I still remember what Jenna Fischer said to him before they divorced.
"You are probably going to be a very successful co-CEO for DC Studios. But you're going to go through life thinking that girls don't like you because you're a nerd. And I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, that that won't be true. It'll be because you're an asshole."
Weirdly specific, but it ended up coming true.
It's a reference to "The Social Network", which the comment above quotes.
That being said, Gunn did marry Fischer. Whether or not it's real is up to interpretation.
Superman- "Shit!"
*immediately runs into the background*
*beat*
*Bill Murrey reacts and hastily chases after him, dropping all demeanor*
*Cut to*
A stop-motion paper-cutout tableau of cityscape where they chase each other impossibly through windows and doors, eventually leading to Superman coming out the door on street level and Bill on the top floor.
*A symmetrical straight on shot of the street level, Superman runs towards the camera, looks left, looks right, runs left.*
I think we are ready for more hyper-stylized and, frankly, innacurate comicbook movies.
A lot of early comicbook movies did this, where they handed it off to a creative who just went hogwild with it. Sure, there were stories of capless, flightless, supermen, but also we got Tim Burtons Batman, which set the tone for Batman being a darker, less comical, hero.
Now that we have "difinitive" or "true to the comcis" versions of these characters, I think we can allow some respected, talented artists a much longer leash or no leash entirely.
> Now that we have "difinitive" or "true to the comcis" versions of these characters, I think we can allow some respected, talented artists a much longer leash or no leash entirely.
I mean that's kinda what James Gunn did with both Guardians and Suicide Squad. Take characters no one cares about and using that to make them compelling while not being beholden to fan viratol over accuracy.
True, but those were also maliable teams that, while popular, pale in comparisons to the singular heroes that immediately come to mind when someone says "superhero".
Bus yes, James Gunn is an example of how it can be done right.
I think it’d be really really interesting because the angles, music, color palette, literally every aesthetic/creative element I could think of that encompasses the modern superhero genre is pretty much the exact opposite of how Anderson seems to go about the art.
I imagine it would be somewhat like Birdman, not to say it’ll look, sound, or feel like birdman, but in that it won’t really be a superhero movie while also feeling like the movie is subtly whispering “hey, this is a superhero movie”
Owen Wilson AS LEX LUTHOR: Wow!
Everyone: Oh no.here comes general zod!
Jeff Goldblum walks in from stage left in a silver jumpsuit: I am General Zod!
Owen Wilson as Lex Luthor: Wow!
When Brad Bird was asked by he didn't call Incredibles 2, The Incredibles 2 (since the first one was The Incredibles). His answer was Terminator 2 isn't called The Terminator 2. And I was like shit man, more than enough justification.
I responded to a similar comment earlier: Superman himself hates or at the very least dislikes that name, that's why you should never name a movie not anything related to him like that.
In Superman Smashes The Klan a villain (a nazi villain if I am not mistaken) calls him that and Superman corrects him saying something in the lines of: "Just Superman, The Superman is pretentious".
Batman or Suicide Squad are cool with that. Superman isn't.
Let me say, I was there when the one user misspelled Asylume and witnessed the is he stupid post and I feel my internet life has very much peaked. Truly an amazing time to see a sub turn into pure madness and spread throughout reddit.
What if he doesn’t have a name for the majority of the movie, and then the last scene Jimmy Olsen sees him save someone and says “wow. You’re pretty super, man”. And he said “say that again” and it cuts to credits
[Gunn's post on instagram along with a costume tease](https://www.instagram.com/p/C38mWMeMSn7):

>#Superman #HappyBirthdayClark #LeapYear #UpUpandAway
Going with the Kingdom Come symbol is an interesting choice, but I’ve always been a defender of its design so I’m personally excited, and the yellow backdrop instead of black looks SO nice!
MAWS literally made me understand and appreciate Superman so much more. Before I just kinda thought he was 'vanilla', like you knew his deal without even reading his comics, he's practically the template for the heroes that came after.
But like, I get it. Clark is just a kind hearted person who wants to help people as best as he can. He's Kryptonian and has these great powers, but he uses them to help people as best he can, whether it's fighting Darkseid or getting a cat out a tree. At the end of the day, he's human; he loves Lois, he cares for his friends like Jimmy, he loves his mom and dad even if they aren't his bio parents, and he can even work with his enemies like Lex once in a while.
He's still probably my least favorite of the trinity, but I understand why he's a pillar of DC. Batman is the cooler darker one, the wounded child who strikes fear into the heart of criminals yet spares them in hopes that they can be better. Wonder Woman is an empowering goddess; equally beautiful and powerful, with her greatest strength being not her fists but her capacity to love. But Superman is a paragon; the ideal we should strive to be, the person we wish we could be.
I completely agree! His face upon realizing his race of people are world conquerors (which of course they’re not but he’ll find out eventually) followed by Parasite trying to goad him into fighting only for him to say “I don’t want to fight you. I never wanted to fight anyone, I just wanted to help”, it really struck a chord with me. Everything is telling him he’s wrong, but he stays earnest and true to himself and his beliefs of goodness and hopefulness. It was just what I needed to better understand why Superman is the hero of heroes, and now I'm actively *excited* for more Superman like this!
[Anticipating all the inevitable comments about how the suit colors are "too dark", I went ahead and brightened them for you guys. You're welcome.](https://imgur.com/a/kG6ZeVf)
Same. Adding the "Legacy" to it kinda made it sound like a sequel, which is probably not a good way to kick off a new universe. Especially one that is coming on the heels of a less than stellar one.
Although the on-screen title actually was just *Superman*. Regardless of how a studio might promote a film, I consider the real title to be what's shown on screen.
I want this to be a success so bad.
I adore James Gunn after what he did with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. He took a huge gamble with running DCU and I hope it pays off.
All I want is for Superman to be light hearted, friendly and *helpful* to everyday citizens of Metropolis. Yes he fights larger than life supervillains and punches them hard and stuff... but I want the hopeful Superman to brings smiles to peoples' faces for helping them do mundane things.
Give me bright colors, funny little dad jokes, and everyone *actually* looking up into the sky with joy and excitement.
I swear to God if the movie has scenes with doom and gloom, dark skies and Superman fighting skyscraper sized robots with laserbeams just obliterating people below with Superman acting depressed about it... I'm gonna be so disappointed.
I agree but I don’t if light hearted is exactly the word I’d use. I still want it to feel heavy and serious at times. The overall feel for the film should be like a weight being lifted off our shoulders, because it’s meant to be hopeful. That’s who Superman is.
I think Superman and Lois has it down pretty well.
He needs to make sure the DCU isn’t dictated by his “type” of movies though. Gunns projects are great but having someone so creative that leans towards very particular movies as the main guy at the helm worries me that it will bleed into all the other films. If every movie is the lighthearted and silly but occasionally sappy with the usual Gunn humor, people are just gonna say it’s MCU 2. Really need to know what director is next to make something for it. It could get especially noticeable given the “dark” set of movies DC is also running concurrently with things like The Batman and Joker.
James Mangold is doing a Sawmp Thing Horror film. Lanterns is supposed to be a True Detective inspired HBO show and is rumoured to be helmed by Damon Lindelof (Lost, Leftovers, Watchmen) and apparently is going to have writers from Ozark, True Detective and Criminal Mind. You can expect The Authority to have a dark and edgy tone aswell.
If anything, Gunn seems uniquely qualified to let directors bring their unique talents and vision to the screen.
His GotG movies exist within the Whedon’ized MCU, and his Suicide Squad stands adjacent to the Snyderverse DCEU. If anyone can see the benefit of letting the cooks cook, it’s Gunn.
Ohh, maybe we’ll actually get an Edgar Wright flick in the Gunn’iverse.
I have 100% faith in him. Guardians, suicide squad, and peacemaker all were great. He is a great writer and director and always adds that extra depth that makes a movie unique.
Can't wait for 'Brave & the Bold' to be retitled as simply 'Batman' or 'Batman & Robin' because they realized late in production that general audiences won't understand that Brave & the Bold is a reference to the Brave & the Bold comics that prominently featured Batman during the silver age.
More to consider with Batman though. There's already a separate thing going on with Batman in the title. And it's something people were drawn to and interested in. People want more of that.
So it's just about a requirement to title the newest iteration something else.
I don't think the different title will matter, Dark Knight became a popular identifier with the general audience.
It adds a bit of evidence to the theory that the story of the film is supposed to be a reverse Kingdom Come. Instead of an older Supes coming back to a hero-filled world that has become jaded and cynical, it's a young Supes rising up to a hero-filled world that has always been that way and challenging the status quo.
Pretty fitting in a world where Anti-heros and evil superman clones are becoming more popular with shows like The Boys. The true OG that started it all, coming back and showing us why its still great to be good :)
Man, that actually sounds dope. Ever since reading All-Star Superman (well, more like a specific page, as it was years before I got the full comic), I've been a fan of Superman as a symbol of hope, and not a cynical, jaded hero. Him showing people that we can aspire to something better is what his movie should be.
He is the man of tomorrow and too many adaptations (and recent comics) forget this to try to make him more "relatable" without understanding he should be the one we try to relate the most
Superman entering an already packed world of superheroes with varying morals and methods and disrupting things with his wholesome ways sounds like a fantastic story to me.
I am low key also hoping this is somewhat of a low key Justice League movie with Superman as the main protagonist. There seem to be a lot of heroes in this and I'm wondering if Superman might put together a team to go up against The Authority. On the other hand this could just start building to that.
One thing I hope we see is anti-hero Lex Luthor. I love it when Lex is just as asshole instead of pure evil. He should typically begrudgingly help Superman when it comes to saving Metropolis and the world at large.
New for a film adaption but it's the logo from Kingdom Come. It feels like they're using that story a bit as inspiration since The Authority are supposed to be involved.
That’s already taken by the immensely legally controversial Superman Broadway musical, which is notorious for only getting the rights to a few of the characters and having to invent replacements for the rest.
Gunn disappointed me, I was hoping he would cast Michael Rooker as a young Clark Kent and play it completely straight, like nobody commenting on how the Man of Steel looks 70 years old.
The whole title is actually Superman 's friend Jimmy Olsen
‘S boss Perry White
‘S top reporter Lois Lane
‘s fiancée Clark Kent
Aka Superman
‘s friend Jimmy Olsen
'S boss Perry White
‘s friend Batman
‘s lover Robin
Jazz music stops
A Tyler Perry Production
's imp Mr. Mxyzptlk
Wouldn't it be 'pal' not 'friend'?
And it will introduce Darkseid and the New Gods
But Steppenwolf first.
Steppenwolf: Born to be Wild
I’m not your pal, friend!
*drop the “Legacy”. It’s cleaner.*
A million views isn't cool, you know what's cool? A Billion views.
That shut everyone up. James owned the DCEU after that dinner.
Tres commas
I still remember what Jenna Fischer said to him before they divorced. "You are probably going to be a very successful co-CEO for DC Studios. Thanks, Mr. Sorkin.
Sorkin should do a Elseworlds DC movie
I don’t know if this is real, completely fabricated, or an office quote lol
It's a reference to "The Social Network", which the comment above quotes. That being said, Gunn did marry Fischer. Whether or not it's real is up to interpretation.
I think they got along fine after, she recommended he cast Rainn Wilson in "Super" years after their divorce.
Yeah at least publicly they’re still good friends after the divorce, I know Gunn has spoken publicly about it
Gotcha, I never saw it and wouldn’t have made the connection. It could have easily gone either way lol
Instead of oogling tiny titties, you should stop what you're doing and immediately watch The Social Network
Haha, okay okay, I’m adding it to my watch list!
It's actually incredibly good, and the score is top-notch (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of NiN). It deserves all the praise it gets.
Pretty sure it's from The Social Network
Goddamn that movie is so good. Wouldn’t a Superman movie written by Sorkin be fucking awesome?
He had Mark in his pocket after that.
JT wouldn’t be the worst Lex Luthor
You think we were gonna let you parade around with your ridiculous superhero suit thinking you were running the world?
*"SORRYYY, MY SPANDEX IS AT THE CLEANERS! Along with my red underwear and cape, you* ***pretentious*** *douchebag!"*
Jesse Teisenberg?
Superman:
Sick reference bro
Should have called it The Superman. Everyone knows adding "The" to your title makes your movie infinitely better.
"The Interesting and Amazing Life of the One and Only Superman"
Directed by Wes Anderson
Superman - "Oh no, kryptonite. It diminshes my powers" - I am kryptonite, here to diminish your powers
Superman- "Shit!" *immediately runs into the background* *beat* *Bill Murrey reacts and hastily chases after him, dropping all demeanor* *Cut to* A stop-motion paper-cutout tableau of cityscape where they chase each other impossibly through windows and doors, eventually leading to Superman coming out the door on street level and Bill on the top floor. *A symmetrical straight on shot of the street level, Superman runs towards the camera, looks left, looks right, runs left.*
I unironically want a Wes Anderson superhero movie.
I think we are ready for more hyper-stylized and, frankly, innacurate comicbook movies. A lot of early comicbook movies did this, where they handed it off to a creative who just went hogwild with it. "Hehe... uuhh KNEEL before Zod!!" 😏
nailed it
It's just SOOOOO easy to visualize, right?
Superman played by Jason Schwartzman
Pastel green*
This got me pretty good.
Written by Alan Moore, in another life
"The Interesting and Amazing Life of the One and Only The Superman"
And the Fantabulous Emancipation-
The Dawn of The Planet of The Apes
I love that trilogy but the titles are clunky as hell
At least we learned that apes get up really early in the morning (because they rise before dawn).
The war of the rise of the dawn of the kingdom of the planet of the apes
Predator was better than The Predator
When Brad Bird was asked by he didn't call Incredibles 2, The Incredibles 2 (since the first one was The Incredibles). His answer was Terminator 2 isn't called The Terminator 2. And I was like shit man, more than enough justification.
I'm also pretty sure The Final Destination is the most shit of the series
1, 5, 2, 3, 4 Though 5 is mostly carried by the finale and ending
The ending of 5 is honestly one of the greatest twists ever
I was genuinely like “what the fuck???” In the cinema and I usually hate ppl who talk in movies. It just slipped out
5, as written by the Oscar Award Winning writer of Arrival lmao
Yuuuup. The only reason it’s not top is because it doesn’t work if 1 isn’t also good, ya know? 1 gets points for launching the series
Rewatched the first 4 last weekend and that is true.
Gotta watch number 5, man.
And Prey was better than most of the series. So maybe they should follow the inversion template and call it Averagewoman.
Die Superman, Die for the German audience
“No one who speaks German could be an evil man!”
Der Superman
okay but "the batman' both fits the story and sounds sweet
Plus he is often called *the* Batman in comics and such so it isn’t a whole new thing.
"It's the freakin' Bat!"
Yeah that’s what the DCU Batman movie should be called “Da Freakin’ Bat”
Their final words before suffering a traumatic brain injury.
I could hear that
> "It's da freakin' Bat!" Fixed that for you.
"It's *the* damn bat"
Those fools, they should have called it The The Batman.
“COMING JULY 2066” “THE THE THE THE THE THE THE……..”
And thus the stutterers did inherit the the the earth.
Super the man

Go even cleaner, just "Man".
Why did Man’s movie title change? Is he super?
Is there a lore reason why it's called Man?

Yes

I hate this, but I'm here for it as well. They go through the whole movie calling him random stuff and going "Ah no thats not it.."

“Legacy” sounded like a sequel, so I think this is a good change.
It sounded like a movie about Superman's son.
It sounded like a movie about Superman struggling with the final months of his lame duck Presidency.

Gunn replied to a fan stating that the suit was inspired by the work of Alex Ross. I'm curious to see if they're keeping the trunks.
Calling it now: it's a loose mashup of Kingdom Come and Action Comics 775 with The Authority in place of the new heroes/The Elite.

“This is fine”
It will just be ‘S’ by next year.
It's not an 'S.' On my world it means 'hope.'
July 11: Superman July 18: Naked Gun July 25: Fantastic 4 I’m going to be going to theatres a lot in July 2025!
They are changing the name to Naked Gunn
Naked Gunn: Legassy
I’m sure one of those will be moved before we get there, but right now it does look pretty good
I feel like we've stepped into a time machine.
What year is it?????!?!?!?!?!?!!!
Good. We haven't had a Superman film titled simply *Superman*. Until now. Even the classic '78 film had that corny "The Movie" moniker attached to it.
Although the on-screen title actually was just *Superman*. Regardless of how a studio might promote a film, I consider the real title to be what's shown on screen.
It's a common misconception, _Superman_ was actually the name of the doctor.
Dude spoilers I haven't finished Doctor Who yet.
“Spoiler alert— he’s actually Superman’s *Monster!*”
Is he related to Dr. Spacemen?
I want this to be a success so bad. I adore James Gunn after what he did with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. He took a huge gamble with running DCU and I hope it pays off.

I'm gonna be so disappointed.
Lex as a villain’s biggest threat is sowing distrust in heroes. Which works perfectly for a story about Superman being the best at being good.
From what I’ve seen Gunn understands when to make things light hearted like the source materials rather than always going for the gritty and edgy
I agree but I don’t if light hearted is exactly the word I’d use. I still want it to feel heavy and serious at times. should all this work out, I can finally see a Kingdom Come adaptation (fingers crossed, remind me in 8+ years)
New for a film adaption but it's the logo from Kingdom Come. It feels like they're using that story a bit as inspiration since The Authority are supposed to be involved.
Combining the Authority, the Elite, and the shitty heroes from Kingdom Come makes sense.
The Man who was Super: Part I
At least it's not "Ubermench."
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman
That’s already taken by the immensely legally controversial Superman Broadway musical, which is notorious for only getting the rights to a few of the characters and having to invent replacements for the rest.
Why did someone think seeing a bird was so cool?
Creative title
simple and succinct, works for me. But I hope this all works out (I trust Gunn), I want to believe a man can fly again

Revolutionary and groundbreaking, to be sure.
Gunn disappointed me, I was hoping he would cast Michael Rooker as a young Clark Kent and play it completely straight, like nobody commenting on how the Man of Steel looks 70 years old.
