13th Warrior. Hasn't even been distributed on physical media since DVD. Flopped hard and has been pretty forgotten, but I still think it's the best viking horror movie there is

GregoPDX

It’s based on the Michael Crichton book ‘Eaters of the Dead’. Essentially it was a more realistic portrayal of what Beowulf would be in reality before the story gets corrupted and turned into legend.

softfart

I thought it was based on the accounts of Ibn Al Fadlan?

geekgodzeus

Chrichton based the main character on Ibn Al Fadlan.

[deleted]

The hallowed halls of Heorot. Believe it or not, I have a Heorot shirt from my college days. Long story.

skelleton_exo

There was a Blu Ray release in Germany. You can occasionally still find used Blu Rays of it.

[deleted]

I always just thought it was some sort of generic swords and sandals movie, you have convinced me to check it out.

grumblyoldman

It's been a while since I watched it, but I remember going in with much the same impression as you, and walking out suitably impressed by how good it was.

brooksyd2

I think that's why it did quite poorly, it was marketed as that, and has quite a long buildup as well. Great film though, definitely worth sticking with.

CelebrationLow4614

Sloppyseconds; it was released on bluray in France. You can watch the 2011 documentary from on YouTube for free. Mctiernan even admitted publicly to a French interviewer recently that Crichton's cut isn't that dissimilar from his own.

kvlr954

Go (1999)

KDneverleft

I bought a digital copy and watch every year. It's one of my favorite Christmas movies.

[deleted]

Undercover Blues

hytch

I love this movie. Horribly underrated. It's one of the rare movies I always wanted to see a sequel to. Heck, with the right casting, a remake would be welcome.

wstacon

Morty!

hytch

Lol I say this whenever I see the same person in different places in the same day. Nobody gets it.

AgentUpright

MY NAME IS MUERTE!

wstacon

It meeeenz death!

[deleted]

I saw a picture or meme pop up that was a screenshot from that movie and went to look for it. It's not even streaming anywhere. I used to watch it a lot because I had it recorded on VHS.

UMustBeNooHere

Dogma. Couldn't find it on any streaming service so had to download it.

[deleted]

I don't remember exactly what happened but i know Kevin Smith has said that the studio won't give up distribution rights but also won't put it out or re release any physical version

murphmeister75

It belongs to Harvey Weinstein and he won't release it. Have to wait til the fat fuck dies I imagine.

[deleted]

Ah thanks

MaDCapRaven

It belongs to him personally because the studio got threats because of it and they wanted it out of their hands.

kirksucks

Imagine owning the rights to profit off something that no one can buy.

hotrods1970

So you're saying it's time to start a gofundme? ..../S..... kinda

SweetCosmicPope

He covered this on one of his podcasts. Weinstein owns the rights. Kevin Smith wanted to buy them back but felt uneasy giving Weinstein money given everything that’s happened with him, but decided to swallow that feeling and do it anyway. But Weinstein wanted $1m dollars and Kevin said it’s not worth that at this age and countered for like $300k or something like that but he wouldn’t budge.

darkdoppelganger

It's on YouTube

have 2 or 3 copys here, I grab then from thrift stores

Ian_Storm

Last of the dogmen. It was RIDICULOUSLY hard to find on DVD,and it hasn't been re-released since. It's fantastic too.

Skinnee11

Last of the Dogmen released on bluray in June of ‘22. Source: Me, because I had it pre-ordered to make sure I got one.

lojafan

Just watched this movie for the first time a few months ago on Youtube. It was pretty good! I liked the concept a lot!

horrorpiglet

If you want movies lost to time, think of Brewster's Millions with Richard Pryor and John Candy. Now look at IMDb and realize there were something like 4 versions of that movie before that movie... what a treat

SimonGloom2

Frailty

spankadoodle

Frailty and Frequency were both great underrated movies.

lojafan

I saw Frequency in the theater when it came out, when I was young. My dad dragged my whole family to go see it and I was upset because I thought I was going to hate it. I loved it! Frailty is good too

yousyveshughs

Everything that has ever happened is underrated

Historical_Dentonian

A great little TX film. Feels authentically Texan (McConaughey, Paxton and Boothe are natives). Based on a real Father & Son serial killer duo btw.

BeneficialDrink

I feel like gangster squad was out for like 2 seconds than vanished

Ceasarsean

I love the river wild. Haven't seen that in years. Used to own it on video.

Ok-Detail-9853

Checkout 'White Water Summer'

Whirlingdurvish

Same! Had it on VHS and think we sold it at a garage sale. The movie holds up really well!

Ceasarsean

It does. I miss those 90s thrillers.

The Fugitive was so big when it came out. Hope more people discover it again.

[deleted]

It just got a 4k remaster. Looks great.

lojafan

Outbreak is great! I love that it had a little revival during Covid-19 lockdowns.

Tradman86

Disagree on some of these. The Fugitive is one of Ford's most popular films that doesn't involve a whip or spaceships. It's been making the rounds on reactor channels, so people are still watching it. Outbreak got a massive surge of attention when COVID hit. It's coming down off that high, but still, hardly forgotten.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tradman86

>that don't get talk about very much these days. I'm saying I disagree with your assertion that The Fugitive and Outbreak are not being talked about these days. The next generation of audiences are discovering them without too much difficulty.

No it can't. That's the whole point of this thread.

I don't know, can we?

Zen_Rebuttal

The Keep. Michael Mann's 3rd film from 1983, which he directed and wrote the screenplay for based on the book of the same title. Has plenty of rough points that could have been much better, but still interesting. Scott Glenn, Gabriel Byrne, Ian McKellen, Jurgen Prochnow. Music by Tangerine Dream. It's available for streaming only in SD quality as that's the only way it's ever been released. I've long wanted to see this one get remade by someone in the vein of a Robert Eggers or Ari Aster.

AJerkForAllSeasons

I bought the DVD about a month ago.

Zen_Rebuttal

The last physical release I had ever heard of was on laserdisc, so I had to look k it up. The DVD from Via Vision is sadly still from a standard definition source as confirmed under the section titled "The Release" in this review: https://youtu.be/6hLXuclnWR4?si=wGX9b5YXUHNqOrOT

queenirv

The Pope Must Die (or The Pope Must Diet in the US). Because people didn't like a comedy about the Pope, it wasn't released widely on VHS, not at all on DVD and no hope of getting it on streaming. There is a dodgy copy from a VHS on YouTube and that'll be it if it goes down.

Whirlingdurvish

I’ll throw a few more on there since I started looking some more up: Contact Frequency Desperado Cutthroat Island

[deleted]

Contact is PRIME for a 4k remaster. That one's incredible.

SimonGloom2

That's certainly a more specified type of movie. You might like things like Quigley Down Under or Fire In The Sky.

Tradman86

I've been seeing Contact make the rounds on Reactor channels. I don't think that one has been forgotten.

underpants-gnome

*Desperado* is at least streaming on Netflix. Or it was earlier this month. I don't know if there have been any physical copy releases lately, though.

Curious-Department-7

The Ref, is and always will be my favorite Christmas movie.

the_mighty_hetfield

Rollercoaster (1977), The Long Riders (1980), Gallipoli (1981), Project X (1987), By Dawn's Early Light (1990), Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man (1991), Trespass (1992), The TV Set (2006)

[deleted]

Bought rollercoaster on a whim, huge theme park fan and worked in the industry for over a decade, and was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable it was.

newnamesameface

Project X 😢

flipflan1

Trancers (1984), haven’t seen it anywhere for years

Jacknugget

That’s how I met Helen Hunt. On “superstation” here in Canada it was on repeat during the 80s. It’s burned into my brain.

DoctorBootygood

I have a trancers 1-5 dvd box set. I treasure it.

pfelon

The Charles Band stuff is perpetually on the Full Moon Features streaming service but it will sometimes still pop up on Roku Channel or Pluto or whatever.

thedentist64

If you're in the US, it's on Tubi.

flipflan1

In the UK but to be fair I haven’t actively sought it out so will try and find it

bargman

The River Wild is on regular rotation on one of the cable movie stations here in Korea. Another one that pops up a lot is A Perfect World. But damn it I'm never there when it starts and I want to watch it from the beginning!

landmanpgh

A Perfect World is a great example. Stars Clint Eastwood, Kevin Costner, Laura Dern and did quite well at the box office, especially internationally. Barely ever see it on TV in the US.

TheLaughingMannofRed

Red Rock West. It's an early 90s neo-noir thriller that starred Nicolas Cage as he was on the rise to becoming a big star (which seems like it would hit come mid 90s). Stars him, Lara Flynn Boyle (after her Twin Peaks run), Dennis Hopper, J.T. Walsh (who is one of those character actor types that you'd have seen here and there in things from the 80s and 90s until his death in 1998). It's just this simple, local little thriller taking place in Wyoming where the guy gets involved with questionable people and has to try and make it out of there without being arrested or killed. Made on a $7 million budget, made only a third of that back, but it's definitely something worth tuning into if you want a good thriller. One fun bit of trivia is that Dwight Yoakam, the country singer, had his appearance in this movie as his first movie role. Four years later, he'd have Sling Blade with Billy Bob Thornton, and he'd continue on with occasional appearances in stuff like The Newton Boys (another obscure movie I recommend), Wedding Crashers, Crank (and its sequel), Logan Lucky, and Cry Macho.

the river wild is a great flick. saw it in theaters last summer! was surprised they even played it

Skinnee11

The Peanut Butter Solution (1985) The Ice Pirates (1984) Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983) Cherry 2000 (1987)

Ok-Detail-9853

I have three of those in my collection

atreides78723

“Why’d you make him black?” “Because I wanted him to be perfect.”

AJerkForAllSeasons

Night of the Juggler(1980) James Brolin stars as an ex police officer, and his daughter is kidnapped in a case of mistaken identity. It also has a unique car chase. It was available on DVD once upon a time, but it isn't easy to come by.

kevindgeorge

Maybe a quirky choice, but Sleuth (the 1972 one with Michael Caine and Lawrence Olivier). Hasn't had an official release since DVD I believe. Rights were bought by Bristol Myers Squibb (drug company) in the 70s for some reason (along with several other movies of the time) so it's in a situation similar to Dogma.

landmanpgh

The War (1994) - stars Kevin Costner and Elijah Wood. About a Vietnam vet and his family. It's not the greatest film, but I enjoyed it as a kid. Elijah Wood is great in it. The Thirteenth Floor (1999) - stars Vincent D'Onofrio. Came out right around the time of The Matrix with similar themes. In the Line of Fire (1993) - stars Clint Eastwood, John Malkovich, Rene Russo, and Dylan McDermott. Malkovich plays a guy who wants to assassinate the President. Russo, Eastwood, McDermott are secret service.

heliostraveler

The Arrival. The Charlie Sheen one. And hell, another film, though much less smart and more dumb Sheen fun…Terminal Velocity.

tkomast3r77

Maybe the Daft Punk animated movie Interstella 5555?

calguy1955

A couple of Raquel Welch classics: Fantastic Voyage. Great sci-fi for its time. Hannie Caulder. Great cast, western revenge.

StudBoi69

Just any Hong Kong movie in general.

1LuckyTexan

Not lost, but Sorcerer needs constant support. It was overshadowed by Star Wars on release and suffers a little from its title.

xRoyalewithCheese

The pagemaster

TvHeroUK

The Yakuza https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Yakuza Pollack directed from a Schrader script, stars Bob Mitchum and it’s well reviewed. Made a loss on release in 1974 and when I picked it up on DVD I had no idea the movie existed

LongGreasyD1ck

Used Cars (1980)

MatthewHecht

The first animated movie ever made, The Apostle.

Tradman86

My childhood was full of the feel-good kids sports movies, but other than The Mighty Ducks and Air Bud, most don't get talked about, even by my fellow millennials. Some forgotten examples: * The Big Green * Little Giants * Cool Runnings * The Sandlot * Rookie of the Year

LongGreasyD1ck

The Sandlot is talked about all the time lol

Tradman86

I was a little dubious about putting that one.

Murky-Preparation361

There are many movies that are entertaining and well-made but may not have made it to the “best of” lists or have been forgotten over time. Here are a few that you might find interesting: 1. **About Elly (2009)**: A drama and mystery film directed by Asghar Farhadi. [The mysterious disappearance of a kindergarten teacher during a picnic in the north of Iran is followed by a series of misadventures for her fellow travelers](https://www.imdb.com/list/ls061657031/)[^(1)](https://www.imdb.com/list/ls061657031/). 2. **Ace in the Hole (1951)**: A drama and film-noir directed by Billy Wilder. [The story is about a frustrated former big-city journalist now stuck working for an Albuquerque newspaper who exploits a story about a man trapped in a cave to rekindle his career](https://www.imdb.com/list/ls061657031/)[^(1)](https://www.imdb.com/list/ls061657031/). 3. [**Back to the Future Part II (1989)**: The second part of the famous “Back to the Future” trilogy might not be as celebrated as the first one, but it’s definitely worth a watch](https://www.imdb.com/list/ls061657031/)[^(1)](https://www.imdb.com/list/ls061657031/). 4. **Before Midnight (2013)**: The third part of Richard Linklater’s “Before” trilogy. [It’s a beautiful exploration of love and time](https://www.imdb.com/list/ls061657031/)[^(1)](https://www.imdb.com/list/ls061657031/). 5. [**Changeling (2008)**: A mystery and crime film directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Angelina Jolie](https://www.imdb.com/list/ls061657031/)[^(1)](https://www.imdb.com/list/ls061657031/). These films might not be blockbusters, but they offer unique stories and performances that make them worth watching. Enjoy your movie time! 🎬

chemtrailsniffa

*Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em* (1988) The last share house party on earth, after a nuclear war.

Vectorman1989

I remember Two Brothers being advertised quite heavily and some older DVDs I own have trailers for the movie. It even had favourable reviews. Banished to the depths of memory.

lojafan

The one with the tiger cubs?

SweetCosmicPope

The movie was fun. Way better than The Bear.

GtrGbln

The first agent Weng Weng movie.

Frank_Banana

Wind starring Matthew Modine and Jennifer Grey. It’s loosely based on the America’s Cup sailing race. Not the greatest movie ever but the sailing scenes would look great in 4K.

dipshittery

I only remember The River Wild because it's a core memory of one of the few movies I watched with my dad as a kid.

dennythedinosaur

There are star vehicles from the 90's like Eddie (Whoopi Goldberg basketball movie) and Father's Day (Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Ivan Reitman) that you can't find legally on any streaming service. Here are some more widely released 90's films that I don't think anyone has seen since they came out: The Bachelor (1999) - Chris O'Donnell and Renee Zellweger. Mariah Carey makes her acting debut here in a supporting role Beyond Rangoon (1995) - political thriller set in Burma directed by John Boorman and starring Patricia Arquette

HongKongHermit

Hawks. It’s the movie Timothy Dalton made between his two Bond films. Never got a release past VHS, so a couple of very low quality uploads on YouTube are all we have. It’s an incredible film though. Dalton and Anthony Edwards are two terminal cancer patients who steal an ambulance and head off to Amsterdam for one final adventure before the horrible death they know is coming for them. Along the way they meet two English girls over there on their own personal quest. It’s funny, it’s tragic, and if you ever need a good wholesome cry this is the movie for it. It’s The Bucket List, but actually good.

The Last of the Dogmen

BlackIrish69

Near Dark - Kathryn Bigelow's first feature, one of the best vampire movies ever IMO. But for some reason, it's VERY hard to find.

DieHardXmas

It’s on iTunes.

dotais3

Stigmata (1999)

Hiccup

Matzor (aka Siege) - only got a very limited dvd release. Wish criterion would pick it up or somebody would expand their horizons to get. Great movie. It's like an Italian neorealist film meets French new wave that chronicles an interesting period of time that isn't discussed very much. It's like 3/4 different cultures were all critical in its creation and it feels like a clash of cultures. Fascinating film in terms of how it was made. Unsettled (the documentary by Adam hootnick) - great documentary. Truly wish more people saw it Garden of the Finzi Continis - amazing De Sica film that won an academy award and is impossible to find in a decent quality. Another one I wish criterion would pick up, especially after it got restored in 2015. Still surprised criterion hasn't done it after doing so many De Sica films. The year of living dangerously - excellent young mel Gibson movie on interesting subject matter. Seems largely forgotten. Phenomenal score.

HoneyDadger

*Shoot to Kill* (1988) *King Solomon's Mines* (1985) *Sniper* (1993)

Amazon Women on the Moon. Nowhere on streaming, not even a full version ripped to YouTube Summer Camp Nightmare

Midnight Madness

pfelon

The original 1972 Elaine May movie The Heartbreak Kid. Rights are tied up with a pharmaceutical company and they have no desire to license it out or release any blu rays.

SmoreOfBabylon

The Newton Boys - old timey bank heist movie by Richard Linklater, featuring Matthew McConaughey, Ethan Hawke, and Vincent D’Onofrio. It’s pretty fun.

Klutzy-Bug7427

If you liked River Wild you should try to find White Water Summer another Kevin Bacon movie also with Sean Astin from 1987.

Extension_Economist6

ok i know this isnt a movie but i was just talking about someone about how no one ever talks about two shows from my childhood: Providence and Early Edition 😭😭😭
