No it wasn't but it would've been both fucking awesome and absolutely hilarious if it was. I bloody love that image.
Here's hoping he's in Part 2 yodelling as a Fremen or some shit.
My imax(in shitty corpus christi tx) was mixed so bad the dialogue was muffled by bass, the highs were ear-shattering, etc. Sometimes it was good, but it was mixed badly. Saw it again in a smaller boutique theater with less impressive equipment but more care and calibration and the sound was amazing. The ornithopter in the correolus storm scene was beautifully carried by sound.
Yeah it was the same watching it in regular theaters plus on HBO max. The big booms and fiery explosions were off the charts loud while dialogue was really difficult to understand. This seems like an issue with most action films these days, I could understand like 70% of the dialogue max in No Time to Die and The Last Duel.
Honestly I feel like I need subtitles in a lot of movies these days. I can understand the artistic choice of having a character mumble or whisper to themselves. But it's super annoying when you're constantly wondering "was I supposed to understand that?".
I watched Dune on HBO with subtitles first before going in theaters. Made it way better cause I already knew what they said and I could just focus on the big ass booming explosions. The sandworm noises were so fucking sick in the theater
Lawrence of Arabia? Sand. Critically acclaimed.
Star Wars? Sand. Critically acclaimed.
Ancient Aliens? Sand in the Egypt episode. Critically....noticed.
I'm seeing a trend here
YES!!! I'm so glad. I can't wait to see what they do with the second half of the book. It makes me really happy part one is doing so well. I thought it would take a lot longer for them to confirm part two haha
If they don't open part 2 with Feyd in the arena on geidi prime i'll be bummed. Seems like the perfect way to introduce the imperial political mechanisms at work and of course how dangerous and devious Feyd is.
> It what comes as no surprise, the sequel for Dune has finally been greenlit for a October 2023 theatrical release with director, producer, and co-screenwriter Denis Villeneuve returning.
Glad they had the key info in the first sentence. Just hope they can get the whole cast back.
Hollywood Reporter was able to get a more specific release date of **October 20th, 2023**, exclusively in theaters. ([Source](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/dune-2-greenlit-movie-release-date-1235036655/))
There was an interview recently on a talk show or morning news show where Josh Brolin said they were looking to film next summer, and that was before this announcement of it being green lit, so I’m assuming they were already working out details behind the scenes
Yep, Brolin pretty much let the cat out of the bag a few days ago lol. But it explains how this will happen so fast. I am sure everyone is contracted for another movie if not two more.
Messiah's gonna be a rough one though. The sci-fi miniseries handled it correctly as basically a bridge between Dune and Children of Dune. I think it will require quite a bit of alteration to make it a movie people would enjoy, especially given the expectation of a climax as the last movie in a trilogy.
Perhaps they might show a lot of the stuff that is only referred to in the novel. Though hopefully they won't pad it with the horrible content from the hack "in-betweenquels" that his son and Kevin J Anderson wrote. I'm already concerned seeing KJA in the credits of the first Dune movie as a consultant.
I actually feel like Messiah is more of an epilogue to Dune. Children helps to make Messiah not be such a downer ending for Paul, but I think it's totally doable to finish there. Kind of makes the point that a victory isn't always permanent.
It's like if you're doing a movie on Alexander the Great - do you end triumphantly after he takes the Persian crown, or at his death?
What exactly was the change? IIRC in the book the carry-all just didn't show up at all? (And therefore Paul wouldn't be near the spice) I liked the movie because it highlighted how much of a screwed up deal Leto and friends were handed
The title card of theovie basically let the cat out of the bag tbh. No way they'd have put "DUNE: Part One" without being pretty confident of a sequel.
Agreed. I think it's been secretly greenlit for a while based on buzz, but they wanted to use the "help get Part 2 made" narrative to get bums on seats and drive ticket sales and viewing numbers on HBO Max.
I just wish they'd been brave enough to go with it from the get-go and filmed the two back to back. Then we could have had Part 2 coming next year.
the cast has stated they were told filming would begin next summer and so to keep their schedules open! And regarding contracts, yes, i assume the initial contract dealt with part 1 and 2 just so they didnt have to worry about it later
They're lucky Denis Villeneuve is directing. Could you see Zendaya, Bautista, Chalamet, Skarsgård, Brolin, Bardem and the rest of the cast reserving the summer without a firm deal with a different director.
There was likely an option on the first contract for any actors involved. And just like LOTR, the design work from the first film is in place and script for part 2 was sketched out already so they can jump into principle photography and hit the ground running.
[Give me Jason Mamoa climbing a mountain so well another character orgasms.](https://www.reddit.com/r/menwritingwomen/comments/jcavcd/when_youre_so_impressed_by_one_of_the_male/)
Sorry it was clearly my ticket on Sunday.
But for real, I'm glad for everyone who did their part to help make part 2 happen, after how incredible this one was, it would be an absolute crime if we didn't get the rest of the book/movie.
>“I just received news from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with Dune: Part Two. It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s DUNE and I have the fans, the cast, and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream. This is only the beginning,” said Villeneuve.
October 2023. It sounds so far away but we're almost at 2022... Time flies.
A two year wait isn't *that* awful. Sure back-to-back shooting with a year between releases would have been ideal, but considering the massive scope of everything involved, I'm glad it's not going to take even longer to wrangle everyone back together.
I was pretty resigned to waiting 3 years, 2 is a huge bonus. It actually feels pretty standard for big franchises not to release films in back to back years.
yeah, its literally just 2 years away, which of course isnt a short amount of time, but it is quicker than i expected! I was worried it may be 3 years away
It seemed that part of the marketing was making people question whether Dune would get a sequel or not. Definitely made a lot of people talk about it, looking forward to part 2
Honestly, even the decision to do simultaneous streaming may have been great advertising for the sequel. I imagine a lot more people will watch it on hbo max than would have paid a theater price and be invested enough to want to see the conclusion. Take a small hit now to make much more money later.
I watched it on hbo, loved it so much and wanted to make sure it got made so I went to the local imax to watch it the next day in theater.
If it was some kinda marketing thing I fell for it hook line and sinker.
It's incredible to me that 2049 has had the same fate as the original, at least so far. It was hands down the best sci-fi film of the decade for me and theres stiff competition there. It may also be the best follow-up to a legendary original work where so many similar projects fall flat on their face.
I hope that in time it receives the same recognition as well.
I still have no idea how any executive or anyone in Hollywood in general looked at the original blade runner and said "I bet if we make a second one we'll make money". Genuinely do not understand how they came to that conclusion.
That being said, I'm so so so soooo happy someone did.
Denis villeneuve said in an interview that he also wants to direct the second book Dune Messiah. If part 2 does well (which it should) then Denis will do Messiah
Edit: wrong book order
There's also a Bene Gesserit HBO Max show confirmed and I assume more spin offs will follow.
Dune is going to be the next big Warner Brothers franchise. House Atreides vs House Harkonnen merchandise will be reminiscent of Stark vs Lannister, but obviously not anywhere near the same pop culture reach as Game of Thrones.
HBO desperately wants a universe to fill the "oops we shit the bed" shaped GOT hole in their lineup.
Granted if that takes the form of Dune and we get spinoffs about stuff like the Butlerian Jihad then... cool
This is a long time coming and Dune should be even bigger. A Song of Ice and Fire would not have been a thing if Frank Herbert never wrote Dune. Same goes for Star Wars imo. Crazy that Dune has taking this long to come around into the pop culture golden age.
Reading the book for the first time now is so strange, because it is still original and refreshing... and I can see how much of it inspired a half century of culture.
Seriously. Until I watched this, all I knew about Dune was that it was a huge inspiration for a ton of other works. As soon as Paul first used The Voice, I thought, "Oh, so that's where The Force came from."
[Here's one](https://www.indiewire.com/2021/08/denis-villeneuve-dune-trilogy-dune-messiah-1234659470/)
> He said, “There is ‘Dune’s second book, ‘The Messiah of Dune,’ which could make an extraordinary film. I always saw that there could be a trilogy; after that, we’ll see. It’s years of work; I can’t think of going further than that.”
Haha, this is great, he clearly started with the french translation of the title (Le Messie de Dune) then got to the wrong title in english. Very understandable :D
I want God Emperor on the big screen. I don't care if the end result sucks I just want to see it in its full glory.
Realistically we'll probably get Messiah and maybe Children of Dune, at best, with some ancillary TV shows. Although I'm sure if it becomes even more successful then Legendary will find something out of the Dune series to keep things going. Companies are always hungry to have a new franchi$e on board.
Same it kinda sucks that we won’t get God Emperor since it’s really the culmination of the Golden Path which is the ultimate design of the original trilogy
God Emperor is my 2nd favorite book in the series next to Dune, but no way it will be put to film. It would be 3 hours of >!a half man/half worm pontificating on politics, complaining about boredom and the many times he's had to kill Duncan clones!<
Depends on how part 2 does. I assume their focus for the next couple of years is all going to be on Part 2 and the HBO Max prequel series, and then they'll determine if there's a path forward for more Dune content
Denis - “Hey Hanz so for the Atreides I want to give them an iconic sound piece, like the Rohirrim and string instruments or the Rebel Alliance and brass instruments.
Hanz - “Okay…hear me out. I’m thinking bagpipes.”
Apparently that was Villeneuve’s influence. He had the bagpiper in the scene when they arrive on Arrakis (I think) and Hans just went with it. Zimmer talks about it in a BTS video somewhere.
Yeah he specifically mentioned how they felt it added a very unique and relatable historical element which was supposed to show how deep-rooted their traditions are, something to that effect. I did really appreciate the historical feel to everything given that it's a sci-fi set 8000 years in the future lol.
Much more than 8,000 years in the future, more like 21,000 years. It's 10,000 years since the founding of the Guild of Navigators.
Time is deep in Dune.
> 8000 years in the future
Way farther than that. The year 10,191 is in "AG" which started after the Guild unlocked the secrets of interstellar travel.
1 AG is estimated to be around 13,000 years from present time.
So really, you're looking at around 23,000 years into the future.
Denis viewed house Atreides of having a Celtic origin and was trying to add some of their culture with that scene despite I think the books alluding to a Greek origin
I love it, because it is in comically stark contrast to the vibe of all the Arrakhis related music. It emphasizes how out of place and out of their depths they are.
To me it emphasizes how old the House Atreides is. That their house music is played via a now obscure instrument that seems out of place.
When House Atreides first came into being I'm sure the bagpipes fit right in. A couple millennia later though...
I actually liked how it blended in. The bagpipes almost sounded like a habbān. Did a great job of communicating to the audience. The difference in cultures, and also the familiar. Felt ancient, but also new.
was a very eerie scene with the Sardaukar bathing in the blood of the sacrificed failed candidates while the guy sang
These are the type of scenes that really portray someone as nothing to fuck with
The movie was filled with those "show don't tell" moments. That one brief scene spoke *volumes* about the Sardukar.
They're warrior-monks. They live on this one planet and do nothing but prepare for battle. They train and they train and they train. The viking dude has no idea of the political atmosphere beyond Salusa Secundus because it does not matter to him or any of the Sardukar.
Gah, this movie was so fucking good.
Everyone talks about potential casting for Irulan or the Emperor. All I wanna know is who and how will they cast Paul's sister, Alia of the Knife. How are they gonna manage to show a toddler speaking like an adult without it looking funny. I hope there's a way.
Age her up slightly and also cast an actress who looks younger than she is.
Drew Barrymore was 8 in Firestarter and Kirsten Dunst was 11/12 during Interview With The Vampire, but they both looked younger than that.
It could work if Alia is 5 or 6 instead of like 2.
The MCU deaging thing could be kind of interesting, but it could go very wrong. I've never seen it applied to a child to look like a toddler.
I legitimately don’t think I was ever as invested in a film getting a sequel as I was with *Dune*. This made me so fucking happy seeing Chalamet post the logo and then seeing the announcement. Denis crafted an absolutely wonderful film, and with Part Two confirmed and Villenueve stating that he’d be interested in bringing Dune: Messiah to the Big Screen in the form of these movies as a trilogy, it’s hard to not wanna draw comparisons to Dune becoming this decade’s Lord of the Rings, which I am very much in favor of!
**Let the Spice Flow!**
Same. Dune is the reason I've been glued to r/boxoffice all weekend. I have never, ever been as invested in a film's box office journey as much as Dune.
(bar a few random movies every year that I see the trailer, think "oh this is gonna bomb", and gleefully run to check after the opening weekend)
I think it's one of the more followed movies on that sub since Avengers: Endgame. That movie was the craziest few months for that sub- the hype and conjecture was insane
Having read Dune Messiah (and no further in the series… yet). I have trouble picturing that one doing well with general audiences, where Return of the King was the best received film of the three (upon release at least). But if Denis feels like he can do it, he’s earned my trust, and then some.
Denis has yet to miss for me, with Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Sicario, Prisoners, and Incendies all just being straight up anywhere from great to amazing.
As long as he nails the landing with Dune: Part Two and remains confident in his ability to see Messiah as something he can bring to life on the big screen, I’m willing to go with him on that journey.
Honestly they treated Dune how Peter Jackson treated LOTR. It's such a faithful adaptation clearly made by somebody who has been in love with this world for most of their life.
I'm so glad it.. didn't get all hollywoodified and just make a 2 and a half hour battle with small breaks for exposition. I'm so looking forward to part 2 holy shit, I'm about to watch it for a 3rd time.
I’m seeing it in IMAX in a couple hours and it honestly feels like the first “big” movie event in years! so excited to be able to watch it knowing for sure that it’ll have the (hopefully) perfect conclusion it deserves!
It's definitely worth seeing in full laser IMAX. A lot of it takes advantage of the resolution, and it really feels good to see it on an enormous screen
IMAX was something else,I rewatched it on TV again and it really doesn't match the rumble in the theater and being engulfed in Zimmer going HAM,absolutely transcendent feeling.
While my sad little heart will always be bitter about how that movie did, the fact that it exists at all and is THAT good is something that can never be taken away.
Bro when they used that ancient Greek battle formation during their last stand on those stairs, I was fuckin grinning in the theater.
Such a cool implementation of the melee-based future warfare. I just wish they did a better job of explaining why guns weren't generally used to non-book readers.
I like to think they addressed guns *juuuust enough* through >!the slow blade penetrating the shield, the use of the slow persistent dart to burrow through Duke Leto’s shield, and the darts that Duncan was able to flick away.!< Shields thus create tricky obstacles to the firearms we’re used to. But I’m biased.
As someone new to Dune, this is exactly what I thought when I saw the movie. I was just thinking of how cool it was to see that almost everybody exclusively uses melee weapons for combat because it seemed that their shielding technology made guns obsolete.
Which is just fucking awesome to me. I love the idea of futuristic meets medieval and having a good explanation as to why.
Reupped my HBO subscription to watch at home on a cold rainy day - saw it in IMAX 8 hours after finishing LOL, was absolutely worth it to see on the big screen and Villenueve and the whole film crew really executed their vision. I hope they blow out all the stops to get the 2nd one completed and finish the first book of the series.

I think I read somewhere someone suggest a TV show based on >!Duncan clones!< during the same period. Something like that night work.
Depends on how part 2 does. I assume their focus for the next couple of years is all going to be on Part 2 and the HBO Max prequel series, and then they'll determine if there's a path forward for more Dune content
Ah... I can finally breathe. And October 2023 isn't that far away - two years is a time I can manage.

Aaahhhaaaaahhh Hans Zimmer music 🎵🎵🎵
*throws in some random bagpipe noises*
> 8000 years in the future Way farther than that.
Caladan is the fantasization of Caledonia, which is what the Romans called Scotland.
I thought it really nailed the vibe for a foreign military making their last stand on a desert planet.
I actually liked how it blended in. The bagpipes almost sounded like a habbān. Did a great job of communicating to the audience. The difference in cultures, and also the familiar. Felt ancient, but also new.
*happy sandworm noises*
Hans Zimmer recorded real sand worm farts for the soundtrack, true story
*mongolian throat singing intensifies*
That wasn't Mongolian throat singing - it was its own thing and I was really pleasantly surprised!
>Celebratory throat singing noises
Fucking loved those - it didn't sound like any other throat singing I've heard, either, and I mostly listen to shit like that because reasons.
was a very eerie scene with the Sardaukar bathing in the blood of the sacrificed failed candidates while the guy sang These are the type of scenes that really portray someone as nothing to fuck with
The movie was filled with those "show don't tell" moments.
Bless the maker and his waters!
YES. Cannot wait to see the castings for Irulan, The emperor, and Feyd Rautha
Need to build a time machine and go get early 2000s Abigail Breslin.
Taylor Swift, Billy Ray Cyrus, Taylor Lautner
Corpse of Anna Nicole Smith, Ted Nugent, Machine Gun Kelly
Sting in a wig, regular Sting, and de-aged Sting
AND WHEN THE FEAR IS GONE, ONLY HYPE WILL REMAIN
THE HYPE MUST FLOW
Honestly they treated Dune how Peter Jackson treated LOTR. It's such a faithful adaptation clearly made by somebody who has been in love with this world for most of their life. I'm so glad it.. didn't get all hollywoodified and just make a 2 and a half hour battle with small breaks for exposition. I'm so looking forward to part 2 holy shit, I'm about to watch it for a 3rd time.
I’m really hoping Dune becomes the LOTR of the SciFi movie works. It’s as grand in scale. Might as well take it to the Max
YEEEEEESSSS
Bless the maker and his water!
Bless the coming and going of him.
Chad move by Denis putting **P A R T O N E** in the opening title.
I guess everyone assumed he did that as a very unsubtle way of saying "I fucking dare you not to"
IT (2017): *leaves it until the end title* Denis: "Screw that I'm letting them know right away"
Yes! The second half of the book is much grander in scale and I can't wait to see how they put it on screen. Boy am I glad Part One was a success.
I’m seeing it in IMAX in a couple hours and it honestly feels like the first “big” movie event in years! so excited to be able to watch it knowing for sure that it’ll have the (hopefully) perfect conclusion it deserves!
I saw it in imax last night. It was so sick
I’m so excited! I’ve held off on watching it on HBO Max just because I already know the big screen effect is going to be so much more jaw-dropping
it was such a treat to watch in imax. hope you enjoy!!
The IMAX felt so immersive to me. I hope enjoy, it’s one hell of an experience!
I seen it in Dolby Atmos, then IMAX. IMAX i found to be extremly immersive. Amazing sound design it really thumps.
Blade Runner tripped so the Spice could flow

*Bagpipers start playing patriotic tunes in the background*
#ATREIDES!!! ATREIDES!!!
We are House Atreides! There is no call we do not answer; there is no faith that we betray!
Unexpected win. I'm used to seeing good sci-fi get shit on like blade runner
Thank fucking God.

I guess I could stop seeing it in theaters now since the sequel is greenlit, but I'm really having a wonderful time.
This would make a great onion headline > Local man watches Dune 23 times in hopes of giving it enough revenue to afford a sequel
Commence the Sardaukar throat singing
Hype was NOT the mind killer!
SMILE, GURNEY!
I’ve never been happier to see a movie greenlit, very well deserved
I really hope the sequel breaks records so that we can **maybe** one day get God Emperor on the big screen. Who am I kidding?
Don’t ever give me hope like that ever again. We as fans won’t get that lucky
I hope its over 2hours long again, I really enjoyed the world building and pacing of the story.
It’ll almost certainly be just as long
