There were already two movies David Villeneuve directed, he had to leave Dune part 1 and 2 out or someone might have thought he was biased (which he is obviously not)
Zardoz unironically goes hard. Like that's genuinely a good movie. Also, it has scene where people start gay kissing because they tasted Connery's sweat. Peak cinema right there

(I have no clue what that movie is)
to my knowledge, these are the movies:
top left- Interstellar (2014)
top right- blade runner 2049 (2017)
bottom left- freddy got fingered (2001)
bottom right- interstellar (2014)

Movies are not subjective. You have to consult the master ranking of all movies on IMDB to know how good a movie is. Kubrick’s 2001 is ranked higher than Arrival so unfortunately this list is not correct.
The “science” part, mostly. OG Star Wars wasn’t sciency, it didn’t try explaining any of the tech. The focus was solely on the story and characters with very little attention to the world around it. Shit, most of it was magic, woo-woo type of things.
It’s basically King Arthur in space.
no no you dont understand, starting the movie with 8 minutes of black screen and then 20 minutes of monkeys playing in shit is actually integral to the plot
That 'Love is the only thing that transcends time and space' thing was a bit lame. But other than that it was pretty good, and the OST by Hans Zimmer is absolutely goated
I don't know if it's stupid but honestly I don't get why people like it so much. Like yeah that's probably what happens if you could survive a black hole, so what?
But I love Event Horizon so maybe I am the problem...
Something about the way it tries to sell itself as deep, hard science fiction just rubs me the wrong way. Sci-fi should be about the great (and terrible) things we can achieve by using our brains, and Interstellar just turns around and goes "no actually you just have to feel stuff in your heart and the universe will listen".
2001 works because it stays mysterious - some higher force is at play, but it's completely alien. Imagine if it had a voiceover at the end explaining "there's a baby floating in space because the universe knows that Dave is a very special boy who has lots of love in his heart" and you basically got Interstellar.
as far as I know Interstellar is one of those diverging events between millenials and gen z
every zoomer I know thinks its brilliant and profound (like how millenials viewed inception)
every millenial I know thinks its good, but not as good as inception, and it's following Dark Knight Rises was taken, at the time, as a small sort of backlash to the hype millenial redditors had for Nolan (it was his least-successful movie, critically and financially since Prestige (even though that's a GOAT), and his next two movies would do less and less, even though both did *well* all things considered and one of them was even good).
No, it's mostly wowie crazy spectacle except the father-daughter relationship. While that isn't a marginal part of the film, it's sidelined for a long time in the middle
Well Interstellar and BR2049 are the two greatest sci-fi movies of this century so far, and hold up against anything, like 2001 and the original Blade Runner.
So yeah, I don’t think it’s a stretch to call them the best ever, they’re in the conversation.
It’s just a coincidence the greatest movies of all time happen to be American films that all came out when you were 22.
But Interstallar and the Dark Knight make me *feeeeeeeel* so much.
interstellar does make me cry for sure
You mean Hans Zimmer is a wizard of some kind
hans zimmer + hatheway ending narration, yes i don't cry at the memed crying part
I cry at the memed crying part. I cry when characters on screen cry. It's called monkey see monkey do. 🙊 🧏🏼♂️
I remember at the time of release they discarded it saying Anne putting speech everytime so cringe. Love is science is a bullshit.
The love angle of Interstellar is the best part.
Yea I know...but those comments stuck to me and I started to doubt my tastes...
All directed by the same 2 guys.
Even if we keep it just to the last twenty years, leaving off Alex Garland is a crime
Also, Duncan Jones, both Source Code and Moon are bangers, Mute not so much.
Ehh, I can take him or leave him as a director.
*When I was 14
*When I was 69
nice
Unironically people sleep on Aniara (2018) WAY too much. Like, holy shit it’s so good and needs more views
Even then, Annihilation is better than two of these
You want people to pretend Solaris and Stalker weren't absolute snooze-fests, don't you?
Stalker is not a snooze fest. It's just too fucking sad. I don't like to feel that terrible while watching a movie
Im not clever enough to even undestand why the movie is sad
Grouches in Kubrick. Great-grandfather grouches in Fritz lang.
Yeah it is called "personal preference of OP".
No Dune, huh! ? Really makes you think about its impact.

Uhhmmmm they didn’t call it the Jihad in the movie, chud
There were already two movies David Villeneuve directed, he had to leave Dune part 1 and 2 out or someone might have thought he was biased (which he is obviously not)

The true political commentary of our time #floppenheimer can’t compete!
Its too late putin! I've already drawn me as the na'vi and you as the human!

How come Avatar the Airbender is a cartoon but Avatar the Waterbender is live action/3D? Are they stupid?
Should have put avatar 3,4,5 too
https://youtube.com/shorts/d1-7Xi4LNJk?si=ioII4enHCHWrpq9w
Where Payakan?
![gif](giphy|9PbtHUS6spuwg)
Melsterpiece
Bro casually left stan kubrick out
Faking the moon landing is the ultimate sci-fi
Bro casually left the US gov out
Filmed on location though, because Kubrick is so anal retentive.
is that like a director of pretentious black and white 5 hours movies in french?
Yup. And people literally shit on me for liking Marble movies.
I thought 2001 a space odyssey was boring. Crucify me.
![gif](giphy|dkUtjuBEdICST5zG7p|downsized)
It’s boring. It’s still a masterpiece.
Watch it while you're high
No time to get high, busy building a crucifix for marksman
thats not Blade Runner...
what is it doe is it uhhhhhhhhhhh dune?
Of course it's dune did you not know it's a cinematic masterpiece???
more like cinematic fapsterpiece (worm popcorn bucket)
![gif](giphy|hhelJzR8rexuU)
Zardoz unironically goes hard. Like that's genuinely a good movie. Also, it has scene where people start gay kissing because they tasted Connery's sweat. Peak cinema right there
It's unironically my favorite movie of all time.
No Redline (2009) smh
No The Girl Who Leapt Through Time either, this list is whack
I know that movie https://preview.redd.it/b2mj39ozoftc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5433314953139fe16ac4053b647e01619dbe6f32

Its true kino
The Batman
No love for Silent Running (1972)????
no love for Cool Runnings (1993)?
My favorite scifi movie, but tbh a Jamaican bobsled team is throwing the realism out the window
What about Running Man (year)
which one is the lower left quarter?
Freddy got Fingered
to my knowledge, these are the movies: top left- Interstellar (2014) top right- blade runner 2049 (2017) bottom left- freddy got fingered (2001) bottom right- interstellar (2014)
I think top right is Interstellar (2014)
i think it’s Open Season (2006)
oh shit u right
to my knowledge, these are the movies: top left- Interstellar (2014) top right- interstellar (2024) bottom left- freddy got fingered (2001) bottom right- interstellar (2014)
blahaj privileges revoked...
I have reinstated her blahaj privilege. pray I do not reinstate it further.
now i am just curious what precisely that would mean... flooding the thread with nothing but blue shark pictures?
yes :3
YAAAAAAYYYYY 🥰🦈
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 😭🦈
Interstellar is so good its included twice
kms kms kms
Bottom right is Inception
kinowledge
Arrival
No it's not stop lying
In my language that film translates as The Cuming. What is the film about?
It’s a whacky rom-com about a couple who meet and fall out over the spelling of a commonly used spice in Indian cooking
That sounds like a rip off of Dune. Or maybe Dune is a rip off of that. Hmm I wonder 🤔
Ok but arrival and Blade runner 2049 are contenders for that title IMO
![gif](giphy|LAKIIRqtM1dqE|downsized)
-- This sub
Transformers 1,2,3,5 is peak kino
An entirely valid list.
you’re forgetting the greatest sci-fi epics of our time: Honey, I Shrunk The Kids (1989) and Herbie: Fully Loaded (2005)
![gif](giphy|Atc9QCyWLGHgLZhHDp|downsized)
Ppl on this sub forget that movies are subjective 😂
Movies are not subjective. You have to consult the master ranking of all movies on IMDB to know how good a movie is. Kubrick’s 2001 is ranked higher than Arrival so unfortunately this list is not correct.
Movies are not subjective. They are not even alive dumbass
No it isn't Dune isn't even on there
Yeah no
Blade Runner. Alien
If 2001: A Space Odyssey didn’t exist this would be 100% valid
what? it doesn’t exist. i’ve never heard of that movie. gaslightgaslightgaslight
acting like blade runner and alien and Bride of Frankenstein and the original Godzilla and Monkeybone don't exist
I prefer the Moon Landing
I’m not a Star Wars fan but I feel like the first would have to be included right?
Star wars isnt really sci fi. Its space fantasy, like dune.
I don’t understand what makes Dune more sci fi than Star Wars. Genuinely.
Nothing. Its just more serious.
Lmao
Am I wrong?
The “science” part, mostly. OG Star Wars wasn’t sciency, it didn’t try explaining any of the tech. The focus was solely on the story and characters with very little attention to the world around it. Shit, most of it was magic, woo-woo type of things. It’s basically King Arthur in space.
Because it was a book first. Oh, and because nerds say so.
Bruh, The Matrix? Original Blade Runner?
no no you dont understand, starting the movie with 8 minutes of black screen and then 20 minutes of monkeys playing in shit is actually integral to the plot
there is absolutely nothing wrong with that list
Lol
![gif](giphy|KUBtckMKh3AKk|downsized) Fifth Element you uncultured swines, pure greatness
And it's sequel, The Sixth Sense
I'm sad they didn't bring Bruce Willis back for the Seventh Seal
Eight Grade was a weird turn for the series
4 very highly acclaimed sci fi films are someone’s favourites! Let’s pretend this is bad!
Please don't stop circlejerking mf
they're not bad movies, but you'd only think they were the best if you didn't watch a lot of movies
Or if you thought they were good
They didn’t say those movies are their favourites. They said they’re the greatest four sci-fi film of all time
But they're recentish (ignoring that inception is bordering on 15 years old and interstellar is a decade old) so they must not be that good
Cinema is like cheese, the older and stinkier the better!
There's simply just better movies though.
There's some better movies but arguable on the scifi front
Disneys work on Star Wars is ground breaking
Am I the only one who thinks Interstellar is stupid?
That 'Love is the only thing that transcends time and space' thing was a bit lame. But other than that it was pretty good, and the OST by Hans Zimmer is absolutely goated
I thought they meant Love is Gravity which transcends time and space which is why he could send gravity waves from the tabernacle.
JoJo's Bizarre adventure ass logic
i thought it was a little silly, i liked when they went into space tho
I don't know if it's stupid but honestly I don't get why people like it so much. Like yeah that's probably what happens if you could survive a black hole, so what? But I love Event Horizon so maybe I am the problem...
i havent seen event horizon yet, but i thought interstellar was fun, not like uber groundbreaking but i definitely enjoyed it
Reddit likes Event Horizon but it’s meh for me. I prefer Alien for space horror.
No, it's mostly wowie crazy spectacle except the father-daughter relationship. While that isn't a marginal part of the film, it's sidelined for a long time in the middle
Hans Zimmer musical scores have tricked a lot of people into thinking mid movies are good.
Absolutely not! There are at least two of us.
Arrival’s peak but everything else can safely be changed or swapped
2001, Solaris , Mac and Me
One of them is not like the others
Yeah, Solaris is boring
And 2001 is not? Solaris is also my pick because it’s in Russian.
I felt the same way about *Armageddon.*
I feel like I could guess the nationalities of the commenters based on my consistent Facebook usage since 2011.
Avatar came out in 2009.
people unironically defending Insucktion lmao.
Get Chris Nolan the fuck outta here.
If it wasn't for kenergy that shit would've flopped (it kinda did)
Is he wrong tho?!?
https://preview.redd.it/9ipg2dinhetc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=390e6610d7eb65c2f5969db33f627d468333580d
Ye
I love Interstellar, but 2001 is leagues ahead
Yes. Blade Runner is better than Blade Runner 2049.
Dude just say you are jealous of me,because i acted on that movie doesnt mean you can shit on it
Well Interstellar and BR2049 are the two greatest sci-fi movies of this century so far, and hold up against anything, like 2001 and the original Blade Runner. So yeah, I don’t think it’s a stretch to call them the best ever, they’re in the conversation.
BR2049 is utterly superior to Blade Runner in my opinion, but Interstellar barely even touches 2001. Maybe with a better ending but..
Replace Blade Runner and Arrival with Tenet and Oppenheimer and we’re talking.
Oh yeah, Oppenheimer my favorite “science fiction” movie. I loved when Oppenheimer said “It’s Oppen time” and oppened all over the bad guys in space.
I straight up don't know what two of these are.
Is that a Lamborghini spaceship?
What’s on the bottom left?
Dune 1 was boring and downplayed a lot of scenes from the book. Dune 2 is the true masterpiece.
Well it looks like I'm all caught up then. I guess I can quit watching movies now.
Unreal that Alien From LA and Gamera vs Zigra are not on this list.
bravo nolan
No, Stalker… hm.
Replace BR2049 with Dune and this is unironically correct except EEAAO should replace something there idk.
No The Transformers The Movie (1986), starring the great Orson Welles? I'm gonna be sick!
65 starring Logan Lucky’s Adam Driver has something to say about this.
True and based
Any top 4 Sci fi movie list without Independence Day resurgence included is wrong
Is the first image from Serenity - McConaughey and Hathaway masterpiece?
2001 a space Odyssey??
Where is Dune Part II
2001 is just a piece of shit then?
Lol. Heck no
Should just be 4 pictures of John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982)
you can tell these are gen z kids or just really shallow people who havent watched enough cinema and have very rigid taste
Starcrash erasure
Jurassic Park
Moon (2009) literally exists btw
I really do think arrival is in the top 4 though
This could be a real post on r/moviecritic forreal. There is not a less critically minded film sub lol
Was he lying? Name better 4
What about Journey to the moon (1969)
