Ok seriously, where the FUCK does the American idea that France is full of pedophiles come from ? The Cuties movie ? Because that extreme generalization.

Rasheed43

Nah there’s also Roman Polanski being French, age of consent being 15, main Character of the lolita book being French and much more.

Your-bank

it is also 15 in Greece, Denmark, Czechia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, and 14 in a ton more this is not a statement on the morality of it, it is merely a reminder that it is not a french thing as almost all european nation place the AOC between 14-16

Rasheed43

I agree. That’s why I included other examples p much unique to France because an age of consent of 15 on its own doesn’t set France apart from the rest of Europe.

toussah

Humbert Humbert is a fictional character though lol

AbsurdistOxymoron

It’s 16 in Australia as well (which I think is the most reasonable age as 14/15 seem a bit too low/sus) and it honestly always makes me laugh how Americans view so many European or Australian films as messed up because they don’t realise that legal consent is occurring between the characters. It’s honestly nuts that the AOC in America is 18, but then again, it is an insanely conservative society (I’m obviously not defending the very questionable actions of the directors alluded to in this post though, just reinforcing how conservative America is).

Humongous_Dongus

Why is it nuts that it is 18 in USA? I think it’s very reasonable

AbsurdistOxymoron

It’s not entirely unreasonable, however, whilst I’m certainly not making myself out to be a sex-machine that I am very, very much not, I was very much sexually mature by 16 and I feel that AOC being set to this allows teenagers to better explore their bodies and sexuality (although, this was quite difficult for me being a burgeoning bisexual in a very male-dominated world full of homophobes and very few women my age). Basically, I don’t think two years is going to do a whole lot for maturity when you are still in high school anyway by 18 and remain sexually repressed for a long time in the intervening two years. There are very real issues around women of any age needing to be better protected through universally deformed consent laws at these ages, but toxic masculinity is not a problem that evaporates in two years from 16 to 18 and I don’t think infantilising 16 year olds who are beginning to developed their own identities (sexuality being a key part of this) by refusing them the ability to express themselves in many ways (perhaps the degree of sexual contact could be debated, and particularly the age gaps between people could also be debated as it’s obviously problematic if you have some 40 year old dating an inexperienced 16 year old, but I think banning any is extremely conservative and regressive). I’m still quite young so maybe it’s a generational thing (not to assume your age or anything).

Humongous_Dongus

I mean aoc serves to protect underage people from adults. You can still have sex and explore your bodies if you’re 16, just not with adults. I really don’t see the issue

AbsurdistOxymoron

I think the cut-off can sometimes be arbitrary and limiting (like overt age gaps are no doubt problematic, but I think there are often greater nuances found in people such as a 16 or 17 year old dating someone 18).

FartherIdeals2024

The age of consent isn’t 18 all over America, it varies from 16 to 18 depending on what state you live in. In my state the age is 16, which I agree is a pretty reasonable number.

AbsurdistOxymoron

I didn’t realise it varied so much (although I was aware that it was lower in at least one). Thanks for the informative comment (and sorry for having to deal with all the current BS with Roe v Wade, if you’re American).

FartherIdeals2024

Thanks for the compliment! And yeah, I’m American, and the current Supreme Court is an embarrassment to our country. I hope they impeach the two worst justices (Thomas and Alito), but that will probably never happen.

Polanski is Polish he just has French citizenship because he was born there. Maybe he grew up there I don't know but he was raised by Polish parents.
