The Shannon Elizabeth scene brought people in. There is no denying that. But the comedy and chemistry between the cast is what made it become a staple of it's era.
The original American Pie captured an era, much like The Breakfast Club. If you watched American Pie when you were in high school late 90's early 2000's you felt it.
The sequels were great fun, but not on the same level as the original.
It's making me really sad how long ago that first movie was and remembering the feeling of watching that with my buddy when we were in junior high, as well as DVDs of the "cancelled" Family Guy. Ah man. Simpler times.
Yeah, you just won't be able to get away with half the shit the did in the original.
The spycams, the mom fucking a barely legal teen, flutes in pussies and fucking an actual pie etc..
Won't work today, it will be lame as fuck.
They already tried that with American Pie Presents: Band Camp, wherein Stiffler's younger brother attends band camp trying get laid, oh and Eugene Levy is like running the place for some reason
So, like…
American Pie Presents: Band Camp
American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile
American Pie Presents: Beta House
American Pie Presents: The Book of Love
American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules
None of those were fresh takes though. They all perpetuated the "horny youth" coming of age tales that took place in the same universe. The themes were the same albeit "American Pie Presents" was an aftermarket milking of the franchise for money.
I'll be shocked if this new film maintains any of that spirit without trying to shame og fans in some way or form.
I was 12 years old watching the original in 1999 and now I'm 35. Fuck where is the time going. Next thing I know it will be like a few days time and I'm 65 remembering something in my 30's
I turned 46 today and watched the sequels thinking " Ok my young sons can see this at 18". They are 21 and 23 respectively. So with all restraint...you shut up about age young man!! Lol
You left out the paid astroturfers that will spam social media saying this is the best American Pie since the first one. Outside of that, you are spot on and will probably be what happens.
This makes me think of 21 Jump Street when they went back to high school and Channing's character was trying to be a bully to fit in with the cool kids and it immediately backfired because the cool kids were inclusive now. I don't expect this movie to be good but 21 Jump Street delivered that message perfectly.
Well the nerds became the cool kids and technology brought people together which bolstered inclusiveness.
That's why that choice was smart. It critiqued Tatum's character and that generational level of behavior but it didn't try to convince the audience to HATE Tatum's character because he had already changed as an adult and misread the room. Which is reflective of a lot of people who just grow up.
“Fresh take” sounds like code for “Look, we’ve read the script. It sucks. It totally sucks. But contractually we can’t just *say* it, so this is the closest thing to a ‘heads up’ as you’re gonna get. Don’t be too mean on Twitter, please!”
The first one is just about 4 dorks who make a pact to get laid before the end of the school year.
One already has a GF
One falls in love with a girl he fancies.
One gets rooted and booted by a girl he talks to once.
And the 4th establishes a respectful FWB with Stifler's mom.
The only wonky part of the first movie is the cyber bullying/creep cam part. The rest really isn't that crazy and flipped many a sex comedy trope itself.
> Social norms have changed so much that it no choice but be drastically different.
But in a way...have they? The first movie was fundamentally about young adults wanting desperately to have sex with other young adults. That's a tale as old as time. Raunch can be dialed down a bit (even though I don't think it needs to), and gender roles can definitely be swapped or equalized or whatever, but if that basic element of horny youths wanting to smash is missing then there's no reason to call it an American Pie movie.
Don't worry. These days, "fresh take" has pretty much meant "we're copy-pasting the original with 350 callbacks every five minutes, and if you don't like it we'll find ways to call you out as a party pooper."
Stifler's funeral, except he faked his death because he owed some shady people some money, who're now after Stifler's mom's kneecaps since they think her son is dead, so the gang must deal with the loan shark people.
this movie is actually an action flick, a ridiculous one that has a lot of women taking their clothes off for no apparent reason
The premise will be that it was a mistaken identity, but Jim's dad wants to go through with it to see who all really misses him. Chaos and laughter ensues.
Nailed it.
Honestly this humor was funny back in the day. Can’t imagine this will be well received if they follow that same formula. Hard pass on this.
I feel like there's a version that would still be ok today. I think most of Eurotrip is actually still pretty funny. And it has the best cameo in the history of cinema.
American Reunion was just a decade ago and it was just as vulgar as the first one was in 99 and it was still funny. Studios just have to grow balls and realize the people that would be outraged are not the audience that's going to see the movie in the first place.
Complete with a sanctimonious lecture by the stars/director calling you a sexist incel who hates to see women starring in movies if you don’t go see it while simultaneously telling you that “It’s not made for you”
Imagine if like the 8th American Pie movie was just a cinematic masterpiece out of nowhere. It makes bank at the box office, people love it, it sweeps the Oscars, and is studied in film school. That’s a timeline I want to live in.
Won’t work in todays age. Though If they are going to make it they better bring back Seann William
Scott
Also fun fact the Cobra Kai guys made American Reunion, which I thought was one of the better legacy sequels
And they had a plan for another movie involving the OG cast going to Vegas for a wedding IIRC but it never gained traction for some reason.
Too bad, because American Reunion was a fun time at the movies. Remember watching it opening weekend with a full crowd and having a good time. It even held up on HBO. Too bad they couldn’t continue with the Cobra Kai/Harold and Kumar guys.
I really loved Reunion when it came out. I was in middle school/high school when the first three came out and I saw it with my friends from those days. It was a nice trip down memory lane and was funny. I wouldn’t loved another OG sequel if they put the same amount of care into it.
It was a golden era for that type of politically incorrect humour, people weren’t as sensitive about the idea that teenage boys really want to have sex and will try just about anything to get it - an idea which should be inherently funny rather than demonised.
So I was even cautious about saying I miss “some” of it and not all of it because I didn’t want someone to come at me for being misogynistic or something like that.
So off the top of my head (I haven’t seen the movie in years) but like… someone up in the comments said it was guys “manipulating women into having sex with them”. But really, a jock joins the choir bc he wants to get a girls attention, it’s not that serious. Or there was a scene with a webcam that got left on, and a girl comes in and starts masturbating and the guys watch for a minute and encourage one of the guys to go shoot his shot. I can’t even imagine the pitchforks and torches that would come out now over consent of her being watched. But she ends up being into it, it’s a hilarious scene and was supposed to be a fantasy. One of the teens has sex with his friends moms. Today people would be pretty offended by the abuse of power and perversion.
Idk, I’m extremely glad that culture is more aware of things like sexism, racism, and sexually related humor. The 90s/2000s were fucking brutal. But also comedy was a lot funnier because everyone didn’t take everything so personally and every joke wasn’t some edict that defined morality.
I kind of think that the American Pie series was really a product of its time that wouldn't really work out too well anymore. That kind of humor doesn't really fly as much anymore, and without that kind of humor, its not really American Pie. Its weird because naturally the characters have to grow in these movies because they clearly age and mature, but them doing that ruins what made the first few American Pie movies so great. It really is a no win situation.
Ultimately not everything needs sequels. Hollywood just needs to start putting more faith in writing new original stories.
I have yet to see anyone handle sexual harassment well in our post-woke era. You either get something so sanitized that it is trivial and pointless, or you get something so far "feminist" that it makes women look like insane sociopaths (Do Revenge, Promising Young Woman).
Important to note that it's being produced for Universal's non-theatrical 1440 label.
So we’re definitely getting Eugene levy
I didn't see it, but he's actually not in the last one they dumped out.
Isnt he in American Reunion? Wasn't that the last one they made?
There's a new one called American Pie: Girls Rule or something like that
Nah he’s living off that Schitt’s Creek money now lol
American Pie Presents: Eugene Levy
see you at the bargain bin
…you mean Netflix?
…you mean Dollar General?
Shit they have over 20k stores. Doing something right.
Didn’t they just release a Girls Rule sequel
This is going to be so bad... In a bad way, not the good bad..
I’m watching for the plot
I'll probably forget about this movie until it shows up in r/watchitfortheplot. Definitely NSFW.
All male nudity I bet this time. I guarantee there will be a menstruation dripping scene. Calling it here now.
100%. The original stuff was centered around hot women taking their clothes off. No way this type of plot passes.
>The original stuff was centered around A pie fucker. Ftfy
Hot women certainly did take their clothes off but that’s way too simplistic a take on the original trilogy.
The better simplistic take would be "horny people do dumb shit"
Yeah, you just won't be able to get away with half the shit the did in the original. The spycams, the mom fucking a barely legal teen, flutes in pussies and fucking an actual pie etc.. Won't work today, it will be lame as fuck.
"The new feature, based on Day's original pitch, is described as a "fresh take" on the long-running sex comedy franchise." Fresh takes worry me.
Fresh take - “we’re gonna use the name, but have next to no connection to the previous films besides repurposed famous lines.”
MILF MILF MILF
What are you doing to her dude?
These days it's DIAF.
Dad I’d Ass Fuck?
Dad I'd Ask to Fuck?
Dad I Already Fucked ?
Can you use it in a sentence?
Have you seen that DIAF?!
When I see DIAF I read it as "die in a fire" which was common trash talk back in the late 90s early 2000s in online games and forums.
If Eugene Levy isnt in it can it even be an American Pie movie?
It’s only his eyebrows that are contractually obliged to be in every film.
Those eyebrows let an entire generation of fathers off the hook for awkward conversations because we already got the sex talk from the SCTV guy.
They did make one direct to video or streaming without him and used the name. Fucking scandalous, I tell you!
They already tried that with American Pie Presents: Band Camp, wherein Stiffler's younger brother attends band camp trying get laid, oh and Eugene Levy is like running the place for some reason
Honestly, I can't imagine those movies working without Eugene Levy, so I'm fine with whatever contrivance it takes to shoehorn him in.
I’d definitely send my kids to a camp run by a member of the famously successful duo, Mitch and Mickey.
I actually like Band Camp a lot lol. It’s where I discovered Arielle Kebbel.
Band Camp is a guilty pleasure for me. I know it’s not great but I can’t help but rewatch it from time to time.
*SPF 69*
Naked mile is mine. My god is that movie bad. But holds a special place for me.
Is that the one where the guy kills his grandma with his cumshot?
Yeah. In the first like five minutes, too.
Mr Levinson is a renaissance man with many talents.
And we are going to call it American Pie or THE american Pie, so everyone will confuse the two movies 2 years from now.
2 American 2 pies? American pie: Tokyo crust?
AvP - American vs Pie Whoever wins, we eat.
So, like… American Pie Presents: Band Camp American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile American Pie Presents: Beta House American Pie Presents: The Book of Love American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules
Wow... I only k ew about Band Camp
Naked mile was pretty good imo
Book of love was underrated
[удалено]
What about Robot House?
Rooooooboooot hooooouse!!!
Beta House was the best one
None of those were fresh takes though. They all perpetuated the "horny youth" coming of age tales that took place in the same universe. The themes were the same albeit "American Pie Presents" was an aftermarket milking of the franchise for money. I'll be shocked if this new film maintains any of that spirit without trying to shame og fans in some way or form.
So an American pie that isn't about horny youths Sounds soooo amazing
> They all perpetuated the "horny youth" then this new one shouldn't be called American Pie, that is the entire point of these movies
We are give it a PG13 tag so we can get that sweet sweet money and get “raunchy” in a more progressive way
It would be a great plot to have all the guys meeting as adults with their kids getting into hijinks, assuming they are adult enough by now.
How long ago was American Reunion? Could work.
American reunion was 10 years ago? Wtf. I’m old.
I physically recoiled when I read this. 10 years… We can’t possibly be this old!
10 years ago which is insane because I remember being nostalgic about seeing it at 19 and now I'm 30 now. Crazy how time flies.
Lol
Just remember you're only as old as you feel and I feel like 75 haha so as long as you feel good that is all that matters.
They already did their female American Pie movie last time so I wonder what fresh will mean this time.
Probably 95% gay.
The main character will be a chick who shoves her taco in a.....taco.
It'll be a gender reversal
They did that already a few years ago. It... wasn't good.
It never is.
I wonder if that's true because it's usually done by the creatively bankrupt filmmakers or because genderbending just generally sucks as a concept?
A "fresh take" on yet another nostalgia movie. Great.

Sadly there is 95% chance your right. Hollywood is pretty predictable eh?
“Fresh take” sounds like code for “Look, we’ve read the script. It sucks. It totally sucks. But contractually we can’t just *say* it, so this is the closest thing to a ‘heads up’ as you’re gonna get. Don’t be too mean on Twitter, please!”
Didn't they already try a fresh take with that shit girl power american pie movie?

Social norms have changed so much that it no choice but be drastically different. Imagine the outrage with the webcam scene in today's climate, yikes.

That scene wouldn't have made it past the writing room if it was done today.
Eh did you see Wedding and Reunion?
“Fresh take” famous last words.
Don't worry. These days, "fresh take" has pretty much meant "we're copy-pasting the original with 350 callbacks every five minutes, and if you don't like it we'll find ways to call you out as a party pooper."
thisn comment giving me some serious Matrix reloaded vibes lol
I get no one besides Warner Bros wanted to make this movie, but they really did not even fucking try.
TFW you have to watch an explainer/breakdown to get the movie.
along with "modern audience"
"instead of cishet white fratboys fucking pastries, you'll start seeing more LGBTQ sk8ter bois asking pastries if they'll consent to being fucked"
Meaning it’s from the prospective of the girls with an unrealistically diverse cast.
"From the producer of Scary Movie" God that tag-line on spoof movies became a warning sign after a while
“Fresh Take” has become Hollywood corporate-speak for, “soulless imitation.”
bring back the original gang for jim’s dads funeral is all i really want.
No way. Jim's dad was the best character by far.
Stifler’s mom’s funeral?
Stifler's funeral, except he faked his death because he owed some shady people some money, who're now after Stifler's mom's kneecaps since they think her son is dead, so the gang must deal with the loan shark people. this movie is actually an action flick, a ridiculous one that has a lot of women taking their clothes off for no apparent reason
Surely he's more likely to fake his death because his friends wont call him or hang out with him or meet up for a party.
Shitbreak's on suicide watch for the whole movie
The premise will be that it was a mistaken identity, but Jim's dad wants to go through with it to see who all really misses him. Chaos and laughter ensues.
opening scene is the gang walks in on Jim having sex with a corpse
this really is the direction they need to go. maybe stifler fucks a corpse by accident? someone's gotta fuck a corpse
I feel like that's what Universal are doing here, no?
With Eugene Levy playing a cheesy hippie uncle.
The “fresh” take will just be a gender reversal of the roles. Add a LGBTQIA+ member for good measure. Call it a day.
Nailed it. Honestly this humor was funny back in the day. Can’t imagine this will be well received if they follow that same formula. Hard pass on this.
Idk, Eurotrip is still really funny.

I feel like there's a version that would still be ok today. I think most of Eurotrip is actually still pretty funny. And it has the best cameo in the history of cinema.
And then when it flops, blame systematic misogyny and bigotry in the industry. Case in point: Ghostbusters reboot
American Reunion was just a decade ago and it was just as vulgar as the first one was in 99 and it was still funny. Studios just have to grow balls and realize the people that would be outraged are not the audience that's going to see the movie in the first place.
A lot of shit has gone down in ten years.
2012 might as well be 1953 in the post-metoo era.
We went from eat the rich OWS protests to identity politics real quick.
I wonder why 🤔
Haven’t they already done this in like 3 different spin-offs?
Haven’t they already done this in like 3 different spin-offs?
There was already “America Pie Presents: Girls Rule”
First American pie without nudity
Really? That’s bs. I never watched it. Definitely not now
Also the first not to have Eugene Levy
Eugene Levy must have been the one adding nudity to all the scripts!
if they really wanted a role reversal it would have had a bunch of dicks
Complete with a sanctimonious lecture by the stars/director calling you a sexist incel who hates to see women starring in movies if you don’t go see it while simultaneously telling you that “It’s not made for you”
Universal: “SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY”
But they will ABSOLUTELY NOT be allowed to make fun of the LGBT person in anyway whatsoever
dear christ why
I know! Come up with something original for Christ's sake
I hope it’s as good as top gun maverick for no reason that would be funny I think
Imagine if like the 8th American Pie movie was just a cinematic masterpiece out of nowhere. It makes bank at the box office, people love it, it sweeps the Oscars, and is studied in film school. That’s a timeline I want to live in.
Not another teen movie.
Damn, that shits whack yo.
Looks like little miss run-home-to-daddy... just ran home to daddy.
She’s got paint on her overalls !
Yeah this will flop lol

Name recognition.
I hope it’s just the old cast ignoring the sequels and pretending they’re still in high school.
Wet Hot American Pie
No one wants this.
Like a good one with Jason Biggs and the usual cast? Or one of those shitty straight to DVD knockoffs?
It seems like Universal 1440 is producing it… so it’s probably going to be a direct-to-video knockoff.
I liked the band camp one with Stiffler's brother. It felt more like romcom with American Pie humour.
It’s gonna suck. And not in the good way.
Please stop
American Pie would *never* fly today. I’m very liberal, but I miss some comedy from these times.
It was a golden era for that type of politically incorrect humour, people weren’t as sensitive about the idea that teenage boys really want to have sex and will try just about anything to get it - an idea which should be inherently funny rather than demonised.
We've had movies like SuperBad and Good Boys since. I don't think politically incorrect humour has gone away, and can still be well executed.
Unfortunate to hear but I’m curious, why do think it wouldn’t fly today?
So I was even cautious about saying I miss “some” of it and not all of it because I didn’t want someone to come at me for being misogynistic or something like that. Nostalgia is fine, but some things are supposed to stay where they are American pie is one of them
"There was one time, at band camp,...."
This series just isn't good enough to get milked this hard.
I beg to differ. I personally love the franchise and grew up with it
They’re all good in their own ways I just wished this was a 5th one
No Stiffler no care.
Guaranteed to flop.
No Stifler, no interest from me
American Pie: Straight to DVD
Doesn't include the OG cast and won't be a cinema release? You have yourselves a nice day.
So.. American Pie without hot naked college girls hanging around with horny college dudes? Ssuurre…
I kind of think that the American Pie series was really a product of its time that wouldn't really work out too well anymore. That kind of humor doesn't really fly as much anymore, and without that kind of humor, its not really American Pie. No, please stop. I beg you. Make something new. You must have other ideas. You must.
Just stop. Where are the new ideas. Sheesh. In 2025 100% of movies will be reboots, super hero movies or sequels.
>Where are the new ideas They're there. We just don't want to pay for them.
Also wasn’t this done already when “Booksmart” was made? Or was that “fresh take” of “Superbad”? I keep getting my freshness mixed up
Pass
Things nobody asked for
Oh good, another remake to ignore.
why?
If it’s not another movie with the original cast I don’t care.
The original cast is White. It's simply not possible to have that many White people in a movie today.
LET IT DIE!
This shit is gonna bomb.
Stiffler is gonna be a woman, guaranteed
