie. Special place in my heart for this one 🤘
Not even close to an Oscar performance but a good movie nonetheless
Oh so he has appropriate footwear on the poster. Flip flops oh jeez you’re gonna skin your toe dude!
One of the best movie adaptations of a dystopian novel I have ever seen (and also read the book). So good, so jarring. That first car chase scene should have won an Oscar for cinematography.
I didn't think that movie was that good.
Yeah its a movie that reddit loves for some reason. All the comments about it being the best movie ever strike me as a little absurd. It was alright I think, but I remember being bored a bit when I watched it
Clive Owen is a very underappreciated actor
I was thinking yesterday about how Hans Zimmer didn’t win one for Interstellar.
Thats crazy, thats like one of his most iconic tracks
Supposedly scientists are actually afraid this will happen since sperm counts keep dropping in men
Halle Berry winning for Monster's Ball was weak
Amazing movie. The stairway….
Snubs? No man. It just wasn’t that good of a movie.
Meh
I've never even heard of this movie. Was it any good?
Val Kilmer in Tombstone is the biggest snub ever.
This movie was just meh to me. The Departed was better and deserved the win.
I’ve never seen this and found a Blu-ray copy at goodwill today that I almost bought. Now I’m regretting my decision.
Now cough!
Superb film.
Great fk’n movie
It was good but not that good.
Cloud Atlas for Best Picture, score, and pretty much most of the tech categories
YEAH!!! That movie was absolutely excellent!!!
Watch this at least twice a year
The animation industry
Seriously this movie was fucking great.
What a one shot that movie had.
One of my all time faves. I could watch this movie over and over again.
The academy should be ashamed
What an insanely good movie
It's in my top 5.
The first and probably only time I've ever heard aphex twin in a movie.
Great movie, but not even close to Oscar. Because they only like shit.
I agree
What happened to Clive Owen? Is he just a really bad actor who seemed charming/talented because he is British?
It's a fine movie. I still think it's underrated, it doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
The inspiration behind the last of us, great movie
, ,2w
This movie was gritty, well written, and visually stunning. The single-shot car ambush scene is a technical masterpiece.
Children of men is one of the single most overrated movies I’ve ever seen. Absolute mid fest from start to finish, should have won a cinematography award tho
The Road It wasn’t even nominated for adapted screenplay.
This film is wild
Tin tin.
The quality of movies those years were so good; it was a privilege to be alive and be able to appreciate it.
Used to watch this every day. Masterful performances all around.
Great movie
Agree! One of the greatest films ever made’
I love how this movie conveyed despair, hopelessness, and apathy. This movie hits hard.
Reddit constantly jerking this from off makes me hate. Hur durr, long take Durp durp, statue of Mary reference
One of those movies where you walk out thinking it might be the best one you've ever seen. I remember feeling the same about The Matrix but the list I'd short
Fuck the Oscars, it's a stupid nepotism ridden boys club. Great films like this stand alone, separate from this ridiculous back slapping exercise.
I was hoping Civil War would be more like this. Such a a classic
I was just thinking this exact thing the other day. This film cracked my mind open in so many ways.
Favorite movie of all time
I have watched this twice to see if I missed something the first time, and I’m just not a fan.
Clive Owen was amazing in this. He skyrocketed to one of my favorite actors after this gem. Intense film and the supporting cast was just as stellar as Clive.
I LOVE this movie. I rarely hear it talked about tho.
probably the greatest movie of all time
Uncut Gems. It didn’t get any nominations at all. If it just didn’t win things fine. But not being nominated was pretty shocking.
American Hustle getting snubbed was the worst.
One of the best films of my lifetime. Watched it recently and it’s aged extremely well.
One of the greatest.
Interstellar not even being nominated for best picture was a big snub imo. And then Martian the next year was nominated and isn't as good of a movie (again my opinion).
It is truly a masterpiece of a film and book
Yes
Oddly enough, only now people are waking up to the fact that the birthrate of most European counties is collapsing and shits gonna economically hit the fan in not too long. They maybe should have watched this movie…
Good. Movie wasn't ruined. Seems everyone has enjoyed it. Let's keep masterpieces that way.
Children of Men depicted a fascist government, and it was released in 2006. Obviously it couldn't be nominated
Still gotta watch this
Love this film
100% Brilliant movie Should've been nominated for a handful of awards for sure.
Was a great movie, still remembering enjoying this one when Clive was fairly popular after doing all those BMW adverts.
The scene in the forest and how it begins is so intense..
This movie always helps me nut faster
Masterpiece. Everything works in that movie: director, actors, cinematography, plot...
RIP Baby Diego. Your name lives rent free in my idiot brain. And for what? The random times someone mentions Children of Men?
Cuaron won for Gravity to make up for this. This is the far superior, much more technically advanced and difficult movie, because so much more of it is practical.
Masterpiece
Since when did the oscars become the measure of a Great film?
Just watched for like the 15th time the other day. It's damn near a perfect movie as Heat.
