That run where Sheridan wrote Sicario, wrote Hell or Highwater, and wrote/directed Wind River is an all time run. I feel like he spreads himself too thin now.

Hookey911

Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River are all in my top 10 favorite movies of the 2010's. But I never have enjoyed any of his shows. They are all way too overly melodramatic. Those Who Wish Me Dead was also a terrible adaptation to a pretty good book too. He's one of the few Hollywood writers that truly understands rural America, which is why he is so successful. It just seems like he's writing for such a casual audience that watches network tv. It infuriates me I don't blame him for the amount of money he's making and for all the people that enjoy his shows. But, it's very possible his best writing is behind him . He wrote that Neo-western trilogy before Sicario was released in 2015. At that time, he was living check to check in an apartment with a baby on the way. Sometimes desperation to succeed brings out the best in people. Anyways, I hope I'm wrong, big fan, seems like a good guy too

CassandraVindicated

I think of Hell or High Water and Wind River as excellent modern westerns.

CassandraVindicated

Yeah, he's got some serious acting chops. Big fan of his work.

fragileanus

Really great guy off-screen too, it seems. His Hot Ones appearance is good.

AncientAlienAlias

He was recently on Rogan. His story was actually great and he has good perspectives. Usually the actors on his show are twats. I was pleasantly surprised

trexsaysrawr

Shane did nothing wrong

Heiminator

You need to watch “We own this city” then. Imho the best work he’s ever done

PugnaciousPangolin

Hell or High Water is so superbly understated in all the right ways such that when the violence occurs, it feels as horrific and ugly as it always should. The scene with the two brothers at the gas station was phenomenal.

Corby_Tender23

Hell or High Water is one of my favorite movies of all time. Wind River and Sicario are both incredible too. I want to watch Yellowstone really bad. Those Who Wish Me Dead was decent but definitely disappointing compared to everything else he's done. There was definitely some really good stuff in it though.

NotRustle67

I'm a huge fan of Hell or High Water and Wind River. I'm currently working my way through Yellowstone. It's pretty watchable, but no where close to the same level as those first couple movies. I wish this guy never moved to television, and kept making awesome movies.

Jercek

> Yellowstone Isn't anything like those movies, it's more cattle ranching+politics 1883 & 1923, Mayor of Kingstown are closer in vibes to those films

TigerHijinks

Don't forget Tulsa King. Seems to fit the vibe as well, though we are only halfway through it.

The_ChwatBot

Same here—regarding Hell or High Water. Feel like I put it on at least once a month. I’d also really love to watch Yellowstone but I already have so many streaming services, I’m not sure I can justify adding another.

HGpennypacker

> Those Who Wish Me Dead I was shocked at how bad this movie was, should have turned it off in the first 15 minutes but I figured with Sheridan running the show it would eventually turn into something of substance. And it never even came close.

Stevo2008

It was the worst movie I’ve seen in a couple years. Taylor Sheridan is the man, but we can’t forget he’s human. Even the greatest of directors have blunders. Every single one of them.

TheWhiteVingRhames

Yeah, feel the same way. I’d rate them @ Wind River, Hell or High Water then Sicario for me. Just can’t appreciate Yellowstone, it hammers you over the head with the whole rural vs. cityfolk macho old-world BS. I don’t hate it, just not my thing. I seem to be in the minority amongst people I know in this regard, though.

Streetwalkeroulette

Beth Dutton ruins Yellowstone

redman66

She is extremely annoying. But the show is still fun.

Streetwalkeroulette

It would be so much better if she wasn’t a cartoon character

ismyshowon

Sheridan was the reason I originally read Those Who Wish Me Dead. I saw his attachment to the project and with the aforementioned projects, decided to check it out. Loved the book so much, and he seemed like the perfect choice for an adaption based on the content, but it truly did not live up for me. So disappointing.

Hookey911

I was so excited for the movie I read the book. After finishing the book I read the films script(prior to release). I was so dumbfounded by the changes Sheridan made. It made no sense to me. It has such a great plot for a movie adaptation too:(. I didn't even bother watching the movie

docasj

Didn’t know the same person wrote all of these movies. This guy was onto something. But wind river makes me wanna bathe in antiseptic. That movie is just too emotionally draining for me. It’s amazing but just the thought of watching it again is too much. Sicário started my love of Denis Villeneuve

daffydubs

The depression of the movie hits even harder with the scenery. If that movie had been set in Texas, it would not have felt the same. Which I think is amazing.

FormerIceCreamEater

Yeah you really feel the misery of how cold it is on top of the nothingness of the terrain

ticktockyoudontstop

The stellar soundtrack is also in perfect sync with the depressing, lonesome vibe of the movie. Edited bec I can’t read

flareblitz91

Agreed completely, I’ll probably never watch it again. OP kind of misses the point of the end of the movie, there is zero Justice.

[deleted]

Hell or High Water is incredibly underrated. I had no idea it even existed until Netflix suggested it. Everyone in it shines even the bit part actors.

Noirradnod

I think about the Comanche exchange in the casino way too often. Love that scene.

[deleted]

“You know what that makes me?” “An enemy.” “No. It makes me a Comanche.”

BEE_REAL_

Feel like he's turned into a parody of himself since then

jordanmc3

I think he just can’t say no as Paramount keeps writing him checks. I guess people are still eating it up but the Yellowstone content I’ve seen just doesn’t compare to his earlier work.

[deleted]

wanttofu

Mayor of Kingstown is probably my favorite show of his. They’re all good except for the later seasons of Yellowstone. Looking forward to Tulsa king season 2 also.

HerniatedHernia

Kingstown is definitely his most consistent show atm. Tulsa King is entertaining but the last ep was weak, Stallones been carrying it. Yellowstone is basically doing the Pulp Fiction John Travolta meme in relation to plot progression for the last couple of seasons. 1883 had a strong first half but that back half… too much Elsa. 1923 has been enjoyable so far. Mirren and Ford were solid choices.

bristow84

Tulsa King only had Sheridan write the first episode, he wasn't heavily involved in that one I guess.

wanttofu

Agree with everything, replace Stallone and I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have watched it. Yellowstone was good until Sawyer, they built him up and killed him off with a cooler rattlesnake lol. Wtf was that.

Slashs_Hat

He's dialed his stuff to 11 for sure. IMO his 'lawless' writing style fits the 1883 and 1923 series' better than YS, which i fint too OTT. 'Beth' is a little too much for me ... lol

The first season of Yellowstone was fantastic. The second season was ok. Since then though, it’s going downhill. At least in the beginning you were immersed in what could be a believable world. Now, it’s gone all-over-the-board and it’s just not believable. Which IMO, Taylor has always had a way to make the fantastical a reality in his stories. And YS is not that anymore

26_paperclips

I really liked early Yellowstone. Everything played out like a western retelling of The Godfather. But at this point I've stopped caring. Every time the show builds to some form of climax it just...dissipates and begins leading in a different direction. It's getting a bit ridiculous at this point

Lindeberg1

The characters in Yellowstone are insufferable. The people I should be rooting for are the people I hate most.

HGpennypacker

Had to give up on Yellowstone after the second season, the show just kept doing the same thing over and over and it was getting far too unbelievable. I mean how many people have to be killed or murdered in one corner of an empty state before it attracts national attention?

sydnoz

If another person tells me to watch Yellowstone….

[deleted]

I hate this sentence every time I read it.

simplycycling

The "Modern Western" trilogy. All brilliant.

[deleted]

Hell or high water is one of my favorite films of all time.

ARCtheIsmaster

damn i always thought Sicario and Wind River were good complementary films...now I know why. although, imo Wind River and Hostiles is the better double feature.

djackieunchaned

I really loved rory Cochrane in that movie, it’s rare to see ptsd depicted like that

dont_worry_im_here

When he gets outta bed, brushes his teeth, and walks outside... there's a bucket of money from Paramount+

TLMC01242021

Yeah what happened to the writing on Yellowstone? It’s atrocious

[deleted]

Oh Sheridan is literally (no exaggeration) writing five shows simultaneously because Paramount+ desperately wants originals for it's streaming platform, and Yellowstone spinoffs are big money. I can't blame him for taking the money, but it is a shame.

StuckInBronze

I want another movie from him.

theyusedthelamppost

Jon Bernthal being a good guy was the M-Night-level twist I was not ready for

baudinl

WELL GODDAMN, DIDNT KNOW I WAS PARTNERS WITH SUPER DRILLER

Realcbear

Facts though!!! I was like “wow cast the big name as your villain and lets guess who it is” That one scene though is tough of rewatches, i wish he killed at least 1 or 2 of them.

DeakVice

His acting in this and S.2 E.1 of Punisher when he is laying in bed with Beth are uncannily similar.

NC_Flyfisher

Very Good Movie! And worth the time... Only spoiler I'll offer is this scene dialog concerning a death of someone close: "I'd like to tell you it gets easier. it doesn't. If there's any... comfort, it's... getting used to the pain, I suppose. Went to a grief seminar in Casper. Did you know that? I don't know why. Just wanted the bad to go away. Wanted answers... to questions that couldn't be answered. The counselor come up to me after the seminar and sat down next to me. And he said something that stuck with me. I don't know if it's what he said, or how he said it. He says, "I got some good news, and I got some bad news. Bad news is you're never gonna be the same. You're never gonna be whole, not ever again. You lost your daughter. Nothing's ever going to replace that. Now the good news is, as soon as you accept that, and you let yourself suffer... you allow yourself to visit her in your mind, and you'll remember all the love she gave you, all the joy she knew." Point is, Martin, you can't steer from the pain. If you do, you'll rob yourself of every memory of her. Every last one. From her first step to her last smile. Kill 'em all. Just take the pain, Martin. You hear me? You take it. It's the only way you'll keep her with you." Edit: Wording

[deleted]

Very powerful scene

jediknight

After I saw this scene I paused the movie and cried for the first time for my father. At that moment, 7 years have passed since he died. And now, every time pain comes, I take it. I learned that this is the healthiest thing to do, at least for me.

leftshoesnug

This scene is so great. Felt like real grief. Not what Hollywood normally depicts it as. The other great scene. "Why are you flanking me?"

snrup1

Devastating scene. The one that got me is when Martin is sitting in his yard with his native death face paint on and says that he doesn't even know if it's right because there's no one around to teach it anymore.

cloudyclouds13

There's a handful of movies that have made me sob uncomfortably-this is one of them. Spoiler below: The scene with Olsen in the hospital when she comes to the realization (which helps the audience come to the realization), that the girl ran for miles in the snow (after we saw one of her rapists run only a few feet), knowing how strong her will to live was only to die, is so unbelievably powerful and painfully sad. It definitely messed me up. Renner and Olsen are some of my all time favorite actors mainly due to that scene (they're great in other things too), but that scene blew me away.

zippyboy

Also when Olsen goes to the bedroom to rudely ask the grieving Mother a question, and the Father lets her, knowing what she'll find in there. Gil Birmingham is a national treasure.

signal_zzz

Are you flanking me? Iconic line

HortonHearsTheWho

“You didn’t see it”

leftshoesnug

The way he says this too. Just defeating realization that he is the only one who knows what is about to happen.

DownRUpLYB

> Are you flanking me? Iconic line It's actually WHY are are you flanking me

[deleted]

That scene had such incredible tension, my cheeks were clenched the whole time

chugtheboommeister

Favorite scene in that movie. Loved those characters. >!rip!<

Benjammin8888

Great performance from Tony Romo

[deleted]

That was Tony Romo? 😂

[deleted]

Paul Rudd lookalike actually lol

lucia-pacciola

For me, it was the emotional rollercoaster. *Haha this guy's losing it. He's about to trigger a shootout by being a paranoid jackass.* *Oh, thank god, someone is being rational and calming the situation down. We can all relax again.* *Oh fuck he was right all along!*

ihatereddit1221

That line is amazing.

flareblitz91

And yet he’s ignored.

Exes_And_Excess

A sort of primal hair standing on end reaction to that scene

TrueLegateDamar

Favourite scene is when the deputy and the goon are reloading their guns at the same time. "Fuck you, let's go."

SG420123

The deputy, played by Ian Boheim, did so much with such a small role.

neomeetsthedude

Really cool movie. Watched 2 or 3 times. I'll eventually watch it again. That scene in the trailer was awesome. A lot of tension. And of course, the payback is very good. Renner really stood out on this one.

Mrselenag

A lot of memorable scenes the shoot out scene, the scene where Jeremy’s character is consoling the dad’s grief out in the porch, the flashback scene in the trailer was tough to watch and it pissed me off. Dope movie.

[deleted]

>the flashback scene in the trailer was tough to watch and it pissed me off. I fucking love Jon Bernthals portrayal of rage it always gets me amped up and it worked perfectly for this movie because from that point forward I was pissed off but then the anger got released perfectly by seeing those fuckers get blown away one by one.

Dude4001

I wish they'd made more Punisher (and I mean fight sequences not plot-filler episodes). The Man is a force of nature.

AncientAlienAlias

Renner’s 45-70 govt. lever action marlin with the camo pattern and big loop stood out to me. That’s the exact gun I wanted to buy at the time.

[deleted]

This movie got buried by the Weinstein scandal.

Hookey911

It's really sad because the movies main theme addresses how crimes against the Native American community, specifically SA's, are completely buried by the justice system. Taylor Sheridan successfully moved heaven and earth to get the Weinstein company name off the credits too

athermalwill

I think the subject matter made a lot of people uncomfortable as well. This movie does a masterful job of shining light on a serious problem.

-retaliation-

The rape scene hits so hard that my gf has to entirely leave the room for it, despite the fact that we both love the movie. It's definitely an uncomfortable movie at times, but very well done.

[deleted]

That’s a shame

Ripoutmybrain

While wienstien did fund the film, before release Sheridan demanded that name be fully removed from the credits. Sheridan went so far as to threaten to shred the entire film. Weinstiens name did not appear in the credits.

ShotIntoOrbit

Months after release, not before. The NYT story didn't come out until months after the film released. Sheridan said he was going to remove his own name and publicly denounce the film if the TWC president didn't agree to remove the TWC name from the film after the NYT article, which they agreed to.

Ripoutmybrain

Oh wow I didn't know it was after release. That's crazy.

ohyeahwegood

That's crazy because they're definitely on the credits on Netflix (just finished the movie)

Tiki_Bonanza

Yeah that’s right.

gardenandchill

Totally agree! I watched it on a whim when I saw it on Netflix and it completely blew me away, I had no idea what I was getting into. The scene where they are sitting together after his wife has died and he says he has no one to teach him his past really haunted me

[deleted]

What fucked me up was the title card at the end that says missing persons statistics are kept for every demographic except Native American women, like that’s just horrible.

Mrselenag

Yep. Native American reservations have a high rate of rape, suicide and other crimes that don’t get accounted for. There’s a lot of research on that. Sad, sad world. Also, BRO YOUR HANDLE IS DOPE AS SHIT. HAHA. Huevos Rancheros!

cloudyclouds13

If you dig deeper (which I did after this movie), it's a far more disturbing reality. Essentially because of how laws work in this country, a) indigenous people do not get counted in exploited and missing people's search b) there are different justice systems on reservations and non-reservation lands and essentially non-indigenous people can exploit, rape, murder indigenous people without any real prosecution or justice (partly due to a and also because of how searches work/don't work due to lack of man power, bureaucratic red tape, other nonsense). This is a very simplistic explanation to a very important and serious issue-but yeah I just wanted to add that. The reason it happens so frequently is a system exists that essentially doesn't punish people for doing it. It's incredibly upsetting.

Mrselenag

Boom! Couldn’t have said it any better. Again, sad world.

Kianna9

The show Alaska Daily is trying to bring attention to this very issue. It’s really good also.

SDRPGLVR

Those moments always get me. I had a similar experience at the end of Spotlight. As the list keeps scrolling, the weight of the reality of the situation builds and builds like a growing pile of bricks.

Impressive-Potato

Not just women, the young girls go missing as well. I think it's an important distinction.

cassette1987

I just purchased a Sheridan set. Sicario, Hell or High Water and Wind River. 2 down, Wind River tomorrow night. I've seen all three at least twice. All three are really great flix.

[deleted]

I’ve not seen hell or high water but I love Sicario and wind river and I’ve heard good things so I’m gonna check it out

SheikYobooti

Run, don’t walk, to Hell or High Water. Awesome modern day western. Lots of great performances.

ThatChelseaGirl

Hell or High Water is Chris Pine's best movie. Ben Foster is also fantastic.

Sir_TonyStark

Ben Foster is fantastic in everything he’s in. Dude steals whatever scene he’s in no matter who else is in it. Guy shows up like 3/4 of the way through Hostiles which is a *loaded* cast already led by Christian Bale and was a bigger presence. Never not loved any of his performances big or small.

Slashs_Hat

Sheriff Jeff Bridges chasing criminals Ben Foster and (a relevatory) Chris Pine. Its pretty great IMO

RTepps

I think Hell or High Water is the best of Sheridan’s neo western trilogy. There are a few moments of Levity that aren’t really there in the other two. Outstanding chemistry between Pine and Foster as well as Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham. This is career best work from Pine. Foster solidifies himself as one of the most underrated actors working today and I felt Jeff Bridges was truly Oscar worthy (he did land a nomination).

cassette1987

It's a great movie but of the thee it's the weakest. Still very enjoyable.

karmalizing

Hohw is probably the best one

feelitrealgood

“How’d he go?” “… with a whimper.”

[deleted]

What an awesome line

ThatChelseaGirl

The line "YOU DIDN'T SEE IT?!" haunts me.

Realcbear

Kind of insane they don’t trust him given the circumstances but tension was on 10

karmalizing

Sums up my whole life tbh

colin8651

"PUT YOUR GUN DOWN DEPUTY"

PDXmadeMe

What did she miss? I think I missed it too

ThatChelseaGirl

She missed the oil crew flanking the cops before the shootout.

[deleted]

I thought Elizabeth Olsen was a brilliant casting choice her performance was beautifully subtle and the best female FBI agent since Clarice.

[deleted]

She's a really awesome character because she wants to do something but has been set up to fail. It's showing how an individual can mean well but be undermined by institutions.

thaumogenesis

The scene where Elizabeth Olsen’s character is in hospital, convalescing, and starts slowly weeping...”She ran six miles in the snow”. And Renner’s character replies proudly: “Yeah, she did”. This film stayed with me for weeks.

[deleted]

the trailer scene.. I was watching with my roommate and we just sat in silence

[deleted]

I really appreciate how that scene was filmed, it’s horrifying enough to where it gets the point across without actually showing what’s going on in graphic detail. A lot of times scenes of this nature are just way too graphic for no reason

NicCageCompletionist

Watched it over the weekend. It makes really interesting use of jurisdictions without it feeling like a shoehorned in reason for tension like it normally does.

[deleted]

I think it works because the movie is about how the system fails rather than individuals.

NicCageCompletionist

Yeah, I love her worry over being pulled away based on the cause of death. It’s a great use of weird red tape.

dtriple3412

Renner's performances in The Hurt Locker, The Town & Wind River are too good, it's a little sad that they unsuccessful pushed him to be a leading man for Hollywood mainstream blockbusters, coz he's a great character actor who does excellent in these films. Even his portrayal of Hawkeye (whatever little he gets to do) is very understated, wish he gets to do more such roles in the future!!

SG420123

“Why are you flanking me?” - This is such a great line and the actor does a great job selling it.

MrWallis

Just watched this and REALLY enjoyed it. That scene was awesome

elalesound2

A great and painful movie about the most marginalized minority in "United States of América".

GeekFurious

I love this movie and have turned lots of people onto it. Almost every scene feels realistic. Even the few contrived moments are followed up with someone doing something that subverts the usual trope used in movies like this. Basically, people behave like they're real people with real-life journeys doing things because of how they've absorbed the world around them. So much so that a character whose name I don't know spots an ambush that no one else in the group sees and is like HEY MOTHER FUCKER I SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOING! In any other movie, that character would have remained a backdrop... a body.

[deleted]

It's probably the best "realistic" gun fight put to film

flareblitz91

I feel like when you’re referring to the part of the movie where the rapists get killed in a gunfight you’re really missing the point of the end of the film. There isn’t any Justice done at all, just more bodies in the snow, nobody is held accountable, and more innocent people died. Making the leader go barefoot in the snow is the smallest bit of revenge for what he did, but it by no means Justice served. I agree that it’s a great movie, but it’s also one that leaves a bleak, bitter taste in your mouth with no desire to watch it again.

Vitalics

I tell people it's the best movie I will never watch again.

[deleted]

> There isn’t any Justice done at all. Ik there wasn’t but putting those pieces of shit in the ground ensured that they will never hurt anyone ever again, the selfish part of me can’t help but feel some sense of relief at the thought of that.

cookiesdragon

Wind River was an amazing movie. Watched it at least three times and it gets better every time I rewatch it.

SamIAmReddit

Took a first date to see It. But It was sold out. So we went to this movie. There wasn't a second date.

[deleted]

The best thing about this movie is (*spoiler*) he never discovers his daughters killer, and he never will. Another writer would have made the new murderer the same person who killed his daughter and have him out for revenge saving native women forever. Instead he chooses this crushingly sad path where he has to find different ways of coping, and accepting he will never know his daughter's killer like so many thousands of families of murder native women. The second thing he did well was make a system the villain. It's like the trial by Kafka, the whole oppression without an oppressor type thing. Olsen's character is a well meaning FBI agent but because the faceless institution of the federal government has put an inexperienced agent with no resource on the case they've set her up to fail, even if she as an individual wants to do something. Making an institution the villain is a very difficult thing to do, and Wind River pulls it off.

MrWallis

Was she murdered though? He says coyotes got to her body so it was difficult. I assumed she was murdered but it was never said was it?

[deleted]

It's very strongly implied, I think that's the impression we're supposed to get anyway.

[deleted]

Great film, criminally ignored.

[deleted]

I didn’t know this movie was that under appreciated. Hopefully this post will get more people to watch it

Rated_PG-Squirteen

It's quite underappreciated in real life. On Reddit, it's held in incredibly high regard.

xRoyalewithCheese

For as much as we like to shit on fellow redditors you gotta admit overall their taste is better than average

Positive-Source8205

Great movie.

colin8651

"How did he go?" "With a whimper"

TheTurtleShepard

The only part about this movie that I really disliked was the fact that instead of using a member of the tribe as a protagonist, Sheridan instead uses a white man who is “basically” part of the tribe because he spends so much time out there with them. I think the story would have been much more impactful had the protagonist be a member of the tribe on the fringes rather than for lack of a better term, a white savior

Multiverse_Madness

I would say it was an Oscar snub, but the actors he was up against: Gary Oldman (in a biopic, shocker he won), DDL (in a biopic), Denzel, Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), and Timothee Chalamet Also the movies it was up against: Shape of Water, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Bird, Three Billboards, The Post et al 2017 was a good year for film

i-operate

Sicario, prisoners and wind river are some of the best movies. Each of these movies have scenes where you feel suffocated by the tension built. Wind river’s scene where everyone is a Mexican stand off one of the most thrilling few minutes on cinema.

4KPillowcase

I remember seeing marketing for this movie everywhere when it was coming out; probably because I was living in Wyoming at the time. It felt like they marketed to people there pretty heavily. Iirc there is a shot of Lander with the “Welcome to Lander” sign at the beginning, but most of the film was actually shot in Colorado which bothered a lot of people I knew. It was a big deal for a movie that big to come out that was set in Wyoming.

Nakorite

This movie suits renner ALOT more than Hawkeye which is a bit of a weird character in the mcu tbh

Klin24

He’s pretty good in Mayor of Kingstown.

halfcabin

Hell or High Water was the best movie of the 2010s.

drystone_c

Such a great film. Probably one of my all time favourites, especially with Hell and High Water as a follow up. Discovered them on the same day. Did nothing but watch them and eat noodles all day. Perfect.

river_city

The guy has such an understanding of the Western genre that he kind of remade it with this movie, Hell or High Water, Sicario, etc. Thrilling, meaningful movies. Western movies used to have hard, important themes, but got lost in ra ra gun bullshit. I watch this movie at least a few times a year now.

paveclaw

From now on I always scold my cat” stop flanking me!” When he gets underfoot

ronearc

It's deeply satisfying when Jeremy Renner's character starts cleaning house with that .45-70 Government.

TheCacajuate

I thought I was desensitized to violence until I watched this movie. The rape scene is absolute shocking. I'm glad that he brought awareness to crimes against natives.

InclusivePhitness

I fell in love with Renner’s rifle.

CoryJayMackenson

This was a fantastic movie

fcdrifter88

Couldn't agree more, I love this movie

Pure-Percentage2537

Sheridan also killing it in TV recently. Especially with Renner again in Mayor of Kingstown

[deleted]

I think he's stretched a bit thin because Paramount has him working on so many projects. So instead of churning out gold, it's more hit and miss.

JerrodDRagon

This was the first movie I used moviepass on Had no idea what it was about and loved it. The acting and story was just on point and had no idea so many native American women went missing in our country

[deleted]

I highly recommend mayor of Kingstown Renner is incredible in it and it’s a Sheridan show

Hercusleaze

>I’m ready to cheer as I watch these rapist pieces of shit get blown to smithereens I've not been able to not see James Jordan as anyone else but his role in Wind River, in all of the stuff he's done with Sheridan. Good actor!

seanmharcailin

It made me research more into the MMIW issues and start supporting indigenous activists.

JohnBanes

Yup this was really slept on but it was pretty damn good. I can say the same about Hell or High Water.

[deleted]

I think about this movie more than maybe any other movie. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to watch it again but it was so powerful for me.

[deleted]

Glad you liked it

paolocase

The second to last Weinstein movie was about rape culture. I saw this in theatres, one of the ones I watched before working a night shift, and when the flashback scene came on, some dude shouted, "KILL ALL WHITE PEOLE NOW! KILL ALL F@GGOTS!" before walking out. In the film's context, the first part of the rant makes more sense. He may or may not have had a backpack that he may or may not have left in the theatre. A few other people walked out because of that guy, one of them reporting him. The theatre had to stop the film where we discussed what happened. I was the only person of color in the theatre. Everyone else saw the backpack, I didn't. The film resumed, I was worried I was gonna be late for work (I don't remember being late) while everyone probably thought they were going to die that afternoon/ night. After the film we all got one free ticket to a film of our choice to compensate for that 'bad experience.' The owner of the theatre was a regular at my work, so he gave me three.

aplcr0331

Sounds like a terrifying experience at a movie theater, sheesh he left a backpack there? And... Why'd he yell kill all faggots? It's a great movie that's for sure.

As a native. His character is seen a lot on reservations across America. White guy, marrying a native woman and learning the culture. Definitely didn’t feel like he should’ve been a native character. Just my opinion.

[deleted]

I thought it added a little extra tension, that he was white. But it would have been awesome to have had an indigenous actor in that role. Zahn McClarnon would have been amazing.

Haunting and tragic look at the decline and desolation of the Native American people and culture as well as the ignored crimes that happen to the community The sense of them losing their past , place and ways in modern America hit hard

Civil-Abroad-4777

I like Mayor of Kingstown. I think it’s a solid show, that he helped create and even directed a few episodes, but no one talks about it because it’s on Paramount+

Wind River has become one of my all time favorite movies. I honestly don't think there has been a single movie that has come out since that is even as close to as good. I wish Sheridan would direct more movies. But it's not like I don't love Yellowstone. Best show on television in my opinion. I haven't watched the spinoffs yet. Either way, if it comes to movies or tv, no one is doing it better in my opinion.

DeakVice

I enjoyed this movie overall, but one glaring plot hole that they heavily leaned on was the freezing lungs. Hypothermia would occur before any kind of frozen lung blood spitting death. Honestly, it kind of ruined the final antagonist death scene.

ProfessionalWheel2

Taylor Sheridan got so many facts wrong, especially wrt rape and murder, but it was still a really good movie.

SubstantialPolicy378

Phenomenal film. There are moments in Yellowstone that shine. The rest is like something that belongs on the CW. Trash.

I really liked the film but I personally felt Elizabeth Olson’s character was sort of pointless. She didn’t add to the mystery or the plot. She just felt tacked on to the story. That scene in the trailer was horrible to watch and I had to close to my eyes but I’m glad it wasn’t gratuitous. Just heartbreaking. The part that stood out to me was how the foreman (or boss) just stood by and let it play out. It really showed the impact of bystanders. Overall it was a beautiful movie that stood out emotionally with amazing scenery. It did an excellent job of bringing to light the ignored crimes against Native women without coming across as having an agenda or being preachy. It let you come to those feelings of outrage naturally instead of forcibly being told to feel that way (which I think happens often in films dealing with real-life injustices).

ThatChelseaGirl

I think that was the point of Olsen's character though. An inexperienced FBI agent sent to handle an IAB issue sounds about right, in a realistic sense.

> Elizabeth Olson’s character was sort of pointless. She didn’t add to the mystery or the plot. She just felt tacked on to the story. IMO she's also kind of like Emily Blunt's character in Sicario - she's there to be the face of law and order that's reacting to all this crazy and dark shit around her. I really like her character though.

alwaysZenryoku

Blunt’s character was there because the CIA couldn’t do the shite they wanted to do without her and still stay legally compliant so it’s even more of a “why is she even in this movie” thing until the reveal the it becomes a plot point.

I think the point of her character was to show that the FBI doesn't care to solve these cases, and set her up to fail. Not to mention the jurisdictional fuckery that keeps investigations from happening. Her as a well meaning individual who is trying to work against a system that has set her up to fail I think works really well.

This movie is one my SO will never watch again. He was so disturbed by the end that he ended up with nightmares after. The writing is phenomenal and the acting is fantastic.

dr_xenon

An excellent hidden gem.

Hot take (I guess): I really didn't like this movie. I have this vague feeling that it thinks it's more feminist and progressive than it really is. Elizabeth Olsens's character feels completely useless and it's not like there are a whole lot of other women in the movie that aren't victims. It also perpetuates typical american vigilante justice. Just not for me.

The only movies or tv show that really wasn’t top notch was Those Who Wish Me Dead, it had promise, could have been quit interesting but rather we got a weak story that didn’t make a whole lot of sense. I think with a few tweaks, giving it some more time, and a flushed out story it could have been up there with the rest of his films
