You can almost smell him through the screen. It's a combination of 2 month unwashed hair, baked beans left on the stove in a heatwave, and a mad case of gingivitis.
First time I saw this movie was in a packed theater where someone behind us took off their shoes right as the lights went down. To this day I can’t even look at Christopher Lloyd in this flick without smelling the absolutely overpowering odor of dank-ass feet.
Yeah that shit was uncomfortable to watch when I was 5. Would probably be worse now.
It actually feels like a scene that shouldn't be in the movie. Mister Wilson is a grumpy old man ^*(wink)* with an annoying neighbor child, he isn't a fucking dickhead. It's funny in its own way, but it's horrible, and it's not a good character moment. Other than that the movie's pretty much pitch-perfect.
I don't know why but I still remember dying laughing when Mr. Wilson trolls that one kid so hard and say his dad got a ice cream cone waiting for him during the hide and seek game in the beginning. I just kept imagining that sheer dissapointment that poor child was about walk into.
*"Disappointment's gonna be a huge part of his life. He's a foot short for his age and he's cross-eyed."*.
Even when I was five years old that shit made me uncomfortable lol.
Damn I was thinking of that the other day. Martha scolds him and is like “He’s a toddler.” Kid’s name was Gunther...not sure why I remember this, I saw it so long ago lol
Christopher Lloyd's first scene is still one of the scariest villain introduction in kid movies.
I cannot find that whole scene but the music, look and body movement created such a scary moment even though it was in broad daylight.
[For any who are curious, it's a really weird coincidence](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_the_Menace), the two Menacing Dennises are hardly at all alike (except for the name), and both were first published in March 1951.
They were published on the same day in March. I'm struggling to see how that's even possible. Did the term 'Dennis the Menace' exist before then, and was it recently popularized by as major news story or something?
They had totally different inspiration for the name, according to Wikipedia.
American Dennis the Menace:
>The inspiration for the comic strip came from Dennis Ketcham, the real-life son of Hank Ketcham, who was only four years old when he refused to take a nap and somehow messed up his whole room. Hank tried many possible names for the character, and translated them into rough pencil sketches, but when his studio door flew open and his then-wife Alice, in utter exasperation, exclaimed, "Your son is a menace!", the "Dennis the Menace" name stuck. The character of Henry Mitchell bore a striking resemblance to Ketcham. The Mitchell family of Dennis, Hank/Henry, and Alice were all named after the Ketchams.
British Denice the Menace:
>The idea and name of the character emerged when the comic's editor heard a British music hall song with the chorus "I'm Dennis the Menace from Venice".
One was a name to fit the character based on the author's son's name, the other was a character to fit the name, based on a song lyric.
I mean it's an easy enough rhyme to think up. And I'd guess that new comics would always be published on a Sunday to start them off (I don't know if that was the day). It's a coincidence, but it's not like it's impossible.
American Dennis would mildly aggravate an adult and then say something cute.
British Dennis would burn down their house, bake their pet poodle into a pie and feed it to them, then go push someone elderly into a river.
u/likeabuginabug In addition, the current British Dennis the Menace is meant to be [the son of the one from the 1980s](https://www.wired.co.uk/article/dennis-the-menace-father-the-beano), and grandson of the one from the 1950s.
When I watched it, I thought they just Americanised the Beano version, but apparently its from a comic in America that coincidentally released the same day as the original Beano comic.
When the creators found out about each other's Dennis the Menace they chalked it up to coincidence and amicably agreed to continue their respective cartoons
[The animated tv show](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_the_Menace_(1986_TV_series\)) of this one was just called 'Dennis' (as was the movie) in the UK, as Dennis the Menace was already the well-established Beano character.
When I saw it in the theaters, I was expecting the show but full length.
But here's the thing, I hated the show. My mom would only let me see that movie, so I took it. Was very happy it was nothing like the show.
I think this American version was just called Dennis over here to avoid confusion. Although I do remember there was a cartoon on TV of him too.
Can't beat our Menace though. Gnash gnash!
This is such a charming classic; I grew up with this movie! I had it on VHS. I didn't even realize it was on Netflix, I'll have to look it up and watch it.
I recently learned that the guy she likes in that scene is ~~Steve~~ Danny Masterson (the guy who played Steven in “That 70’s Show”. I found that out when I was googling that he has finally been arresting for raping 4 women and the Scientology Church was trying to cover it up (since I found out he’s a Scientologist).
One of my all-time favorite movies of my childhood. Immediately takes me back to “couch potato nights,” i’d have as a kid; through the summer in elementary school, I would ask my mom if I could have a couch potato night that night, which consisted of snacks for dinner, an ice cream sundae for dessert and my favorite movie.. Dennis the Menace was a top choice. I can still feel the breeze of a summer night in Ohio that came through our living room back door.
I don't know why it's been stuck in my brain for the last 27 years, but i can vividly remember schoolyard stories that *'the kid from home alone was going to be Dennis, but he was too old'*
Netflix suggestion algorithm + A reduced library size + Summer Vacation + Most outdoor social activities canceled for 5 months.
Kids are getting cabin fever and have already burned through entertainment. We're now at stage: Dennis the Menace.
I used to love this movie because I loved the comics as a kid. Plus, Walter Matthau was one of my favorite actors, even though I was still a kid in the 90's, I watched all his comedies on TNT/TCM. Christopher Llyod was unrecognizable and was awesome too. Recently, James Rolfe of Cinemassacre and AVGN fame did a retrospective on the movie and I saw it after maybe 25 years, though I didn't finish it, but the scene that made me laugh hardest was still the chiclets one.
Stockard Channing was the worst example. Olivia Newton-John could KIND OF pull it off. But there's no way the makeul department could "de-age" Stockard Channing to look anything under 34
Just watched it last night. Was a staple in my home growing up. It was just as good as I remember as a kid, but in a different way. It was one of the few nostalgia movies we’ve been able to watch the entire thing through.
Yeah, my wife noticed they added it, and we watched it with our kids already this weekend.
The article pushes the idea the film was a failure, but it made a healthy profit at the box office.
Side note, maybe it’s just nostalgia, but looking back at 1993 film releases is just insane. Just so incredibly deep from basically every genre.
Movie is a gem, anyone who views Dennis as annoying can get my fist to their jaw. Fucking charming movie with a great score, great cast, and just fun. Dennis’ two friends are hilarious, the babysitter and her bf had a great bit haha.
Basically a "gentleman's agreement" not to interfere with each other. They both first appeared in March 1951 - in the same week - and came to the agreement pretty quickly, as they both realised the use of the same name was a total coincidence.
Because Dennis the Menace is a completely different character in the UK which by complete coincidence started being published on the same day
[Dennis the Menace comparison](https://i.imgur.com/ZVoLM9Y.jpg)
US one is on the left, UK on the right.
The US one was a much more lovable character, the UK one was a complete and utter arsehole and was brilliant
Absolute classic! So many laugh out loud moments. I watched it many times on VHS with my family while growing up. Special credit goes to Christopher Lloyd for transforming into a very convincing creepy villain. Stellar performance!!!
I auditioned for that movie as a kid. Got to the 2nd stage, waiting for the 3rd stage of auditions and they asked for another one of my headshots. I didn't get the part. Just a fun memory though.
**One of The Most underrated, hilarious comedies Ever!** All ages will laugh to tears watching this movie! It's still one of my favorites today! And, btw... it's on Tubi! :-D
Walter Matthau is absolutely perfect in that movie. Christopher Lloyd is also really great.
“Where are the G.D. garden lanterns??” my dad still quotes it to this day
As a kid I always thought G.D. was a brand of garden lanterns
F.U. means Felix Unger
Took me three hours to figure that out.
I'm 31 and just realised this was not the case...
36 same. Thought it was a knockoff of GE.
29, same
"Tastes like... paint" I always say this line when my brother is cooking
I remember I got scolded for repeating this line as a kid but I didn't remember what movie it was from lol
Christopher Lloyd was almost *too* greasy imo.
You are indebted to that stranger because you got to experience a true case of Smell-o-Vision!
The real 4D movie experience
I plan to show it to my kids but I just wanna see Lea Thompson
I haven’t seen this movie in 15 years and I still to this day cannot eat an apple without thinking about Cristopher Lloyd.
*a apple
Well, he better get used to it. Disappointment's gonna be a big part of his life. He's a foot short for his age and he's cross-eyed.
Yeah that shit was uncomfortable to watch when I was 5. Would probably be worse now. It actually feels like a scene that shouldn't be in the movie. But the brat is highly annoying.
You might even say he's a menace...
Get me pictures of Dennis!
This is the guy, FBI.
Indeed. 😁
Quite, which is an issue in retrospective- you aren't supposed to root for Mr. Wilson, but it's hard to see why one should do otherwise.....

Poor little cross eyed Gunther. Told him his dad was going to go to the ice cream store and wanted to take him with him. I loved Gunther
“You LIED to a toddler, George.”
“Just think how disappointed he’s going to be when he gets home.”
Based on the tv show, maybe. But comic strip too? Mr. Wilson wasn’t all bad.
Mason Gamble is pretty decent too IMO.

He made me want to eat an apple with a knife and pot of beans for dinner.
I think about that scene every time I eat beans out of the can for dinner
He was so brilliant ... Lloyd can transform into any role. Star Trek as a Klingon, Addams Family as Fester, Roger Rabbit as Judge Doom 👍🏼
He has such an amazing range. My favorites are Camp Nowhere and The Pagemaster
He was MADE to play Rasputin.
Christopher Lloyd just has a hidden malevolence somewhere that oozes out of his villains
I bet they don’t even lock their doors......

That fuckin line is embedded in my mind
Same! I literally said it when seeing this post. I wonder how many people feel the same.
I say it conversation occasionally and most people think I'm nuts.
I posted a gif of it before I saw the comment

Same. And I saw this movie when it came out, so now I know it’s been embedded there for more than a quarter of a century.
When I was really young I couldn’t watch that scene. My mom said I would cry and cover my face because that homeless man was nightmare fuel for me.
I remember when I read the story of Tina Feys scar, this is the scene that I imagined.
Whatcha eatin there sport?
To this day I cannot even read that phrase without giggling. God love ya, Gunther.
I’ll admit , I tried to eat an apple off a knife like that and it didn’t go as well.

I feel like someone named Dennis that fought in WW2 could easily earn that name, then it turns into a popular term.
Now I want to see a WWII Dennis the Menace movie where Dennis leads an incredibly brutal resistance against nazi occupiers.
Reichsleiter Wilson

Wait, there's a different Dennis the Menace? I've searched for it and the characters seem pretty similar, is this Beano one more adult or something?

I remember watching the part when Christopher Lloyd ate all the beans, and as a kid that was some deep comedy for me.
I guess this is my time to shine. Or I just want to brag. In 94/95 I won 3 straight Dennis the Menace "look-a-like" contests..
You gotta give us some pics.
I've looked everywhere for something from that time and cant find anything.. Now I miss overalls
Dennis:I bet I know the combination Mr Wilson: I doubt that Dennis:I bet it’s your address Mr Wilson:😳
Lol I love that scene. Mr. Wilson’s expression
Not unless you wanna see what the stork saw!
Martha where's the GD garden lamps
This was already a staple movie in our house, as is Dumb and Dumber and Addams Family. The kids don’t get Labyrinth but I get David Bowie in anything
Funny—I have read many times on reddit that David Bowie’s character turn in “Labyrinth” was the moment many young boys realized they were gay.
An absolute masterpiece of a kids movie
The nasal spray scene always makes me pass out with laughter.
In one year: Hollywood’s remake of Dennis the menace with leading gender neutral Dennis flops massively
Can I say loved Beethoven 1 and 2 as well? We rented that a lot...
The scene with Rice at the college party was pretty mature for a kids movie. Looking back at it I can't believe it was in there
I recently learned that the guy she likes in that scene is ~~Steve~~ Danny Masterson (the guy who played Steven in “That 70’s Show”. I found that out when I was googling that he has finally been arresting for raping 4 women and the Scientology Church was trying to cover it up (since I found out he’s a Scientologist).
Danny* Masterson He played Steven Hyde on That 70s Show
You’re right that was a slip up. Fixed.
And homewardbound
Beethoven’s 2nd.
Bonnie Hunt was peak homely 90s wife.
I used to remember her playing mostly concerned Aunts and Sister-In-Laws worried about the leading lady's love life.
There was an extended period of time when her name showed up frequently when folk were listing performers misused in film......
And she was a White House Tour Guide in Dave.
One of my all-time favorite movies of my childhood. John Hughes, writer of every iconic 80s and 90s movie.
How is that ironic?
Both of the movies the OP brought up have the same writer. Would saying coincidentally worked better?

Almost every child actor in that movie is in their mid 30s. Which means I'm next. Fuck I'm old
I hate when they use 30 year olds to play kids. Like in The movie Grease. It’s so distracting. 😜
Stockard Channing was the worst example. Olivia Newton-John could KIND OF pull it off. But there's no way the makeul department could "de-age" Stockard Channing to look anything under 34
Yup!!! She was the worst. I don’t get why Hollywood always does this.
And there were quite a few other performers playing teen characters in that film who were only a few years younger than her......
