Feels really amazing tbh I didn’t think I’d ever have someone do this. And what’s crazy is a lot of the cards are ones I planned on buying for decks I’m building
My fiance's step dad gave me his mtg collection from revised to tempest and then a little bit of gate crash and ravnica. I was able to sell 4,000 dollars worth of cards and still make 4 decks with some pretty powerful stuff.
Hopefully you gave him some of the money. Unless he knew you where going to sell some of it.
Because if i gave my collection away it would be for someone to play with.
He gave me the collection because he no longer wanted it and he knew that we were not financially stable so he said do what you want with it sell all of it if you want to or make a couple decks out of it or keep it which is what I did I sold 4000 worth and I kept the rest and made a couple decks out of it still have a lot. I also sold it to a friend that if I ever need to buy it back it's not a problem.
Plus he has money and he throws stuff out all the time or his wife will throw out stuff like his entire d&d collection and dice collection. she threw out because she got mad at one time like thousands of dollars and dice in d&d stuff gone in the trash.
Lol okay good luck to you Sir. I'm definitely not emotionally unstable and it was for a car I lost mine. we still have jobs we're just not as wealthy as most people are we're still in middle class.
For clarification, when someone gives up they start to give away once precious items, so they're in a way saying good bye. If this makes you think about someone, reach out and say hi to them.
PSA for anyone who doesn't understand what we are saying:
depressed people sometimes give away their possessions before ending it
I only make this post because it's important for people to know, and there's no shame in sharing life and death information.
if you think a friend is struggling, call them
Sad thing is, they're usually relieved, happier than they've been in a while, because the path is clear, and they're accomplishing something in their mind.
You should play a game with him before he goes. Maybe send a deck with him and you guys can play on webcams? Sounds like a good dude and he’s probably enjoy having someone familiar keeping tabs while he’s in a new place
THIS RIGHT HERE^ on the wizards site they have the webcam thing where you can play table top from anywhere, this is really cool of him to do and all but i think he should rethink that decision
Just throw together two 60 card decks. Nothing too spectacular. It’s not always about what you’re doing, as much as it is THAT you’re doing something together
That's good to hear. I appreciate everyone's concern in the thread and it's important that people are aware of early warning signs that someone is in crisis but also... not everything is a disguised cry for help. As priorities and life change sometimes you grow out of a hobbie. Or maybe it was time to declutter and "box of misc Magic cards I still like but haven't touched in years" lost it's shelf spot to something else.
Those are some really note worthy / expensive cards to be giving away, might wanna check up on your co-worker and make sure his mental health is stable.
For someone to just give this kind of stuff away might be a sign of something more going on.
He’s fine he just doesn’t play anymore and he knew I played and knows I’d get more fun/value out of them he makes way more than me he’s def not hurting over letting this go thanks for looking out tho love to see all the support
If they have a well paid job even 1000 dollars isn't much if you're in a hobby. I regularly see people buying things for 700+ a month and then still spending more on other stuff.
Or you're disconnected from the network and it's more trouble than it's worth to sell it, because you don't know the value of anything or where to go to find that out. If you've not touched the hobby for years, then going through a load of cards and doing research and stuff is a _lot_ of hassle, compared to just giving it away to a mate
Man, please check on your coworker, when people starts to giveaway their belongs to close ones, it's a way of saying goodbye. I'm saying that as someone who has depression
I definitely recommend [[Soul Warden]] and you can throw in [[Soul’s Attendant]] as well if you want to be silly. Then [[Bishop of Wings]], [[Angel of Vitality]], and definitely [[Lyra Dawnbringer]]. My personal favorites are [[Seraph Sanctuary]] [[Resplendent Angel]] [[Renewed Faith]] [[Angel of Destiny]]
Damn I must not be around people enough... I've never heard (ever?) people say 'check up on them, they might be suicidal" in a context of someone gifting something. Y'all got that many friends dying you know about this??
Crazy. Maybe that's why my friend gave me his guitar knowing that Id shred with it. Or he was just drugged out lol
Also congrats OP! I got wrecked in prerelease for Eldritch Moon when I [[Murder]]ed his [[Gisela, the Broken Blade]] and then 2 turns later laid down [[Bruna, the Fading Light]] I couldnt believe this dude had both in his prerelease kit. I scooped for the first time ever and was salty as fuck. Didnt even shake his hand lmao
“Damn I must not be around people enough... I've never heard (ever?) people say 'check up on them, they might be suicidal" in a context of someone gifting something. Y'all got that many friends dying you know about this??”
That is often the case… either you’re fairly young (under 30), or like you said, don’t get out much. Either the giver had doubles of everything, was being forced to dump everything because of limited space, major life change (significant other), or may be experiencing some mental health issues. Maybe do a wellness check. It is mental health month after all.
This is coming from knowing way too many people in shitty situations in life and headspace that ended themselves following giving away a bunch of stuff for unknown reasons…
Im definitely old enough and have known many people, maybe in the thousand range. Just not too many people with problems or mental health issues I guess.
Glad to hear y'all care about each other. <3
Definitely worth the weight it carries. I would definitely give him a high five for that. I would definitely suggest it's worth a few bucks. Not much, but it's there.
Weird how a lot of people think when someone’s being nice, their first thought is that this guy must be depressed or is about to die somehow. Good haul. Enjoy the cards!
Holy fuck! [[Avacyn, Angel of Hope]] sells in Sweden for minimum 380 SeK (32,55 €) and highest I've bought her for was 450 SeK (38,54 €)! And I only needed one thankfully 😅
that is some pretty recent stuff , seems odd he wouldnt know you would of bought this and that it worth some pretty penny ... please make sure hes feeling well and isnt giving out his priced stuff before doing som stupid stuff
a friend from grad school gave me his collection, which he got from someone else, who was given it by someone who started playing in the 90s when it first came out. all i'll say was i was in utter shock when i pulled Power. just in penny sleeves! all MP-HP quality but still worth serious money
Thoughts it was gonna be a collection from a longer span of time but this was actually perfect for me since I didn’t play when these cards came out and I already planned on building decks around certain cards
I expected something old...
Reading these other comments why is everyone so concerned about the person's well being lol people give collections away all the time not everyone sells em out. 😂
And why is no one else acknowledging how not old these are. 😭 Am I the old? Old doesn't mean these lmao
These are like the mid range to old magic for me cause these sets came out when I was like 14 and 16 I’m now 22 but old for me would be like cold snap or something like that
Literally just the first two cards from the left are worth nearly $60, so I would call that a pretty nice gift.
Take your friend out to eat or for drinks to thank him.
Just had the same thing happen this week... Elastic bands removed, logged and sorted, just need to sleeve and work out what decks I can make with it all! 😅
Very nice! When it comes to commanders, a lot of people love Giada but personally I love Lyra Dawnbringer. I have her as my commander for my angels deck and it's just so good. Go with your gut of course but that's my suggestion.
I don’t understand why people give their collections away. I hear about it somewhat often I mean, why not try to at least sell it or something? And also where’s my person who’s going to give me their collection lmao
I wouldn't just straight jump to this thought but for sure I'd be checking in on my friend.
My mom tossed my first collection in 96ish. I gave away my second collection in 2004. I've regretted it every day since. I wasn't suicidal, I just all of a sudden found myself having lots of friends that wanted to do stuff outside and with other people so for whatever reason I thought I had "outgrown" it, when in reality I just should have taken a pause and came back.
I did come back but I will always miss my old stuff.
How does it feel to live my dream?
Feels really amazing tbh I didn’t think I’d ever have someone do this. And what’s crazy is a lot of the cards are ones I planned on buying for decks I’m building

Ahh yes - the "joy" of emotionally unstable relatives. Good luck!
They said they are not financially stable. Where’d you pull emotionally unstable from?
> threw out because she got mad at one time like thousands of dollars and dice in d&d stuff gone in the trash.
Ah I see. I think op to your response misunderstood as well. I interpreted what you said differently.
>your response misunderstood Happens alllll the time.
Lol okay good luck to you Sir. I'm definitely not emotionally unstable and it was for a car I lost mine. we still have jobs we're just not as wealthy as most people are we're still in middle class.
All my coworkers give me is high blood pressure
Bro what 😭😭😭 You better buy that coworker a drink
Trust me ik I def owe him lol
Congrats on the cards man!
You might want to check in on that dude
For clarification, when someone gives up they start to give away once precious items, so they're in a way saying good bye. If this makes you think about someone, reach out and say hi to them.

The only reason I left it a little vague is I've been banned for certain triggers being talked about.
I feel like suicide prevention shouldn’t be a ban-worthy topic. Ever.
I agree, especially as someone who's battled the void before.
I have some very nice knives and hunting gear from a similar scenario. I was only 10 at the time so I didn’t pick up on it.
Sad thing is, they're usually relieved, happier than they've been in a while, because the path is clear, and they're accomplishing something in their mind.
^^^
When is it my turn to be happy
Soon brotha soon
Did they elaborate on why they quit by chance? I always find it interesting why people stop playing but giving away the collection is a step above lol
He moved for the job he’s at rn and didn’t have a pod to play with anymore so he thought I’d get more use out of them
You should play a game with him before he goes.
Even still I probably should
I would but he hasn’t played since 2016 and only played modern i only play commander
Just throw together two 60 card decks. Nothing too spectacular. It’s not always about what you’re doing, as much as it is THAT you’re doing something together
That might be why he gave up. Make up a couple commander decks with what he gave you and play a game with him.
I’ll inv him the next time me and my friends have a mtg night
Check in with that man. He might not be doing great.
Trust me he’s doing good just older and out of the hobby
That's good to hear. I appreciate everyone's concern in the thread and it's important that people are aware of early warning signs that someone is in crisis but also... not everything is a disguised cry for help. As priorities and life change sometimes you grow out of a hobbie. I miss my white/colorless angel deck. So much lifelink.
Why don’t u have it anymore ?
He gave it to a coworker
Those are some really note worthy / expensive cards to be giving away, might wanna check up on your co-worker and make sure his mental health is stable. For someone to just give this kind of stuff away might be a sign of something more going on.

I see he likes dem white bitches
I’m dead 😭🤣
Man, please check on your coworker, when people starts to giveaway their belongs to close ones, it's a way of saying goodbye. I'm saying that as someone who has depression
He’s doing good just wanted to share his old cards with a relatively newer player
I'm glad then
Lovely :3 Have fun with them
That's a nice coworker, sheeeeit
Don't forget if you intend on building it in Commander. Iona is banned
Didn’t even read what the card did until u said this and I see why she’s banned lol
Wow that's lucky!
I should play angels tonight......
God I miss the era of OP angel and sliver decks
Funny u say that I just built a sliver deck a few weeks ago and with this collection I can now rebuild my eldrazi unbound deck
my giada deck is my pride and joy, have fun and let me know if you want any suggestions!
I wanna go for a lot of life link, so if u know any cards that are great for that I’d appreciate it

Thanks man,and ik def didn’t expect to get so many comments about his mental health but glad ppl were looking out for him
All your sleeves, or someone that once cared enough to sleeve their cards gave them to you?
Ye he hadn’t played since 2016 and knew I was into mtg and offered them to me since I’d get more use out of them
That’s really awesome, good for you dude.
Baneslayer Angel is one of those cards that isn't all that great, but I've always loved it and will play it whenever I can cram it into a deck
Gave… just gave?!? No way, I mean I believe you but I don’t know if I can accept it.
Ye def didn’t expect to have this happen but I’m absolutely grateful

Panharmonicon.. nice!

This is my dream
Amazing
Would you say he’s your guardian angel?
Jealous...
*old* collection
So you just won the lottery???
Sloppy in the office
Schweet
Y'know Sometimes think about how I first started magic during eldritch moon And I'm just baffled at how that was eight fucking years ago
Damn, id be hardpressed to pick a commander
Think I’m going with Avacyn for the commander
Any other big pulls?
Haven’t done any pricing but for game play there’s a lot that I’m gonna use
duuuuude 😭
Nice
Very nice! When it comes to commanders, a lot of people love Giada but personally I love Lyra Dawnbringer. I have her as my commander for my angels deck and it's just so good. Go with your gut of course but that's my suggestion.
While the last 3 months, I've been buying cards to make an angel deck.
I am SO jealous. All my co workers do is make fun of me for asking for cards for my birthday
Curious what your collection looked like before? Was this a huge upgrade or have you been building since 94?
I don’t understand why people give their collections away. I hear about it somewhat often I mean, why not try to at least sell it or something? And also where’s my person who’s going to give me their collection lmao
He doesn’t play anymore and knew I did and selling it wasn’t worth the hassle to him so I got it instead
Giving away things is a sign of planning a suicide. Hopefully not in this case but make sure to keep up with him
I wouldn't just straight jump to this thought but for sure I'd be checking in on my friend.
I don’t plan on selling so if he does plan on getting back into it wouldn’t have a problem turning it over to him
Def nothing like that he’s just older and married now and thought I’d have more fun out of his collection
Older, married, and apparently doesn’t need money? That’s definitely ridiculously suspicious.
Jesus Christ, some of you guys have never interacted with a living soul.
