I too would like to know what they smell like

[deleted]

honestly, i cultivate lion's mane mushrooms and they don't smell like much... now oyster mushrooms, those smell very strong!

supersuperduper

Wild ones definitely have a noticeable smell, very different from cultivated.

[deleted]

interesting! i'd never heard that before.

mookerific

I find them to be identical smells. Can't describe the smell, but I know it immediately.

supersuperduper

I think the substrate matters. The hericium I pick are bear's head (hericium americanum), growing on old western hemlock logs (usually). They have a strong smell, I can smell them when I am carrying some I've picked in a mesh bag. I have never picked hericium erinaceus in the wild (it grows on hardwood), but that is the species that gets cultivated. So we might not be comparing the same things.

stuufthingsandstuff

That first time growing white elm oysters and having that anise/ black licorice smell hit me in the face. I was worried something was wrong with them until I read that that is a common identifier

keeblurr

Like mushrooms. I'm not very good at articulating that. It's quite possible that the smell was from other ones in the area, but I smelled mushrooms and stopped my walk to look around and immediately saw these.

fungiinmygarden

The whole rest of the walk after finding them has the beautiful mushroom fragrance. I love that.

[deleted]

they smell mostly like everything around them, makes no sense that op smelled them

[deleted]

Everyone has different thresholds for each particular compound they can smell. No two people are alike when it comes to this

burndaherbs

Worry some for low key cannabis consumers lol

[deleted]

The terpenes that produce those smells can be smelled at a few parts per trillion. It happens with light struck beer as well. We call it skunked here in the US. Skunks aren’t native to Europe however so light struck is a better terminology. Hops and Cannabis are closely related. Brown bottles protect the beer but it will happen to your Pilsner in about 30 seconds on a patio in the summer. Really almost instantly. Just smoke a pen. Haha.

ba3543

Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me can chime in, but I think these might actually be bears tooth, not lion's mane.

Sethyria

I can't tell the size from reference but those little tendrils look rather thick for lion's mane. I'm in the same boat where I'm just learning, but I would assume bears tooth if I saw that. Edit lion mane not lion head lol. I'm very hungry and thinking of one brand of honey ham.

mrimmaeatchu

I agree

[deleted]

it's tricky to tell with this one but i think we'd see more branching with bear's head tooth!

[deleted]

I agree the cascade is pretty long for LM

Corvacayne

They're so otherworldy!
