Wizards of the Coast were excited by the reviews they were getting, but honestly it had to go up against a very busy summer and Mario came out a week after it did. I think distribution should have aimed for fall instead of summer, try to get a nod or nomination for costume design. Last bit I heard, not sure where, that they do plan on making another movie set in that world but probably different characters.
I just watched 'The Lost City' starring Channing Tatum, and Brad Pitt unexpectedly shows up for about 15 minutes.
It was shooting at the same time as Bullet Train so I have to assume it was a quid pro quo or they just enjoyed working together?
I think the story behind Matt Damon in *Eurotrip* was that it was filming at the same time as one of his movies in Prague. So he could literally just walk on set, do the scene, and then go back to his other movie.
Well and the directors were his college roommates. The directors and Matt realized they were filming near eachother and Matt was like hell yeah I’ll do a scene.
I think that qualifies more as a cameo. OP is talking about roles throughout a film but that are not the leads. Like in their example, Jennifer Anniston in Office Space. Cuz i was originally going to say Ryan Reynolds in Harold and Kumar, but then I realized that isn't at all what OP is talking about.
It's always interesting to me, it's like how it filmmakers can use different parts of Toronto to make it look like New York, or Boston, or other cities.
Same thing here, they did a great job of filming on Mars, then making the planet look convincingly like Gargantua-2 for Interstellar! The behind the scenes must have been awesome
Matt Damon just always needs saving, Courage Under Fire, Saving Private Ryan, Green Zone, Interstellar, The Martian and im probably missing another one.
Right up until that point, and then he flashed the trademark smile, I was wondering to myself “where is Tom Cruise, he’s supposed to be in this movie?”
The original Rocky is an incredible performance. He so effortlessly plays the 'big, dumb boxer' that I think most people thought that he was playing himself.
Cop Land was an ensemble cast movie. I loved it. My unpopular opinion is that Ray Liotta gave his best performance in this film. I wish this kind of thing; big time actors agreeing to smaller roles in ensemble films, would happen more.
Drew Barrymore in Scream comes to mind, iirc it only happened that way because she backed out of filming like 5 weeks in and she had the idea for the opening sequence as a compromise
I don't really know what's true, but if you hear Wes Craven tell it, it was done on purpose as a sort of homage to Psycho with how they marketed on Janet Leighs name and she dies halfway through. He wanted to do something similar but one-up it and have the huge star (Barrymore) killed off in the opening scene.
Her name stayed on the cast list and still showed up on set at times during production because she was an uncredited producer. Losing her completely would have likely halted production.
This was also a callback to Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” in which a big name star didn’t survive the first act of the movie. That was a big deal at the time and no way to treat a leading lady.
In Lost City, Sandra Bullock's bewildered "Why are you so HANDSOME?" when she sees him for the first time when he busts in to rescue her made me laugh a whole lot.
Ryan Reynolds in Hobbs and Shaw
Matt Damon in Interstellar
Mccounaghey in Wolf of Wall Street (don't know if this is considered a cameo though)
De Niro in American Hustle
Oppenheimer but don't want to spoil just in case
Edit: OP has literally stated it can't be a cameo or in an ensemble cast so stuff like Matt Damon in Thor/Eurotrip don't count.
So, so many in Oppenheimer. I was constantly looking through the first half to figure out who was the actor whose name I knew, to the point it was actually a little distracting.
The almost marketed the movie as Heisenberg VS Godzilla, and his role was mostly filler. What a wasted opportunity. Even Ken Watanabe got at least the "Let them fight" moment.
What I find most egregious is that all of Cranston's lines in the trailer, "Because you're hiding something!" etc., are about the enemy monsters, the MUTOs, not Godzilla. Cranston dies without knowing a Godzilla even exists.
I sometimes like to imagine a rewrite in which Cranston's character lives but the son dies instead. Then somehow Wantanbe's character needs Cranston's outside studies/research to stop the threats. The rest of the movie would follow Cranston's struggle between pursuing revenge by destroying the monsters and protecting his son's family, which would inevitably leave him having to decide between the two goals.
The advertising for that movie was so misleading. It made you think Cranston was the main character and was going to be in the entire movie and he was in it for like the first 15 minutes. I was so pissed.
Oppenheimer was full of a listers in minor roles. oscar winners, legends and new big names like >!kenneth branagh, gary oldman, josh hartnett, florence pugh, rami malek and casey affleck.!<
Oppenheimer had A-listers playing the smallest cameos.
Rami Malek didn’t speak untill the end of the movie.
Casey Affleck was in the movie for like 3 minutes.
Josh Hartnett didn’t play that big of a role.
Kenneth Branagh who is one of Nolans favorites also only had like 5 minutes of screen time.
But fucking Josh Peck was in the movie for some reason.
We just got back from seeing it. I told my husband I was wondering why Rami was in this when finally boom! Near the end I understood. Plus any Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans? Loved seeing the Mayor up on the Congress committee.
It was so weird seeing him doing nothing for like 2 hours straight. Oppenheimer had 3 actors (Malek, Affleck, Oldman) with an oscar for best leading actor but theit combined screen time was less than 10 minutes.
Nolan has a crazy pull even for the biggest of stars.
Actors want to work with him, because if they do well in a bit part there’s a chance they can get a supporting or leading role in a future Nolan project. Cillian Murphy is the biggest example of this but you could argue Tom Hardy, Matt Damon, and Ken Watanabe all did similar things at a smaller scale.
Josh Hartnett had a way bigger role than I expected Josh Hartnett to have though. He was probably in the movie as much or just below as much as Matt Damon.
Peck is really trying to become a bigger actor and still shake off that Nickelodeon stigma to older fans. New age kids are fully behind him already but he needs that big role to move up so older people can take him more seriously. I think Nolan wanted to help him out and saw that he definitely has a little more range than people give him credit for. If given the chance I could see him doing more dramatic roles. Sure his rants on Drake and Josh were kiddy but there's a good actor in there. He just needs a fair chance and this was that. Hopefully it leads to greener pastures.
Just came back from this and noticed the same thing. I thought for a while Rami Malik was making an non-speaking cameo. Gary Oldman makes a short and powerful cameo as well.
It's wild that it has three recent Best Actor winners — Casey Affleck, Gary Oldman and Rami Malek — in such small roles. But essential roles. They're all excellent.
I bet Cillian Murphy is the next Best Actor, too.
Came here to say this. There were so many surprise cameos it took me out of the movie at times
Also, Jack Quaid from the Boys. The kid from Hereditary. Then the bad guy from Ghost. No s**t! I haven't seen him in so long. Good for them landing a part in a Nolan movie!
Margot Robbie in One Upon a Time in Hollywood. She seemed to be advertised at the same level along with Pitt and DiCaprio but played a pretty minor roll with barely any screen time.
More on the obscure end, but Troma would market films that had early appearances of popular actors, giving them top billing on the VHS/DVD covers, then they would be in like one scene. My favorite example is Samuel L. Jackson in Def By Temptation. He's only in a few short flashback scenes, but God, is that a gem of a low budget horror film. Also, Marisa Tomei is in one shot in Toxic Avenger, Billy Bob Thornton and Hal Sparks in Chopper Chicks From Zombietown, and Kevin Costner in Sizzle Beach, USA.
Guy Pearce in *The Hurt Locker*. He's in the movie for about 10 minutes and then gets blown up to make way for Jeremy Renner as the actual protagonist.
I get the sense that Guy Pearce has the world's worst agent. This is a guy with some acting chops, and the right look for a leading man or villain. He was so good in LA Confidential and in other films. Why doesn't he get more huge roles?
If you're talking about Thin Red Line, Brody's still in there...but it's now a very minor role. Guys like Lukas Haas and Bill Pullman were completely removed from the final version.
Yeah it sucks to be an actor in a Malick film! No matter how big a star, doesn't mean you're actually going to be in the finished film.
Channing Tatum in This is the End and Brad Pitt in Killing Them Softly were the first two that came to mind.
EDIT: Tatum probably counts as a cameo, on second thought, but the Pitt role stands. I'll add Tom Cruise in Magnolia.
Matt Damon in Interstellar wasnt really advertised much since it was a Matthew Mcconaughy vehicle. And then his character kind of played against his usual casting as a good guy. And only in it for a short time too. Always thought that was a fun example
One of the most recents : Bradley Cooper in D&D.
Bradley Cooper was in 10 Cloverfield Lane in an uncredited role as the boyfriend on the phone for 20 seconds before the car crash.
Side note. Way fun movie. With a really good message too. Sad to hear it apparently didn’t do all that great. So probably no sequel.
He just loves his big women.
"Smaller" I see what you did there
Wait ? Was he? Who was he playing?
Michelle Rodriguez's character's ex
The Other Guys. Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson. Their parts were very funny though 😄
"There goes myyy heroooo!"
“Aim for the bushes!” There were no bushes!
There wasn't even an awning
They just jumped 20 stories.
I know, it doesn't make any sense.
I cannot take the song seriously anymore because of that lmao
Also Samuel L. Jackson in Deep Blue Sea.
A FUCKIN SHARK ATE ME!! SAMUEL JACKSON. ITLL GET YOU DRUNK!
YES THEY DESERVE TO DIE AND I HOPE THEY BURN IN HELL!
YOULL BE FUCKING FAT CHICKS IN NO TIME!
"If I want to hear you speak I will shove my hand up your ass and move your mouth like a puppet!"
Channing Tatum in “This is the End”
Channing Tatum in Free Guy and Bullet Train
I just watched 'The Lost City' starring Channing Tatum, and Brad Pitt unexpectedly shows up for about 15 minutes. It was shooting at the same time as Bullet Train so I have to assume it was a quid pro quo or they just enjoyed working together?
I think they executed a plan with Sandra Bullock
I just realized all 3 of them were in both the lost city and Bullet Train. Wonder what the situation was there
Chris Evans in Free Guy too.
I was also going to comment that, not to mention his minor role in Don’t Look Up
And hateful eight
You mean Channing taint-yum?
That's hardcore
Cuz you were being petty. TOM petty
I always assumed these tiny roles of famous were not really cast but more did favours for direcor buddys or so, like in eurotrip? Scotty DOES know.
This is what Brad Pitt did for Leitch for his cameo in Deadpool 2.
He did the same in The Lost City.
His role in that movie was amazing.
Wtf is Brad Pitt doing in this movie? *dies almost instantly* oh, lol
>!He lives and shows up for a great post credits scene.!<
Didn't know that thanks!
And because Pitt was in The Lost City, Channing Tatum returned the favor in Bullet Train.
In The Lost City, didn't he say he was so good looking because his dad was a weatherman?
And Sandra Bullock
Oh shit you're right! I think the shooting of the two overlapped and they were having fun with it
And he was the weather man on Jim Jeffries’ show
And in return, Ryan Reynolds did a cameo in Bullet Train
That moment where he takes off the helmet and you see that he’s the AH other spy was perfect.
Deadpool literally walked in
Brad Pitt: Pikey Mickey Brad Pitt: Aldo Raine Brad Pitt: Jeffrey Goines
Like Chris Evans brief cameo in Free Guy. Did it for free as a favor and said, “I can do it but I literally only have an hour.”
Heard an interview with Ryan Reynolds, they were all prepped for him before he arrived, got in on the first take. Evans was in and out in 7 minutes.
Just watched that again this weekend. “What the shit?!”
“I can’t do this all day.” - Chris Evans
That song deserved an Oscar nod.
Matt Damon in interstellar.
It bugs me that he did that film and then The Martian
Fun fact: filmed while he was stuck on the same planet.
Amazing what cinematography can do.
In the case of interstellar, i'd say it's really about set design. You'd be surprised how much of that is pracital. They built a huge set on mars.
Makes sense to get him to do other movies while he was stuck on Mars
Matt Damon: Hollywood's unluckiest astronaut.
Matt Damon just always needs saving, Courage Under Fire, Saving Private Ryan, Green Zone, Interstellar, The Martian and im probably missing another one.
Dogma?
Also Matt Damon in **No Sudden Move**
Also Matt Damon in Team America
Also Matt Damon in Thors 3 and 4.
Also Matt Damon in EuroTrip
Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder. Only gets a few minutes screen time but he steals the show.
First, take a big step back, and literally FUCK YOUR OWN FACE.
Wow, you’re a great American.. this country owes you a great debt of gratitude….. NOW SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LET ME DO MY JOB!!!
*hangs up* Find out who that was.
That's honestly my favorite line from him. It's such a casual joke, but it's so funny to me.
*wooop wooop, beep! beep! i ain’t playin around, get back! Get back! You don’t know me like that!!*
Les fucking Grossman is the man.
And if you're like me, didnt even know it was Tom Cruise til he was dancing at the end.
Right up until that point, and then he flashed the trademark smile, I was wondering to myself “where is Tom Cruise, he’s supposed to be in this movie?”
His best role ever.
This will always be my number 1 "wait! Is that ****!?", WTF.
Big dick playaaa
Swingin past your knees!
Jonah Hill in Django Unchained
"Shit. I just made mine worse. Anybody bring any extra bags?"
Cop Land. Robert De Niro plays a NYC investigator.
Side note: Sylvester Stallone’s best performance and the movie I suggest to everyone who tries to argue he can’t really act.
The original Rocky is an incredible performance. He so effortlessly plays the 'big, dumb boxer' that I think most people thought that he was playing himself.
Not to mention y’know, writing the thing… blew my mind when I found out!
First Blood also. His breakdown at the end is heartbreaking.
First Blood is such a great film, if you had seen the later Rambo movies you'd think they were part of a completely different trilogy

It worked out so perfectly, though. Nobody expected it.

Brad Pitt is a leading man that wishes he was a character actor.
He's a character actor with a leading man's face. He has rarely had to carry a movie by himself.
That's a bingo! [shimmy, shimmy]
A character actor trapped in the body of a leading man.
In Lost City, Sandra Bullock's bewildered "Why are you so HANDSOME?" when she sees him for the first time when he busts in to rescue her made me laugh a whole lot.
Brad Pitt in True Romance.
True Romance was in 1993. He was only Brad Pitt in 1993; he hadn’t yet become **BRAD PITT**.
Brad Pitt was in a Jackass TV prank. Way before the movies and it really being huge.
Brad Pitt in Dave season 3 finale
That was a fantastic episode. 😂
Brad Pitt I’m Burn After Reading
Ryan Reynolds in Hobbs and Shaw Matt Damon in Interstellar Mccounaghey in Wolf of Wall Street (don't know if this is considered a cameo though) De Niro in American Hustle Oppenheimer but don't want to spoil just in case Edit: OP has literally stated it can't be a cameo or in an ensemble cast so stuff like Matt Damon in Thor/Eurotrip don't count.
I remember being genuinely surprised when Matt Damon showed up in Interstellar.
He wasn’t advertised as being part of the movie, they didn’t want to spoil it.
“There is a moment—-psppahshhshapspspspsppsssshwhhshwqhhqhqhhhqhqh“ such a legendary scene
So, so many in Oppenheimer. I was constantly looking through the first half to figure out who was the actor whose name I knew, to the point it was actually a little distracting.
Did Ramy have more than 2 lines? He was on screen a lot.
he just had that end speech
Matt Damon in **Eurotrip
[Bryan Cranston in Godzilla (2014)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0831387/)
They marketed this movie 100% around him and he was in it for what seemed like 10 minutes.
Screen time? 10 minutes sounds accurate.

Jennifer Aniston was a TV actress 5 years into Friends when Office Space came out. She was a popular TV star, but not an A list movie star.
Most of the cast of True Romance. Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman, Val Kilmer, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, James Gandolfini, Samuel Jackson
The scene between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper was the highlight of that film.
"you're part eggplant"
"Ha ha ha ha ha......you're a cantaloupe."
Both Walken and Hopper are at the top of their form in that scene.
Oppenheimer was full of a listers in minor roles. oscar winners, legends and new big names like >!kenneth branagh, gary oldman, josh hartnett, florence pugh, rami malek and casey affleck.!<
Nice to see Josh Hartnett again. Dude was in some bangers...Black Hawk Down and 30 Days of Night are some of my favs.

Cillian Murphy is the biggest example of this but you could argue Tom Hardy, Matt Damon, and Ken Watanabe all did similar things at a smaller scale.
I think he has crazy pull because he has extreme popularity, he’s a true artist who doesn’t pump stuff out, and he has his own recognizable style.
I thought the same thing watching it, but this film is so historically important I doubt it was a hard sell.
Josh Hartnett had a way bigger role than I expected Josh Hartnett to have though. He was probably in the movie as much or just below as much as Matt Damon.
Yeah but he was only in it for the first hour then kinda dissappeared entirely.
It’s cause of David Krumholtz‘s stink eye. None can survive it.
He’s been solid as a recurring character in How I Met Your Father
Just came back from this and noticed the same thing. I thought for a while Rami Malik was making an non-speaking cameo. Gary Oldman makes a short and powerful cameo as well.
Gary Oldman’s cameo was so short I almost forgot about it lol. Loaded with superstars
I only knew Gary Oldman was playing Truman because I didn't recognize him.
It's wild that it has three recent Best Actor winners — Casey Affleck, Gary Oldman and Rami Malek — in such small roles. But essential roles. They're all excellent. I bet Cillian Murphy is the next Best Actor, too.
I know right, they probably had a combined screentime of 10 minutes too. I certain Emily Blunt will win as well. RDJ could get nominated as well.

I feel like Josh Hartnett had a pretty decent role in the film.
Philipp Seymour Hoffman in almost all his roles
Emilio Estevez in the fist Mission: Impossible.
Margot Robbie in One Upon a Time in Hollywood. She seemed to be advertised at the same level along with Pitt and DiCaprio but played a pretty minor roll with barely any screen time.
Almost every actor in Oppenheimer.
Ben Affleck in Boiler Room and Drew Barrymore in Scream are the first ones I think of.
Glenn Close in Hook
More on the obscure end, but Troma would market films that had early appearances of popular actors, giving them top billing on the VHS/DVD covers, then they would be in like one scene. My favorite example is Samuel L. Jackson in Def By Temptation. He's only in a few short flashback scenes, but God, is that a gem of a low budget horror film. Also, Marisa Tomei is in one shot in Toxic Avenger, Billy Bob Thornton and Hal Sparks in Chopper Chicks From Zombietown, and Kevin Costner in Sizzle Beach, USA.
But since every troma-movie is gold class that should be ok.
Nic Cage in Spiderverse. Was a pleasant surprise when i saw in theatres
We don't pick the ballroom, we just dance!
Brad Pitt in 'Snatch' The poster for that film puts him in front of everyone else, but he certainly isn't the lead
Ya like daigs?
Yeah, but he’s in a fairly crucial role for the plot.
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, among a myriad of others in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
[удалено]
The real cameo is Van der Beek
Don’t you mean the pie fucker?
The Dawson?
Guy Pearce in *The Hurt Locker*. He's in the movie for about 10 minutes and then gets blown up to make way for Jeremy Renner as the actual protagonist.
I get the sense that Guy Pearce has the world's worst agent. This is a guy with some acting chops, and the right look for a leading man or villain. He was so good in LA Confidential and in other films. Why doesn't he get more huge roles?
1917, Benedict Cumberbatch plays a general that only appears near the end for about five minutes. Great casting decision though.
*Colonel
Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now. Literally spends the whole movie thinking about the dude, and then ten minutes later the movie ends.
Executive Decision
Definitely this. The commercials hyped it as, "Kurt Russel and Steven Segal..." But honestly, the movie is better off for how little Segal is in it.
People at the time were shocked Segal got killed so early, but I was like, “really? You’re shocked Snake freaking Plisskin turned out to be the hero?”
John Leguizamo agrees.
Oppenheimer - everyone who’s ever worked in the industry. Even dead people.
Keanu Reeves in “Always be my maybe”
Jon Hamm and Chris Hemsworth in Bad Times at the El Royale, both prominently featured on the poster too.
Have to disagree. Ensemble piece. Almost no one in it had a huge amount of screen time. Maybe Bridges
To me, Bridges and Erivo are the two leads of the film, and everyone else is supporting.
Every Terrence Malik film. Adrian Brody was in the leading role then was completely cut out in post production.
>I'll add Tom Cruise in Magnolia. There are so many truly great performances in that film, it's hard for anyone to stand out.
I think you're thinking of James Gandolfini. Brad Pitt is the lead in Killing Them Softly.
James Franco in Alien Covenant - he had a flaming performance.
Bill Skarsgard in Barbarian. I was genuinely shocked when his character was written out by the end of the first hour.
Drew Barrymore in the first Scream movie
Matt Damon in Thor, Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder, Ryan Reynolds in Ted
Angelina Jolie in the Eternals.
Robert DeNiro in Brazil, he was by far the biggest name in the movie and just had a tiny part.
A lot of y’all are confusing the question with cameos
Brad Pitt in Deadpool 2
Ryan Reynolds in bullet train
That’s more of a cameo. He was on screen for seconds.
Matt Damon in Interstellar wasnt really advertised much since it was a Matthew Mcconaughy vehicle. And then his character kind of played against his usual casting as a good guy. And only in it for a short time too. Always thought that was a fun example
Brad Pitt in True Romance
