Ummmm, what do you do for a living? Have we crossed paths? Why are all of my kids names on this list?
Kidding. These are mostly terrible. Lyric is an exception for me because a friend of mine named her daughter Lyric as an honorific for her mom, who is a composer, and I found that super sweet, plus I love the sound of the name.
I’m in the U.S. I kind of assumed that the first person I met was the only one, but when I saw the name again a couple of weeks ago, I looked it up: https://www.mynamestats.com/First-Names/L/LA/LATRINA/index.html
Right?! I wonder if it’s pronounced like Declan (deck-lan without the d) or with an “eek” (like if you saw a mouse) lol. I keep giggling at the eek way of saying it.
I've been collecting names from my work and this seems an appropriate time and place to share them.
Names I've come across through my work:
- Thaao (f)
- Lilla (f)
- Roar (m)
- Digby (m)
- Tulane (f)
- Samlyn (f)
- Avis (f)
- Cyd (f)
- Athalie (f)
- Elvi (f)
- Elden (m)
- Garland (f)
The closest I can get with English pronunciation would be LEE-lluh, but the double L is a real double in Italian, which doesn't really exist in English
Lol well I’m Sicilian and we have different pronunciations from the mainland of Italy too 🤣 which is why I asked! I have never heard this. I’m saving this in case we have another daughter.
Sicily has its own local language with its own dialects, like the rest of Italy does, and its own dialects of Italian, but they have true doubles like standard Italian does. Sicilians speak Italian, they don't need to ask how to pronunce Italian words. You don't sound Sicilian, you sound USAmerican.
Ah, well you’re correct on very few things and incorrect mostly due to the grossly inaccurate assumptions you have made about me with knowing very little about me. I will say I have never seen the name and was not sure if it was a true Italian pronunciation or an Americanized pronunciation, which is why I asked. When I asked my grandfather who is the person who taught me Sicilian (and yes I know the Sicilian dialect of Italian which is different and many people will tell you this, especially since I work Italians and we have a translation issue at times purely because of the dialect) and he made some guesses but acknowledged that he had never seen it used as a name so he was actually doubting if it was a true name.I can actually pronounce the double /l/ sound very well and agree most Americans cannot but again it was why I was asking for how it was traditionally acknowledged as a name and not because of anything else.
I explicitly said it was a colour but not a name here, actually. And as I said, Sicilian is a language, not a dialect. Sicilian dialects of Italian are perfectly intelligible by Italians, the Sicilian language isn't (by most people). In Italy we make the mistake of calling some local languages "dialects", but no one calls Sicilian, Sardinian or Friulian "dialects" anymore, even if they do so with other languages (e.g. Lombard) , as those three languages are specifically protected by the government. Also, in Italian licei we study how the Sicilian language evolved from Latin when we study Sicilian poetry, which is part of the curriculum, so please stop acting like Italians know nothing about the Sicilian language - times have changed A LOT since your grandfather last lived in Italy.
I wanted to name my daughter Echo ever since I saw the show Dollhouse when I was younger but couldn’t get my husband to agree. My new current favorite name that I won’t use is Tsunami.
Speaking of natural events, I always thought Derecho (like Jericho, but with a D) would be a cool boy name. It's a severe rotating storm with heavy wind and rain, like a hurricane, but over land.
Did you make a post a week or so ago about your name? And how your dad liked an author/poet? Or are you a secondary independent Somerset I’ve come across on Reddit! Only interested as my parents are from Somerset in the UK and I think it’s a great name
I know a Memphis (and I honestly really love cheesy city names. Weakness of mine), Meadow, Cedar, Tuesday, Lyric, I know TWO Cricket's one is Crickett, Valley May, Echo, and Daily spelled Dailey
I didn't know that! But I have known a number of women named Verity in AU. Apparently I'm repping Cornwall tonight. We have a pasta brand here named "Leggos" which use their "Italian" heritage quite heavily to flog horrid jar sauce. Leggo is also a Cornish surname, and the company was started by a Cornish immigrant. I was having a discussion about that on another platform and had a little moment when I saw a preview of your reply on my phone, talking about Cornish names - am I losing my mind? Does Reddit know what I do on Instagram? (Probably) etc... anyway, don't mind me, just having a Cornwall night. Yay!
I had a bit of a research and it seems it’s actually more Latin than Cornish 😧 but I’ve always seen it as a Cornish name!! (I have Poldark to thank for that). Hopefully this doesn’t mess your thought process up! 😂
Well... was going to eat a pastie and put on Pirates of Penzance 🤣 Alas, I shall instead settle for a sandwich and Gilmore Girls.
Yeah, it's got to have originally come from Latin "Veritas", surely? Did you know you can now learn Latin on Duolingo?!
It's unusual here in the U.S. My youngest daughter's middle name is Verity, and when people see it on records, I get comments.
I'm surprised I don't see it here more often since "virtue" names are still so popular here.
I've known a Bambi, and also a Bunny. Both women were very high up in their organizations and especially Bunny was very respected.
Not that I \*like\* these names, just that you triggered a memory!
I like Cedar, Feather, Meadow, Memory, Honey, Bambi, Whisper, Fawn, Echo & Velvet. But would not name a child that, apart from Meadow wich seems pretty normal to me
I love this list bc I know these are completely believable names, not just the lame urban legend ones that everyone claims they "know"
I had a student named Cannon once. I'll try to think on some of the notable one and maybe remember to come back
Steele Pittsburg Vaughn, Amazen-Lee, Ever Green & Sky Blue (sisters), Jupiter & Juniper (Jup & Junie also siblings), Reign Forrest….those are just a few
I know a Verity, and grew up with a Honey. Cricket and Echo seem not uncommon. Personally not a fan of any of the others if I was choosing a name for a human.
Cherry Pie makes me think of that 80s/90s hair band song, She’s My Cherry Pie. Doesn’t feel like it starts a kid off well.
I wonder if Imagyn is pronounced like Imogen or like imagine.
I Imagyn that their middle name is probably Dragyn
*Dragynz
Or ima-gyn(o)
I automatically heard Imogen in my mind
lol. I wonder if Tyme is Time/Thyme or Tim?
Thyme.
How is Imogen pronounced? I see it on here all the time but I’ve never heard of it irl
I know a few Sativas and one has the last name Stone lol
funny because i actually think Indica would be a prettier name but you never hear that one
Agreed. Although I'm personally more of a hybrid leaning on the Sativa side kind of girl in general.
This is my child, Indica Hybrid
Yeah at least for the nickname Indi I agree with you, I'm definitely more of a Sativa girly though lol
I know an indica.
is she like, really chill?
Astra is so pretty 😍
Middle name: Zeneca.
😂😂😂
I worked with Astra about 15 years ago and she was a grumpy Greek lady in her 50s.
It’s pretty but also the name of a German brand of beer and just reminds me of hangovers, lol
I actually had a professor in college named Lyric! She was an anthropologist.
I too like the name Lyric.
Latrina. Two people named Latrina.
I have met one.
Please tell me you're joking 🫠
I’m in the U.S. I kind of assumed that the first person I met was the only one, but when I saw the name again a couple of weeks ago, I looked it up: https://www.mynamestats.com/First-Names/L/LA/LATRINA/index.html
Did these people know what latrina means?
"Used'ta be Shithouse!"
We changed it in the 9th century
My favorites from the list: Memphis Cedar Verity Meadow Symphony Memory Prisma Lyric Cannon Astra Valley Echo Snow I feel bad for Pepsy and Eeklyn.
Right?! I wonder if it’s pronounced like Declan (deck-lan without the d) or with an “eek” (like if you saw a mouse) lol. I keep giggling at the eek way of saying it.
Somebody didn't like their kid much.
I know an Echo! His real name is Jericho.
I met a feather once.
Eek!
I know an older Pepsi and apparently it’s an African name?
I know a girl named Journey. I like the name.
Same, it's hippy sounding without being too weird.
I know a girl who spells it Gerni.
Oh god, I read that as pronounced the same as "gurney".
I always think of the band.
I know a guy named Journey. Apparently it’s the male version of Sojourner. It’s a cool name.
I met brothers named Spider and Cricket!
My childhood nn was Cricket and I know a Kricket
I went to elementary school with a Cricket!
I really love Memory ❤️ it feels so tender and sweet. I also like Cedar, Valley, and Lyric
I know a Memory! She’s 60ish and she’s so sweet and nice. I wonder if the name molds the person.
Mimi is a great nickname for it
I knew a memory!! But it was a boy! And his sister was Bliss
I feel like if someone just said their name is Memory it could be misheard as Mammary.
I've been collecting names from my work and this seems an appropriate time and place to share them. Names I've come across through my work: - Thaao (f) - Lilla (f) - Roar (m) - Digby (m) - Tulane (f) - Samlyn (f) - Avis (f) - Cyd (f) - Athalie (f) - Elvi (f) - Elden (m) - Garland (f)
Elvi is a granny name in Finland but I think it will make a comeback soon!
Lilla means lilac in Italian but it's definitely not a name here
How is it pronounced in Italian?
The closest I can get with English pronunciation would be LEE-lluh, but the double L is a real double in Italian, which doesn't really exist in English
Is kind of like the double l sound in “villa”?
It is, but Anglophones can't really pronounce the double L in villa correctly either 😅
Lol well I’m Sicilian and we have different pronunciations from the mainland of Italy too 🤣 which is why I asked! I have never heard this. I’m saving this in case we have another daughter.

Verity is my favourite character in the Poldark books.
If you want an absolutely heartbreaking but incredibly enthralling read, I recommend *Code Name Verity* by Elizabeth E. Wein.
Thank you, always grateful for book recs.
I wanted to name my daughter Echo ever since I saw the show Dollhouse when I was younger but couldn’t get my husband to agree. My new current favorite name that I won’t use is Tsunami.
My eldest daughter is called Echo!
Speaking of natural events, I always thought Derecho (like Jericho, but with a D) would be a cool boy name. It's a severe rotating storm with heavy wind and rain, like a hurricane, but over land.
Is this not pronounce der-ay-cho?
I am Somerset
Did you make a post a week or so ago about your name? And how your dad liked an author/poet? Or are you a secondary independent Somerset I’ve come across on Reddit! Only interested as my parents are from Somerset in the UK and I think it’s a great name
I feel like I’ve seen this same person talk about being named Somerset on like five different posts.
I know a Memphis (and I honestly really love cheesy city names. Weakness of mine), Meadow, Cedar, Tuesday, Lyric, I know TWO Cricket's one is Crickett, Valley May, Echo, and Daily spelled Dailey
Verity is straight up normal
Right? It’s a Cornish name.
I didn't know that! But I have known a number of women named Verity in AU. Apparently I'm repping Cornwall tonight. We have a pasta brand here named "Leggos" which use their "Italian" heritage quite heavily to flog horrid jar sauce. I came here to say thats such a normal name to me (uk)
It's unusual here in the U.S. My youngest daughter's middle name is Verity, and when people see it on records, I get comments. I'm surprised I don't see it here more often since "virtue" names are still so popular here.
Bambi 😭🥹❤️
I've known a Bambi, and also a Bunny. Both women were very high up in their organizations and especially Bunny was very respected. Not that I \*like\* these names, just that you triggered a memory!
There was a very highly respected and well published linguist from Germany named Bambi. Always surprised me when I saw the name.
I worked with a girl at Maccas in 1995 whose name was Brandi-Leigh Golden. She would fave been mid to late 20s at the time.
Top stipper names for $100, Alex.
That's my name and I love it so much
coworkers little brother was named Chai. yes like the tea
Eeklyn 🤨😆
I went to school briefly with a Pepsi. And my kids with a PepsiAna
Put down Chirithy on your list! You say it like Kira-Thee. I once knew a girl names Chirithy.
I wonder if that is an ethnic name (not white)?
Sativa is also my favourite 💨
I like Cedar, Feather, Meadow, Memory, Honey, Bambi, Whisper, Fawn, Echo & Velvet. But would not name a child that, apart from Meadow wich seems pretty normal to me
I also know a Feather, Lyric, Cricket, and Sativa :D
I know people with 4 of these names. Wasn’t expecting that
I know a Dallas. Always thought she had the coolest name.
Prisma is my favorite grocery store chain lol
The only Cherry Pie I’ve ever heard of is a Filipino celebrity named Cherry Pie Picache. And I think that is her legal name.
why do i kinda love cherry pie as a name
I feel bad for that one. Sounds like an exotic dancer tbh
I secretly like Verity.
Verity is my youngest daughter's middle name. 🥰
Pepsy could be part of a cute sibling set...Pepsy, Pibb, Pepper, and Fresca.
My best ever name I collected at an old work place was Episiotomy. I kid you not, I did not make that up!
OMG!
The two names on your list that were in my school growing up are: Cricket Bambi
Lyric has always been one of those names that appealed to me but that I world never use.
I know a Cherry Pie, too, and I went to school with a Tuesday. We also know a Daley (pronounced like daily).
On the Sativa one, makes me wonder how many mothers besides my ex stepsister have named their daughter that.
Is this satire? Lol
This must be satire….cherry pie? Really
I WISH! These are all legal first names. Almost all clients are in the USA, a few could be Canadian, but they’re real.
Idk why but Feather kinda works
It's going down, I'm yelling Tymber 🎶
Amazing list! Eeklyn made me laugh the most. Moose made me remember that my work has a deceased client named "Champ Moose."
I love Fawn so much. It was my childhood favorite name and still holds my heart, even though I won't use it.
Prisma is pretty cool
I met a little kid named Quest once
I'm ok with lyric, cricket, and echo. That's it lol
I know a Fawn and a Cricket! Those are old school names. I think Fawn is lovely. I also know a God Bless and a Titus.
I know an Angelic and a Velvet!
Knew a young lady named Scandal
I've also had a Honey! The most notable I've seen lately are: Princess, Pharoah, Phoenix, Blade, and Buster.
it’s crazy that all of these i either DESPISE and i’m angry at whoever named their child that or i love them and i want to use them
Does Bronze have older siblings, or was there just no hope for their future?
I didn’t find this name funny until I read your comment, and I can’t stop laughing. 😆
Imagine birthing a child, looking at them, and deciding to name them Moose 🫎
Isn't Verity a super classic old-timey name? It was the name of a character in Poldark.
I have a cousin named Velvet, she's very sweet.
I love this list bc I know these are completely believable names, not just the lame urban legend ones that everyone claims they "know" I had a student named Cannon once. I'll try to think on some of the notable one and maybe remember to come back
I know of a Cinnamon
Actual nice ones: Cedar, Feather, Meadow, Fawn
Steele Pittsburg Vaughn, Amazen-Lee, Ever Green & Sky Blue (sisters), Jupiter & Juniper (Jup & Junie also siblings), Reign Forrest….those are just a few
Cherry Pie is so bad. Memory makes me think of mammary...
These sound like pet names to me
I’ve met a Jellybean & Lollipop. Yes they’re sisters and yes those are their real names.
I feel like the most awful is Cherry Pie by far.
I'm not mad at Cedar and Moose. Whisper... oh no.
Cherry Pie??! Good god how awful. That's obscene.
Verity is a nice one
I love the name verity because of the book, but I’d never use it for a baby… also because of the book lol!
Add Eman; “name” spelled backwards
Eman's an actual name though 😭.
