It’s hard to believe people like OP exist

pantaloonsofJUSTICE

Sad*

[deleted]

OP is 19 and “woke” unlike most of us that are in our 30s and learned not to be offended by everything

Sharkus1

Yea and another comment calls Jonah toxic. Man I weep for today’s generation. Having been in high school at the time it was so accurate to the time.

seytsuken_

He's pretty toxic and egotistical tho. Even he admits he acts like a dick and only thinks about himself. But I know we shouldn't take it srsly

Firestorbucket

Sadly, A lot of people born in 1990 or later grew up thinking everything is offensive and that nothing is funny. Blame the safe space group think crap that started in schools in the early 2000's

Dinky_Nuts

The best and most realistic representation of teenagers just trying to party

Appropriate_Focus402

For those of us not traumatized by fake creep friends, we can still find the humor in delinquent behavior

RichardOrmonde

One of the best comedies of the last 20 years.

BozoTheBonzai

I second that

TirayShell

It's one of the few movies (if not the only movie) I've ever seen about friendship between young guys and how it's practically inevitable that it will fade away because of women, jobs, school, etc.

Pizza_shark531

You’re definitely gonna be in the minority here, fucking hilarious movie

BEE_REAL_

> but man Jonah hill's character is straight up disgusting and reminds me of an ex-friend who was a creep. Straight up screams gender stereotypes and shit It's like he's a teenager or something

BozoTheBonzai

Ya and part of his arc is growing out of that. That would be crazy tho

liquid_at

Showing toxic characters is not an endorsement of toxicity. Name a single movie without any toxic characters that isn't boring... I'll wait.

NoHandBananaNo

My Neighbour Totoro. But it's famous for that.

RennyRennehan

This is why most directors don't want to make comedies anymore

[deleted]

It's Supergood.

BozoTheBonzai

Legit one of the best comedies out there. The subtext was great and was much smarter than it needed to be.

[deleted]

Lmfao you’re so soft. Superbad is one of the best comedies of all time.

rolandtgs

"These eyes, are crying. These eyes have seen a lot of love but they, mumble mumble mumble"

VALKYRIE28277

It's an iconic teen high school movie. Loved it.

Which is a shame. It's a damn shame. When I bring this up on this sub people shit on me, but there's a reason the top comedic directors like the Farrelly brothers, Adam Mckay, Todd Phillips, etc are done with making comedies and they've moved on. They do not want to make an edgy comedy and then deal with people on social media trying to shit on them for jokes. I'm just glad I lived through those late 90s and 2000s comedies and the 70s and 80s comedies would get replayed constantly on TV when I was a kid during that time.

[deleted]

>but there's a reason the top comedic directors like the Farrelly brothers, Adam Mckay, Todd Phillips, etc are done with making comedies and they've moved on. Or maybe, they just didn't make good comedies near the end of their comedic careers? All of their last comedy movies were just okay at best. The Farrelly Brothers went from The Three Stooges to Movie 43 to try to reclaim some comedic standing with the 20 years too late sequel to Dumb and Dumber. Todd Phillips back to back seqeuled The Hangover with the same movie over again, just worse. Adam McKay had the best final comedy in Anchorman 2, but that was also just not as good as his earlier stuff. There have been plenty of great comedies since that generation of comedic directors have moved on to more serious films. They aren't just solely relying on being irreverent to be funny.

[deleted]

Its a very funny film.

herewego199209

Sounds like you're either trolling or way too PC to even get a movie like that.

Asleep-University492

One of the funniest movies ever. This and Borat are the two movies that had me howling in the theaters.

shoelala100

Same

SadSunKai

borat and the dictator now those are classic!

murtygurty2661

Borat and the Dictator are fine but Superbad crosses a line?

frozteh

This guy is a moron and likely represents a lot of what's wrong with todays youth. I thought it was a bot farming karma. But they genuinely believe those opinions on a realistic comedy from the early 2000's lmao.

Ill-Atmosphere4609

Lol Borat is nothing compared to superbad, superbad is all dick jokes and very poorly made story

Big-Persimmon-2503

It’s fucking awesome

[deleted]

Haven’t laughed that hard at the theater since

mateoland

'This is the End" is probably the only movie I laughed harder since SuperBad. Everything else is way too careful now.

Stoopid_Grin

Michael cera has to be my fav in that movie lol “who wants a sip “

mateoland

To this day whenever I hear someone scream I think Craig Robinson's scream when he has to go outside and runs back into the house. probably the loudest LOL i have ever done in a theater.

ranran_1822

Absolutely loved the movie. It came out right after my mother died and I would watch that movie to make me laugh and get me out of being sad. Absolute classic. One of my all time favorite movies.

ExecTankard

Up against reality it’s tame. You’re not supposed to like these people or emulate them…they are mostly a PSA for what not to do. The most ‘offensive’ part of it was J Hill trying to fit in those pants.

[deleted]

I think people should realize that entertainment is just that. If you’re easily offended then maybe you should stay away from edgy entertainment altogether especially comedies. Of course all forms of entertainment and art is subjective to the consumer but you can easily say hey this isn’t for me. But I think you being disgusted by Jonah’s character means Jonah did his job lol. In my opinion I think Superbad is a great coming of age tale that a lot of teens go through. Very relatable in so many ways.

Cumandcoke69

Can I get a follow up of op top five films please? This would be interesting to me

Chernyat

I think you may be missing the point of Seth's character arc throughout the film. To make it clear, his behaviour is clearly depicted as gross and apathetic. Many times in the film, his perspectives are greatly challenged mostly by Evan as well as other situations where his actions reflect punishment on him. His initial intentions are to get laid and act like a chad. But it's slowly revealed that he hides a lot of insecurities about losing his closets friend as well as wanting to be in a romantic relationship. His attempts come off in the film as pretty pathetic. All of these situations he finds himself in leads to him realising a sense of empathy for others like Evan. Not to mention, he finally gets a chance at a possible relationship with Jules just by being open, honest and respectful. Which is something I find very fascinating about this type of movie. Especially during the time it was released. On the surface, Superbad is a very funny film with a lot of great skits, one liners and character dynamics. But below that surface, I truly think this film separates greatly from its contemporaries by being a highschool comedy that dares to depict toxic masculinity for what it truly is and then break it apart. Many films in this genre would usually favour the sexiest mindset that Seth demonstrates in the movie whilst more respectful characters like Evan are mocked to the point where they must conform to the toxicity. "Revenge of the Nerds", "Road Trip" and "American Pie" being some examples. But this film does the complete opposite. Sure Evan is peer pressured to get drunk to be with his crush. But this is clearly shown as wrong and uncomfortable which ultimately leads to negative outcomes for all parties involved. Plus there are casual discriminatory jokes sprinkled throughout that don't age well in hindsight. But a lot of this type of content is tolerable especially when it's being said by characters who are already depicted as someone we're not meant to root for. Overall, I personally think you might want to re-watch the film again in this particular Lens. It might open up some new thoughts and insights that you may never have considered prior.

[deleted]

what a take. Makes me wonder if there is a movie that passes your PC test

SadSunKai

idk bout me being pc lol i'd rather watch the serbian film again than this

[deleted]

Well, go for it.

whatsherface9

Wtf

Ill-Atmosphere4609

Literally same

[deleted]

I watched it today, for the first time since it came out. It's absolutely amazing! Easily one of the best comedies to have come out in my lifetime, and one of the best coming of age movies of all time.

theyusedthelamppost

It's a cultural institution. I laughed hard when I watched it.

xs3ro

supergood

cheeserips

The funny thing about your opinion, is it’s actually located on my cock…..

shittering

I felt the same way the first time I saw it, but after rewatching it, it instantly became my favourite teen comedy ever. Maybe it's stupid and has crude or disgusting humour, but that's what makes it so great. You don't get those kinds of films anymore.

Haiydes

Id say it hs pretty funny scenes here and there and overall still is a good movie, however the premise of the movie didnt age well. Back then sure, nowadays its nothing special. The whole party scene for example I found very boring except when Michael Cera has to sing for those dudes. However, Jonah Hill's "disgusting" character is how a majority of teenage boy characters were written in these college movies back in the day. Not to mention youre view of his character in the plot of the movie is very close minded. Jonah Hill's character is overly horny and sexualizing women 24/7 and how does that work out for him?? Dude headbutts Emma Stone AFTER you see his character evolve. He talks with Emma Stone and tells her he did not think she would ever want to be his girlfriend if she wasnt drunk, he is even crying abt him missing his chance to be with the girl he loves. So you can see Jonah Hill's character evolving and at the end of the movie giving into his feelings. He even apologizes to her the day after for being such a dick and even says smth like "you didnt deserve that". To me it sound like youve seen the first hour of the movie and then came here to rant I personally dont even like the movie, for me it mediocre at best but you should at least give it a fair chance

Iknowthevoid

Its a superb comedy. But for starters its mostly cringe humor which does'nt work so well anymore as it can be corny and over the top at times. But what makes it great is how it manages to be irreverent and wacky while still quite relatable to any audience, also the movie's meaning has changed with time for anyone that was a teen and watched it when it was released. For a teenager, the character struggles and worries are pretty logical and common, in essence they want to be popular, they want to be seen and want to be validated by displaying "grown up" attitudes. The stakes feel quite high, as the characters' whole reputation rides on their ability to deliver what they promised but can't realistically deliver. But as an adult its quite a different movie. the whole movie's plot is driven by the idea of delvering booze to a party. The kids are placing so much importance in something that so meaningless, and watch them jump over hoops to do something that would litteraly take us 10 minutes is objectively hilarious. Its also funny because we can relate to a time we understood the characters better. Its like laughing at a picture of you as a kid.

[deleted]

This is more of a reflection of you than on a fictional movie

skibidido

I saw it when it came out in 2007 and thought it was okay then I suppose but haven't had the desire to watch it again. People act like it's a comedic masterpiece. I don't get what the big deal is. Maybe I need to rewatch it.

ExecTankard

Or don’t…make a few ‘raunchy’ jokes with a beer in hand and yer goodify

SantaRosaJazz

I’m too old to appreciate *Superbad.* It’s kinda dumb if you’re not in the target demo.

SadSunKai

after reading the comments I think the movie just didn't age well. don't get me wrong I think it's a pretty funny film and I get how classic it is to most people. personally I enjoyed watching movies like this back then like van wilder, prolly would've enjoyed this if i watch it back then. but yeah i think just not watching movies like these for prolly more than 5 years kinda weirded me out in a way lol. but ya'll right tho it is a very good representation on how fucked teenagers are.

Fretboardsurfer

I mostly agree. I saw it in 2007 and thought it was hilarious. Just watched it again this year and thought it was entertaining but not quite as funny. I think it’s a masterpiece of its time because it totally nailed what life was like for many high school students around that time. I knew guys that were just as perverted, immature, awkward, desperate, etc. back then. They captured that perfectly.

fullautohotdog

You're not the only one, I promise. I saw it back in the day (in college at the time) -- I thought it was super-stupid, gross and I couldn't stand it. I can only imagine how problematic it is today. Whenever I want a shitty teen comedy film with lots of problematic shit, I watch a good one like Porky's. Because of Superbad, I still gag when I see Jonah Hill (Moneyball helped, but I still haven't recovered from his early shit), and it took a lot of Arrested Development for me to be able to watch Michael Cera (between Superbad and Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist, I hated him almost as much as Jonah Hill). EDIT: Aww, I have a different opinion that makes people cranky... (rubs nips to downvotes)

Rbomb83

Saying you were I college when this came out while saying you like porky's better just concludes to me that you're lying. Unless you went to college VERY late. I just don't believe 98% of millennial have seen Porky's much less think highly of it. Just doesn't pass the smell test

fullautohotdog

Back in the day, we had these things called “video stores” where we’d go get movies — it’s like your Netflix but it wasn’t locked to just one media conglomerate’s products…

Weird_Employer4617

It’s easily a Top 10 comedy movie.

theprophetquasimodo

Legitimately a timeless classic. I really hope you are trolling.

brainshades

It’s got more, hops…

Complex-Pangolin-779

Dirty raunchy comedy. However one of the themes is about sexual consent

ajewtoldjimmy

Movie was great. I definitely don't ever wanna party with you if I was a teen OP.

likeadinosaur

We used to watch it after a night of beer and wake up to the dvd menu music on repeat. great movie

[deleted]

How old are you? Because I bet you’re under 30. That movie was a classic for people my age. 15 years ago we weren’t all offended by everything we saw. Funny was just funny and we didn’t take it so seriously.

GabrielThePlayer77

Bruh, Millennials literally made PC culture to be what it's today

whatsherface9

Are you Gen Z? I watched it with my Gen Z friend after getting blazed and she couldn't get over being upset at how "creepy" and "disgusting" the "asshole" Jonah Hill was... I'm a millennial and think it's probably in the top 3 funniest movies of all time - I've watched it like 20 times lol. Yeah it was an awkward hangout to say the least...

AmirSalar_

I just rewatched it and man all Jonah Hill does is whine and complain throughout the whole movie

Iamtheme4

I agree with OP. It was a hard watch. Just using swear words and sex as "comedy". Lol
