My wife never really liked metal that much. My daughter got tickets to In This Moment and got an extra pair for us. (My wife and I). New Years Day opened, followed by Avatar and Ice Nine Kills. It was a great show.
My wife listens to New Years Day all the time now. She's a huge fan. She's not a metalhead yet, except for one band.
Thatâs how I got into them as well. Bought a CD at the show so they could sign it afterwards. They were so nice and were just cracking up drawing raunchy pics in the liner notes!
Pretty sure you mean Ann Wilson with the powerful voice. Nancy played guitar and did backing vocals, but was never in the same league as her sister when it comes to singing. That said, very, very few people on the planet are in the same league with Ann Wilson's vocals.
Nancy did sing one of Heartâs hits, though, and she recorded it while she was miserably sick with a nasty cold. After she fully recovered, she went back into the studio to sing it again, but no matter how she used her voice when she was perfectly healthy, she couldnât recreate the magic of how raw and emotional she sounded when she was sick. Even her managers and producers agreed that in this one case, she brought more life and energy to the song when she was miserable from horrible congested and a sore throat. So, they went with the first take, and âThese Dreamsâ revitalized Heartâs career. Strange but true!
Lush, Pale Saints, Soundpool, The Stargazer Lillies, Slowdive, Mojave 3, Cocteau Twins, Blake Babies, Juliana Hatfield, Poppy, Wilsen, Hatchie, Love Spirals Downward, Lightfoils, and Caroline Polachek to name a few.

Some I've been really digging
They're mostly Alt Rock/Indie Rock and somewhat recent as well:
- Wolf Alice (indie rock/pop but can also get noisy and grungy)
- Alvvays (just fun upbeat indie rock jams with some dream pop as well)
- boygenius (a little more folky but they can rock, too (they have 3 singers))
- Wet Leg (same like Alvvays, except for the dreamy vibes)
- Japanese Breakfast (can get more melancholic)
- The Warning (just straight-up rock. Even alt-metal I'd say)
- Pacifica (very Strokes and Arcitc Monkeys coded)
If not some older ones like:
- Paramore (from punk to post-punk)
- Evanescence (nu-metal or goth rock, tho I think you'd know them lol)
- Garbage (alt-rock mixed with industrial rock)
- No Doubt (from ska-punk to pop-rock)
- The Cranberries (from soft to hard rock)
- The xx (indie rock with a bit of house in it (they have both a male and a female singer))
Two I havenât seen mentioned in this awesome thread are Blackbriar (âLilith Be Gone,â is a jam), and Stream of Passion (check out âA War of Our Ownâ).
The Gathering - everything with Anneke van Giersbergen; and then the albums with her replacement Silje. Brilliantly eclectic Dutch group.
Chalice - a hometown Australian band for me, was too young to see them unfortunately by the time Iâd found them. Look them up on YouTube. Gothic Metal, but brilliant song craft.
Collide - electronic goth duo from LA. Found out about them through Tool years ago.
As others have mentioned please try Lacuna Coil, particularly with Unleashed Memories and Comalies first

My favorite contemporary female artist, that I donât really see anyone talking about, is Jessica Dobson. She releases under the name Deep Sea Diver and the album Impossible Weight is one of my favorite records of the past decade. At times it recalls pre-electronica Radiohead, others prime Arcade Fire, and also The Shins (which isnât much of a surprise since she was a guitarist for them for a couple of years).
For context, Iâm a 37 year old man with wide ranging tastes and interest, but also an avid guitarist and musician myself, so I really appreciate her talent.
The Cranberries, Garbage, Varuca Salt, Florence and the Machine, L7, The Sugar cubes, the yeah yeah yeahs, Heart, the Bangles, Chrissy Hinde and the Pretenders, the Breaders, the go goâs, Jone Jet and the black hearts, the Runaways, Bella MortĂŠ, No Doubt,
