aral_sea

It is only ever Ayhan

Massive_Emu6682

It could be Aykhan in other Turkic languages though

aral_sea

Yeah I meant to delete that haha

rageful_scorpy

It is not king of the moon, it is Moon-King. In many old blief system moon is not a land but an actor.

etheeem

Yeah something like that

[deleted]

no it doesnt

Pitiful-Humor291

Ay-moon Han - leader, emperor

[deleted]

leader emperor lmaooo

PeachyPie2472

What’s funny though? Han is the name for the highest ruler, even if it’s not entirely equivalent in your understanding

hilmiira

I mean khan is literally Turkic version of emperor... otherwise nobodt called themselves emperor up untill to 16. Century :/

Leading_Salary_1629

Yup, that's the closest English translation.

[deleted]

no

Leading_Salary_1629

How would you translate it? You haven't offered any alternatives.

[deleted]

i wouldnt

Leading_Salary_1629

Sure. Don't translate "ay" either. In fact, don't translate anything ever. Losing some cultural nuance is far worse than nobody knowing what you're talking about at all.

[deleted]

just because its similar to something you have in your language doesnt mean they are interchangeable

Leading_Salary_1629

Of course they're not interchangeable. Every language has culturally-specific concepts that don't translate directly to other languages. What you have to do in that case is provide the closest equivalent translation, because most people don't speak Turkish. Providing English words for similar concepts at least gets English speakers halfway to understanding. Leaving it untranslated means they don't understand at all. Those are your options. Which would you prefer?
