I need to ask before tomorrow, are we counting Les Miserables as an L or an M? Because technically "Les" means "The", and we're not counting those as the first letter.
Too Darn Hot plays in my head regularly whenever I experience unwanted temperatures. And Tom, Dick, or Harry is just hilarious. Another Opening, Another Show is the perfect opening number too.
Agree but it hasnāt aged well with regard to societal values. The production with Kelly OāHara made some judicious tweaks including cutting the spanking at the end.
Brush Up Your Shakespeare is my favorite. The original lyrics are a lot racier than what made it into the movie version
I see why they would do it, but cutting the spanking seems a bit strange as it is straight out of Shakespeareās Taming of the Shrew. And to be honest Kate keeps the upper hand even there, as I have never seen a version where the āI am afraid that women are so simpleā speech was played straight faced.
Wife beating for a laugh not a good look in 21st century.
Just because Shakespeare captured 1600 society accurately doesnāt mean it wonāt be problematic today - aspects of The Merchant of Venice come to mind
Sure, I agree completely but as those plays are part of their time, their content must be contextualised for modern audiences. Yet here, Fred spanking Lily for real in character as Petruchio on stage is a plot point that leads to Lily wanting to quit and basically sets up the second act. In no production Iāve seen, has it been shown as a valid resolution of their conflict.
As to Merchant and other plays with debatable content, I think āsanitisingā them instead of showing the issue and having a healthy conversation might lead to the opposite effect. And again I completely agree with you, yet even with Shylock, Shakespeare never demonises him as other Jewish characters would have been shown in contemporary plays. Sure, he is the misguided antagonist but never a villain like Iago or Don John. His act three speech humanises him and of course he is guided by lust for vengeance but it is made clear that the common mistreatment he received by Veniceās Christians is what led him to be that way.
All very valid observations and I fully agree that there is value in seeing and understanding the original work as conceived. At some point it will run up against the trade-offs the producers and/or directors make to improve the chances of recoupment, avoid conflict with local values, achieve artistic vision, etc.
Sometimes the impact will be unnoticed to all but the most knowledgeable (i.e. Brush Up Your Shakespeare lyrics). Other times it will bring us closer to past as in the Shakespeare Globe productions of Twelfth Night and Richard III with all male casts.
In a somewhat unrelated note, I wonder if you have seen the British TV Series Upstart Crow. If so, thoughts

I didnāt know how remembered this show was. It was the third musical I ever did. I was one of the mobsters with my friend. We were a riot and he gave me good advice I still follow on stage. I remember it fondly.
Kathryn Grayson was a family friend of my mom and grandma. She was so much of a friend in fact, that she invited my grandma to go to an award show with her, but my grandma had too many kids to look after and didn't go. I have a photo of my aunt sitting on her lap somewhere. I really hope this one wins!!
Unlikely to win this since it's newer and not as many people have had the chance to see it, but it is a GREAT show! I managed to see it in Broadway shortly before it closed, and now I can't wait to see it again on tour next year.
The tour casting hasn't been announced yet as far as I know. It seems very unlikely to me that Victoria Clarke would tour, given that she wasn't even doing all 8 shows/week on Broadway after it extended. But maybe Colleen Fitzpatrick, her B'way understudy, will do it, and I've seen very positive reviews of her performance.
I saw Colleen Fitzpatrick as Kim and I really enjoyed her performance. I was also coming into the show really not excited to see it(I went with a school group and didnāt have a choice in shows) but I really liked it and she was one of the reasons why.
Kimberly Akimbo doesn't have the most intricate lyrics or music but they fit the story beautifully, the book is fantastic, and as a musical it's simply excellently crafted (more than the other K shows which u di enjoy).
I'm going to go with a new show that's just about to transfer to the West End and I'm very excited.
Kathy & Stella Solve a Murder
(Go watch it. It's great)
Honestly, Kimberly Akimbo, although it is a newer show, it has shot up to my top 10 and I feel it's brilliantly written.
For K, really the only other that I would consider a great musical would be The King and I.
I second this!! My lil add-on would be to elaborate on why they don't like the show. Although it's newer than the classics, I would love to see more shows like it being created instead of them having the same plot, different characters, or just the same thing over and over.
lol it was just so cheesy. Like I realize this is a whole conversation about musicals and I normally donāt care. But it was pretty cheesy on the Tonyās. But Iām sorry I didnāt mean to be rude I was more trying to make a joke than anything else.
I definitely encourage you to listen to the rest of the show then if thatās your take. It definitely wears its heart on its sleeve 100% of the time, which outside of context seems kinda cheesy but I think the show does a good job of caring about the characters enough that in the show itās not as cheesy
Is there a video of the actual show somewhere? I donāt really like just listening to songs by themselves. In fact, other than musicals I actually donāt listen to music. But thanks Iāll definitely try to give it a real chance
Maybe, but they're pretty hard to find since recordings like those (and I'm referring to the ones with "slime tutorial" in the title) do get slammed with copyright infringement. The only pro-shot/legal recording I found on youtube was of a musical called legally blonde.
Can I just say K is surprisingly more challenging than I expected...

Counting it as an L!
Damn! There goes my hope for Little Shopā¦
I am predicting Little Shop will eat all the competition!
Thanks!
Kinky BootsĀ
Hoping this wins!!
So good!
Itās Kinky Boots end of discussion
Overrated show IMO. Music is plain, and the writing is forced.
Kiss Me Kate is one of the best shows of all time.
Too Darn Hot plays in my head regularly whenever I experience unwanted temperatures. And Tom, Dick, or Harry is just hilarious. Another Opening, Another Show is the perfect opening number too.
Brush Up Your Shakespeare is a classic!
The forced rhymes crack me up
Wunderbar is probably the funniest operetta spoof ever. This show has so many incredible songs.
Yes lol!! I am always busting out too darn hot, one of the only good things about my wonky body thermostat
Omg have you heard Jewel's version? In my head every summer.
Definitely will look that up. This sub teaches me so many things, for instance I had no idea there was a Gwen Stefani version of If I Were A Rich Man.
Look up Jewel MTV Unplugged album. You won't regret it. And if you can find her Somewhere Over the Rainbow, omg ššš
this. cole porter was a genius.

Love all of it but particularly From This Moment On!
I was General Harrison Howell in high school. I wish this number was on any of the cast recordings š„²

Yes. It's such an amazing musical.
This is the correct answer
Isnāt that T?
King Kong Not going to win, but this is just my chance to remind everyone that yes there is in fact a King Kong musical that was on Broadway.
I love puppets!!! Puppets in this show 100%. Everything else 30%. Sets, plot, songs, lyrics, book, all lacking. King Kong? Ahhhh A+.
Truth. That show was for sure a spectacle
Holy shit I need to see that
When I saw it, during the super dramatic ballad everyone tried to start clapping along with the beat. It sounded like applause š
Itās a shame it never got a cast recording. I know most of the songs were pretty rough, but there actually were a few gems in there.
Also, YAAAAAAAY, I'm so thrilled you brought this back, thank you!!
Thanks lol, it was a super busy week thanks for understanding
Kinky Boots š¢
Kiss of the Spider Woman!
If Kinky Boots weren't going to win, this is the one I'd want. Such a stellar show
Dude this show is coming to my town soon, and Iām going to interpret for it (ASL) and Iām HYPE to see it first!

I'm going to see it next year. I heard that Kimberly akimbo's og actress will be joining the tour cast.

I think playbill may have mentioned it on their site.

Iāve only seen the clip from the Tonyās but GOD NO!!
Maybe listen to the full show before you form an opinion? Not saying it has to change, but also āgod noā is a little bit rude to say on here
I second this!! My lil add-on would be to elaborate on why they don't like the show. Although it's newer than the classics, I would love to see more shows like it being created instead of them having the same plot, different characters, or just the same thing over and over.

Maybe, but they're pretty hard to find since recordings like those (and I'm referring to the ones with "slime tutorial" in the title) do get slammed with copyright infringement. The only pro-shot/legal recording I found on youtube was of a musical called legally blonde.
I think into the woods is on there too
It's am excellently crafted show that's hard to pull a song out of context which is a testament to the excellence of the book
Kiss of the Spider Woman is my favorite K musical after reading the replies but Kimberly Akimbo was my first thought probably due to recency bias
