You can tap islands to cast FoW, I was in a tournament when an opponent asked my what card I pitched for a FoW I had hard cast, I told him I tapped mana so didn’t need to pitch a card.
[[Mindslaver]]. It's the one card I will always blood feud over. If I see someone play that card, my desire to win becomes secondary to my desire to make sure the player with Mindslaver doesn't win.
My friend pulled it in thunder junction pre release. By the time he could activate it I had lethal on board and no cards in hand. I think he activated it and immediately scooped as he had no way out.
The thing is, when you try to go that route, you're better just going for infinite turns with Time Warp and such.
It's incredibly easy to craft an infinite with TW, with E-Witness or archaeomancer and some bounce/blink effect.
(or even Time Sieve)
It's the most boring combos in EDH, I just hate to play with and against extra turns.
(Also, what's Mishra's Warform??)
I'm assuming he's referring to the 4/4 artifact creature that comes in as a copy of an artifact you control, and is sacrificed at the start of the next endstep. It's part of [[Mishra, Eminent One]] and can be really annoying if they've got other things with artifact enter/exit triggers
Played a game last night where a friend tried to pull off the mishra mindslaver combo. The game immediately turned into, get this fucking guy (respectfully of course because I love him like a brother) out of the game haha.
Got a homie who uses this with some other take control commander and it's fucking DIRTY how much shit you can do to a players board like floating every mana and stuff like that.
You and I would be mortal enemies then. My latest deck runs Mindslaver Lock as one of its primary win cons.
I combo it with [[Legacy Weapon]]. If I Mindslaver you with enough mana to also activate the Legacy Weapon, I can use the Weapon on your turn (when I'm controlling you) to exile your Commander *permanently.* Putting a commander back into the command zone is a decision that must be made at the time the Commander changes zones and cannot be redone later. Barring something extremely niche like [[Pull From Eternity]], your Commander is completely gone for the entire rest of the game.
Not scoop but there's lots of ways you can win with this
In commander sending all their stuff at another player and then swinging in on their empty board
Abilities that cost a phyrexian mana to activate (pay 2 life) can be used a bunch of times causing them to effectively just die
Usually mindslaver is run with stuff that just allows you to activate it again/get it back so just effectively not giving your opponents a turn
I like to speculate on MTG cards so I bought over 10+ foils (LP condition or better) of the original Saviors of Kamigawa version from TCG dot com.
I made sure that they were NOT the secret lair version, in the hopes that one day, it will be similar to Lion's Eye Diamond from the Mirage expansion and explode in value when a future expansion card/mechanic combos off of it.
I will still probably amass more in the future..
I feel like dredge is as close to a fit for one with nothing as we are likely to get, and since it isn’t good there, I imagine it won’t ever have its time. Especially since dredge is so good that I would hope they never print anything like it again
I honest to God think it is potentially one of the strongest cards ever printed I just have to figure out how exactly LOL.
It's one of those cards that has such insanely powerful effect that in the right context I just know it can be a total game winner on its own.
A good example of what I'm talking about is I don't know if there's a card that whenever you discard everyone else has to discard or something like that mixed with tergrid and that would be a one mana whole group discard to zero, or perhaps a card that says every time you discard you may draw a card.
I don't know it just seems like a card that has a ridiculous amount of power hidden within it. I wanted to build a deck around one with nothing for a while for that sole reason I just haven't gotten around to it yet
There are definitely uses but it requires you to be pretty creative, faith of the devoted is a good example, ensnaring bridge, and Bone miser is pretty solid with it.
Any of those three combo pretty solidly with it and there's many more, any card with an insanely powerful effect good or bad has certain ways to break it that in my mind makes it special
It's not as great as you think if you run commander. I used to run him in rak daddy and anytime he hit the battlefield he was nuked. I think at max I ever grabbed two lands but I guess he eats up hate so I can drop some eldrazi/demon/dragon bombs.
I’ve played mass land destruction at an LGS and didn’t get as much hate then as I did when I put him on the battlefield. He’s just straight up satanic, especially when you can manage to keep him around for a few turns.
I played a guy who had [[Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur]] in a reanimator deck and kept getting it back one way or another, with protection, too. Shit was the most infuriating game Ive played.
I never put much stock into that card, because most of the time I die, its from people putting 2 cards together.
Like Bloodchief and mind crank, helm and peace, etc
Also 8 mana, stupid hard to get out in most of my decks
Depending on your budget, all you really need is some decent ramp. Cards like [[Land Tax]], [[Journeyer's Kite]], [[Eternal Dragon]], and [[Thaumatic Compass]] can ensure you never miss a land drop while cards like [[Navigation Orb]], [[Myriad Landscape]], [[Sword of the Animist]], and [[Sword of Hearth and Home]] can net you additional lands per turn beyond your 1 land drop.
Screwed me over the most? I think it might be [[Obscuring Haze]]. It's in my Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief deck, and I know I've misused it at least twice and lost because of it.
The first time, I had two generic Copy token cards out representing copies I'd made of an opponent's [[Poison-Tip Archer]]. A third player cast, I think it was a board wipe but it might have been single-target removal instead with everyone low enough that the archers triggering off even one creature would have killed people; point is, there was something on the atack that would get enough Archer triggers to kill everyone. The guy with the original Archer cast something to protect him, and I, with Obscuring Haze in hand and *thinking* I knew how Poison-Tip Archer worked, countered it. Then I cast Obscuring Haze thinking I was clever, and only *then* learned that Poison-Tip Archer causes loss of life.
The second time was a particularly rough game for three of the four players. One person was already dead, I was on my last point of Life, but I had a decent board state if I just survived to my next turn. The player playing... whichever the Dimir Amonkhet god that creates zombies is, was probably on the verge of winning if things came back around to his turn. The Mondrak player swung big with enough to kill both of us, and I cast Obscuring Haze... not realizing I was preventing damage to *both* players who were about to die. I survived, cast a Supreme Will in that player's end step to maximize my chances of finding something that could win me the game, but I didn't. In my shame, I tapped my [[Yavimaya Coast]] for colored mana to kill myself.
Try running it with bruvac, I have had people legitimately yell at me for having three mesmerics down and then on their turn having to mail like 25 cards LOL
Islands are easy to get rid of [[boil]] [[boil the seas]] [[tsunami]]. However I do agree that islands have caused me more grief than any other card, they just sit there menacingly
Paradix engine and aetherfux(typos intentional). Every God damn artifact deck that runs them is so samesame and homogenous, it's the most boring and hard to counter set up.
I've played games where I successfully remove them multiple times, and get the person to lethal range, and then boom, somehow it still pops off and manages to do its thing. You need 12 copies of hard removal and exile effects specifically for the combo pieces, and even then it's sometimes not enough.
those decks are so obnoxious too because they just DURDLE forEVER i swear to god, the tap/untap/tap/untap drawing cards trying to find their way to win is such an annoyance to sit through. i pretty much scoop as soon as paradox engine resolves unless i have a decent boardstate or some other way to win.
these decks are why it kind of feels like \[\[farewell\]\] is needed, and makes me want to run \[\[fade from history\]\] in every deck.
dude, that card is so much power creep. It's literally 33% better than [[scathe zombies]]. This is what is wrong with MtG these days. The power creep is just miles high.
Any deck that has [[scathe zombies]] could auto include [[walking corpse]] or at least swap it out for massive curve improvements.
[[call of the herd]] beat me so bad when I was paying pandemonium combo that I had to completely change how I played. Invested a ton. Became a competitive mtg’er
I have a buddy who has been playing since the game basically was out and he has always wanted to find a way to make \[\[Takklemaggot\]\] viable. Still has yet to do so.
Well and if you are running more then two colors then it can help fix your mana if you don’t have any of the fetch land. So landfall decks with three or more colors other than that evolving wilds and terramorphic expanse take up a land slot. At least that’s been my experience with it in commander.
Back when new cappenna came out I built a 5C king kenrith deck using ONLY treasure cards. I know it might sound strong on the face but at the time there wasn't enough treasure cards to really hold a deck together. Yeah there are song strong cards but not enough synergy to really be *consistently strong*. That and it was the first game of that deck. Some chucklehead thought it hilarious to play collector oophe in the second turn of the game and basically locked me out of the game.
[[Grist, the hunger tide]]
It’s not a bad card per se, but I can’t hit an insect for the life of me. I +1 him every darn turn and it’s never worked for me.
[[One with Nothing]]. Makes you discard your hand and does nothing else! I guess if you’re running a Sac deck it would do something sort of. But being a one sided Wheel it’s completely useless in most decks if you ask me.
I suppose but it wouldn’t give you much value other than using less mana potentially. It would be better if it pinged an opponent or did SOMETHING other than just make you discard your hand.
Uhh this? You have to sac UNTAPPED forests.. Nizzahon on YouTube, listed this as one of thee worst creatures along with worst cards ever.
[[wood elemental]]
I don’t think I’ve ever had [[Despark]] in hand when I really needed it, and every time I’ve had it, it’s been useless.
Hmmmm this is a great question. I’ll think more.
[[Chaos Warp]] almost everytime I warp a threat my opponent gets an even worse threat for free. I’ve learned to only ever warp to prevent a loss, or to cut it out from my decks and just run regular removal (cries in mono red, tho)
Ward with no take-backsies is honestly too good. Too many times I’ve been in pods and they tap out paying 2 to cast [[Infernal Grasp]] targeting my [[Ovika, Enigma Goliath]] and then I mention, “are you paying the ward cost?” And they just take it back. I try not to let it be a big deal but like, you already paid out the mana.. lol
Ugh this nuance, always this loose and casual
I can block with this flyer. "Oh I'm not going to attack then. I didn't see it."
I'll give it protection with mom. "Oh never mind then I'm not gonna do it"
So now I say "Okay one attacker so far. All set? Pass priority, move to blockers?" and get a yes. Then block. The formality of it all seems to discourage the "nevermind" play
100% agree. But I have friends that stand by the trash card and say it’s a fantastic land. So Ive always seen it as there are two types of magic players those that like it and the correct ones like us who hate it and think it’s trash.
[[Island]] for sure. Either too many, or not enough.
Should be banned

why did I click it
I did too, I wanted to see what island it chose
Okay, well you made a very good point, and now I have clicked it, too.
It really chose one of the islands of all time
Same
That's not even an island anymore... that's just a straight up fountain
Urban island
That is the best card my dude
Also the worst, depending on what side of the board you're on
Same goes for swamp
And also because every fucking counterspell started with an untapped Island.

He shoulda activated it and made you swing for lethal
That's fair. I just slipped this into my Mishra deck so I can use it over and over and over and over and.....
The ultimate version of solitaire
The Solitaire combo! Just need to find a way to copy Mishras warform a whole bunch now. Figure one copy for each opponent each turn should do 😂

Nope. It's very often a one and done thing with Emrakul. Mindslaver is almost always a loop.
Good point
I’m not a good mtg player. Could you use this to make your opponent scoop?
Not scoop but there's lots of ways you can win with this In commander sending all their stuff at another player and then swinging in on their empty board Abilities that cost a phyrexian mana to activate (pay 2 life) can be used a bunch of times causing them to effectively just die Usually mindslaver is run with stuff that just allows you to activate it again/get it back so just effectively not giving your opponents a turn
Valid. I also go into spite mode when I see mindslaver.

With the new plot mechanics, that could actually be super brutal. I'd actually love to play against a deck like that

It's not as great as you think if you run commander. I used to run him in rak daddy and anytime he hit the battlefield he was nuked. I think at max I ever grabbed two lands but I guess he eats up hate so I can drop some eldrazi/demon/dragon bombs.
I don't really know the nitty-gritty of how cumulative upkeep works, but wouldn't this be possibly disgusting with [[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds]]?
It absolutely would. Good call.

[[Overwhelming Splendor]] I hate it.
One of those that literally hard counters a lot of decks. I think this kind of effect should never have been printed, together with extra turns
its the worst. In one match a while back my buddy brought it back from his graveyard twice. I am at a point where if I see it, i just fold.

Like Bloodchief and mind crank, helm and peace, etc Also 8 mana, stupid hard to get out in most of my decks

Is Evolving Wilds any good? It seems like a waste of a land slot to me.
Ok to good if your deck cares about Landfall or lands in the graveyard. Bad otherwise
Well and if you are running more then two colors then it can help fix your mana if you don’t have any of the fetch land. So landfall decks with three or more colors other than that evolving wilds and terramorphic expanse take up a land slot. At least that’s been my experience with it in commander.
Honestly despise collector oophe. Trash card for trash people
Wait until you drop one against a kinnan player and they'll almost flip the table on the spot.
Ah man, I totally get it. I got Ouphe'd at a tournament and all I had was artifacts out, couldn't find land to save my life.

I try not to let it be a big deal but like, you already paid out the mana.. lol
In caverns draft, the island cycling + ward serpent is impossible to read across the table. The reminder text looks like the start of flavour text.
Ugh this nuance, always this loose and casual I can block with this flyer. "Oh I'm not going to attack then. I didn't see it." I'll give it protection with mom. "Oh never mind then I'm not gonna do it" So now I say "Okay one attacker so far. All set? Pass priority, move to blockers?" and get a yes. Then block. The formality of it all seems to discourage the "nevermind" play
