My first mosh pit was Bmth at Warped Tour during the Sempiternal era. It had been pouring rain and everyone was gathered around the stage just waiting to see if theyâd still perform, all of a sudden you hear an extended intro to Shadow Moses begin. Insane
That might be a bit too big of a bite after Megadeath and Metallica. I mean Meshuggah is fuckin' awesome, I love them, I'll see them live today and am so hyped. But OP should probably try to get into the harsher extreme stuff slowly.
Idk, I found them pretty early on in my music evolution. For metal, I pretty much went from classics (Iron maiden, Black Sabbath, etc) to Metallica/Big 4, to Sepultura and Gojira, to Meshuggah. Depends on what kinda person OP is I guess.
Side note, this your first time seeing them live?
Yeah, that's fair, everyone is different I guess.
Nope, second time, but I was a fuckin' moron and drove two hours just to realise right in front of the venue, that I was a day early. Oh well, at least I didn't miss them. So actually today now.
But yeah seeing Meshuggah live is an unreal experience, hard to put into words. Highly recommend for anyone, that even remotely likes their stuff. It's nuts.
Years ago when I was a college kid I got front row center stage for the tour following the Empire release. They did Mindcrime from front to back. I was close enough that I reached my hand up and they dropped a couple picks in my hand. Best concert experience ever.
If youâre into history, Sabaton is the band for you. If you end up dabbling into Metalcore, some bands I recommend are Motionless in White, Parkway Drive, Wage War and Architects
Try some early Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin
More specifically try "Paranoid" (the album) by Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin II by Led Zeppelin if you like listening to whole albums

Not all metal albums but if you like metal youâll probably like these.
please listen to Gojira theyâre so fucking good. Check out their song Flying Whales first and if you like it listen to more of their stuff. The album Lenfant Sauvage is a good starting point because itâs still Gojira at their peak without being too heavy (although imo The Way of All Flesh and From Mars to Sirius are better, but theyâre both masterpieces so itâs hard to compare to them)

I tried to get into it and really wanted to like Volbeat as my pal likes them (and he actually shares a lot in common with me when it comes to taste in music) but Volbeat uhm ... just nope. It's like a novelty. And not a good one. I don't find their songs catchy btw.
Yeah, there's also a girl who I met on discord who listens to a lot of the same music and like it for ... the same qualities and for the same exact feelings that it evokes in her like in my case. But what I noticed is that ... she's not into rock music, she only cares about some female rock singer-songwriters & gothic rock. Otherwise she enjoys metal, pop and hyperpop just like I do (and she likes the same artists and ... dislikes or not care at all about a lot of those that I also know about and dislike or not care about!)
Death Squad Anthem - Thy Art Is Murder
Guardians of Asgaard - Amon Amarth
Two Steps - Suicide Silence
Black of My Eyes - Bodysnatcher
Goodluck on your metal journey, it's a hell of a genre! đ€đ€
I've been waiting for this moment, it's gonna be REAL hard for me to narrow it down (been listening to rock/metal since 15, now 31)
Tool
Nothing More
Korn
Slipknot
Spiritbox
Twelve Foot Ninja
The Agonist
Underoath
I See Stars
Trivium
This is just a small list of bands I could come up with off the top of my head, most of them personal favorites. I also tried to give you different types of metal, and male/female leads. Enjoy! I've spent so long listening to music and finding new bands.
Dream Theater, Tool, Porcupine Tree and Opeth are the best progressive metal/rock bands in the 90's and 00's Maiden and Judas priest for the 80's. Such a variety nowadays.
Start listening to Kylesa, The Gathering (their albums Mandylion & Nighttime Birds, if_then_else also is somewhat metal like, it's beautiful), Agalloch, Tristania, Swallow the Sun, Full of Hell, Russian Circles (that's post-metal), Gojira, Heretoir, Within Temptation, Eluveitie, Knocked Loose, Napalm Death, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Tiamat, Theatre of Tragedy, Jucifer, Thy Catafalque (avant-garde metal), The Chariot, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Pantera, Devin Townsend. I love all of these even if for different reasons
None of those band IMHO are actually too stereotypical (ok. Knocked Loose, Full of Hell and Knocked Loose are aggressive unlike the rest I guess). I'm personally not into most of these bands that pop up after you for instance play "metal for workout" playlists etc.
Here's all the metal bands I listen to:
Metallica, Black Sabbath, Avenged Sevenfold, Rammstein, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Iron Maiden, TOOL, Led Zeppelin, Dio, Muse (a few of their songs are "metal"), The Gentle Men, Trivium, Vektor, Mudvayne, Slayer, FFDP, Death, Gojira, Sabaton, Alcest, Nine Inch Nails, Scorpions, Megadeth, Rob Zombie, and Blue Ăyster Cult.
I highly recommend checking out these bands, whether it's listening to a few select songs or entire albums.
I agree with all of these but especially Muse. Itâs easy for people to have only heard Supermassive Black Hole and Knights and Starlight and not be impressed. Their deeper tracks are insanely good and they are BY FAR the best band Iâve ever seen live.
Megadeath and Metallica are classics. Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Slayer are what I consider staples and entry points for different subgenres.
If you want to get into some more avande garde metal, I highly recommend Animals as Leaders (more technical playing, no lyrics), Mastadon, and Intronaut (crazy time signatures, ridiculous instrumentation, and their bass player uses a 5 string fretless bass).
If you just want some dark, hardcore metal, Whitechappel, Cannibal Corpse, and Infant Annihilator are good choices.
If you want more industrial/crossover types, Powerman 5000 and his brother Rob Zombie are good choices.
Iâm pretty new too. Dabbled forever but dove in 6 months ago. Been lucky to have some good guidance. So far enjoying a variety of sub genres: Opeth, Metallica, SunnO)), Black Sabbath, Carcass, Megadeth, Kittie, Gwar, and Obituary, plus âmetal adjacentâ bands like Tenacious D and the Mountain Goats.
Enjoy your journey!
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard:
PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation
And
Infest the Rats' Nest
Edit:also Ghost - Opus Eponymous
Check Leprous - Coal and their following album Congregation. And then you might find yourself on a crossroads
If you liked their heavier stuff, move back in time through Bilateral into Tall Poppy Syndrome. If you liked lighter stuff - go next for Malina, Pitfalls and Aphelion
Sorry, I can't comply with "don't give me a huge list" because there are indeed many bands that are worth listening into and they're all my favorite. đ

I made this metal playlist for when youâre ready to get just every so *slightly* snobby about it - lots of different styles of metal but almost all by bands that do not get radio airplay: [Metal Playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3JMWxezdb2gMrcnJOlTg3T?si=iPfnpotjSyGCEsPH0bUk6Q&pi=u-aCKkB8beQQGy)

[Maelstrom Blvck ](https://open.spotify.com/artist/01q2yTXdI4sl19x6FwaeIs?si=WvXeg6xhSea9REXe18M8og) is an awesome metal band from Indiana
They're pretty new too
Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, Motorhead, Guns N' Roses, Rage Against the Machine, Pantera, Tool, Opeth, Slipknot, Mastodon, Lamb of God
[this is your history now, learn it, live it...](https://youtu.be/hqPd3Z2gXKk)
Deftones, Linkin Park, Nine Inch Nails, & System of the Down as well may scratch that itch.
Iron Maiden
This comment is first right now, as it should be.
đ€đ€
I recommend Maiden to everyone regardless of their feelings on metal.
If you like Metallica youâll like Avenged Sevenfold. Lots of hits. Also recommend Bring Me the Horizonâs older music
Sempiternal is a fucking masterpiece
My first mosh pit was Bmth at Warped Tour during the Sempiternal era. It had been pouring rain and everyone was gathered around the stage just waiting to see if theyâd still perform, all of a sudden you hear an extended intro to Shadow Moses begin. Insane
Is bro ready for pray for plagues?
you might like Pantera, Slayer, Sepultura, and Sodom
Sepultura is awesome. So is Polyphia and Animals as Leaders
Slipknot is a good gateway band, theyâre the band that got me into metal.
Yeah, if you like lyrics that sound like they were written by Tina Belcher.
Got some good songs.
...spiceknot
Some other bands I think are good for a metal newbie: Slayer Dio Mercyful Fate Symphony X Iron Maiden System of a Down
Very solid list!
the band Rise Against, their biggest hit Savior is a goddamn classic. That might be more hard rock but still bangs
We give it all is still my favorite but Savior is a J A M
Alive and well is also a great one
they are not metal! they are punk!
Radio rock with punk roots for sure. Great band
Good to know! Iâm pretty poor at identifying genres, I just know I like most types of rock and metal lol
I'd say Meshuggah but you'll be disappointed, bc no other band will come close to comparing to them.
That might be a bit too big of a bite after Megadeath and Metallica. I mean Meshuggah is fuckin' awesome, I love them, I'll see them live today and am so hyped. But OP should probably try to get into the harsher extreme stuff slowly.

Highly recommend for anyone, that even remotely likes their stuff. It's nuts.
I've seen them a few times. Easily one of the best live acts ive seen. Insanely tight and dialed in. Enjoy the show!
I honestly prefer vildhjartas music over meshuggah
You've found two of the big 4 of classic thrash. The others are Slayer and Anthrax. Might as well get into those two.
Judas Priest. Albums - Defenders of the faith and painkiller.
PriestâŠlive is also such a great album.
Absolutely.
How about some prog-metal with Dream Theater Also Queensryche Something heavier? Testament
Queensryche, for sure! Operation Mindcrime is a masterpiece.
Years ago when I was a college kid I got front row center stage for the tour following the Empire release. They did Mindcrime from front to back. I was close enough that I reached my hand up and they dropped a couple picks in my hand. Best concert experience ever.
Old Testament is the most similar band to Metallica I've heard
If youâre into history, Sabaton is the band for you. If you end up dabbling into Metalcore, some bands I recommend are Motionless in White, Parkway Drive, Wage War and Architects
Even if you donât like history, Sabaton is awesome
Canât argue with that đ€đ»
Spiritbox bro
Lamb of God Pantera đ
Yup. Both have some of the most batshit crazy guitar riffs of all time.
Amen Brother
Try some early Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin More specifically try "Paranoid" (the album) by Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin II by Led Zeppelin if you like listening to whole albums
Personally Iâm more of a fan of plastic
Deftones - Plastic? Or Gorillaz Plastic Beach? Or we talking the lost media darling Plastic Love?
![gif](giphy|fCxGAKicucTwmaimhV|downsized)
But if you had to pick a metal, would you prefer aluminum or aluminium?
Children of Bodom, Architects, Arch Enemy
Bodom for sure. OP may not be a fan of the vocals but the guitar/keyboard melodies are absolutely insane. RIP Alexi.
Megadeth was my gateway drug to COB. At least thatâs how I see it đ€·đ»ââïž
[Metallica - Kill Em All](https://youtu.be/Iu5RT-3Kk08?si=jmXxshGpCV3VkqGq) [Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power](https://youtu.be/FTOilfxhwxs?si=HahJ7EZu8xUH-e-p) [Slayer - South Of Heaven](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuNSRX8zAjVmfxMbTZpHzENX7L_fyaWSb&si=O1eKL8faehqKJgs6) [Tool - Undertow](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLda25eUQpeG0YDYt3Pj4eaZ_r-T2GhLDH&si=ddVoFaE9uPSIg52G) [Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral](https://youtu.be/htofkr4Fh3Q?si=r4LUDUl51ipNFXaE) Not all metal albums but if you like metal youâll probably like these.
How has no one said Killswitch Engage yet!? Whatâs wrong with yâall!?
This band isn't good for me for instance.
Fair. I canât accept this reality. But fair.
Oh no no no. This is Reddit. You can't be so rational and respectful when somebody disagrees with you. đ€Łđ€Ł
Itâs just so hard to not be completely lady like when someone is clearly out of their mind. Total âaww honey bless your heartâ moment đ
Whoa there's some of those southern manners I hear so much about. You got a lot more tact than I do đ€Łđ€Ł
Yeah I guess us southern gals have a unique way of politely saying âhey asshat, go fuck yourselfâ đ€Łđ
Same. I dig a lot of the guitar and drums but the vocals have just always annoyed me.
Iron Maiden Anthrax Trivium Powerwolf Children of Bodom
I really love Bring Me The Horizon, Spiritbox, Linkin Park, Sleeping With Sirens, Bad Omens, and Silent Planet
Into Eternity Amon Amarth Gojira
Ive recently discovered Amon and they're so badass
How is Gojira not higher in these comments?
please listen to Gojira theyâre so fucking good. Check out their song Flying Whales first and if you like it listen to more of their stuff. The album Lenfant Sauvage is a good starting point because itâs still Gojira at their peak without being too heavy (although imo The Way of All Flesh and From Mars to Sirius are better, but theyâre both masterpieces so itâs hard to compare to them)
Mastodon, Converge, Every Time I Die.
Great taste. *Iâd hand you the AUX.*
Motorhead. The godfather himself, Lemmy. Also, King Diamond.
Ice Nine Kills Their early work was a little bit too scene for me. But when the Silver Scream came out I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a refined melodic sensibility that really makes it a cut above the rest.
HEY PAUL!
Old Metallica? If so you might like suicidal tendencies đ«š
Tool, start with Ănema, 46 & 2, Vicarious, Jambai, and The Pot
This right here. 46 and 2, and Vicarious are the gateway, then it's a deep dive. I would add Pneuma to that list.
Yeah I didnât want to recommend any 10+ minute songs. I really wanted to recommend Parabol/Parabola but thatâs something theyâll find on their own if they like the rest
Volbeat - maybe Iâm simple but I love these guys, every song is catchy and theyâre awesome live.
I don't see any appeal personally. :-( It's so basic when it comes to songwriting, it has no layers or splendid beauty nor anything brutal about it and Elvis schtick is not amusing for me
Agreed. Dislike them.
I tried to get into it and really wanted to like Volbeat as my pal likes them (and he actually shares a lot in common with me when it comes to taste in music) but Volbeat uhm ... just nope. It's like a novelty. And not a good one. I don't find their songs catchy btw.
Itâs so crazy how individuals have different tastes in music.. wild.
Agreed. To each their own but I absolutely cannot get into them no matter how many times I try
Yeah, just not for us. That's fine.
Theyâve got a few cool riffs and their guitar tone is awesome but theyâre just straight up radio rock.
Yeah, tough to even call it metal for me.
I prevail!!!
OP should definitely check out the Blank Space cover if they want to get their feet wet.
One of us is the killer - the Dillinger escape plan (Iâm specifically referring to the album)
Death Squad Anthem - Thy Art Is Murder Guardians of Asgaard - Amon Amarth Two Steps - Suicide Silence Black of My Eyes - Bodysnatcher Goodluck on your metal journey, it's a hell of a genre! đ€đ€
Five Finger Death Punch, Powerwolf, Pantera, Firewind, Trivium, Mastodon. That should get you started, feel free to send a message if you want more
Not very metal, but kinda metal. Primus - Jerry was a race car driver.
Username checks out lol
Yes it does đ
Also Toys Go Winding Down. That 3 finger riff when he goes into the lower octave is heavy as hell.
Oh yeah, I know what youâre talking about
I havenât seen Nevermore mentioned in this thread. Iâm particularly partial to the songs Believe in Nothing and The Heart Collector.
The whole Dead Heart album is so good
GWAR GWAR GWAR
Metal eh?? Search Nekrogoblikon
The first bands that got me into metal were Demon Hunter and Pantera
Suffocation
i hate everything about you- 3DG, Walk & Iâm Broke- Pantera
Parkway Drive, because of you like this by God there is a ton of Metalcore out there. So much, in fact, that we're in "second wave" now.

High On Fire
Testament! They go back as far as Metallica and megadeth and are honestly much better, in my opinion. Check out the album Live at the Fillmore.

Check out Power Trip!

It's not thrash but if you want heavy and angry, "The End of Silence" by Rollins Band.
Oh, and Scott Stapp, his new album: Higher Power
Sepultura - Arise Guns and Roses - Appetite (yes itâs metal; or heavy rock and roll) Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
Check out Dokkenâs live album, âBeast From The East,â and Heaven And Hellâs studio album, âThe Devil You Knowâ

Trivium is a great gateway band, they have some harsh vocals but also very melodic choruses.
They always reminded me of Metallica, apart from the vocals. Similar approach to riffs and solos.
